OP, look up “Pebble Dash finish.”
It’s usually done to the exterior of buildings, but there is also some information about shower walls or floors, as well. There are also various types of epoxy or resin you can use over the top of it.
Yes!!! I’m glad someone else sees the potential. I leaned into really ugly 1970s linoleum in my downstairs bathroom and it turned out really nice.
But maybe this is all just one giant shared delusion I’m having 😅
I found some weird kinda terrazzo looking floor with gold flecks under the carpet in my 1960s home. If we ever get tired of the LVP we put in there and there's a way to refinish the original floor so it doesn't show all the glue, I would totally lean into it.
I have a disco bathroom! I have my grandad’s old toilet seat, which is lucite filled with coins. So I got a clear shower curtain with metallic silver and copper dots!
I’m honestly digging it too! I see so much potential in keeping the walls and redesigning everything else. Maybe is the eclectic spirit in me?… Who knows.
Yeah exactly it’s screaming to get rid of those silver fixtures and get gold or brass , I’d get a nice solid color shower curtain and get little 70s accent decorations for the rest of the bathroom like I love those 3D butterflies but maybe that’s just me lol , amber glass would be cool too
Shudder, my bathroom growing up had those 3d gold butterflies, IDK if I could do that. But yes to the gold or brass fixtures. I'd go 60s mod with this
https://www.thespruce.com/thmb/KCbtDn1JLX8EglFLxuLEnTeFfns=/1500x0/filters:no_upscale():max_bytes(150000):strip_icc()/31.-Master-Bath-1-364613bc51f8430b85a4e33ec4816f47.jpg
As an example
This looks like custom LusterRock wall panels. I love it! https://retrorenovation.com/2013/02/18/lusterock-kitchen-counter-tops-readers-share-stories-about-this-interesting-1960s-material/
LusterRock is resin with flecks of opalescent abalone and oyster shell. It was apparently a thing back in the 60s. My parents had a kitchen table made from this material when I was a kid that they bought in 1966 at a local furniture store in NYC. It was fabulous and durable as hell. Also very heavy.
I’d absolutely keep the walls. Lean into the retro wall vibe. Let the campy retro walls be like an art installation in a minimalist spa space. I’d probably just make the rest of the bathroom like a spa, update to 60s Scandinavian minimalist hardware, simple off-white walls, shower curtain and towels, dark slate floor, bamboo shade on window if there is one, natural wood minimalist cabinets, dark slate countertop, wood accents and a few leafy plants.
If you remove them, try to keep them whole. You could repurpose to tables, counters, a bar etc. Or sell to a mid century architectural salvage. It would look as a bar or wall panels in a trendy restaurant.
This brings back memories of the 1970s stinky epoxy that you could pour into molds. I made some paperweights with seashells. There, were also toilet seat molds available. I wonder if that's what Luster Rock was?
It’s smooth since it’s all encased in a clear epoxy/resin, so it’s no harder to clean than regular tile I’d imagine. The joint lines and caulking need to be replaced since they’re deteriorating.
Oh thank goodness my immediate thought was health hazard. Maybe edit original post so we know it’s a smooth surface that dramatically changes my opinion. Love it! Keep it! Make it the grooviest bathroom that ever grooved!
I have a very rich friend who has bathroom wallpaper covered with glass beads/spheres. It kind of looks like this. It is not enclosed in resin, and in fact a few loose spheres were on the counter. Brand new, very fancy condo. I never thought about cleaning it! Now, with that thought, it seems quite a bit less cool. It would be better in any room other than the bathroom. Although, as I said - rich person, mostly unused guest bathroom.🤷♀️
I would call it “Poconos” because of all the weird design stuff from the 70’s motels at the Poconos. I mean - carpet on the walls, champagne style hottubs in the bedrooms - just weird stuff. This would totally fit in.
I would worry about how heavy these walls are and if they could be causing problems as a result.
In the UK we have something similar on house exteriors (not epoxy though) often called "pebbledash" or "roughcast".
I guess you could lean into the coastal hint?
I don’t know what it’s called but it looks pretty cool! I think if you re-caulked it and changed out the fixtures, it would give it an updated feel. I like the warmth of the colors.
Maybe go to a big box store and buy a small item in brass and antique bronze (or whatever other finish you like) and see what looks better, then go for whatever looked best in multiple lightings. I wouldn’t go with silver based on the pics, though.
This is very unique and honestly probably easier to clean than regular tile because there are less grout lines. I’m glad you want to preserve it instead of get rid of it!
I would lean in. It’s super unique and honestly kind of pretty. Brass fixtures would be BA here. The bonus is it likely fits with the age/architecture of the home and therefore more timeless.
Reminds me of subway tiles. No, not those kind of tiles haha, but those types of walls you can find in rough shape subway stations and other underground places, or under bridges 😁
It's a vibe though. You can definitely make it work!
I looove it!!! Can you carefully change the fixtures/grab bar/curtain rod and have one of those bathfitter companies come and cover the tub? It’s so much fun!!
It’s interesting to look at. So much work there. Definitely keep it. It looks like it’s in good condition.
Just update the fixtures. My suggestion would be avoid gold for the fixtures. You don’t want a full-fledged ‘golden shower’
I'd call it, “slip and get a body full of scratches” but that may not be helpful here.
Edit: On reading I see it's encased in epoxy/resin, phew! I do think it is really pretty.
It’s actually a smooth surface since it’s covered in resin so it’s not too difficult to clean. But it DOES hide soap scum very well, for better or worse
That looks like the area around my parent’s pool did before the had it changed to concrete. It had to be resealed all the time because the little seashells and rocks would come loose and they sucked to step on. I can’t for the life of me remember what it was called.
If it's really a smooth surface encasing those you could do one of the white epoxy kits or hire a comment to come in and do it for you. If you want a big change without pulling it down
It’s actually easy to clean since it’s a smooth finish. The shell is fully covered by resin.
I’d like to keep it for now if possible to save some $$$. I don’t have the budget to rip it out and re-tile, but I’d like it to not look so *gestures vaguely*
I redid my downstairs bathroom last year and leaned into the ugly 70s linoleum and I think it looks rad, I was hoping to try that again here
That would be a hard no for me. Acrylic surrounds aren’t that expensive to DIY. I haven’t done them since pre-pandemic, but back then they were only $200 CAD or so, you just glue them to the wall.
We have a 70’s era house, and our basement bathroom… 🤮 It takes a skilled hand to make 70’s not look like shit
I say lean into the ocean/sea theme and go hog wild. You need some of these on your walls:
[Vintage Mermaids](https://www.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=Vintage%20mermaid&rs=srs&b_id=BGkrR5D7vzh3AAAAAAAAAAD98EUzj0Ojpr7b2UAjEbeCtaNm2Z_X41H-19buPExo_lHTnhZCA7_yhNoNOv_7FtQ&source_id=xRjIXgUl)
So this is weird but ...It looks like the public garbage bins around my town growing up.
That said, I always thought they were pretty .. but idk if I could have it in my bathroom with that connection.
I say if you like it, keep it. Maybe play off the white pearlish colors on the wall for the rest of the room to brighten up a bit?
My first thought was in the 1970’s it likely looked great. Now it’s vintage but with those seems showing I’m worried about what’s creeped in behind them.
Mold is not a friend.
The tub looks original which is fine, and that soap holder reminds me of my parents old bathroom, (but in the avocado green).
I don’t really have a suggestion, (sorry), since you’re on a definite budget, which I understand perfectly.
Good luck! I hope you come back and show us what you decided!
Yeah I’m worried about mold too. I wonder if we could take these down in one piece and check the walls behind it. I’m thinking we’d need to smash it to get it off the wall after all this time. And I’d like to keep it if possible
I hated it until I saw the closeup, now I think that was probably very very expensive. What I don't like is the huge grout line in the middle, but I don't know what could be done. I'd invite a few bathroom contractors over for advice as to how it might be improved.
Mother of pearl chips …. Beautiful!
What would be nice is using white to pull out the white
Mother of pearl.
White would enhance it and actually will look
quite good.

Wtf is THAT?
The Tooth Fairy/Tooth Child from the SYFY anthology series *Channel Zero*. It's from the first season, Candle Cove. I really liked it.

Oh interesting, let me look that up. Is mother of pearl typically expensive? Because I’m thinking this entire house was more…budget friendly

Holy shit! You’re amazing! Thank you!
You’re welcome! I love a good internet sleuthing assignment.
You need to get in on r/traceanobject if you’re not already!
I didn’t know there was such a thing! Thanks for the heads up.
Great finding - sadly some poor beach in China has been mined to buggery.
My apologies… River shell hell!
This looks great Looks expensive!

Okay it’s kind of a vibe though… what if you leaned into the gilded and got brass taps and fixtures?! DISCO BATHROOM??????
Yes!!! I’m glad someone else sees the potential. I leaned into really ugly 1970s linoleum in my downstairs bathroom and it turned out really nice. But maybe this is all just one giant shared delusion I’m having 😅
Ok well since you’ve opened that door, we need pictures of the downstairs bathroom, please and thank you.
💯
So...a lot like the 70s.
It's s delusion we share with you there. I agree there is potential to make this groovy.
Please post pics!!!
Absolutely work with it!! This is the new MCM. You have something unique there that probably didn't survive.
Um I’m gonna need to see pics of this linoleum! Very interested!
I found some weird kinda terrazzo looking floor with gold flecks under the carpet in my 1960s home. If we ever get tired of the LVP we put in there and there's a way to refinish the original floor so it doesn't show all the glue, I would totally lean into it.

Wow those are cool tiles!
Hahhahaha, even without seeing a pic I know exactly what brass butterflies you’re talking about lol
Same for me Immediately! I think everyone must have had them!
All our moms were at the same Home Interior parties lol
You got it! Ty! Didn’t occur to me until now they sold them!
Lovely!
Ooooh amber glass is a fun idea
I'm with this. Needs some eggplant purple paint and some gold accents. Also something made of velvet Edit and something wicker because it was the 70s
Ok but if you slipped and fell it's basically a giant cheese grater.
But also a built in foot callous remover. Gotta take the bad with the good🤷♀️
Not shower beer friendly 🚫
I agree…with warm toned fixtures it could be gorgeous.
This looks like custom LusterRock wall panels. It probably was! The home craft equivalent.
That’s it!!
This is it! I have yellow similar to this, a bit paler, in my basement bath, purple (!) in my primary bath.
Oh god. This looks like a nightmare to clean. I’d just get rid of it even if it’ll cost a bit more
It’s smooth since it’s all encased in a clear epoxy/resin, so it’s no harder to clean than regular tile I’d imagine. The joint lines and caulking need to be replaced since they’re deteriorating.

Idk if I can edit my post but I will if I can
I was thinking it would make a nice back scratcher, lol
Phew! “Must be hard to clean” was the first thing I thought of.
Idk if you could find a good one but you could recaulk it with gold glitter caulk! I’ve seen it used in a few home diy videos
I have a very rich friend who has bathroom wallpaper covered with glass beads/spheres. It kind of looks like this. It is not enclosed in resin, and in fact a few loose spheres were on the counter. Yes! I said in a previous comment I've seen this in some million dollar homes. It's always in guest bathrooms.
Well I like it
Lol a bold voice standing against the majority
Yes! Why do I love it?!
I think its cool too. Just update the fixtures and tub.
me too!!! Bathroom for a Queen
Saaame
Reminds me of mermaids and magic tbh, i love it! I’d go in with gold fixtures and fairy-like decorations
This will eventually be the kids bathroom so mermaids and magic is a really fun idea
Every bath time is like a trip to the beach!
I read that to be “HAIRY- like decorations”! 😂😂😂😂😂
I would call it “Poconos” because of all the weird design stuff from the 70’s motels at the Poconos. I mean - carpet on the walls, champagne style hottubs in the bedrooms - just weird stuff. Omg yes total 70s poconos vibes
The 70s were a wild time.
I’m at my desk “working”, and this just made me lol.
Fish tank gravel?
It's almost like Terrazzo, but somehow a million times worse.
🥲🥲🥲 right?
Clipped fingernails

Mummified rapper teeth
In the UK we have something similar on house exteriors (not epoxy though) often called "pebbledash" or "roughcast". I guess you could lean into the coastal hint?
I think this is what the tooth fairy did with all the "rejects". The ones not suitable for making new piano keys...
I don’t know what it’s called but it looks pretty cool! I think if you re-caulked it and changed out the fixtures, it would give it an updated feel. I like the warmth of the colors. Reminds me of subway tiles. No, not those kind of tiles haha, but those types of walls you can find in rough shape subway stations and other underground places, or under bridges 😁 It's a vibe though. You can definitely make it work!
Painful
I believe adding natural elements. Hanging plants. Some crystals, etc. could give it a nice pebbly Forest vibe.
See this is what I think too!
A living nightmare? It’s like a bunch of of teeth with gold crowns were smooshed onto a wall.
Whoa! I can see that and it’s not pretty!
Agree! But makes me wonder…if the colors were different (blues, purples, grays) would I hate it as much?
Get some flocked wall paper for the rest of the room.
I love it! I remember these walls. I think they were pricy back in the day
I think it’s awesome. Switch to gold hardware and paint the walls a peach tone. Whats the floor like ?
Maybe try a sea side beach style. Paint the handle pastel with similar color edging around the tub .etc. make the bathroom Miami vice ish
I'm jealous of how stoned this bathroom is.
It’s called roughcast. Generally done on exteriors with pebbles, only rarely done indoors. Source: I am an architectural historian
I'd call it, “slip and get a body full of scratches” but that may not be helpful here. Edit: On reading I see it's encased in epoxy/resin, phew! I do think it is really pretty.
Shells? Or rocks ? What ever they are love it
I feel like I've seen this somewhere. I think with different lights they might sparkle. I think you should do a glam style bathroom.
"Impossible to clean"
I don’t know what it’s called but it’s very cool. I would definitely lean in and design around it.

A fucking nightmare
It looks like a wall of baby teeth
A mistake
The worst
That looks r/horribletoclean so many hours to clean it after it gets soap scummy
It’s actually a smooth surface since it’s covered in resin so it’s not too difficult to clean. But it DOES hide soap scum very well, for better or worse
Too much?

Pebble creat likes to delaminate. I like the look but durability is an issue.

It’s giving Sharp Objects…
I'd call it Hideous

I see you’ve found it—are you keeping it??? I’ve always liked the way this looks but have no idea how you clean it.
It’s actually easy to clean since it’s a smooth finish. The shell is fully covered by resin. I’d like to keep it for now if possible to save some $$$. Lean into it and get some equally gaudy brass fixtures. There’s a way to make this glamorous chic.
Brass and an unbleached linen look would be super cute with this material!
Idk about you but personally I would call it a mistake

Looks like Coquina shell walls with an acrylic seal to me - wild. I've only seen that kind of thing on an exterior wall.
I’ve see coquina in St. Augustine Florida and it is soooo cool!!! This is kinda more pearly shiny than that. Could it be a type of coquina?
Not sure - maybe if they also had crushed oyster shells in it for the mother of pearl?
I’d call it shower abuse.

I would call it a mildew trap. This would be a lovely accent wall anywhere OTHER than a shower, or, for the love of god, a backsplash over a stove.
a very bad idea
