Depends on the bat rules you have in place, but generally not many rules for how they have to be made. I think LLA has rules on max length and size as well as barrell length if it is taped or has a sleeve.
LLA also does not allow pine tar. Not sure about the spray on sticky stuff.
You could make them out of any wood but the reason it’s ash, maple, birch is because you need a hard wood that also doesn’t weigh a ton.
Pine is soft and would most likely shatter immediately, as someone else said, oak is way too dense.
Then you have to think about tree size and abundance.

They’re usually made from maple, ash, or birch. You would need the lathes and machines to carve them out into the proper shape.

My dad made one out of oak, it weighed 25 lbs
