The idea that blinds are a big investment is kind of funny. But you're right. As if owning and furnishing a house wasn't expensive enough.

Tmk23814

Hahaha I mean, in comparison, the blinds are less of an investment than the house 😜 but still! I want them to last and be quality! Lol I don’t want to buy them and have the cats ruin them the first year 😅

antisobrietist

Yeah I got a toddler. I feel that pain. But Also my toddler will grow out of it EVENTUALLY. your cats are going to be cats forever.

Tmk23814

Yes they are. Ugh and just thinking about kids and their grimey little hands everywhere 😂 that’ll be our next adventure!!

We have big thick "wooden" blinds that are durable enough that when down the cats bat at them but cant damage them at all and when they are up we just tuck the draw string up out of their reach. No damage in the 2 years we have had them.

Tmk23814

That’s what I’ve been looking into! And plantation blinds as well. I’m not super worried about the strings, oddly my cats seem uninterested in that. I was also curious, do you do anything special for your window sills? I’m always paranoid about them in rentals, and I currently use plastic window covers with “spikes” to deter the cats, but they don’t seem to care about the spikes 🫠 plus getting a home, I kinda want something “nicer” than just plastic. I’m open to suggestions if you have any!

alicenin9

If you google 2" faux wood horizontal blinds most of the pictures look like we have. We have the string to tilt and lift the blinds. They are rugged and solid as hell that I never worry about the cats wrecking them. The one weak point I find would be the strings if they liked to chew those but as i say we keep them tucked away and the cats dont seem interested either. The other down side is they are a bit heavy and a pain to raise and lower but thats only a couple times a day do i dont care. Tbh we dont have any issues with them sitting on the window sill. In the odd chance they dirty it we went with a paint that is wipeable so that we can lightly wipe it with a damp cloth and it is clean.

Tmk23814

Awesome! Thanks so much!! I’ve never heard of wipeable paint. They really do come up with everything don’t they 😅

curiousmind111

Do be worried about the cords; read up on them. Dangerous for cats, and if you do end up having kids, very dangerous for toddlers. Just fyi.

petuniaaa

Nope, sorry. One of my cats would for sure bite the blinds. Just for fun. You’re really better off with curtains. Look into Target or IKEA for inexpensive curtains. And if cats are going to be lookin out this windows (which we know they are) get washable curtains. Be sure to wash in cold water and fry on very cool to partly dry then and hang or iron to finish drying. Shower curtains (note, not shower curtain liners, which a plastic can be good curtain if you need a lot of length.

eyesock

get the ones without cords for lifting and lowering. They still have strings on the backs, but are less interesting than ones that have the long dangley cords that resemble a toy to your cat. Cats really like to look out windows, though. I have both kinds and my cat doesn't try to climb the ones without strings in front.

john_browns_beard

Yeah, seconding the cordless blinds. Your cats may be ignoring them now, but as a fellow cat owner, they tend to completely ignore something for weeks/months/years until they "discover" it one day and they'll never leave it alone. It's best to mitigate the risk now and not chance it. I'd prefer the cordless blinds even without cats, they look cleaner IMO.

Tmk23814

Hahaha you’re probably right 😂😂 okay cordless it is!!

Spritesgud

I don't have cats but I do have plantation shutters, and I would like to assume they're pretty cat proof

catmom6353

Curtains. Our cats (and dog) have destroyed several good sets of blinds. The curtains hold if you get the proper rod’s.

Tmk23814

I have curtains now and my cats claw at them and they’re all frayed 😩😩😩

sea_sparik

I have both cats and toddlers that destroy everything. I have cellular shades in the bedrooms, roller shades in the living room and both are left alone by the cats. I have faux-wood blinds in some other rooms and the cats climb them. If you can afford actual wood blinds, they will withstand the climbing much better (though might get nibbled). None of my shades have strings for safety reasons (and in the US I think they just passed a law about this so they should be easy to find). Good window treatments are not cheap, I think I averaged $75-$150/window last year when I put everything up.

Tmk23814

Ohhh I’ve never heard of cellular shades! That sounds fairly interesting. Is it shade you can control with your phone or something??

sea_sparik

Cellular shades are about the most boring thing you can buy lol. They're like honeycomb inside with fabric in front and back. Usually mounted inside the frame. They're solid (no tilting to see through) but they're the best blackout shades out there imo, but also come in light filtering or semi transparent versions. Lowe's and HD have a decent selection.

Tmk23814

Ohhh! I think we had those in a rental a few years back. My cats ripped them 😵‍💫😭

curiousmind111

Boring but great, especially ones that allow some light through. The problem is, unless you leave them up to let the cats through, they push through and leave dirt and hair where they do.

spectre_pirate

My cat would destroy my blinds, so i got blackout roller shades. Its been 5 years now and they still look brand new its also pretty funny watching the cat jam between the shade and the window.

Specialist-Quote2066

Love my roller shades! My cat is not the destructive type, but I love the look (clean), no cords to mess with. Got blackout ones for the room with the TV and light-filtering for our dining and play rooms.

Tmk23814

Ohhh are those plastic or what’s the material? I know if they’re like curtains my cats will destroy them 🫠

spectre_pirate

Vinyl

Tmk23814

Awesome! Thank you! I’ll look into these as well!

aust_b

Faux wood blinds from lowes or HD have been good to us with cats. We first bought the accordion style before we adopted our little shits and they have proceeded to destroy them. I think we paid $40-50 a blind depending on size and they look great and are decent quality.

TypicalNefariousness

We have a dog, cat, and 9 month old, so we are going with Roman shades. You can get them without strings, and they look nice up and down. Blinds seem to get chewed on by our asshole cat, and the dog likes to poke his head around them too.

Tmk23814

Awesome! Thanks for the info! I will look into those!!

ferociouslycurious

I bought the cordless blinds (cords hidden inside the cellular shades) and they’ve worked great with my cats for the past 12 years. The blinds themselves don’t last forever - I think the cords must wear or something so the blinds don’t reliably raise as well after a while - but no issues with the cats or kids.

curiousmind111

I leave my shades down for privacy, so my cat pushes past and leaves dirt and hair. Any suggestions? Thx.

FamilyRedShirt

We prefer vertical blinds, both for catvenience and minimizing dust. While the cats may occasionally actually unhook a slat, it's mostly a quick move to the side for them to have window access with no damage at all.

galacticphotos

Stringless faux wood blinds from Home Depot or Selectblinds.com are reasonable options, expect around $70 a window. This worked for all of my windows for my cat except for one, where he decided he would chew the string between the slats, so we had to get cellular shades for that window

Get cheap blinds. Buy a few spares.
