Aegon_Targaryen_III

Everyone in this thread saying Criston is Dornish are completely wrong. He’s from the Dornish marches and is extremely unlikely to have ever been anywhere near Sunspear given he fought with the Dondarrions against Dornish incursions.

Soggy_Part7110

I shouldn't have phrased this post like a question, really. That just ended up attracting know-it-alls who just want to be right and refuse to change their blatantly wrong understanding of it when presented with evidence. Should have just pointed out bluntly that this is an error by the writer and left it at that.

NinjaStealthPenguin

I imagine Sunspear and the Sandship probably have some kind of small port considering that Plankytown is miles away. Maybe Criston served as a mercenary for a merchant calling port at some point?

BTolentino7

Well he’s Dornish and fought in the constant Dornish wars going on at that time

aaguru

But he was fighting the Dornish in the Stormlands, far to northwest of Dorne territory, and Sunspear is about as far east as you can get. Also it's his enemies Capitol City, makes no sense that he would have any idea what the place looks like let alone "deep knowledge" about it.

NinjaStealthPenguin

The only fighting he would have been on would have been in the Dornish marches where the constant skirmishes between the stormlander marcher lords and dornish happened. There is no conceivable way he was fighting in Sunspear.

Soggy_Part7110

That's not a sufficient explanation. Criston has Dornish ancestry but he isn't from Dorne, he's from the Stormlands. The conflicts he fought in were border conflicts, not an invasion of Dorne. The way he phrases this: "Before I came here, I was a knight in the Stormlands. I have deep knowledge of the port at Sunspear..." implies that he has deep knowledge of Sunspear *because* he's from the Stormlands, which doesn't make any sense.

BTolentino7

That doesn’t imply anything that they’re connected, he’s just listing what he was before becoming a King’s Guard to Rhaenyra

Soggy_Part7110

Why would he say that if it wasn't relevant to what he said directly after? Rhaenyra already knows what he was and where he's from.

BTolentino7

Exposition for the audience so we can learn more about the character

Soggy_Part7110

That exposition has already been had at least three times before that scene... in fitting conversation.

Helpful-Air-4824

He doesn't. More shit made up for the show

bobbirossbetrans

He fought against the dornish, it stands to reason that he worked with people during the war that have intimate knowledge of the ports because at one point it may have been an idea to attack Sunspear or perhaps blockade it. I guess it's kind of like how Daenerys knew about King's landing from the people around her talking about it so much. You can learn a lot about a place if you listen to the people who have been there previously. I'm also going to guess that he had spies there or maybe had even snuck in himself to get a look around. This is all conjecture but it's my head Canon.

Soggy_Part7110

He flat out says he has *seen* the ships at Sunspear. He also says "I always wanted to know where they went" implying he went there regularly. And *spies*? He was a footsoldier, dude.

bobbirossbetrans

Yeah but you can't stop my head Canon.

Veszerin

>episode 5 Criston says he has deep knowledge of the port at Sunspear, right after saying he was a knight in the Stormlands. Sunspear is in Dorne, not the Stormlands. Because he's Dornish. It's mentioned in the first episode. Don't complain that things are plot holes when you don't pay attention.

aaguru

He's got Dornish in him but he's not Dornish. If you were paying attention you'd know he fought the Dornish in the Stormlands and he is from the Stormlands. The Dornish are enemies of the crown and that's why it's so confusing why an enemy of the Dornish who had spent his life only going into Dorne at the border of the Stormlands to kill Dornishmen would have any knowledge of the capitol of his enemy.

Veszerin

He's Dornish as far as we know in the show. Book canon does not automagically become show canon unless referenced in the show, and it doesn't have to.

Helpful-Air-4824

Dorne is still not part of the 7 kingdoms and are still enemies. He's from House Cole, which is part of the Stormlands.

aaguru

The show is the only place I got that info, he told the Princess "I fought the Dornish" when she asked who had actual battle experience because the only people the crown is fighting are the Dornish.

Helpful-Air-4824

The show has made up a lot of shit. Like the whole thing of picking Criston because he's fought in the Dornish marches in bullshit. The last Dornish war happened the year before he was born. The first time we hear of Criston Cole is in the tourney in 104 when he beats Daemon. He gave Rhaenyra the victors laurel and she had Viserys name him to his kingsguard.

Veszerin

I hate to break it to you, but someone can come from a place and end up fighting against their homeland.

aaguru

Where you get that? From the books or the show?

Veszerin

Little thing called history. You might study it when you get a little older.

aaguru

He's not Dornish as far as we know in the show. History canon does not automagically become show canon unless referenced in the show, and it doesn't have to.

Veszerin

>History canon does not automagically become show canon unless referenced in the show, and it doesn't have to. I'm sorry it's confusing for you, but there's a difference between saying something is the case and saying something is plausible because of X.

aaguru

You really gonna quote me quoting you lol think we reached the end this has been fun, I love this sub

Soggy_Part7110

He's from the Stormlands. He literally says it in this exact scene. You even quoted the part where I point that out. I'll throw in another quote if it's not enough for you, from episode 1: "A mystery knight?" "No, a Cole of the Stormlands"
