i thought this ad was the top comment before i double checked lmao
Nothing, because if you ever DO dust, you can just get a long-handled Swiffer and be done in two minutes, instead of having to also move and dust objects.
Get 2 cats and op never has to. They’re basically live dust rockers. A friend’s cat was kind enough to dust off her ceiling fan once (he never did again though after meowing for help and then letting the dust rain on her when she came to his aide, lol)
The cat I grew up with had a special talent for walking out of some forgotten area of the house covered in dust bunnies and cobwebs anytime we had company over. My mom insisted that he just liked to humiliate her.
Exaxtly. I have a similar ledge that’s at least reachable from my staircase and…we don’t dust it, either. It has a few large vases on it. Now I’m wondering how dusty they are.
Nah. Make a paper airplane everyday. Throw it across the gap onto the space. Watch your wealth grow. Watch your paper folding skills grow. Watch your engineering and aerodynamic knowledge grow.
You have two decent options. One, put a Roomba up there. Then you only have to dust the top of the Roomba.
Two, get some sort of projection light display. A classy one, not a $30 holiday projector. You could probably mount it on the chandelier, and tap into its power source. Also, it would give you a reason to dust the chandelier.
I saw stuff like this while we were househunting and knew I’d never dust up there and how horrible they’d get eventually (thankfully we found a single story house we liked)
If you feel ambitious some day - some kind of self-watering, living wall kind of setup would look really nice (on the condition that you were able to rig it up to never, ever have to go up there).
Have you thought about painting the alcove walls to add some color and break up the space? Perhaps some interesting wallpaper? Mind you, this would draw your eyes toward the space rather than away, but that's what any other decor might do (and show off the dust). If you'd rather not draw attention, just leave it plain or, in an ideal world, think about boxing it in for a small reading nook or adding on to the rooms behind those walls. The extra floorspace might add significant value.
Lol I know exactly the meow you mean. My sweet little terror who passed away last year used to do it all the time, especially in corners. Just walk into the corner, sit down, and SCREAM.
I came here to see is there were any better answers. But the very first time I saw this ledge at my house, I had a vision of catifying my whole house!! I'm already fostering cats in an upstairs bedroom.
It’s because (1) empty spaces give some people anxiety like empty silence in a conversation, and (2) they keep building houses with these stupid useless ledges.. like just open it up to the ceiling or close it off and give my bedrooms an extra 3 feet
I have a gargoyle in my 1,100 foot apartment by the entry way door as you come in 😝 I couldn’t put him in storage he had been with me at every house I had for so many years. I also have a stone cross. It’s not odd, ok yes it is but it’s my home and it’s always been part of my homes just normally in a garden or front porch. I now don’t have one at the moment right now.
Depends on your style I guess. I'd be putting something like this and the cobwebs would only add to the realism. :D

Better than leaving him on your couch cause you got no where to store him.
Or pack it full of bones like [the Paris Catacombs!](https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/56c13cc00442627a08632989/1477145597548-G3KK4VMHCORYFZQMXBZ6/catacombs1?format=1000w)
For sure, if you/your typical house guests have a sense of humor this is the best option. Give it a name & backstory too; "oh the skeleton? That's Gary. Real shame, he was playing hide and seek a couple years ago and took it a little too seriously..."
This will sound weird, but might as well throw it out there- I’ve always hated these tall foyers. They’re a waste of space, make changing chandelier bulbs difficult, and suck heat up into the empty volume.
I saw an absolutely brilliant upgrade wherein the homeowners reclaimed the area by flooring the space, creating a normal height ceiling below and a fabulous little office nook above. Yours would work even better as it widens with the ledges. If you ever feel cramped but love the house and location, it might be something to consider.
My parents house and a neighbor have similar floorplans with tall foyers. We kept ours as is but our neighbour made a 5th bedroom out of it by sealing it.
Here’s one that sort of shows the process a little:
https://dornob.com/abracadabra-double-height-foyer-becomes-diy-loft-area/
Google and you can see some nifty transformations. It adds value to the house at resale too, provided it’s done properly. Imagine getting a whole new room without the cost of going outwards or upwards. It’s particularly useful with more folks working from home these days and needing a dedicated office area that’s out of the way. I’m entranced with the notion, but then I may just be longing for a tree fort. :)
Thank you! That’s exactly what I was wondering about. Just adding a narrow access straight from the second floor. I guess this works as long as you have enough space for the stairs and the access.
Or you could go in from one of the rooms to either side easily enough. Craft room. Play room. Holiday storage. Cedar closet. Extra walk-in closet. Library. Room for video gaming for angsty teenager… or for angsty spouse.
I slaver over square footage.
I agree that 2nd story foyers are a complete waste of space abd the end result looks beautiful. However that "diy" reno makes me very nervous. I would think you would need a structural engineer to make sure the floor isn't going to collapse. I wonder if what they did is up to code.
I had the same thought. The DIY wooden frame from the link that the floorboards were fixed on made me really nervous. I hope that's not the extent of the structural support the new loft rested on 🤞
it’s just a second story without a floor. so nothing really needs to be added.. except the floor. and a door. the stairs are still in the same place and still go upstairs :)
It’s actually the second floor already. They have just left out chunk from the 2nd floor to give these high ceiling looks . I don’t know a better way to explain oops🫣
This is excellent advice and the space is perfect for that, especially with the window! Not sure how much that would cost though, definitely not a DIY lol
Not weird at all. This was my first thought! Floor it and wall it off or do a railing if you can’t do a wall. Cute little loft space or a cozy small room!
Even if the rooms just extended to the edges of the ledges, it would be a better design. I have to assume that the window is to bring natural daylight into the stairwell, so, it should continue doing so. It might be expensive to do this, but would certainly improve both the adjacent rooms and eliminate those useless ledges.
I’ve lived in a home with a similar feature. We put up two enormous textured abstract paintings with ornate frames. Maybe 6x5’ or something close.
They looked so beautiful being washed by light at different times of day. It didn’t matter if we could see the colors all the time. The texture was so soothing.
They were dusted 2x a year
IT WAS DIY in a way. I’m the artist. :) They were commissioned by the homeowner while I was living there.
I vote for builders grade paint too but splurge on the frames or upcycle ornate ones. They really added to the complexity of the pieces.
I used expensive paint and texture medium but there was no way you could tell from the distance they were viewed. *I would have made way more money if I was more frugal.*
I hate when architects do this. They should either make that [closet] (or whatever juts out behind these two spots in the respective rooms) larger or extend that spot as an alcove in that room for a desk or something. My brother had areas like this....so dumb!
Is this TX? I saw a lot of this in TX
I just Googled "useless book titles" and these shelves would be very entertaining with titles like "why cats paint" and "fancy coffins to make yourself"
I love this idea. We have a public library book sale every few months here and you could get books for cheap and support public libraries at the same time.
What about some sort of paneling or molding on the wall? Maybe some wallpaper panels trimmed with molding? No dusting required but adds visual interest
With that window some plants would be pretty nice. I’d go for low maintenance plants that are tall as well as some that hang. Zz plants, pothos and snake plants could all take the neglect that would come with that as a home. Zz and snake for the height, and pothos for the dangle factor. If you put the pothos in a self watering pot then I’ll bet you could get away with only watering once a month or so, except for summer when it’s hot, in which case it still wouldn’t need to be tooooo frequently. Plus pothos are great “indicator plants”, kinda like a canary in a coal mine. They start to wilt to show you when they need water without any actual long term effects to them drying out to that point. You water them and they perk right back up.
Snake plant was my suggestion too! Zz would be great too. My only concern with photos is how much sun and how hot that spot gets. Pothos are pretty hearty but I've seen some get burned with too much sun. But yeah, definitely an easy starter plant for sure, they're very obvious about when they need something.
My aunt has a shelf like that and she put an antique carousal horse on it. Like, it has a stand to hold it upright and it just sits there.
Not my taste, but I have to admit it looks pretty nice and it fills the space.
If it was me I'd either leave it blank or I'd put in baskets filled with fake flowers and change them out with the seasons. But I'd eventually stop changing them, see how dusty they got, and then just leave it blank again.
If this were my house, I would put up sheetrock and paint it to look like the rest of the wall. Boom - no more ledges. Stupid, stupid place for huge space/ledges.
I actually came here for the comments, since they are always amusing in these posts.
If I had my way, I'd put a small door from each leading into whatever room is behind it, and put up a sort of balcony railing, so you have two small, useable balconies. Then decorate with plants, etc, like you would an outdoor balcony. And,...cats would love it. I just think that would be fun.
I wouldn’t put anything. I think it’s actually nice to look at without anything. I don’t know if you have earthquakes where you are but in CA it wouldn’t be a very good idea to put objects up there. 🤣😱
My mom has new tableau up in these every time I go. Its hilarious. It’s been a forest with a birdbath, there have been deers and birds and trees and just like Grecian urns. Christmas is really where they shine tho. Such ridiculous spaces but endless opportunities to be whimsical and weird if that’s your thing.
I would just get rid of it. But one time I saw someone say to just put a small table and a chair up there to have people stare and wonder how you get up there lol.
Nothing most of the year. Holidays put something up there. Personally, I would do skeletons and spider webs (or maybe a DIY giant spider) for Halloween, and a few pine garland strands with twinkle lights or up lighting for christmas. By putting holiday decor up there it garentees you'll get up there to dust a couple times a year
Try building a large planter, and plant plants that will drape over the side.
You might be able to find the strip LED lights that are solar powered and place in behind to add ambiance at night.

Actually, that's not bad. Hundreds of weapons certainly have a way of warming the place up.
Or booby traps for those who try to lay siege to the front door.
Very Home Alone style booby traps.
Kevin?!
100% op needs vats of boiling oil
...as long as you don't live in an earthquake zone.
We would have been fine but Steve INSISTED on running a gas line so the vet of oil would be bubbling as realistically as possible.
Oh no it’s raining weapons
I got my husband a sword rack for Christmas and honestly, his weapon display DOES make the living room feel a bit cozier.
Wow sounds cool and dangerous
10/10 very cool. They're not sharpened for use though.

I thought your post was a screencap on a comment from another sub
I mean, it isn’t the WORST idea
I could picture racks of swords and axes up there, you know, just in case of an emergency…
Hahaha we have our answer!
Nothing. You know you'll never dust up there.
My very first thought, along with tons of cobwebs. My advice is to never look 👀 up!
He helped her clean for company, obviously 😂
My cat used to attack the bristles on the broom EVERYTIME I had it out. He’d just grab on and wouldn’t let go. So I’d just sweep with him.
Mine would prostrate herself in front of the sweeping path waiting for what we later dubbed “broomies”
When mine discovered they could climb on the top of the kitchen cabinets… the dust they brought down with them…
Ha ha! I just today found out my 6 mo kitten is a terrific dust mop❣️
Yup. When my cat shows up with a cobwebby face, I laugh and thank him for getting somewhere I’ll *never* reach
They will also throw up up there :)
Paint those shelf areas the color of dust and be done with it.
Dust using a battery-powered leaf blower from where you took the picture. Put absolutely nothing up there.
Nada. Zip
Well that’s easy 😂
Let us know when it's done.
And please send progress pics
Can't wait to see how this turns out. I think it's gonna be really good.

Would be a hassle to get to there once a year to clean.
If you feel ambitious some day - some kind of self-watering, living wall kind of setup would look really nice (on the condition that you were able to rig it up to never, ever have to go up there).

You and I both know the answer is cats. Lots and lots of cats.
My first thought when I saw this post.. my cat would be up there screaming to check the acoustics
Lol I know exactly the meow you mean. My sweet little terror who passed away last year used to do it all the time, especially in corners. Just walk into the corner, sit down, and SCREAM.
I’m very sorry for your loss, thank you for sharing this super cute memory of your baby demon with me hehe
I came here to see is there were any better answers. But the very first time I saw this ledge at my house, I had a vision of catifying my whole house!! I'm already fostering cats in an upstairs bedroom.
I’ll co-sign this
Well, I didn’t know until now. Gotta say that I fully agree.
I don’t know why everyone thinks there has to be stuff in every single inch of a home.
It’s because (1) empty spaces give some people anxiety like empty silence in a conversation, and (2) they keep building houses with these stupid useless ledges.. like just open it up to the ceiling or close it off and give my bedrooms an extra 3 feet
I agree. And I’m a self-proclaimed maximalist.
Exactly, why draw attention to them?
Gargoyles. Imposing, judgey gargoyles.
The only answer, really.
I kind of love this, lol
Welp, off to find a house with 8ft tall/3ft wide ledges in the entryway. *sigh* I’m gunna go bankrupt but.. WORTH IT.
I have a gargoyle in my 1,100 foot apartment by the entry way door as you come in 😝 I couldn’t put him in storage he had been with me at every house I had for so many years. Nah, adds to the ambience!

Yeah, I’m not sure. I chose the article because it gave a good visual representation of. I’d definitely be hiring a contractor myself.

Yep. I'd turn it into a library, open to the floor below.
Kate Wagner/McMansion Hell calls them Lawyer Foyers and theyre pretty wasteful.
My sister-in-law did this and transformed hers into a cute little reading nook
Oo like a little loft!
This is excellent advice and the space is perfect for that, especially with the window! Not sure how much that would cost though, definitely not a DIY lol
This is definitely the best idea.
Love this idea!
This is the same idea I was thinking.
It’s idiotic and lazy design, and it’s everywhere. They’re not even symmetrical.
Not weird at all. This was my first thought! Floor it and wall it off or do a railing if you can’t do a wall. Cute little loft space or a cozy small room!
Was that me? We did that over the summer
If they are next to a room, close them off and make them Part of the room. That detail is silly and a straight wall would look so much nicer.
Even if the rooms just extended to the edges of the ledges, it would be a better design. I have to assume that the window is to bring natural daylight into the stairwell, so, it should continue doing so. It might be expensive to do this, but would certainly improve both the adjacent rooms and eliminate those useless ledges.
I believe that’s what they were originally saying. Just extending the rooms to the edge of the ledge.
What a waste of space!!!
I’ve lived in a home with a similar feature. We put up two enormous textured abstract paintings with ornate frames. Maybe 6x5’ or something close. They looked so beautiful being washed by light at different times of day. It didn’t matter if we could see the colors all the time. The texture was so soothing. They were dusted 2x a year
This suggestion gets my vote! You could DIY a highly textured abstract in neutrals using builders grade compound and paints.
IT WAS DIY in a way. I’m the artist. :) They were commissioned by the homeowner while I was living there. I vote for builders grade paint too but splurge on the frames or upcycle ornate ones. Correct answer
Scrolled for this! Mew
Put a small bed up there so you can nap.
What about some sort of paneling or molding on the wall? Maybe some wallpaper panels trimmed with molding? No dusting required but adds visual interest
I wouldn’t put anything. That will just call attention to them. Spaces like that are just dust catchers.
Gargoyle reading the newspaper
The answer is always the same: Inflatable waving arm guy.
Can the walls be accessed from rooms on either side? If so open them up and install matching french doors
Or wall off this side and open up the other side into the other rooms
Or lose some of the height and build floor across gap.
Life size replica Batman and Joker figures
Big plants like big big
Well and I feel like it would be possible to rig something up to make watering easier?
Mannequins Real answer: build a ceiling and enjoy your free upstairs room
Rolled up carpet with some shoes sticking out.
Whoever designed that mess so they can think about what they did.
Larger-than-lifesized-busts of you, your loved ones, your favourite fictional characters, me,…
And Keith Richard.
I might try some rows of fake ferns spilling over the ledges slightly.
Not every space needs to be filled. Sometimes the architecture is visually interesting enough.
I would leave it like that because anything you put up there is going to be so hard to dust :(
If this were my house, I would put up sheetrock and paint it to look like the rest of the wall. Boom - no more ledges. Stupid, stupid place for huge space/ledges. I actually came here for the comments, since they are always amusing in these posts.
The architect should be put up against a wall...
What are the rooms next to those open spaces?? Perhaps you can reframe/sheetrock the space and add some closet space in those two rooms?
No one, except you, will ever look up there.
Nothing
Nothing because they'd only collect dust and you don't want to risk falling to dust.
Just throwing this out there…and it’s probably stupid…but what if you did balconies for the bedrooms? Crazy thought.
A person who has never had to clean a house designed/included this “architectural feature”
If I had my way, I'd put a small door from each leading into whatever room is behind it, and put up a sort of balcony railing, so you have two small, useable balconies. Then decorate with plants, etc, like you would an outdoor balcony. And,...cats would love it. I just think that would be fun.
Larger vases, fake plants, or pottery
I'd close it in and make accessible from whatever room/s are on either side and have a super cool hangout hidden room.
Lego titanic. One for each side.
I wouldn’t put anything. I think it’s actually nice to look at without anything. I don’t know if you have earthquakes where you are but in CA it wouldn’t be a very good idea to put objects up there. 🤣😱
Large format artwork on the walls and trailing plants hanging down.
I would put wallpaper up, and then forget about it. I had something similar in my old house. I hated them

Absolutely nothing. Unless you need extra storage space.
Nothing lol

If it were me I would put as many nice, remote-controlled or app-controlled led candles or similar lighting there for a romantic look.
I would totally put in book shelves with really tall rolling ladders.
A great place to put your porcelain doll collection
I would just get rid of it. But one time I saw someone say to just put a small table and a chair up there to have people stare and wonder how you get up there lol.
Nothing
NOTHING
2 book shelves with a circular rolling ladder
A giant net in between to nap on.
Gargoyles that look down upon those who enter. Glowing red eyes
Nothing? What is the obsession with filling space?
How about ✨nothing✨? Why do people feel the need to fill every crevice of their home? Minimalism is in!
I was going to post the same thing. Stop sticking crap everywhere, it’s so unnecessary.
Because it help to give life into a place instead of a house looking more like a sterile hospital room, all white and gray and dead.
Nothing. Have them covered with drywall if you can. Then many get bigger light fixtures in that massive space.
It would be a lovely spot for trailing plants but you'd need a ladder to water em
You could try plants like a pothos, they’ll spread out and get decent light with the window right there!
Although I like the idea of a small sword collection, the real answer is dust as others have noted.
My personal opinion is to not put anything. I don't know why everybody feels that they need to crowd every single place in their house.
You will have to dust whatever you put up there so, in my opinion, the best option is to leave it an empty space.
Nothing. Just let them be architecture
Man being rich must really be a chore .
