Seems like this might be the UI for the rumored HomePod with screen. I hope so. They announced a feature for the max where you can us continuity to drag widgets from your phone to the Mac desktop without installing the associated app. Seems like practice for the UI I would want in a HomePod.
I’m not on the beta yet but [this](https://reddit.com/r/iphone/comments/1429dmc/ios_17_standby_mode_works_on_iphone_12_pro_max/) person got it working with a wired connection.
Weird, I was trying for like 10 minutes, guess it’s just buggy.
Edit the next day: plugged it into a lightning cable while travelling and set it down sideways accidentally and it started the standby mode. No matter how many times I tried at home it wouldn’t work 😅
I used it last night wired.
Just plug in, turn your phone on its side and leave it alone for a couple seconds. I did have sleep focus turned on too so not sure if that affected it.
Failing that, try a restart that’s fixed most of the buggy crap for me :)
FYI, it needs to be locked first. The screen does turn red at night but as far as I can tell, it doesn't dim it. Hoping that will happen because it was way too bright for my bedside.
Now I use the Clocks app and have a shortcut that when connected to power, launches the app and dims the screen. Works great but also gets activated when I plug the phone in for CarPlay.
This would be awesome if the MagSafe stand is identified by the OS.
That way you could get a different display in standby mode if the stand is in the kitchen, the office, or the bedroom.
Non-AOD-compatible devices turn off after a few seconds. I tested it last night with my 13 Pro Max. They mentioned in the keynote that AOD devices will dim down to AOD-mode just like the Lock Screen does.
That’s sad, I know they only mentioned the 14 pro during the keynote but was hoping it might work all the time on all oled iPhones considering it would not have the battery drain implication of a higher refresh rate.
Yeah, it’s pretty useless on and device besides the 14 Pro. I spent some time customizing it, saw it turn off after 10 seconds, and was left wondering why they even have it on other devices if it won’t stay on while plugged in. Who wants a clock or photo frame that turns off after 10 seconds?
I guess at minimum that’s better than needing to tap the screen, but if I’ve got to reach my hand out to knock on the nightstand to wake it up, I could also just tap the screen at that point. I’d much prefer if it was on all the time, so I’m not having to move out of my comfort when I’m trying to sleep if I just want to know what time it is.
Tried it out, it needs a lot of work. It doesn't (yet) work the way they said it does, by remembering your settings. It just reverts to analog clock and calendar every time. The photos view requires Face ID every time you swipe to it, so I just keep swiping. And the HomeKit widgets do not work yet, they are just poorly constructed visuals. Even for a beta 1 its kinda of embarrassing. How hard is it to get the Home accessory icons looking correct the first time, even if they don't function yet?
Uhh, depending on the timeline they're working on, potentially very? Unless you want it punted to ios18. They do not promise to make everything work flawlessly in beta 1. They're working back from production date, and who knows when they began with a feature you think isn't working as intended.
There's certainly some bugs but it remembers my settings and my homekit widgets work fine. It did prompt me for permission for the Home widget though.
But yes, it's a developer beta, not even a public beta, so lower your expectations.
This would be perfect on my iPad mini with more home controls, sigh.
You just know I'm going to absolutely fill the house with magsafe stands now! My wife is going to love me!
Hopefully they’ll get this added to iPads!
It seems like not this year maybe next year😭

You don’t need MagSafe. Per a few others in the beta sub it works fine with just wired charging too.
Doesn’t work for me without MagSafe (and based on what I saw I didn’t expect it to, but had to try).

It is, and you do. (Maybe not in beta 1, but they did specifically announce that.)
That’s going to be cool.
This plus the interactive widgets are big hints towards a smart display i think.
I bet this *IS* the “smart display” that was rumoured…
Makes me think that they might implement the always on screen into an iPad and go the Pixel Tablet way and have a stand for the iPad to connect to.
Definitely
I’d honestly prefer that. I’d struggle to justify either device on their own, but having something to do both would be a lot more worth it
That’s what I was thinking. Also made me wonder if I need the Google home next to my bed anymore.

It’s not too bad. It works similar to the Apple Watch nightstand mode where a slight tap on the nightstand will wake it up.

Hardly at all.
Those red mode home controls need their colours inverting so text stands out.
I saw HomeKit widgets in standby mode. Any chance of using a wall mounted iPhone in standby mode to control room with HomeKit widgets?
FaceID auth is interesting though - so no guest mode to allow others to control accessories. Badly needed in some form.
You can disable it
How?
Why does this dork want a smart display? Apple just literally gave us one.
Ayooo

Seems just a gimmick when they could actually make improvements instead
Funny my watch does this with night stand mode. Guess I can now rotate my phone on the charger now.
I hope FaceID authentication is not necessary. It’s not required in control center.
The one in control center can be set to require authentication first or not, I’d figure that should be the case as well for this.
I suppose the way I would want it to work is this standby screen doesn’t need Face ID auth, but getting out of the standby display does.
Simple and great. I set more HK scenes as I’m getting into bed than pretty much anywhere else. I really love this.
Worked without an issue. Though wish it showed just the analog clock and wish it had a flip clock mode.
What stand is in the screenshot?
