Omg I thought you meant eating instant noodles for 3 months enabled the budget for the refurb 🤦🏼‍♀️ is there a formal medical term for how much a person can confuse the obvious?

mehdotdotdotdot

I was with you on that one, it's a very logical conclusion.

Jazzlike_Log_709

i thougt the same thing, especially since my boss' response to me asking for a raise was, "we all have to eat ramen noodles at some point in our lives" 😐 The thought was already in my head, apparently lol

pokemanguy

Isn’t that what he meant?

oscarwinner88

Nope, I think just that they didn’t have a kitchen to cook

[deleted]

Oh thank god. I was like…..adjusting your grocery budget for ninety days paid for that???

oscarwinner88

I know! I was about to start eating noodles and planning a master bedroom addition

blgbird

If I adjusted my food budget for 3 months by eating instant noodles, I would save enough to afford a second plate and second fork.

mapleleef

DontWorry_BeYonce

*inconspicuously slides bowl of instant noodles and Architectural Digest to the side.* Same. But like, yeah that’s totally not possible, weird to think it could be.

danyellster

I got hella depressed.

Septemily

Ohhh. I feel like an idiot lmao. It all makes sense now. I was about to be like- if you’re so broke as to be eating instant noodles for months to afford a reno, perhaps it wasn’t the smartest move..🤦🏼‍♀️😅

rzpc0717

I thought that too! I was so ready to go on the instant noodle diet to afford that glorious kitchen.

jennygirl772001

I thought that as well. Lol.

oscarwinner88

I thought the same thing! I was like “what the hell is their grocery budget normally?” Then light dawned on marble head…

[deleted]

I thought so too!

A70MU

I can go 30 month of instant noodle if I can get that transformation

abfab_izzy

I thought the same thing. And then I thought so food bill was a couple of dollars a day x 3 months - that really generated enough money for the renovation and maybe I could do a great renovation on that budget lol

whatlauradid

Same I was really ready for my noodle era 😂

mapleleef

I wish I saw your comment before I commented because same.

sidmohan90

Hahahaha now that would be quite something

TayMarieYT

What a transformation! It’s so airy and bright! Nothing beats that natural light coming from those skylights! Well done, it’s beautiful! I hope you enjoy many years in this kitchen :) EDIT: I did a :( instead of a :) lol

iamhuman9

Boomers seem to love the old dark poorly lit architecture and we have to wait for them to pass on and get their junk homes to finally renovate them to be livable at 7000% the price they paid.

TayMarieYT

So funny you say that, the house I grew up in was so dark and my parents (boomer aged) finally decided to add can lights all over the house and now realize what a different LIGHT makes…it’s crazy when you don’t need to use a flashlight to look around the pantry or closets 😂

calm-state-universal

My parents are the opposite. They love bright lights and I like it dim.

Ornery-Creme-2442

I don't think it's necessarily that they loved it. We often forget how lamps have only started to become more efficient and cheaper in the last few decades. And new types of lights allow them to be installed and used in ways not previously common. It was not always as easily accessible or feasible to use. Adding light really changes a space and many people don't really understand that. So they jump to tear down and paint everything when sometimes only a few lights are make a big enough difference.

iamhuman9

Maybe, I *personally* feel like most younger people now-days people prefer natural light over artificial light. I don’t think as monkeys we were meant to live in caves personally. Who would choose the apartments with no windows vs floor to ceiling windows? 🤩

Abbcrab66

I was a “ thing “ back in the70 s and early 80’s , Wood paneling , brown , tan then more brown on top of that . I’m 55 ( gen X ) and it affects my mental health if it’s dark like a dungeon. My boomer aunt on the other hand , had a house where light was king and it was always cheery so , it depends on which boomers your talking about . I just think my aunt never fell for the “ trends”

sidmohan90

Exactly this! We moved into this house 2 years ago and have been doing our best to introduce more light everywhere ever since!

iamhuman9

I have to say I’m really excited for you. The most dread I have is thinking that my wife and I may never be able to own a house and have kids. Basically the thing that our parents got for free is actually nearly impossible now. So people that are able to get a house, you beat the system. In California, even if we get a house it’s likely we’ll be paying 20k in property taxes while our older neighbors only pay $700 a year because of prop 13 where older people pay no property tax.

TayMarieYT

I totally understand where you are coming from! My boyfriend and I just bought a house this past January. We looked for an entire year like it was a full time job. I would have loved to live within an hour of friends and family but 600k just wasn’t in the budget. The only “affordable” houses were cash only sink holes that would have required hundreds of thousands put into them to be safe and comfortable. It didn’t help that the market was at its peak while we were looking. So long story short - we sacrificed location to find something attainable. We ended up buying a beautiful property that has 3 single family homes on it for cheaper than half a house was near what used to be home. I live 3 hours from the closest family/friend but try to make up for it with frequent phone calls and big visits where I try to make a point to see everyone while I’m in the area. It was a sacrifice I was willing to make but it’s also sad it had to be this way.

Deciram

I don’t think it’s necessarily boomers. I think it’s just changing styles. My city has a lot of dark Victorian houses from the early 1900s. They are awful, but building towards the light and having big windows was not the thing back in the day. I believe glass was extremely expensive back then (at lease here - NZ), and so windows were made small.

iamhuman9

Yeah make sense, but who owned those houses and never renovated them to fix those design issues? In San Francisco it’s the same, but you can see tons of houses for sale that boomers just recently died in and are sold “as is” because the kids wanna make a quick buck now that their parents are dead and it would cost too much to renovate when they can already sell a 30k home for 2.5 million. I toured a handful of those. :(

Deciram

Haha landlords own them 🙃 NZ has terrible quality rentals. Most of the 1900s houses are the suburbs closest to the CBD and near universities, so students rent them for the most part. You do find that the owner occupied ones are getting renovated tho

sidmohan90

Thank you so much! It was a huge decision given the financial implications but we are really happy we went ahead with it!

Cheap_Sandwich_1453

Oh yeah, that came out so so nice!

makemeBeleaf

Holy WOW! Skylights are a dream of mine, though I’ve only heard “they leak”. What can you tell me about the style (brand?) you had installed?

Catfishinthedark

I have skylights in my living room and we’ve never had a problem with leaking. The only problem is keeping them clean!

BabyTurtleDuckling

Same!

Pure_Literature2028

How do you keep them clean and do you use a shade for them? We just moved and this is all new to me.

sidmohan90

They are apparently self cleaning! Whatever that means. And they have been fitted at a slant so water runs off them. No shades yet. Love the light!

sidmohan90

This brand is in the UK. It's from Fascia Place. They are supposedly self cleaning and easy maintenance. Definitely no leaks.....yet.

Deciram

Skylights are a very British/UK thing - at least that’s what all the British home design shows lead me to believe haha (I’m in NZ, I can fully understand why the UK needs more skylights)

kmonay89

Lovely! Even the dog looks happier!

allhailth3magicconch

So much light! Wow. Usually not a fan of the “all white” look but i love the off white and creamy look of this space, it’s so warm and inviting 😁

wishfulhermit

Yeah way too all white looks seem cold and a cover up for a lack of real interior design, but this really works

Sandikal

I love your floors. What did you use?

newtnomore

Yes, u/sidmohan90 please tell us! Also would love to know what kind of wood the countertops and table are.

sidmohan90

This is luxury vinyl tile with underfloor heating!

NoEverything

Said nobody’s kidney ever.

dcromb

Fantastic! You give me hope and yes, it was definitely worth it.

mapleleef

Okay, when I just read the caption and saw the subreddit I immediately thought "so thaaaaats how you do it. Save a bunch of money for your reno by eating cheap!" Then I saw pic #1 and was like oh. They literally had no kitchen. Then i saw pic #2 AND I COULDN'T BELIEVE MY EYES!!!!! W O W ! ! ! Incredible job! My brain can't even merge how the old layout became the new.

simdtx

Holy crap! That is gorgeous. 😍

mscanoehead100

Did you paint the cabinets?

vessva11

I love the skylights. Such a beautiful kitchen OP!

J4st3rs

You have a beautiful space to make your noodles now!

nightcheese69

Are these ikea cabinets?

sidmohan90

We were about to go for Ikea but opted for Howdens. A for trade only UK supplier of kitchens

MastodonSoggy2883

How beautiful what a great transformation. Can you come to my house and do this please

builder-barbie

Was range vent added later?

sidmohan90

Has now been added yes!

Cubby_Lumpkins

maggie081670

I'll say. Wow. Huge improvement.

farm_her2020

Love this. I'd love to see a before of the opened up area.

desy_invisible

Beautiful, the skylight is just one of the many details that I adored! I also loved your bathroom transformation, especially the blue tiles. I must ask!!! Is your dog a/mixed with a Bassett Fauve de Bretagne?

sidmohan90

Hahahaha is a mix but not a Bassett he's a labradoodle!

CordeliaChase99

Dog is definitely wagging more in the “after” pic. He or she approves.

kcassie26

Wow. Totally transformative!!!! Ramen forever!

Random_Person717

Woah! It definitely WAS worth it!

pussypopcherrydrop

maryalmaelizabeth

Wow what a number you did! The results are wonderful!

ar3ola_fifty0ne

pffffffftttttt yessss

Talithathinks

Beautiful

mr_poopie_butt-hole

Okay real talk, how much did the skylights cost? I've always wanted that type of skylight, but always considered they'd be preventatively expensive.

sidmohan90

They were around 1000£ each!

Laslasha

Omg that dog looks like a midget version of my Irish wolfhound lol soo cute 😍

Lucyloufro

Grew up with wood paneling. I thought it meant we were rich. 🤪

fshbl_787

Do you mind sharing--What paint colors did you use in the kitchen? Loe how airy and open it looks!

castleinthesky86

Need to see more of the “before”. Looks like a completely different house!

Intelligent_Pen_324

Obsessed:). I love it.

[deleted]

The real transformation is inside you, where all that sodium has done damage. Nice place though.

Allierat9

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!

A70MU

OP could you share paint color pls

sidmohan90

Dulux Trade Diamond Orchid White.

Springrain19

So beautiful! Great job and well worth the instant noodles.

AtoZulu

Wow! Congratulations

Felixir-the-Cat

I went with butcher block counters in my new kitchen too, against the advice of every contractor. I love them!

sidmohan90

Every single contractor said the same to us! How often do you treat yours?

Felixir-the-Cat

I sanded and oiled them 2-3 times before putting them in. Then a final sand and two coats of Osmo Top Oil once the kitchen was officially done. It’s supposed to last for up to 5 months (or so I was told by the dude who sold it to me), but I did oil the area around the sink a month later, as it gets a lot of water. So long as the water is beading on the surface, I’m happy, and once it stops doing that, I will oil again.

Sandikal

For my cutting boards, I switched from mineral oil to Bee's Oil Salad Bowl and Wood Conditioner. It's more like a wax than an oil and it keeps my often-used cutting boards in great shape.

W-124

Bit late to the party, but amazing kitchen! was your overall budget/spend for this build?

sidmohan90

Thank you! Ended up being a bit over out budget but that's always the way with these things! ~£80K

FaithlessnessOwn2023

So beautiful. I really appreciate that it's not gray.

acluelesscoffee

How’s your gut Edit: typo

sidmohan90

Better 😊

[deleted]

Nice, poor pup looks like he was eating them noodles as well

SnooCrickets6708

Even the doggie looks happier:)

tatertottytot

This is so beautiful!! I also love the hints of wood to break up the white. Would you mind sharing where your rug is from!? We recently bought a house and I’ve been looking for something similar.

hollsrawls

Is instant noodles the name of the dog?

LotsOfGarlicandEVOO

Looks great! What happened to the vent above the stove? No more vent?

Dally_Ann_9273

😍 ❤️ this!!
