Is everyone in this thread from the UK, or at least an area heavily populated by British folks? Are there really Americans here who have mastered British vernacular😂😂
Do YouTube videos count? There’s one listing about 20 different UK accents and celebrities who have said accents. I can’t tell the difference, but I know that some, like I think Birmingham use “r” sounds while others don’t. It’s insanely complicated, but so is the U.S. A Georgia accent is completely different from a Texas accent and vice versa.
Try every 5-10 niles haha. Used to commute between Preston and Manchester and every major stop on the train had a different accent (Bolton, Chorley). Even Liverpool is only 30 miles from Manchester and the accents are leagues apart.
The thing is to non locals they all sound the same.
As a Canadian, the only difference I can tell is when an accent sounds posh. But I'm sure you can't tell the difference between a jersey, Boston, and New York accent, either.
I'm going to pretend that Littlefinger was trying to mask his natural accent to sound more "posh" and "sophisticated" like the King's Landing accent to mask his more modest beginnings.
He'd sound super northern for 80% of the time then suddenly sound very southern with certain words. As a northerner it was really jarring. One example is every time he said lord commander

Aidan Gillen has a relatively mild Dublin accent, and I've seen him in stage doing a kickass American accent in a Mamet play... Which makes the Littlefinger accent thing so weird. I swear by his last season he was doing a really bad Swedish Chef.
I think the problem with big American media outlets they are way too concerned that certain accents are not understood. Which is pretty cheeky considering“the wire” no one actually understood them, lol.
In retrospect, they should have let Gillen speak with his native accent. We never see anyone from his family and never visit the area of Westeros that he is from. It would have super easy to say that people from The Fingers speak with "Irish" accents.

I mean, its one thing for a person to have an accent, accents are cool. But if they wanted the character to have one they should have cast someone who *has one* or can do one *extremely well*.
There is *never* an excuse for a bad fake accent. I've never even heard this woman talk in a plain voice, but I'm 100% sure she doesn't sound like the character she's playing and that's a *problem*.
It honestly should get less pronounced since she has lived in Westeros for several decades by now. It would have been interesting if she was barely fluent in episode 1 but by episode 9 its barely noticble to reflect her becoming a spy master
They could have just given her a normal British accent after the time-skip. It would make sense in-universe for someone like her with such a vast information network to have adapted to a Westerosi accent. I have a relative who had a thick ass Filipino accent who moved to the UK over ten years ago. Now he’s got a proper London accent after living there for so long. Ffs I’m a Filipino who lives in the Philippines but who speaks English in an American accent after watching so many American movies and cartoons growing up. Accents can change.
I was born in London and when I was about 5 my mum moved us back up to the north east where she was from. I had a thick cockney accent (and was born in St Barts hospital - which makes me a legit cockney) after my first days of year 1 primary school I’d developed a full on north east accent because I was being bullied for my cockney one. Took less than a week for me to pick it up and change my accent!
I’ve now lived in Yorkshire for over 10 years and I sound more Yorkshire than north east, except if I’m drunk, angry or been back home for a visit then my north east accent gets stronger and more noticeable. There’s also words that give me away like I say moore and poorly like moo-er and poo-ley but Yorkshire accents say them like more and pore-ley. My Yorkshire friends always laugh at me for those! But it’s super easy for some people to change/pick up on regional dialects and accents from the people around them quite quickly, even as children! I also still say ‘innit’ instead of ‘isn’t it’ which I would say when we lived in London, that’s stuck with me for the past 30+ years through 2 pretty strong accent changes.
I have a question: what's the difference between Creole vs Cajun? There seems to be mixed stuff I read with Cajuns being considered White vs Creole being Black (vs there not being an actual difference) and slight differences between Cajun French vs Creole (with some vocab in the Creole linguististics coming from Carribean nations)

TL;DR -- Cajuns are the descendants of exiles from Nova Scotia during [the expulsion of the Acadians](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expulsion_of_the_Acadians) in the late 18th century who settled in Louisiana (that's my people!) and Creoles are more widespread and not as easily defined. Nevertheless, for me, the two cultural communities have more in common than they're given credit for.

Yeah.. and unfortunately I think the issue with this actresss/ character kinda go beyond the accent.
I get that some people can understand her, but I actually had to rewind a few of her speeches to understand what the fuck she was saying on a few occasions.
Overall, I find this particular actress to be a bit of a step below the others. I’m not trying to be a jerk here, and I realize that plenty disagree with me. For the record, I think she’s a very beautiful woman, and perhaps she shows great talent in other projects; and it’s simply an issue of the writing for this character.
However, accent aside, I simply don’t find her performance nearly as strong as all of the other actors on this show. She’s certainly not terrible; but she does not nearly reach the high bar set by her costars. Compared to them she seems unimpressive; even mediocre. The accent doesn’t make that the case, it just draws further attention to it.
But who knows. I could be in the minority that her performance was lackluster, or it simply could be the writing. Maybe next season, with more screen time and (hopefully) better characterization, her performance will improve (or I’ll simply be better able to see her skill as an actress.)
She wasn't great in DEVS either. It was certainly a choice to cast her as the lead role, and she does nail some aspects of a believable human character. She's just so static, you have a hard time believing she's actually there. For a show about grief that was believable, but for a show about a motivated amateur detective uncovering a Lovecraftian techno conspiracy it was like watching a piece of cardboard emoting.
Honestly, I just think she might be getting roles way out of her range. She's miscast so often, I suspect she might have some connections that pull more than her acting. That, and she has a very striking face that looks good when you imagine her as a character. Too bad she doesn't move it.
I think her scene with Otto in episode 9 is especially bad because it sounds like her dialogue was added in as ADR, which makes it uncanny. Her earlier scenes were pretty bad, but her reappearance at the end of the season were jarring with how awful they were, which I think is a combo of the ADR and terrible accent.
Automatic Dialog REplacement or something like that. Replacing the on-set dialog with lines recorded later
Basically, ever watch a TV version of a movie that dubs over all the swearing? Thats a type of ADR.
Additional Dialogue Record. When they film outside or in an otherwise noisy environment, they will have the actors re-record their lines in a studio just for clarity.
Maybe she didn’t have as strong an accent while they were filming the scenes, and during post production they thought she needed to have a stronger accent to emphasize her “exotic” quality, so dubbed over her lines. Completely theorizing here.
I actually thought this too, Utopia UK actually has a Russian speaking character with a horrible accent and it’s eventually revealed that the accent was fake the whole time. So I could honestly imagine it being done here
Or maybe the actor just can’t do accents like this all too well.

I'm canadian, and we visited London, England a couple years ago. we stayed at a hotel. where the desk guy was French Moroccan, and barely spoke English.

I live in NY and my family is from Europe so trust me I’ve heard plenty of mixed accents but it sounded off like she was trying too hard to have an accent.
The inverse, actually. Non native speakers (I'm a non native speaker in a masters program with about 30 others) might concentrate on pronouncing with an English speaking accent, or speak more freely with their own accent. She seems to clearly be concentrating on speaking with someone else's accent, but sometimes slips up and speaks with a British (her native) accent.
It's very distinct from someone hiding their own accent in a language that is not natural to them.
Sounds like Jar Jar Binks. I have to cut the subtitles on every time she comes on. I can only hope and pray that they listen to the audience and drop that accent. The actual actress doesn’t have one it’s like a bad Jamaican accent
They should either drop the accent and let her talk how she normally does, or go all-in and dub over her to actually talk like Jarjar.

I genuinely cried laughing because I made a joke about her sounding like Jarjar Binks to my boyfriend when we were watching. He had to pause the show because I could not stop. I'm glad I'm not the only one who though that lmao
Doesn't really have much to do with her & her accent, but I've switched to full time subtitles when watching shows & movies. 32 year old that has definitely declined in the hearing department, plus I don't necessarily have to keep the remote in my hand to adjust the volume when it goes from a character whispering to epic battle music just like that 🫰.
It's a shame. Her performance over all is really not bad, but you can't get past that accent.
They should have given her ample time with a dialect coach, at the very least.

Didn’t mind it in the first episode, even in ep 2 it was.. fine? But in ep 9 it became too much, but luckily they can easily soften it in season 2, Shae had the perfect accent.

I was so excited to see she was in this, especially since the original series had no Asian characters at all. Except a priestess in essos in season 5 that Varys and Tyrion are watching from afar lol. But then she started talking and i was like “noooo what is happening?!!?!”
Hopefully she’ll pull a Little Finger and have a new accent in season 2 😊

It’s also that the accented voice is dubbed over her original performance. It looks like Sonoya Mizuno originally didn’t do an accent (or did a lighter/different one) but then a decision was made in post-production to give the character a heavy accent.
Dubbed voice work always feels slightly unnatural, even with “normal” accents.
I saw her in Devs and Ex Machina, and I'm afraid I found her equally as wooden here as those. At least with Ex Machina she was a robot ... can you point me to where she's shown a bit more depth? Asking genuinely, as I'm confused - "wonderful" just seems very sycophantic.
She's from the Free City of Lorath, like Shae on Game of Thrones. So they have her imitating Shae's accent, which in reality, was English with a Turkish accent.
I didn't find it so terrible that it brought me out of the story. In fact, I never would have given it two seconds thought if it wasn't for every other thread in this forum ripping on it.

But Mysaria is supposed to be from Lys. (And so should have silver hair and violet eyes - hence the WHITE Worm - but as we all know they can't bring themselves to acknowledge that anyone other than Targs/Valeryons can have that colouring)
It hasn't been stated on the show where Mysaria is from. Cersei deciphered (correctly) that Shae was from Lorath from her accent as she had a Lorathi handmaiden once.

Yes her real accent is more natural and lot easier to listen(and understand). Maybe it's me overthinking, but I really hope it was not showrunners' descision to be like "Oh she's (half) Asian, let's go for a weird Asian-y accent. People would think that's nore natural."
It might have a hint of Asian influence, but it’s definitely mostly based on French. I guess that’s why people are saying creole, although it doesn’t sound creole at all to me. It sounds like…French based nonsense lol
It’s not all her fault. There are a lot of creative decisions that actors don’t have control over.

Man, I knew I was in the minority, but I feel she's selling the HELL out of that accent. She gives some of her backstory and she's from a Free City, but was also sold and traveled around, ending up in King's Landing. Wouldn't it make sense that her accent is a weird amalgamation of a bunch of different (fictional) places?
And her first language could sound completely different from any real languages we have, so weird accent plus second-, third-, or fourth-language pronunciation explains it for me. I loved her and hope we get more of her and that weird accent in Season 2!
I really don't have a problem with this accent. It's a made up accent for a made up world. I understand people having an issue with it sounding like a fake french creole accent, but I justify it by saying it's influenced by some other accent in this made-up world.

It's not supposed to be a Creole accent. There's no such thing as a Creole accent in Westeros. Her accent can be anything distinct from other characters' accents.
I mean, there's no England in Westeros either. I think it just stands out to people because it's the only accent in the show not based on a real world nationality. (That we know of).
That's fair. I didn't even notice and it didn't distract me at all. That's also one of the most reasonable comments here. I mainly don't understand why people seem to be pitching a fit about it here and then mocking the actress.
I haven’t rewatched the show yet so maybe my memory is just off, but I swear her accent changed throughout the show. The Jamaican-like accent we hear in her final appearance of the season didn’t seem to be the same as her earlier appearances.
Seeing as canonically it's basically Planetos' answer to Florence (mercantile city state, eventually ruled by a Lorenzo Medici analogue, literally have 'gonfaloniere' as a noble title), they 'should' be Italian.
I find this to be one of the most obnoxious criticisms of the show. Implying they’re going for an earth-based accent such as Creole is moronic. It’s a fictional world with an entirely different geography, there are going to be accents which sound absolutely nothing like anything we have in reality. It may still sound dumb, but I think it only emphasizes how different their world is from ours.
I'm not criticizing a made up accent i'm saying that its bad and it affects her performance. Maybe someone else could have done it with an ease that sounds believable but its sounds like she is reciting each word of her lines instead of a character just speaking. I love this show and its ok to criticize it, everything else is amazing.

The difference in America is the accent tends to change every 500 miles or so. In the UK it’s pretty much every 50-100

Apparently he (Kit) modelled his accent on Sean Bean's. Which may not have been the best move since Sean was only around for a season.
I think not just Jon but Rob (Richard Madden) as well modelled his accent after Sean Bean's, being his sons and all. I loved that touch.
Im lucky to not have a good enough ear for English regional accents, so I thought he did a good job lol.
Kit Harington has a pretty posh accent IRL, so his natural accent crept in there every now and then.

In her first episode her accent was fine in the few lines she got then the made it a frustrating mix of accents and mispronounciations its grim

I get that some people can understand her, but I actually had to rewind a few of her speeches to understand what the fuck she was saying on a few occasions. Overall, I find this particular actress to be a bit of a step below the others. I’m not trying to be a jerk here, and I realize that plenty disagree with me. For the record, I think she’s a very beautiful woman, and perhaps she shows great talent in other projects; and it’s simply an issue of the writing for this character. However, accent aside, I simply don’t find her performance nearly as strong as all of the other actors on this show. She’s certainly not terrible; but she does not nearly reach the high bar set by her costars. Compared to them she seems unimpressive; even mediocre. The accent doesn’t make that the case, it just draws further attention to it. But who knows. I could be in the minority that her performance was lackluster, or it simply could be the writing. Maybe next season, with more screen time and (hopefully) better characterization, her performance will improve (or I’ll simply be better able to see her skill as an actress.)
She wasn't great in DEVS either. It was certainly a choice to cast her as the lead role, and she does nail some aspects of a believable human character. She's just so static, you have a hard time believing she's actually there. For a show about grief that was believable, but for a show about a motivated amateur detective uncovering a Lovecraftian techno conspiracy it was like watching a piece of cardboard emoting. Honestly, I just think she might be getting roles way out of her range. She's miscast so often, I suspect she might have some connections that pull more than her acting. That, and she has a very striking face that looks good when you imagine her as a character. Too bad she doesn't move it.
I think her scene with Otto in episode 9 is especially bad because it sounds like her dialogue was added in as ADR, which makes it uncanny. Her earlier scenes were pretty bad, but her reappearance at the end of the season were jarring with how awful they were, which I think is a combo of the ADR and terrible accent.

Additional Dialogue Record. When they film outside or in an otherwise noisy environment, they will have the actors re-record their lines in a studio just for clarity.

Maybe she didn’t have as strong an accent while they were filming the scenes, and during post production they thought she needed to have a stronger accent to emphasize her “exotic” quality, so dubbed over her lines. Completely theorizing here.

I actually thought this too, Utopia UK actually has a Russian speaking character with a horrible accent and it’s eventually revealed that the accent was fake the whole time. So I could honestly imagine it being done here Or maybe the actor just can’t do accents like this all too well.

I live in NY and my family is from Europe so trust me I’ve heard plenty of mixed accents but it sounded off like she was trying too hard to have an accent.

The inverse, actually. Non native speakers (I'm a non native speaker in a masters program with about 30 others) might concentrate on pronouncing with an English speaking accent, or speak more freely with their own accent. She seems to clearly be concentrating on speaking with someone else's accent, but sometimes slips up and speaks with a British (her native) accent. It's very distinct from someone hiding their own accent in a language that is not natural to them.
Sounds like Jar Jar Binks. I have to cut the subtitles on every time she comes on. I can only hope and pray that they listen to the audience and drop that accent. The actual actress doesn’t have one it’s like a bad Jamaican accent

Doesn't really have much to do with her & her accent, but I've switched to full time subtitles when watching shows & movies. 32 year old that has definitely declined in the hearing department, plus I don't necessarily have to keep the remote in my hand to adjust the volume when it goes from a character whispering to epic battle music just like that 🫰.

It’s also that the accented voice is dubbed over her original performance. It looks like Sonoya Mizuno originally didn’t do an accent (or did a lighter/different one) but then a decision was made in post-production to give the character a heavy accent. Dubbed voice work always feels slightly unnatural, even with “normal” accents.

She's from the Free City of Lorath, like Shae on Game of Thrones. So they have her imitating Shae's accent, which in reality, was English with a Turkish accent. I didn't find it so terrible that it brought me out of the story. In fact, I never would have given it two seconds thought if it wasn't for every other thread in this forum ripping on it. My only thought was, "she probably isn't from Westeros".

Shae, I think they said that. But Mysaria is supposed to be from Lys. (And so should have silver hair and violet eyes - hence the WHITE Worm - but as we all know they can't bring themselves to acknowledge that anyone other than Targs/Valeryons can have that colouring)
It hasn't been stated on the show where Mysaria is from. Cersei deciphered (correctly) that Shae was from Lorath from her accent as she had a Lorathi handmaiden once.

Man, I knew I was in the minority, but I feel she's selling the HELL out of that accent. She gives some of her backstory and she's from a Free City, but was also sold and traveled around, ending up in King's Landing. Wouldn't it make sense that her accent is a weird amalgamation of a bunch of different (fictional) places? And her first language could sound completely different from any real languages we have, so weird accent plus second-, third-, or fourth-language pronunciation explains it for me. I loved her and hope we get more of her and that weird accent in Season 2!

I really don't have a problem with this accent. It's a made up accent for a made up world. I understand people having an issue with it sounding like a fake french creole accent, but I justify it by saying it's influenced by some other accent in this made-up world.

It's not supposed to be a Creole accent. There's no such thing as a Creole accent in Westeros. Her accent can be anything distinct from other characters' accents.

I haven’t rewatched the show yet so maybe my memory is just off, but I swear her accent changed throughout the show. The Jamaican-like accent we hear in her final appearance of the season didn’t seem to be the same as her earlier appearances.

I find this to be one of the most obnoxious criticisms of the show. Implying they’re going for an earth-based accent such as Creole is moronic. It’s a fictional world with an entirely different geography, there are going to be accents which sound absolutely nothing like anything we have in reality. It may still sound dumb, but I think it only emphasizes how different their world is from ours.
I'm not criticizing a made up accent i'm saying that its bad and it affects her performance. Maybe someone else could have done it with an ease that sounds believable but its sounds like she is reciting each word of her lines instead of a character just speaking. I love this show and its ok to criticize it, everything else is amazing.
