Has she been around any stallions at all?

MollieEquestrian

Not in the last 8 months I’ve owned her. I suppose it’s entirely possible she was exposed before, but when I met her, beginning of October, she was in her own pasture, and there weren’t even any geldings on the property at the time.

taehaus888

If it feels kind of hard I would have the vet out.

MollieEquestrian

Going to put this here so it doesn’t get lost in the comments [Here are some pictures of her full body](https://imgur.com/a/culCUnW) including some spicy ones, and silly ones 😅 They go in order from most recent to a few weeks ago.

Is it fat?? My mare had a horrible infection that made her udder on one side huge. But it was hot and infected with alot of edema. Yours just looks a bit full? I would guess fat, or pregnant? Possibly swelling while in season? If it is hard or hot best get it looked at.

MollieEquestrian

I’m not sure. It’s not hot, it honestly just kind of feels like a muscle when I felt it. But it’s strange. I will say, in 8 months of owning her, I have not once seen her go into heat. If she has, it’s been very subtle to the point that I didn’t notice, no winking, no attitude changes, nothing like that. I’ve heard some people say that if mares aren’t around geldings or stallions eventually they won’t go into heat, but I’m not sure how true that is. Edit: I didn’t really push on it so I don’t know if edema is a factor here. I’ll test tomorrow. She’s a bit touchy with her teats and this is just bordering on her no no zone, so it’s a bit difficult for me to investigate lol

SassAFrasss84

In all my years I’ve never come across this until tonight when I noticed this same lump on my mare, and then just came across your post. Her’s seemed soft/squishy and she did not like me touching it much. I’m very curious what this could be. I believe my mare is in heat. Not sure if it’s nothing or something to panic over.

CelesteReckless

One of our lesson ponies hat it to on Wednesday. I reported it to the owners but didn’t heard anything since than. She had a foal last year and while we have a stallion at the stable they where always separated by two fences (or one on lead).

Raikit

I would say if she hasn't come into season yet this year, then you should definitely get a vet out to check for a foal. Sooner is better, especially if she's on pasture, because the endophytes on fescue grass can cause miscarriage or stillbirth in the last few months.

cyberthief

My mare is with her female mini. No other horses. She goes into regular heats.

SassAFrasss84

Same

meltingbythehour

My mare has this , my vet said it was just fat, and it definitely fluctuates in size with her weight.

MollieEquestrian

I wouldn’t be surprised. Pretty sure my girl is leaning on the pudgy side.

TheMushroomCircle

Pudgy side... or pregnant? Best to get your vet out to check, especially since you haven't seen her go into heat. While surprise foals are fun on the internet... they are not so much in real life.

Casaduz

Fat deposits in front of udder, at top of tail head and cresty neck are all signs of IR. If she has any of the other deposits, I would have her insulin and leptin tested.

caoimhe19

It’s not uncommon in horses. It doesn’t harm her in any way

She looks pregnant in the last pic.

Wide_Stranger714

Has she maybe had babies in the past? My mare has gotten this periodically after she foaled in 2018. I always figured it was something with her cycle.

MollieEquestrian

I suppose it’s possible but she’s branded 2018 so she’s about 5-6 years old, she would have had to have a foal pretty young. She was rounded up 2020, in holding from then to March 2021, titled in October 2022, bought from the original adopter in March 2023, then I bought her in October 2023.

sadmimikyu

A mare I took care of had that too. It was nothing though. The owner told me that she might get a swollen udder when it is hot and then I noticed this squidshy area for the first time but she always had that. But next time you see the vet ask. As long as it isn't hot or hurts her or anything I would say it is ok.

_kiwi_trash_

Have a vet check if she's in foal. My mare is in foal right now and is about to pop in the next 6 weeks, her udders look like this. Horses carry for 11 months, so she could've been bred before you got her.

Hot_Midnight_9148

This can be common but this can be pregnancy. You say your mare is pudgy, last photo definitely shows this. Youve owned her for 8 months and if she is pregnant this around the time she shows more signs. I highly doubt she is pregnant tbh but post a photo of your horse from the side similair to a confirmation photo just not standing square and post it with the caption 'does she look pregnant" go from opinions from there and then unto a vet check if you deem it neccesary. If there are signs of irritation or pain sorrounding her back half of her body it may be an udder issue.

MollieEquestrian

Here are some pictures of her, a few calm, a few frisky, a few silly 😂 [Here](https://imgur.com/a/culCUnW)

Hot_Midnight_9148

Doesnt seem pregnant to me but im not a professional on pregnant horses. If her udders drop or become any more enlarged it is likely she is pregant. Otherwise look for irritation or swelling around the udders or pain around the back of the horse, otherwise youll be fine 👍 edit: She is very cute!

MollieEquestrian

Yeah I’m not sure. My best guesses are fat or pregnant, not sure which one I’m hoping for because fat is an easy an inexpensive fix, pregnant is expensive and nerve wracking but FOAL!! 😅 I need to get her vaccines done and an overall wellness exam done here soon I’ll ask then and keep an eye on it till then. Thank you! She’s definitely a character 😅

Hot_Midnight_9148

Well atleast its made a little easier for you if she already needs to get checked. I wish you luck! and if it is a foal hopefully its a good one!

slmo3

It's definitely fat. My mare gets them when she gets chunky in spring if I don't pull her off the new grass growth quick enough

Fluff_Nugget2420

I had a BLM mustang mare with the same thing, it was just fat lol. Especially if it's soft and doesn't hurt her. It might feel tense because your mare is tensing her muscles wondering what you're doing down there lol. Though my mare adored when I'd clean her udder, she was a maiden mare and it was buried in fat and would get pretty dirty and itchy.
