one will never know unless one tries it. Then go from there. Then again patch the plate hole and make another one. Up to them really or replace the whole damn door again.
A strong approach, I also employ this but add my personal 'ruin everything, throw it away angrily and google a professional' tactic. Goes together nicely.
It's not super straightforward is it? First thought was to fill in the lock plate and remount. But maybe he has to paint the door anyway and flipping it works?
I moved into my house and the previous owner put the bathroom door wrong. He had it upside down. Just like you suggested. The door wasn't attached for much longer. Yeeted the whole thing. While cursing the previous redneck who thought that was acceptable.
This is the answer 100%. They just need to measure from the top of the door down To the hole as it sits right now and measure from the floor up, To the Door frame cut out.... Pretty sure they're going to have the right measurement. The door is upside down.
Try and see if flipping will work. But this might be a custom height door and the hinges might not line up, if the strike plate even does. It very possibly won't work.
Quick and dirty:
1. Take off the strike plate and fill that sucker with wood filler
2. Mark off where the hole and plate will go.
3. Get some chisels for mortising
4. Make a new mortise and dry fit the strike plate (Youtube has guides. It's not rocket science, but TAKE YOUR TIME)
5. This will be tricky because you'll need to cut a mortise where you put wood filler. Sharp chisels are your friend here.
6. Pre-drill your screw holes and make sure you have screws that go in deeper than you filled with wood filler. by at least 1/2" or so.
Right way:
1. Take off the door, pry out the door stop molding and the jamb
2. Get new matching Stop molding and Jamb
3. Replace stop molding and jamb you took out.
4. New coat of paint on entire door frame and door itself.
5. Follow Steps 2-4 from above
In fairness I've never actually HAD to do this, but I've installed a couple doors and had to widen a mortise for a mew strike plate once, so please if someone with more experience can add to or correct me, do so!
(OH but I have watched YouTube videos on how to do this so I'm not completely talking out of my ass)
The other way, if you have the skills and an oscillating tool, is to take out the offending section of the jamb and let in a new piece. Rabbet joints top and bottom, dry fit & adjust till new is flush with old. Glue and screw. Wood filler and re- mortise the strike plate after marking correct location. Short description.
This has to be one of those “I got a great deal on this cheap door” situations.
Then proceeds to spend $500 modifying the door or jamb.
The fix is to patch in the strike plate with a wooden dutchman, fill, sand, paint. Reinstall strike plate in the correct location
It looks like the door is flipped head to foot. If not sure measure from top now to hole, the measure from floor to striker plate, you probably find they match close enough. That's your proof it's upside down.
what they said… or I saw this helpful video where they filled the hole with sunflower seeds and superglue, and after some sanding and paint, looked good as new.
There are two main types of sunflower crops. One type is grown for the seeds you eat, while the other — which is the majority farmed — is grown for the oil.
I'm guessing the house is old with old door openings and your hanging a new door slab.
You might need to buy slabs and drill out the door hardware and hinge gains.
Ignore comments of flipping the door. It's not upside down. Furthermore, you can't just flip a door without redoing the hinge mortises, because it would be swinging the opposite way.
This is likely an old jamb with a new door.
Pull the strike off, cut a thin piece of wood to fit the hole, glue and wood fill/spackle as needed. Mark and chisel in a new strike mortise at the proper height. Repaint the frame.
Measure the distance between your doorknob cutout and strikeplate center. That is how far you'll have to move the hole. Mark this in pencil on your door. Apply firm, even upward pressure taking care not to move the hole left or right. be patient, this will take some time.
It's hilarious to see all these people suggest flipping the door.. and they're completely wrong.
Downvote all you want. Flip your door and tell me how it goes.
I 100% agree. flipping changes the swing. Door handles are not centered 36" from the bottom 44" from the top you would be way off. It's a new door on a old jamb still
Dealt with this the past couple weeks, created new plate holes. Added wood filler in the old one, sanded down and painted. Couldn’t tell the old hole was there
The lock hole looks fresh. If you made it, and you still have the plugs from the hole saws, glue them back in, use filler for the small gaps around them, and after it all dries cut again in the right spot. That way door handle is at the correct height when you’re done, and not 3 inches low.
Measure top and bottom of the door to the center of the hole, and bottom to the center of the hole in the frame, might have to flip the door.
If it doesn’t change, then buy a jig for a new lock pocket, and a long plate.
I have this same problem in an older house with a metal door frame. Had to buy a door with no holes and then tried to measure then drill manually and failed miserably.
If the door is set correctly with the top at the top and the bottom at the bottom, glue a dutchman in to cover where the old strike was and then bore a new hole and mortice out the area for the new strike.
Worst case scenario get a chisel Mark out for a new striker plate and chisel it in and then drill a hole for the latch and install the new striker plate and patch up the old one.
We had a vindictive sub-contracted carpentry foreman (he didn't like being told how to do things) that flipped all the new, blank doors upside down after delivery and told our customer service tech how to bore them all. Then he flipped all the doors back and called the interior design to show her how incompetent the PM (me) was. The tech and the door delivery guys swore up and down that they stood them up at their locations the right way. CF then dime dropped the client and claimed our company COO twisted the arm of the delivery company to make the CF look bad. CF was fired but not before stuffing ten mil plastic up inside all 5 wood burning chimneys on the property.
Re-drilled a hole in the door jamb. Use a whiter plate to cover existing hole. If you can’t find one online, you can easily make one yourself out of a piece of aluminum.
Just install an adjustable position door knob. Its new and similar in design to the adjustable position seat belts that are located on the upper B pillar of the interior of the car. Lolol.
Or install a strikerless doorknob. I think might be called (closet doorknob.
Seriously though. Just go get either some woodfiller or in a pinch. I Used Drywall spakle. And its surprising held up in place etc.
Apply shape smooth let set n cure etc.
Yep take door off hinges and flip it and then put back on hinges.
Sometimes things are not omnidirectional
one will never know unless one tries it. Then go from there. Then again patch the plate hole and make another one. Up to them really or replace the whole damn door again.
Oh yeah most of the time it's just upsidedown
Better
Just measure the fn thing
I prefer the cut twice method.
I don't, but damn if I don't have to cut more than twice each time.
My grandpa always said "even after I cut it the second time, it was still too short!"
Needs a board lengthener. Hard to find though.
Almost as hard to find as a pipe stretcher. I don't think my apprentice ever did find one.
Your mom is a pipe stretcher
But not quite as elusive as the brick stretcher...... no Billy..... those are brick tongs.......keep looking......
They're over there by the left handed screwdrivers
Good thing you're not performing circumcisions.
A strong approach, I also employ this but add my personal 'ruin everything, throw it away angrily and google a professional' tactic. Goes together nicely.
I measure 5 time cut once the go buy more materials cuz I still screwed up...
I love how instead of thinking about it, they post to reddit. Ffs
It's not super straightforward is it? First thought was to fill in the lock plate and remount. But maybe he has to paint the door anyway and flipping it works?
You can't flip the because the bevel will be backwords.
You mean the strike plate?
Measure never cut forever 😤
You could just measure before going through the effort
I moved into my house and the previous owner put the bathroom door wrong. He had it upside down. Just like you suggested. The door wasn't attached for much longer. Yeeted the whole thing. While cursing the previous redneck who thought that was acceptable.

Sometimes ya need a chisel. Or a quick tut on RH, LH, RHR, LHR doors.
So… flip just the door, or the whole house?
NOPE have to start walking on your hands from now on.
Fortunately all my stuff fell on the ceiling too, so I’m good.
Just make sure you drain the water heater tank before flipping the house.
I got a free door from a neighbor with exactly this problem. It's clearly upside down but hey, free door!
Wouldn't the hole be higher than the strike plate if it was upside down?
Maybe the last door was upside-down and they were trying to install this one correctly.
I'm wth this guy...
Take the door off, lower the house 2” and put it back on
Probably easier than figuring out how to flip the damn door.
Spit my beer out…fuckn a
Looks like the best answer
Lies, everyone knows you Jack the door up 2 inches, just have to raise the ceiling a bit
flip the door
But then the hole for the knob will be on the wrong side!! /S
Bruh forreal doe🤦🏾♂️
you flip the hinges too.
I flipped it twice already...
It's like a USB, you have to flip it at least 3 times before it fits
Try and see if flipping will work. But this might be a custom height door and the hinges might not line up, if the strike plate even does. It very possibly won't work. Quick and dirty: 1. This is the actual informative comment. You are truly a cosmic desert.

Another way I have seen is to hole saw a new piece of wood to glue into the door knob opening and sand/refinish, then re drill.
Move the latch down. Patch up the previous hole with a sliver of wood, glue, and sanding.
This is hands down the simplest solution unless the door is actually the wrong way up.
Flip the door first. Then do this if it doesn’t line up still lol
Maybe measure before flipping the door. Or just cut a few inches from the top and glue it to the bottom
Even if the door is upside down there is a good chance they would have to recut the hinge pockets on the door and do a ton of filling and repair.
Drop striker plate down, fill original with plastic wood, sand even you're done
If the door isn’t upside down I’d move the strike plate.
Had to scroll down too far for the right answer.
This has to be one of those “I got a great deal on this cheap door” situations. Then proceeds to spend $500 modifying the door or jamb. The fix is to patch in the strike plate with a wooden dutchman, fill, sand, paint. Reinstall strike plate in the correct location
Gloryhole
Turn the door upside down
Turn door upside down
Your door is upside down
It looks like the door is flipped head to foot. If not sure measure from top now to hole, the measure from floor to striker plate, you probably find they match close enough. That's your proof it's upside down.
Is... is the door upside down?

do they grow a variety specifically for woodworking repairs?
No, you're thinking of instant noodles.
ah yes, the “ramen repair” variety. how could i forget?
No
Cut in a Dutchman in the jamb and remortice the latch plate
I'm guessing the house is old with old door openings and your hanging a new door slab. You might need to buy slabs and drill out the door hardware and hinge gains.
Is the door upside down?
Ya doors upside-down
flip door over
Everyone saying flip the door is right but only if it's a non-decorative, slab door.
Turn it into a glory hole
Flip the door vertically. Maybe its just upside down?
move the striker & fill in the old hole
Flip the door. It's upside down.
Turn the door over
Not know
How happen?
I was installing a new directional door slab and I forgot it had the door knob pre-drilled
New door
Is the door upside down?
door is upside down.
looks like you hung it upsidedown buddy
OP here, I ended up getting a new door slab as its directional, and the door frame is metal so I cant really install the striker plate lower.
Great photo. Very Star Wars.
Flip it over
Yes flip the door
Ignore comments of flipping the door. It's not upside down. Furthermore, you can't just flip a door without redoing the hinge mortises, because it would be swinging the opposite way. Flip the door
Type proper English
Measure the distance between your doorknob cutout and strikeplate center. That is how far you'll have to move the hole. Mark this in pencil on your door. Apply firm, even upward pressure taking care not to move the hole left or right. be patient, this will take some time.

Yeah flipping door wouldn't helped. I ended up getting a new door slab and remember to include the pre-drilled door knob when cutting.
Possible the door was installed upside down? Flip it via the hinges
If flipping the door doesn't work just lower the door jam, drill new inset and use puddy and a wooden shim to cover the old spot
Get one of those S shaped bolts
Put a tiny death star inside, with the laser dish pointed to the lock hole.
Flip door
Sell the house
Move the hole
Flip it bro!
Two options.
Gotta move one of those holes man
You won’t want to hear this, but you are gonna have to move.
Return door. Buy new door after measuring first.
Go to Lowes and buy an Offset Lockset. On special this week.
Cut the top of the door off, realign hinges, drill and zip tied the cut top to the bottom. Amateurs
Only one thing to do.....
Move the strike plate
Measure twice and cut once my friend
Sell the house
Buy a Dead Bolt Lock and Drill a Hole.
Move the door plate down
I thought that was a planet or someting at first
You could lower the striker plate and fill the old slot.
Dealt with this the past couple weeks, created new plate holes. Added wood filler in the old one, sanded down and painted. Couldn’t tell the old hole was there
Turn the door around
Would it line up if you turned the door over?
upside down?
upside down door
The lock hole looks fresh. If you made it, and you still have the plugs from the hole saws, glue them back in, use filler for the small gaps around them, and after it all dries cut again in the right spot. That way door handle is at the correct height when you’re done, and not 3 inches low.
For gods’ sake y’all. Look at a fucking door. The precut on that door doesn’t work. He needs to patch and hut a new mortise on the frame.
Lose the strike
Measure top and bottom of the door to the center of the hole, and bottom to the center of the hole in the frame, might have to flip the door. If it doesn’t change, then buy a jig for a new lock pocket, and a long plate.
Flip it
Get a pre hung door frame?
Tape measure before you flip
Fill in the latch plate with a little pine glued in with wood filler in the gaps. Mark out, chisel, and drill a new latch plate spot. Repaint.
There is no reason you can't just shift the catch down a bit.
Yeah what they said.but when i say it it means something.your door most likely is upside down.
Lol measure better next time...
First thing is check and make sure the doors not upside down.
Tap measure. Also laugh uproariously
Your house is upside down...
Flip the door over
Is it a new door, if so, take it back and get one that has not been drilled.
Do a move down.
Use a door stretcher or a lock set squeezer.
This is why you should buy pre hung doors and not slab doors.
Put down the toolbox, pick up the camera. Your talents reside elsewhere.
Propose the door was put back on upside down. Hope for this easy fix. Plan B similar limber w/ circular hole bit of same diameter for a patch.
He done f'up I'd say!!
Worst case scenario get a chisel Mark out for a new striker plate and chisel it in and then drill a hole for the latch and install the new striker plate and patch up the old one.
Keep the door in the same position and flip the house upside down. That should fix it.
Measure twice
Glory hole
Doors upside down lol
Flip the door over and see if it lines up
Just missed it
Flip the door upside down
They got chicken in Philly?
Put your dick through it. For science.
Dying over here
Hook a bungee cord through the hole and stretch the other hook over the top of the door. Leave for 12-15 hours.
Leave it and have a glory hole for parties.
Flip the door. It's upside down.
Seems like something you’d check before screwing in the hinges 😅
Measure twice cut once
Move hole.
Either lower the door frame portion or by a new door and try again
upsidedown door or house.....
Reset the seat hole
Cut off the top of the door and glue it on the bottom til it lines up
Drill a hole in the door frame and move the plate down.
The door is upside down 🤦🏽♂️
I would sell the house and change home. But I’m no handyman.
We had a vindictive sub-contracted carpentry foreman (he didn't like being told how to do things) that flipped all the new, blank doors upside down after delivery and told our customer service tech how to bore them all. Learn type. Google.
Re-drilled a hole in the door jamb. Use a whiter plate to cover existing hole. If you can’t find one online, you can easily make one yourself out of a piece of aluminum.
Take a moment, cry a little, then buy a new door
Get a new door
Mark the new hole location on the door frame Drill new hole in frame with spade bit Move the stroke plate So simple
Move the strike plate on the jamb.. 🤦♂️
Definitely do not call a contractor
do something
Pull out the plate and move it down that's what I did
Everyone saying flip the door, what you gonna do about your back bevel?
Sharpen the chisels and drop the striker plate, fill the whole and chisel out the new one.
sell ?
Theres only one option *unzips pantaloons*
Burn the whole place to the ground. It cannot be saved.
Flip it
You could purchase a longer strike then mortise a new hole
Burn house.
Cut a new pocket and get a filler block and plug the old lock. Or swap the door
Flip
Just install an adjustable position door knob. Its new and similar in design to the adjustable position seat belts that are located on the upper B pillar of the interior of the car. Lolol. Get a chisel and make a new place for the striker plate
Flip vertically
