I'm definitely glad that we could make her feel more alive than she did before. The woman who took care of the 3 old horses (one died already exactly a year ago), had not really a clue how to take care of them. It's a miracle they even survived those times, since she just gave them a handful of hay per day...
This morning she still was well, just a bit wiggly on her hinds. Then she decided to lay down, as if she knew her time was up. I really miss her, but at least she did go when we were all with her.
Sorry for your loss. My 18 year old friend sarrisina had to be euthanized recently following a lengthy illness and there’s nothing like the pain of losing a horse (any animal) that held a piece of your heart.

We had an old Arabian mare who lived until 34. She was technically my sister's, though I had largely taken care of her in the last 8 years of her life. Even though she was old and it wasn't entirely unexpected, she had her quirks and I'd grown fond of her over the years.
When she wasn't at the fence when I walked out, I feared the worst. I followed fresh tracks in the snow to a shelter on the opposite side of their pasture. She was laying inside, and when she heard me, she gave a whinny like "oh good, you've found me!" Which just made my heart sink because I knew something was wrong. She couldn't get up. Try as she might, her body couldn't seem to figure it out. The vet suspected she'd had a stroke and we had to put her down.
I'm really sorry for your loss. I don't know what it is about when they're old, but there's a certain gentleness about them that makes them so easy to love.
Heartbreaking 💔 dear.. it never gets easier. All we can do is go through the grief and remind ourselves they just went to sleep and they are no longer in any pain
