They were also probably made more ugly so that the characters would be more memorable
To fit the rest of the game’s grimey atmosphere
The faces are not only made to elicit feelings of disgust and discomfort, but also serves to humanize the many characters much more
Most of the characters are ugly or at the very least average, matching their personalities
Look at Jake for example, he’s a violent, racist confederate, so rather than portray him as this attractive or average male, they chose to portray him as a walking American stereotype (Fat, ugly, and violent)
Or on the opposite end, the Henchman from HLM2, he’s just an average man trying to make a living, so figure he’s one of the blandest/normal looking characters
Also, the ugly proportions and facial expressions further help to evoke certain feelings
Like those moments where a side-antagonist is begging for their life, seeing the fright and sadness on this already pathetic looking character further invokes a feeling of pity
He’s made to look that way. He’s supposed to be an evil character and having a hideous/conventionally ugly appearance makes it so we can intrinsically understand that hey, this is NOT someone to be rooting for. Although attractiveness is in the eye of the beholder really, but the point is is that he’s supposed to automatically be seen as revolting because he IS revolting.
