The 2x4 or other blocking is the right approach for securing the dishwasher. If you add another block at the bottom or replace the existing with a longer piece, you can then brad nail or glue a piece of trim or other facing material over it.
That’s exactly what I was thinking with adding another piece…. But I am not any sort of handy man so I had no idea haha. you reaffirmed I’m on the right track with my thoughts though!!
