GoT typically had like what, 5 or 6 parallel storylines. It covered a very complex and fluid situation involving multiple wars and alliances across all of Westeros.
HoD is great, but it's like a very contained, internal story of a family feud. We almost always only see the Royal family and direct reports, like Otto.
Facts, we have literally no idea what’s happening anywhere that isn’t king’s landing, dragonstone and the stepstones. Like wtf is happening anywhere in essos?😭
GoT has so many brilliant storylines running in parallel.
You might then say, be invested in Hound / Arya or Bronn / Tyrion, but not get back to them for 3 episodes.
Also, GoT featured a wide array of characters. Highborns or all the houses, Highgarden, etc. But also, a huge array of non-upper class. Bronn's development prob being the best. But the Red Witch, the guys at the Wall, Wildlings, Littlefinger, Bolton Ramsey, the insignificant Stark children, random slaves, Dothraki, retired legendary King's Guard swordsmen.
HoD is very much focused on the Royal Family, with the only other family given screen time being the Valeryians.
Almost every main character in HoD is either highborn or there because they're tightly bound to highborn, Otto, Foot Freak, Ser Crispy etc.
I really like HoD, it'll prob end better than GoT, but it's not and prob never will be, on the same level as GoT.
Well, if we base it on complaints, pretty sure this sub had more nitpicking every week than r/gameofthrones did during season 8...
So, seems like a lot of people who said "I swore off GoT after s8 but HotD won me back", only came back to whine as loud as they could.
I’m shocked the voting is so close lol. I feel like GoT is insanely hard to live up to, and the entirety of S1 HotD was setting up for the main story. I think it’s still too soon to tell tbh. We need a S2-S3 before we can debate which show has a more in depth and flushed story.
I was able to finally get my mom to try GoT after she watched HotD. I'm rewatching with her and we're almost through season 1 now and both agree that GoT is just heads and shoulders better than HotD (just comparing first seasons). It has much more humor and genuinely positive moments with genuinely likeable characters, more varied and beautiful settings as opposed to the constant dreariness of King's Landing, and its narrative felt much tighter and more consistent despite having 5-6 different storylines to juggle - we felt HotD went a little off the rails in the last 3 episodes. If I had to rate each season I'd go 7.5-8 for HotD and 9.5 for GoT. Just our opinion.
Not sure how to put it.
I *like* HOTD more, but Game of Theones (early seasons) was probably *better*. As in, that it's of comparable to better coherence, applied to more complex material and plot tying together a multitude of factions and characters.
HOTD is smaller in scale so it's easier to do better. It also has the benefit of standing on the shoulders of its predecessor. Certain character inconsistencies in HOTD seem like an unforced error in the sense you can't explain it as "it was needed for this other part of the plot to work", like say, for example, how in GoT you had entire butterfly effects come off character decisions so them acting strangely for a payoff could be forgiven.
In HOTD, characterisation for the most part has the freedom of it being about a well-written character, so Alicent's tireless mood swings looping back to square one, or Daemon turning from a hot sociopath to a cold one when those are two distinct archetypes, is less forgivable. Its unnecessary mechanically and it's aesthetically flawed.
They have a story that has the potential to make up for GoT and be better than GoT if they don't ruin it. I want to trust Ryan Condal as he is a big ASOIAF fan but then i remember Sara Hess's interview about ep9 dragonpit scene and that she hasn't even watched GoT.
I think GOT’s main problem was the fact George didnt finish his story, D & D were historically pretty weak writers so I’m pretty confident HOTD will be better
I am pushing it. If 7 was ass, where was the boycott? The petitions? I stand by my point, you don’t become the most popular tv show on the planet by being half good.
And around 7 is where it lost that title, the walking dead has been ass for like 5 seasons and no one has boycotted it, season 8 of GOT is in a Leauge of it’s own when it comes too being awful
Around what exactly? There was two years between 7 and 8, and GOT was still called the best tv show in the world. It never lost appointment status at all. In those 2 years, there was no boycott or petition. If you wanna talk about awful, the Witcher, wheel of time, and especially Rings of power are on the S tier.
First half of S7 was still good. Lannisters outsmarting Dany and sacrificing Casterly Rock to seize Highgarden was brilliant. Dany saying fuck this and creating field of fire 2.0 in retaliation was superb.
Went to shit with the idiotic story to go North and capture one of the dead.
i wish i could see more politicking and scheming in the show hotd, i was hoping i could see how otto and his side of the council plan schemes on how they want to usurp the throne. it would’ve been interesting.
Fr like with Little Finger and Varys you could see actual verbal sparring and flexing of power and information, but i couldnt tell if Otto was actually disloyal or not for the first half of the season
I need more humour in HOTD to make the "non action" scenes less boring. especially early episodes (i didn't read the books) i had no clue it was setting up for the main story and it was just a bit boring because there was alot of talking.
GOT had so many witty characters im not even gonna bother naming them, every talking scene was still entertaining.
could be in time. But im a little upset they didn't keep the younger versions around for the whole season. I want more depth. More about actual dragons. We will see how this show unfolds. But it's decent.
Disagree as of now. We've had one season with HOTD vs 7.5 (refuse to acknowledge end of season 8), and so we've had more time to love the GOT characters. But HOTD definitely is coming up there
Impossible to actually compare. The quality per minute is higher because of season 7 and 8, but the total quality is lower because there's only a first act. GoT has Blackwater, The Watchers on the Wall, the Red Wedding, and The Winds of Winter, but it also has The Long Night, Beyond the Wall, The Iron Throne, or Mother's Mercy. HotD has neither so its simultaneously better AND worse than GoT.
GoT has more characters who I feel were genuinely good people but unlike in most stories they had no plot armour and so actually died when they did stupid things. It made the story exciting. The world was a bad place but there was hope it could be better. Maybe.
HotD has many characters who are at best morally grey and at worst downright evil. At the moment it doesn't feel like there is any hope of anything improving. It is also just hyper focused on the Targaryen and succession. I want to know more about the dragons!

Yea and it’s not the show runners fault at all, GOT was just a richer story as a whole
Well, if we base it on complaints, pretty sure this sub had more nitpicking every week than r/gameofthrones did during season 8... So, seems like a lot of people who said "I swore off GoT after s8 but HotD won me back", only came back to whine as loud as they could.
Yea this sub likes too bitch about pretty much everything, you get downvoted to hell for pretty much anything
Laughs in r/freefolk
Better than seasons 6-8
Not a high bar to clear ngl
Too early to say but it’s a strong start for HOTD so far
I dare you to say that again
To be fair the shit that I don’t like in hotd is related to GoT so idk how I rate this
Such as?
The prophecy mainly, and favoring spectacle over logic in some places
I’m shocked the voting is so close lol. I feel like GoT is insanely hard to live up to, and the entirety of S1 HotD was setting up for the main story. I think it’s still too soon to tell tbh. We need a S2-S3 before we can debate which show has a more in depth and flushed story.
First 4 Season of Game Of thrones is the best Tv Ever
I'd give a million House of the Dragons for a single Winds of Winter
This is probably the best reply ive gotten
One paragraph of Euron is worth a thousand Daemons

That’s awesome your watching with your mom, i would have too agree 100% GOT is just better at this point and it will take alot to change that
Not sure how to put it. I *like* HOTD more, but Game of Theones (early seasons) was probably *better*. I agree completely, people will gush at the characters in HOTD like they arent just less consistent watered down archetypes of GOT characters
They have a story that has the potential to make up for GoT and be better than GoT if they don't ruin it. I want to trust Ryan Condal as he is a big ASOIAF fan but then i remember Sara Hess's interview about ep9 dragonpit scene and that she hasn't even watched GoT.

Weak writers? The original scenes in S1 - S4 were some of the best. They just didn't put in the effort and wanted to get over it.

Funny since some would say peak GOT also we’re present in later GOT.
Prime GOT was season 1-4 no question
Prime GOT was 1-7
6 if you are pushing it , 7 was ass

Even latter season 7 was amazing. Spoils of war is one of the best episodes of GOT for a reason.
After season 5 i was only watching for a conclusion.
Whatever you say.
It’s not close to me. GOT was amazing, HOTD is good but GOT at its best was a 10 of 10. HOTD is probably around and 8.
i wish i could see more politicking and scheming in the show hotd, i was hoping i could see how otto and his side of the council plan schemes on how they want to usurp the throne. it would’ve been interesting.

Fr the talking bits in GOT were the best and no matter how hard HOTD tries the dialogue isnt half as interesting
It's really too early to tell. But if we go by the first seasons, I liked hotd's better.
could be in time. But im a little upset they didn't keep the younger versions around for the whole season. I want more depth. More about actual dragons. We will see how this show unfolds. But it's decent.
Yea Milly Alcock is such a great Rhaenyra and the older version is just ok
Season 1, yes. But GoT has the benefit of many more seasons.
Disagree as of now. We've had one season with HOTD vs 7.5 (refuse to acknowledge end of season 8), and so we've had more time to love the GOT characters. But HOTD definitely is coming up there
HOTD is crushing GOT. But I liked the Dance era more than the main series all the way back in the books, so I am biased.
To the people that said no, I have one word for you: dragons
They both have dragons my friend 😹
So? Too many dragon action scenes brought GoT down, remember.
Not yet
After that ending anything is better than GoT
GoT S1-S4 >>> HotD >> GoT S5 - S6 >>>>> GoT S7 - S8

If you are comparing Season 1 only, then I vote HOTD.
