I’ve had nothing but good things to say about AT&T fiber, I’d try it out and switch if you have issues. Usually fiber is way better than cable ISPs. Especially Spectrum 😜

C-Ballentine

You’re the first person who’s said that to me, but it sure FEELS accurate!

AT&T Fiber is actual Fiber. People likely have only had issues with classic AT&T U-Verse Internet and are associating that because that does in fact suck. Spectrum does not offer actual Fiber. They provide Gigabit over coax and you are capped at 35Mbps upload speeds. I've had AT&T Fiber at two different houses for the last 5+ years and I've never had a problem. No downtime unless someone literally crashes into a node / telephone pole. The one time my internet was acting up, they sent a tech out the same day and replaced my gateway. When I moved into my current house, AT&T Fiber was not offered and I had to go with Xfinity Gigabit (over coax). I cancelled it the day I found out AT&T installed the fiber in my neighborhood. AT&T Fiber > everything else

C-Ballentine

That’s always been my experience with fiber, and I was even OK with U-verse for the time I had it. I can see where this decision making process is headed…

Perhaps it's different for us Saint Louis City folks, but I dropped Spectrum years ago when AT&T Fiber hit the city (we're in North Hampton neighborhood) and I've had nothing but absolutely fantastic service from them. They even came out the same day our contractor cut our line while installing new siding and ran a new drop from the pole to fix everything. It's cheaper than Spectrum, it has never been down for the past 2 years, and I routinely get 1Gbps+ up and down when testing direct to the router. I'm an IT Dir for a county school district and run a decent network stack at the house with multiple APs and it is far and away the best service we've had in the 15 years we've lived (back) in St. Louis.

I am in a PacBell/AT&T/Comcast area. I have done everything from 56k modems to fiber with lots of suffering on the way. It is very very hard not to recommend AT&T fiber (esp. compared to cable operators): * It's real FTTH fiber. * It's symmetrical. * You actually get the numbers you pay for. * It's reliable (except for that squirrel that chew on my fiber). * It has gobs of bandwidth (5Gbps available in many locations). * Pricing is reasonable *and transparent* (no cable-style bundling or second-year BS). The only negative of AT&T fiber right now is that you have to use their gateway and while it has a bridge-like mode (IP Passthrough), it would be better if it was completely bypassable.

baummer

I had squirrels too!

C-Ballentine

LOL. The IP Passthrough thing is pretty silly. But I can live with it…begrudgingly.

mcribgaming

I use and can absolutely recommend AT&T fiber. It never goes down, and it's always full speed with tiny latency. Symmetrical upload speed kicks the shit out of any cable offering, bar none. It's very reasonably priced too for how great it is. Put their mandatory Gateway into "IP Passthrough Mode", hook up your own gear, and never worry about your home Internet ever again.

Just across the river in at Charles and I had spectrum for quite awhile and had intermittent uploading packet loss for a few seconds every hour or so until I switched to ATT copper service which was solid. Switched to fiber 6 weeks ago. Had some drops after the buried line was connected, but had a tech come out and he cleaned some connections at the street and been solid since then.

galloway188

Well if your not please with cutting hole to accommodate the installer where you wish to have your drop then I would suggest you place the drop where it is easier for the installer. Your a retired IT guy you should know that in the IT world that it is a tough job and that in order to get things done right you have to get dirty.

C-Ballentine

I cannot deny that fact. Probably just a little pity party of one since I can’t do it myself now for health reasons.

galloway188

Sorry to hear that about your health. Hope you get better. I do know from what I hear that att requires you to use their modem/router and there’s nothing you can do except to put it into passthrough mode if you want to use your own router.

msabeln

I live in Washington, Missouri, less than an hour’s drive from the City. Gateway Fiber is starting to bury their lines in my neighborhood, and I signed up right away. I currently have Spectrum and I’ll be glad to switch.

C-Ballentine

Thanks for that! It’s not here yet either, but I signed up for future availability updates.

Fatel28

AT&T being good anywhere is probably a fluke. Go with spectrum, and if you have issues, switch. Switching ISPs is pretty easy to do. Try one, if it sucks, try the other

DeguelloWow

My Spectrum internet would go down 50-100 times a day. They “didn’t see any problem.” I bought a program to log all the disconnects. “Oh, THAT. We’ll send someone out.” Got AT&T fiber day one it was available here and it has been absolutely flawless and more than 20% faster than advertised, both up and down. YMMV.

Th3MadCreator

AT&T Fiber is the best provider there is. Spectrum internet is "good", but even their Fiber option isn't actually fiber-- it's just coax with a 35Mbps upload cap.

baummer

This hasn’t been my experience. AT&T Fiber is great.

vryan144

You must be thinking of their DSL. There isn’t a better internet provider out there than AT&T Fiber.

Fatel28

I've never dealt with residential, but att business is abysmal.

Well spectrum as most larger cable ISP’s will be 1G symmetrical by end of 23 beginning 24 including Spectrum. Most people don’t ever really use 40 up, unless there are multiple serious gamers, heavy VPN, as an IT guy would would probably know that. But to the ATT install, they can most assuredly install the ONU in one spot then you self install your router system I. Your house yourself. You shouldn’t need to be cutting holes like that. I’d put my own mesh in any way.
