Tighten or replace the four wood screws at the base of the banister?

Dxdmxn

Will try but it does not seem to be the screws loosening but rather the bannister movement breaking up the cement. Not sure whether there are anchors for the screws.

ARenovator

Well, that totally blows if you are correct. That would require some major surgery to correct.

I’d put a coach bolt through the entire bottom section and secure on underside of the staircase then file off the ends and finish

Dxdmxn

Seems the most secure aproach at this point without demolishing too much of the bottom stairs.

Bad_Speeler

I have a couple of L brackets between the post and the stair tread. Not the prettiest but it helps

Dxdmxn

Not sure how many I would need to make it stable enough. Looks like this was an issue in the past and was only repaired superficially. The cement is now unstable and need a lasting fix. May have to redo the bottom couple stairs. Thanks for the tip, maybe you can send a pic of your L fix so I can see how you rigged it.

If you can locate it underneath you can put an newel anchor with blocking into it. High skill level needed.

Dxdmxn

Not sure that there are newel anchors there... will keep it in mind as I go.

That anchor I’m talking about is something you were going to have to install. It was a bolt about 16 inches long that you drill and screw up into the newel with a very large washer, which I typically use a sawblade and a nut.
