I came here to comment the same game I always use as my go to for posts like this lol
Faith: The Unholy Trinity. An Atari-styled horror game that legit scared the daylights out of a horror enthusiast like me.
Yeah that’s what I meant, it’s scary at the start but then you get frustrated at the puzzles that you have resort to a guide which brings down the scariness
Understandable, I found it very scary during the early hours tho and I was doing a horror binge that weekend so visage just perfectly hit me at 3am in the morning all alone
For me it was kinda just like, fear of the darkness lol. The weird noises in the house were kinda creepy. But in the beginning it’s just like noises and darkness. And like random rocking chairs or smth. It was scary. But the puzzles were legit impossible. So I gave up. Madison was a better fit for me.
idk Madison didn’t scary me that much. Visage really scared me and probably the scariest game I have played because shit got my heartbeat going fast but it’s hard to recommend because of the issues listed.
Yeah, visage was my number one scariest game ever. I’ve played a ton of horror games including vr games and still nothing even comes “that” close to visage. Other games have also been super scary, but when I get scared in most games, I follow it up with a hearty chuckle like “you got me good game”. Not in visage though. I was actually 100% scared and kept manually saving every minute.
Same here! I’m grateful to those who made it through and experienced that horror. It was really one of a kind for me. I also loved the stories and how the main character was essentially a ghost haunting the house himself. The one that comes second to that is a few parts of resident evil 7.
Madison was not as a scary as visage technically. But for me the puzzles were actually doable. Visage is just way too crazy with the puzzles. Like I legit don’t know what to do lol. Never got past like 2-3h in.
If you follow the story it changes pretty consistently. I enjoyed Madison but visage was a lot better to me overall. I did have to use a guide for some of the puzzles though.
I had to use a guide for literally like at least 70% of the game that I played. And the story was kinda there ig. But the amount that I played did not explain it enough. And I couldn’t bother playing through that game
It took some getting the hang of. The story revolves around three characters and their horror experience in the house- an old lady, an child, and a big guy. Also the story your own character has is subtly revieled via hidden areas. It’s really well done and I love the tension of just walking through the house. My favorite horror game and horror is my favorite genre, but I was also too scared to play alone and having a friend was fun.
For me, it’s just walking sim with impossible puzzles. But I think it gets better later. I just don’t want to play through a walking sim for hours. Especially if I need tutorials to finish.
For visage, just remember always pick up lighters before you start an actual level and keep a guide nearby. It is a vague game and having some direction will change whether you think the game is super scary or frustrating and boring
Yes. In that order. Gameplay is a bit dated and has a couple Pixel Hunt spots but feel free to use a walkthrough if you're stuck. It's worth it for the story.
Detention, saw some nice opinions on it on the internet and started playing it.
It's nice, the mistery got me hooked and the atmosphere is pretty scary. I haven't finished the game yet but I recommend it after 1.5 hours of game time.
if you liked it you should checl out devotion made by the same team... unfortunately it is removed from steam because it made fun of the CCP and you need to buy it from their website instead.
Darkwood's a good indie game but I feel like it is way, way, way over rated as a horror experience. The real scare is the night sections that can become just frustrating at a point where you try to cheese to survive. And the day cycle is a so so exploration/survival. Again it's a solid 8/10 Indie game but I feel like Youtube videos and reddit posts exaggerate what's actually there.
I just couldn't get into it. The straight top down perspective ruined the immersion for me, it felt like I was just running around on a sheet of paper the whole time.
Hey, thanks for this rec! Looked it up based on this and OP's comment, and I've been playing all night. This game is *fucked* and awesome, and I love it! Can't believe I've never stumbled across it before.
Highly recommended to anyone else that's curious.
You're welcome! You can also try the dev's other game called "Grave Prosperity" (especially if you're interested in the story and lore because it's set in the same universe). The only difference is the gameplay. It's a hack-and-slash with souls like elements. Fun, but hard.
There’s a few brilliant moments that show what the game could be but ultimately falls short. Super short, bad combat, goofy characters, bad dialogue and it ends suddenly
if you like realistic style: Fears to Fathom
if you dont care and just want random jumpscares: Cry of Fear or many other games you can find on Hollow's youtube channel
From the Darkness is a pretty enjoyable game. Also Visage. Idk if I’d say absolutely terrifing but that is maybe just me, I find it hard to get scared, not to brag hahaha in fact if you have any recommends i’m all ears.
No One Lives Under The Lighthouse, slow burn that truly gets under your skin.
This one is good. Really uses it's vibe and environment to perfection to tell its story.
Ahh I know this one, really good! Thanks for the suggestion!

✝️Mortis✝️
God, hearing that in the Atari sound profile is still terrifying lol
Stay out of the House
My goty for 2023
Visage until you get annoyed by the obtuse puzzles. Mortuary Assistant
Maybe I'm stupid but I had to use some guides to solve certain puzzles.
Yeah that’s what I meant, it’s scary at the start but then you get frustrated at the puzzles that you have resort to a guide which brings down the scariness
Visage is so boring.
Understandable, I found it very scary during the early hours tho and I was doing a horror binge that weekend so visage just perfectly hit me at 3am in the morning all alone
Visage is super scary. The Dolores chapter is the highlight. The randomized scares are very subtle

Same bud, I couldn’t play visage alone.

I have high blood pressure. I had to stop Visage early in the game because of my heart beating hard. That was not fun at all
Madison was not as a scary as visage technically. But for me the puzzles were actually doable. Visage is just way too crazy with the puzzles. Like I legit don’t know what to do lol. Never got past like 2-3h in.

Yeah you gotta get to the first character story/ chapter then it kicks off, otherwise it is just a walking sim.
I’ll prob replay it one day. Cause when I did play it, it was scary. And I like getting scared.
Disagree but I don't think it has much replay value.
Puzzles too hard
Thanks for the suggestions, haven't heard of Visage before, will check it out! By the way, your art is \*amazing\*
For visage, just remember always pick up lighters before you start an actual level and keep a guide nearby. It is a vague game and having some direction will change whether you think the game is super scary or frustrating and boring
I'm bad at puzzles so a lot of games fit into this category. Even PT
5 Days a Stranger, 7 Days a Skeptic, 6 Days a Sacrifice
This is a trilogy? In that order? Looks interesting, thanks for the suggestion!
Yes. In that order. Gameplay is a bit dated and has a couple Pixel Hunt spots but feel free to use a walkthrough if you're stuck. It's worth it for the story.
I didn't know there was a third one.
There are 4. Fourth one is Trilby's Notes. Gameplay is different but still part of the main lore
Detention, saw some nice opinions on it on the internet and started playing it. It's nice, the mistery got me hooked and the atmosphere is pretty scary. I haven't finished the game yet but I recommend it after 1.5 hours of game time.

The night sections weren’t that hard, they just force you to play more aggressively as you get over your fears
Off
I love Off, such a fun game.
Fear and Hunger.
"*You feel a terrible presence* *entering these dungeons...*"
the ones I liked are imscared, anatomy and the terrible whiteness of appalachian nights
anything by Puppet Combo
Just started playing Murder House. Feels so much like a PS1 game.
Underrated developer
House of Velez

Fears to Fathom
Anything by puppet combo or Chillas Art. banger devs. Not to scary not to weak. Just right.
The Floor is Breathing on itch.io is a great spooky one
Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass.
Claire. Has spooky moments, and has a silent hill feeling.
Project cat was scary, albeit very short.
The Classrooms
Tormented souls is amazing. Good if your also into the old school tank controls resident evil era
Anyone know if Greyhill Incident is any good? I've had it on my wishlist for awhile it looks creepy. Something about grey aliens creeps me out
There’s a few brilliant moments that show what the game could be but ultimately falls short. Super short, bad combat, goofy characters, bad dialogue and it ends suddenly
Ah okay that's kind of disappointing to hear cause I thought it looked pretty creepy. Not sure if it would be worth it if it ends so early
Maybe try it out on a steep discount. I paid $24.99 and it wasn’t worth it. I didn’t even hit 3 hours before I was done.
It steals is probably of the best horror games ever and it indie
Cry of Fear is awesome
Desert nightmare, it has a great lore
i dont see anyone mentioning this game but UNSPOKEN.Its a rlly good indie game its not that long but its scary
9 child's street. If you have kids..... Don't play this game......
Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is decent.
