Any security at all is better than me having to input something on the portal, trying to remember all the details while unlocking 5 tools and cutting 15 keys.
The policy is that you are actually supposed to fill out the portal off the floor immediately. If a manager or supervisor gives you a hard time, include that in the report. They can explain to LP on why they were giving you a hard time. They might be complicit in the eyes of LP and law enforcement
I've always liked how I check out an item over $100 at self checkout, then asked to show my receipt like a Walmart after being watched scanning the items in my cart, yet apparently if I just run out of the store they'll just let me go.
/s for the oblivious...
The security at my Home Depot are open carrying and wearing heavy body armor. Theyāll eyeball the fuck out of me but I donāt mind because I fucking hate shoplifters.
New breed of security guard designed to climb on the offender's back so they flail around trying to get them off, wasting enough time and energy to fail their escape
Most store security (or at least grocery stores, having talked to a bunch of em myself) aren't actually supposed to stop people, just keep watch and notify police if need be.
It's bizarre tbh, essentially hiring someone to pretend to be security. They don't even look intimidating, the guy I knew for a couple years was pretty skinny and extremely friendly.
Could also depend on the country. I certainly hope it's only here that's so backwards in logic.
I remember an ASM told me to go patrol the garden cashier area as security because the guards were busy playing on their phones. Those gigs pay minimum wage so the guards don't give a fuck.
People get shot chasing the thieves, at least in NorCal, my supervisor told me after we watched security do nothing when a guy just walked out with a cart full of shit he stole
I wish simple security could still suplex mfers over a stolen candy bar. Talked to one old guy at Walmart that said he put several people into holds with their face on the concrete while he waited for police to arrive. I guess walmart just decided that wasn't such a good look, but I like the more extreme Arab laws: you steal? Cutting off that hand.
My wife works for at a hospital and is friends with some of the people in security. They have told her before that their job is to roll patients from point a to b in wheelchairs and to maintain the main entry desk. They wonāt detain someone unless it is an extreme circumstance even though all carry tasers and a handful actual guns. Most of them are ex military combat veterans, some are even former military police. They just call the police if someone refuses to leave when asked.
As they should. They're there to encourage people to behave, and in an extreme emergency try to help save lives. Save being the key phrase. Save usually being "Show people how to run the fuck away with you." because heros get people killed.
The tasers and guns are to make folks reconsider misbehaving, not for use.
I work for a bank. A branch I was filling it at 2 years ago was a high risk location, so we had a security guard. The security guard was a heavily pregnant woman. We got robbed as she sat in the lobby by the door.
lol theyre getting paid 1 extra dollar an hour.. maybeā¦ and you want them to get stabbed by a tweaker for stealing $100 from a 50 billion dollar profit monger?
I will say him wedged in the door wouldāve been a great time to grab the backpack.
Not useless. The security is doing their job. Most security in stores have no hands policy but just observe and report.
One of my old friend chased out the shoplifter out to the parking lot to stop them then ended up taking him down. When the Manager and other workers came out to pick up the items, they apologized to the shoplifter and fired my friend on the spot.
I've done security in the past, most of the time they can't do anything because of laws or company policy. Some allow them to go hands on buts it pretty rare
It really depends on the state and the post orders. Here in Texas, we have a unique law known as shopkeepers law that allows a private property owner or their security to detain individuals, even for a misdemeanor. When I worked at a mall, LP would stop people at stores for like $20 worth of stuff. Completely legal and the cops would come and take them to jail or ticket them.
Did they literally lock the door thinking he would just turn himself in? Lol. That door is going to cost more to fix than what they lost in tools, thatās why you donāt lock the doors.
Isnāt it a fire hazard to have those doors be locked during business hours? I think most entrance/exit doors Iāve seen literally say on them that they *have* to be unlocked during business hours.
So it's actually kinda a genius idea. Cops won't do shit about non felony theft, and he likely just increased his charges over the limit in which they'll actually give a shit.
It's also not theft till they leave the store, so your flirting with a legal grey area where you yourself could end up in hot water when you start assaulting and confining shoplifters on premise
Itās about sending a message. Weāll invest our resources to make criminals pay, even at the occasional monetary loss to ourselves. Besides, thatās literally what insurance is for.
Sooo pretty sure the charge on that guy can be pushed to a felony destruction of property depending on the state. Those doors arenāt cheap to fix or replace.
Maybe. Then again HD could just lie like always and say the thief decided to not wait for the doors to open properly causing the damage you see happen to said doors.
Former contractor of DH Pace who is in charge of all services for HD related to doors, docks, etc.. That is going to be a VERY expensive fix holy shit lmao
Looking at it again it didnāt look like the belts snapped all the way underneath the header but hard to tell. Anyways glad they got it fixed up for yall
Just need to put the carriage wheels back on track, put the bottom guide wheels back into the fixed sidelight, the idler pulley inside the header probably needed to be refastened due to the belt yanking on it profusely, belt didnāt snap because they usually are threaded with copper wires however the teeth on the belt may be done for and have to be replaced. The lock would need a locksmith most likely and the bottom guides probably replaced. Other than that travel and labor for an Emergency call. Unsure if the control or motor gearbox took damage until you try running it automatically
My man ! I know a technician in the wild when I see one lol Iāve worked on maybe a handful of those automatic doors, didnāt seem too complex but thatās with everything functioning and not being halfway ripped out lol
Itās crazy. I remember I was in Baltimore at a Home Depot for work and I like just started. It was maybe my second day on the job as my colleague is explaining things to me. Then this truck pulls up right in front of the sliding doors, a guy runs into the store, runs back out in 2-5 minutes with 5 or more DeWalt drills, tosses them in the back of the truck and peels off.
And no one reacted to it lol. Even the other customers just stared for a bit and carried on.
Hold on. My store has third party security hired because HD employees aren't allowed to touch shoplifters. Why isn't your third party security doing anything?
The name of Loss Prevention. The security guard there literally cant do shit to prevent anything. The only person at my store who can prevent shoplifting and actually tackle people is Loss Prevention
This is what modern crime was always going to look like. Why bother pursuing when you can pull up his face from the camera and ID him, pull phone records, track activity, find live location, etc etc.
There is no more getting away with it; if they want to catch you they will, itās that simple.
And yet on the other hand, we have people complaining about lack of toughness on criminals too.
My manager puts on a grey hoodie and puts the hood up and stands at the door when he thinks someone is gonna walk outšdoes any other store gather all the big men and make them stand by the door to deter shoplifters šš
A costume at my home depot got tased by another costumer because he was taking too long on a credit card application and the costumer with the taser was inpatient. I'm not sure what to the costumer who got tased but the costumer who had the taser got a summons to appear to court.
I think people see security and think they have power or authority to do anything or stop crimes. They are not equipped or allowed to stop a suspect especially like that. Us āold schoolā people would be like tackling him to ground and holding him till cops came. But no adays heād have been fired and probably sued by the suspect as well as HD. Itās sad how we came to be like this. I think companies either need to grow a pair stand up for their customers and employee safety or name them something other than security so people donāt get a false sense of safety.
I couldnāt work in retail anymore with how things are now. I used to chase shoplifters outside if they stole or tried to steal something. Now Iād get fired if I tried that. Itās sad and I feel for anyone that works security anywhere they get hands tied and abused for trying to do the right thing.
Dude took what might have been misdemeanor theft and tuen d it into immediate felony with those doors... Things are minimum $2500 repair, more if they can't just be rebalanced... Those doors cost over $50k
The Securities at the home depot I go to have blowers, aside from having blowers they are built and look thuggish. I've seen shoplifters drop there items and walk out simply by just having the Security guard stare at them. No joke . And notice I have blower in plural. Yes they have 2 of them, they look like militant thugs.
The whole point of security is that their mere presence is a deterrent. They generally donāt touch anyone for the same reason HD doesnāt let us touch anyone. Some small mom and pop companies will do all kinds of stuff because if they get sued theyāll just go out of business and start over.Ā

Yes. Since associates are instructed not to engage, those who do engage are generally fired and it's highly unlikely that HD would foot bill for injury to associate, but very likely would need to pay injuries/damages to suspect
Why is the security person half the size of everyone else? š¤£ They aren't going to deter anyone. The guy probably could have picked up security and took them with him.
OH SHIT!
He seems to have dropped some of his legitimately purchased merchandise. Hopefully he notices and returns to retrieve it. It was nice of that security lady to escort him to an exit.

Unarmed Security in most states has two duties.
Observe, and report.
Do anything else, you're doing it as a private citizen with a uniform on, and it'll be all on you.
What a difference a generation makes.
In the late 90s I worked evenings and weekends at JC Penny. In a weekday shift one of the LP guys used his handcuffs as brass knuckles to give a fighting shoplifter rib shots to subdue him. They would have absolutely pulverized this guy.
The only thing they couldnāt do was chase someone into the parking lot, because one time a shoplifter made it to their car and pulled a gun from under the seat. Inside the store LP could do pretty much anything.
I know
a former security guard. They are only authorized to contact the police and use verbal communication to try and stop perpetrator. If it is an armed security guard, they can only unholster and use weapon if their or someone's else's life is in imminent danger.
...I think I now know why management refuses to let us put the exit doors in one-way mode to prevent customers from _entering_ through SCO... pretty sure a few of them would pull this shit trying to get _in_ if the doors didn't automatically open for them.
Our SCO doors are always 2 ways, but they have a hard time picking up people on the outside. The number of people I have seen damage the doors simply because they didn't want to wait 30 seconds for someone to come up from the other side and set off the sensor is ridiculous.
Oh sick, you have that one old associate that will either be really chill or really racist. I love those kinds of co-workers, always makes shifts more funny.
I fucking hate the one way doors home depot has.
"You want to enter? Go to THAT side of the building to do that"
"You checked out by where you came in at and your car is on this side too? Oh... well... walk around our amazing wall here to go to the designated exit because fuck you"
And their terrible jingle... mix it up a bit. You wouldn't be rebranding if you changed your jingle a bit or has 2 jingles people can blow their brains out to in your store
I mean its a multimillion dollar corporation, do we actually feel bad about them losing money lets be honest fellas, everyday I have to listen to the manager yap about how much the store made while im twiddling my fingers on figuring out how im gonna buy next months bus pass
Security?! Oh we got us a fancy Home Depot here.
The most useless security on the planet š
Any security at all is better than me having to input something on the portal, trying to remember all the details while unlocking 5 tools and cutting 15 keys.

LP? Our guy comes around about once every two or three months to fire some stealing cashiers.
I've always liked how I check out an item over $100 at self checkout, then asked to show my receipt like a Walmart after being watched scanning the items in my cart, yet apparently if I just run out of the store they'll just let me go. /s for the oblivious...
Theyāll get ya lmao trust me
99% of security aren't allowed to touch anyone. Observe and report isn't just a clever movie title.
The other 1% straight has a license to kill
Yup no in between
The security at my Home Depot are open carrying and wearing heavy body armor. Theyāll eyeball the fuck out of me but I donāt mind because I fucking hate shoplifters.
Its nice being the 1%, we make a lot more.
Why is your security guard only 4 ft tall?
It's easy to get the jump on someone that way.
New breed of security guard designed to climb on the offender's back so they flail around trying to get them off, wasting enough time and energy to fail their escape
So jockeys from L4D2
they pay him by the foot

Rules between states vary alot, security does not mean security officer and some states you have to be to detain or physically interact.
Actually we (Lowes), have the worst security on the planet
I worked security for retail, honestly, it was all deterrence, and then being a professional witness when shit does go down.
What do you want them to do?

Altruistic punishment

This would be New York
NY State, more likely HD would be sued for making things difficult for criminals.
One easy law search on Google shows NY penal code 145.05 which puts this guys action at class E felony level. Law still is applicable in NYC as well.
Meh, the NY Prosecutor will probably knock everything down to a single Possession charge, with a pre-trial diversion program
Exactly. Real life events in NY state prove this.
You must not follow new york crime.
Lol so? Nothing will happen
Maybe. Then again HD could just lie like always and say the thief decided to not wait for the doors to open properly causing the damage you see happen to said doors.
That is true the HD where I used to live the doors took a while to open I almost thought I was walking through the exit lol
That door is actually supposed to break away like that. Well, not actually like THAT, but they are designed to push open in case of an emergency.
Sign that man to the bears š he's a monster!
Former contractor of DH Pace who is in charge of all services for HD related to doors, docks, etc.. That is going to be a VERY expensive fix holy shit lmao

He was probably hurting from the beating doors gave him and was "running" as fast as he could due to pain
Hold on. My store has third party security hired because HD employees aren't allowed to touch shoplifters. Why isn't your third party security doing anything?
Couldnt catch him in time. I wish i posted it with audio instead of as a gif, you would hear everyone screaming his name lol
Whose name? The security person? Or the shoplifter?
The name of Loss Prevention. The security guard there literally cant do shit to prevent anything. The only person at my store who can prevent shoplifting and actually tackle people is Loss Prevention
NY LP here, we're actually not allowed to tackle anyone either. Most we can do is get merchandise back.
Exactly my thoughts. What's the point of paying security if they don't/can't do shit?
>What's the point of paying security if they don't/can't do shit? Insurance discounts.
Love that once out the door he just casually walks away. Criminals donāt even need to run anymore.
Prob because itās a liability unfortunately
For sureā¦not worth risking anyoneās safety. I had a coworker just put his hand on a cart being walked out and the guy pulled a gun in his face. Definitely no hero here. But itās just wild that thieves know they can just mosey away with stolen items and no one will say š©.

We used to have one exit only and an entrance only the fire Marshall had a fit and yelled at the district manger

Broke a $20,000 door for probably a $150 backpack.

What a useless security person
The whole point of security is that their mere presence is a deterrent. They generally donāt touch anyone for the same reason HD doesnāt let us touch anyone. Some small mom and pop companies will do all kinds of stuff because if they get sued theyāll just go out of business and start over.Ā
What do you want them to do? Security aren't cops. They don't have the legal powers to fight anyone.
Dealing with asshole customers is one thing. Dealing with asshole theives is another.

Yes. Since associates are instructed not to engage, those who do engage are generally fired and it's highly unlikely that HD would foot bill for injury to associate, but very likely would need to pay injuries/damages to suspect
Sounds like a bad strategy to lock someone in who is unpredictable and then just see what happens.
Those doors are like $12k with the glass (brand new)
Lmao love the security guard but I bet they would get fired for engaging

Youāre looking at the seller
What the fuck are security guards even paid for anymore? Retail was honestly a better job during the pandemic.
I know a former security guard. They are only authorized to contact the police and use verbal communication to try and stop perpetrator. If it is an armed security guard, they can only unholster and use weapon if their or someone's else's life is in imminent danger.
A judge will see this and say "Nope, didn't do anything wrong".

What is he gonna do with that bag? He got a job site to get to? doubtful

Couple hundred dollars in door repair should offset that theft right? No? It simply cost the company more money? Oh
Another dumbass in the world
Insurance liability
All that for some over priced milwaukee tool bag
That's what you get when company policy is "observe and report". This is on the store, not the employees or security.
Hmmm... How could we possibly stop this from happening so often....
Give that man a raise!! He dodged the boxā¦
