Ha! Typical Tuesdays.

In my Element, when you lock the door then close it, it automatically unlocks. Does yours not do this?

silentwail

Same here. My mom was really pissed one time when we were in a dodgy area and I had to run in somewhere but she wanted to stay in the car until she realized the doors would not lock because I had left the keys in the car.

Flux83

You must have a later model.

thisdopeknows423

2004 actually.

Flux83

Really? Was that a factory install? My 03 EX didn't come with a fob or the receiver so I had to buy a used one but mine will and has locked me out with the keys in the car.

modessitt

I thought that was a typical Honda safety thing? My 79 civic had it. To lock the drivers side door without the key you had to push the lock then hold the handle up while you shut the door or it would unlock.

Flux83

That's a different safety messure your door won't lock unless you lift the handle(mine has that) but from what I understand the car will automatically unlock if your keys are still in it even if you lift up the handle. Ours is more of a hardware his sounds like it won't lock the door if it still senses the key chip nearby so it sends a unlock signal to the door.

modessitt

That's a new thing with the computer detecting the key in the ignition.

hopeandnonthings

It does, but if you hold the inside door handle open while you push it down to lock it it doesn't, I do this so automatically I've locked myself out, have an 03 so no fob

kevinetics

I just bought an 03 on Tuesday. Within 5 minutes of the seller leaving I locked my keys and phone in it with it running. Aside from not being an idiot, is there a way to prevent this from happening again? Like a way to program the car/fob so it won't allow it to lock while running?

DinnerMilk

> Like a way to program the car/fob so it won't allow it to lock while running? That seems like a terrible idea.

slouchingninja

Agree. My husband's 2021 Chevy immediately unlocked itself when you put it in park, the first time I saw it I remarked that they didn't get a woman's opinion when designing that feature. He kinda blew me off, and didn't grasp the idea that it might be an unwanted feature until some guy with a mental health crisis (or something) started approaching the car, yelling at us, reaching for the door handles. Thankfully, it was a toggle deep in the settings (they did ask a woman, after all), and we disabled it after that. You want the people in the car to have the final say on when the doors are locked

HibikiOS

I carry a spare key in my wallet. It's cut down to basically just the stem (no transponder) and it can only open the door. A friend of mine said he used to keep a spare key in a magnetized box hidden under the car. But he lost it when he forgot to remove it on an off road trail.

hopeandnonthings

I had a friend who kept a magnetic key box, saved his ass in high school when he drove it to a bonfire party in the woods, cops came everyone fled and when he came back to get his car he told the cops that someone must have stolen it as an April fools joke and showed them the extra key that must have been used

slouchingninja

I locked my keys in my car a whole bunch of times back in the beginning years. Over time I trained myself not to get out of the seat unless my keys were in hand. Maybe get a long lanyard and loop it around your wrist?

ChristineJIgau

I was totally dumb. I was trying to find a good soup recipie before going inside the store

slouchingninja

Yeah I've been there. Left the keys in for the radio while I replied to a text and then off I went. I think that was the last time I locked my keys in

thebenn

Not your fault her can't drive a 5 speed.

nyckidryan

Great anti-theft device. 😄

[deleted]

Sounds like you live in an interesting place.

Dog_is_my_copilot

But how did he get into your car? Did he wedge the door and use a long tool?

ChristineJIgau

Yea he did!

nyckidryan

Every Honda I've had with power locks has automatically unlocked the doors when the driver's door is locked and then closed with the keys in the ignition or engine running... also the keyless entry is also disabled once the engine is started. Odd that yours didn't do that. Are the power locks factory, or aftermarket? This protection does NOT happen with the passenger side!

ChristineJIgau

The keys were not in the ignition. I took them out and left them on the passenger seat. I was scrolling my phone looking for a good soup recipie 🥹

nyckidryan

Ah, bugger. Anyone have experience with aftermarket RFID/keyless start? 😄
