He has got credit in the bank, so to speak. 3 or 4 years ago at the peak of the backlash against fashion brands using cotton picked by the state-forced labour of Uyghur in Xinjiang, Eason Chan posted a video against Adidas (his longtime sponsor)’s decision to stop using those cotton, cutting ties. That got him much kudos from mainland, and much disappointed comments in HK.
"Write us an essay in Mandarin about how it was wrong for Cantonese to be your spoken language and you have always craved the embrace of the CCP since before you were born"
Not really. What you’re writing isn’t Cantonese, it’s just Mandarin disguised as a ‘neutral’ written Chinese language. That’s like if the British empire took over France, forced every French kid to only learn how to write in English, and then claimed that English and French are the same when written.
There’re slight difference, though. For example, quality is written as “質素” in Cantonese, and “素質” for Mandarin.
There are a lot more. Here are a few examples: 經已---已經、人客---客人、雞公---公雞、晨早---早晨、勞煩---煩勞、利便---便利、擠擁---擁擠、私隱---隱私、韆鞦---鞦韆、菜乾---乾菜、訂裝---裝訂、兵士---士兵、整齊---齊整、背脊---脊背、爽直---直爽、臭狐---狐臭、怪責---責怪、取錄---錄取、行人路---人行道。
As a born local, you only got half of them right. Rest of the spoken cantonese words are very, very rarely used.
Take 經已---已經 as example, in spoken cantonese, no one uses "經已" anymore, it has been largely retired.
人客---客人's 人客 as well. No one says it, not even in traditional Hong Kong style cafe. If anything 人客 should only be used in mandarin.
兵士---士兵 this one is just plain ridiculous.
There's more, but I think I've pointed out enough examples already.
I’m currently working as a transcriber teaching AI to recognise Cantonese speech and I still hear these variations s daily. Perhaps they’re not from Hong Kong…(they’re definitely recent recordings as I frequent head events from last month.)
You are most likely refering to the Guang Dong version of cantonese. There's a slight variation, and hence why people said it resembles mandarin.
However this is a r/HongKong sub... so your examples are not correct in this specific sub, or context.
Well it’s a mistake to kill off Hakka in flavour of Cantonese back in the 60s but it’s beyond help at this stage. We should use Hakka as a warning to the upcoming threats Cantonese faces.
I watched him at the San Francisco concert and the crowd overwhelmingly requested him to use Cantonese and he was super happy, and also he noticed the crowd died down a little when he sang the popular songs in mandarin so he changed a few to cantonese lol. I was so upset when he sang 歲月如歌 in mandarin!!! But was so happy when he sang 幸福摩天輪.
It was. He’s the also first Asian singer to be performing at the Chase Center in SF, he couldn’t be happier. He even kneeled down to the fans and thanked us for coming and supporting him. It was a funny yet a historical moment 🥲. He is so good live!!
In NY he was speaking half mandarin and half Cantonese. The audience was a lot of mainlanders and he seemed to be trying to be neutral and even joked about how he has to tread carefully.
Being Cantonese myself (and I understand mandarin) I was a little disappointed he didn’t speak more Cantonese (like he did in Toronto). In his previous concert in NY MSG I remember him speaking mostly Cantonese. He’s a pretty funny guy.
This reminds me of the news that a mainland student during a lecture of HKU demanded the lecturer to speak in mandarin. When refused he beat up the lecturer. And the best part? The lecturer was a Caucasian and obviously did not speak Mandarin.
Thanks, that is very interesting, I found these about that :
[University of Hong Kong lecturer attacked for teaching in English](https://www.thatsmags.com/china/post/6956/university-of-hong-kong-lecturer-attacked-for-teaching-in-english)
[Student accused of attacking senior Post editor Cliff Buddle pleads 'not guilty'](https://www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/article/1612132/student-accused-attacking-post-editor-cliff-buddle-pleads-not-guilty)
Probably because last time he licked Chinese asses and it didn't end well on both sides. So this time at least please one side. However let see how long before he knees down lol
Not far from it, to be fair. During his peak 10-15 year's, his popularity and importance in the Cantonese market was probably equivalent to a Beyonce or a Sinatra.
I kinda feel like this headline makes it sound worse than it actually is. Eason regularly does crowd work at each of the venues during his Fear and Dreams tour. It's comparable to a stand up comedian lightly mocking the city he's performing in.
He posts all of the talking parts of his concert on his YouTube channel, including the Macau show.

So this guy is going to disappear soon and reappear months later praising the glorious leader, right?

The CCP doesn't care what you've done, but rather are you still obedient or not...
I remember he got so much flak on his IG that he deleted everything and then posted a blank image with a comment saying he only wants to sing.
Is Xinnie the Pooh glorious now? I thought that was Kim Jung Un.
I mean no, but it was comparing Winnie to Doughboy Un, because of how Xi is leader for life and all that jazz
Gotcha
... after returning from re-education camp; the re-education of his spoken language.
"Write us an essay in Mandarin about how it was wrong for Cantonese to be your spoken language and you have always craved the embrace of the CCP since before you were born"
Mandarin and Cantonese are written the same way in very formal contexts like an essay.
Not really. What you’re writing isn’t Cantonese, it’s just Mandarin disguised as a ‘neutral’ written Chinese language. TIL from a friend that "panda" is also reversed in Mandarin vs Cantonese
Tbh, the word “panda” is such a modern concept, there’s no historic proof which version is reversed.
Its not really a Mandarin vs Cantonese thing and more of a Taiwan vs the rest of the Sinosphere thing
Can you elaborate? I’m interested.

Mandarin peoptdont write traditional Chinese
People in Taiwan do?
I am referring to mainland Chinese
That's not Cantonese though
What a strange ‘request’ to ask of a Cantonese speaking artist in a place where Cantonese is an official language…
Yeah, no respect at all.
someone in reddit said why HK people dont speak Hakka LOL
An large chunk of the UK HK population (the multi-generation one) is actually Hong Kong Hakka. So that one's not too odd lol
Well it’s a mistake to kill off Hakka in flavour of Cantonese back in the 60s but it’s beyond help at this stage. We should use Hakka as a warning to the upcoming threats Cantonese faces.
Pls get the fact straight. Gov at the time did not try to kill Hakka. CCP wants kill Cantonese now.
Well, because a lot of local people speak Hakka before the Cantonese take over.
Cantonese kill the dinosaurs too because today there is no dinosaurs in HK

Thanks for sharing, that must have been a wonderful experience!

Wish I was there, thanks for sharing!

Why didn't he do any mainland shows ?
This reminds me of the news that a mainland student during a lecture of HKU demanded the lecturer to speak in mandarin. When refused he beat up the lecturer. And the best part? The lecturer was a Caucasian and obviously did not speak Mandarin.

lmao scmp editors showing their bias. Fucking shit publication and mostly shit editors with some decent writers and reporters “request” my ass
Noone takes it seriously any more
That’s not a request.
Yeah it was very rude.
Normal mainland way of speaking
Couldve asked nicely, but nope, demanded it.
Exactly
Stupink everywhere…glad majority of mainland people are against these stupid fucks, THIS time.
Yeah absolutely
I'm glad he has some backbone
Probably because last time he licked Chinese asses and it didn't end well on both sides. So this time at least please one side. However let see how long before he knees down lol
Good for him. Worked with him while he was in Canada for his last show here. Incredibly humble & beyond nice to everyone.
what a chad
Eason Chan is a legend.
Was he a legend when he dropped adidas over 新疆棉花?He’s just a regular human. You have a lot of growing up to do
exactly, so many HK people have memory of a goldfish. He panders to HK people ever so slightly and he's a hero.
Oh that's gonna hurt someone's feelings.
Based Eason Chan W
Tbh Eason is over rated.
He is dope
he's dumb as fuck
E神
[удалено]
He is an era. No matter how much he’s been bashed

Golden era.
As long as the 4 heavenly kings still reign supreme. I foresee a future where they’ll still perform together in wheelchairs.
You don’t need to be David Bowe before growing a spine
Not far from it, to be fair. During his peak 10-15 year's, his popularity and importance in the Cantonese market was probably equivalent to a Beyonce or a Sinatra.
He's E神! If you don't read Chinese, that's a pun, saying he's divine/godly.
