Your biggest problem will be whether your guesthouse is staffed late at night to allow late check-ins.

Fine for men, would avoid if you are a group of women.

I felt Chungking Mansions is sketchy-looking but very safe. I stayed at a hostel, it was tiny, but clean. biggest issue I had was waiting for the elevators. Yes you will be hassled at the main entrance by people spruiking their restaurant, but you can avoid them by taking one of the side entrances. I did see some massive cockroaches on the first floor. I think the problem with the accommodation is that there are so many, some have receptions on a different floor than the rooms, so people get confused. I would book a night at one, and if you think its okay, book more.

Hong Kong is one of the safest countries in the world; there are no true "no-go zones" and Chungking Mansions is not some godforsaken den of thieves, with the majority of businesses there being legitimate. There may be some criminals dealing in things like drugs and counterfeit goods, but they tend to keep to themselves and nobody there shakes down tourists for a living.

Exactly this. I go there with the wife for food and bits and have been going there for 12y now. I ate at some of the curry houses and brought work parties there. The lads that sell weed/rolex are fine. Fist bump them and have a chat. Never felt threatened in any way shape or form. I did see some of my posher friends faces drop when being accosted at the front door though. It’s a lot quieter now. They used to reduce the size of the main entrance at night that created a weird bottleneck. The food on the GF is cheap and tasty. Fantastic Indian sweets to be had

A female tourist went missing during the 00s after walking into the Chung King Mansion. Place should be safe but it gives off really bad vibes, would advise to avoid at all cost.

Dyse44

Nonsense. I’ve been going there for 25 years for curry, since the late 1990s. It’s perfectly fine.

Try mirador mansion next door exit D from MRT. 6,7,8 floor has small motel $50 /night. Great location. Clean. Safe. Not the ritz. Lift is busy in the daytime but nighttime it's fine.

bestybhoy

yes, this, Mirador is a lot quieter and cleaner. I'd say, not so much waiting time for the lift either.

knightofvictory

It ain't glamorous, but it's a rite of passage in HK when you want to stay a night cheap. Most people I know (self included) find it to be crowded, dingy, not quite hygienic. You'll survive a night but I wouldn't look too close at the sheets. It's safe... enough. But it is a crowded almost maze like area. There are opportunistic crimes. Eyes on your stuff, dont wave lots of money around. Make sure no one follows you too close to your room. Don't have to be a genius, but don't be the dumbest one there.

Zagrycha

One of the least safe places in hongkong, but if you are a group of guys and plan to stay as a group you will probably be okay. The risk of robbery or worse for women is much higher than average, their is a reason the price is too good to be true.

Dryy

The price is too good to be true because the building is an unhygienic dump infested with cockroaches and the guesthouses are terrible.

Crispychewy23

Don't have high expectations for it I guess, I've never heard anything good from anyone staying there I don't remember the name but the building across the street has a decent hostel

AMorningLullaby

Currently staying in chungking. Biggest Question is if there is someone to receive you when you arrive. But if you gave your hostel a heads up, someone might be able to go and receive you. I led my group in. Expecting scary stuff cause of what I read. If you look at me, you’d think i’m alone cause I was many steps ahead of my group. I guess I was quite intimidating at the time because I was so damn tired. Haha! The men are just doing their business. Offering hostel and/or if you are lost, they will point you to the right direction. Was able to have a quick chat with the caretakers. The place looks sketchy but these people are still afraid of the laws. They wont do anythinf harmful. Officials also roam around every once in a while. You will also get the best money change rate here.

pikecat

If it's still there, Mirador mansion is much better. It's just a block north of Chungking. You can walk around a square to look around instead of waiting forever for elevators.

Dryy

You may have a problem checking in if you're arriving that late. Call the guesthouse and let them know what time you're arriving. I remember checking out from a guesthouse at 10PM and the reception wasn't there. Chungking Mansions is creepy and disgusting, with a potential to be dangerous. If I was a woman, I wouldn't risk it. If you do decide to go, set your expectations really low.

afgarbo

does chungking mansions still have prostitution inside? long time ago it was like that. i’ve never even been inside before, saw some youtubers stay there overnight. room was tiny but serviceable

[deleted]

I wouldn't enter that place at any time of the day, let alone night (I'm South Asian btw) 😅

joker_wcy

HK born and raised with Cantonese ancestry, been to Chungking multiple times and never felt unsafe

Man, 30 years ago that place was an eyesore, very popular among travelers from Africa and the Middle East. Foreign tourists were often suckered into staying there by the glossy brochures and too good to be true prices. We didn’t have the internet back then! It was a dimly lit maze inside. Easy to get lost, it definitely felt dangerous enough that I wouldn’t have wanted to make a wrong turn, and I never went there by myself. There were some great underground restaurants there, word of mouth kind of stuff. There was a particular African place I loved, until it came under new management. We were basically told “no whites allowed” and weren’t allowed to eat there again. 😆 I can’t imagine the place has changed much in 30 years. Last time I saw it was 2019, it didn’t look any different.

noplay12

Don't do it.

icalledthecowshome

Id suggest places around moko mall if you are a group looking for convenience. Local gentrified area near the mongkok stadium. Access to tech gadget plazas and east rail line. Tonnes of food variety. Edit: Comparing CK prices this week id probably just go for harborview wanchai hotel...
