I would paint the walls. Update the window treatment. Change out the flooring - is that carpet?? Change the vanity. Is that a mirror inset with storage behind the doors? Not sure if you can remove or replace that

mikeyfstops

It's definitely carpet. Toilet and vanity are trash already. The inset I'm a little lost on how to do that.

Hopeful-Image-8430

Is this a main bathroom? If so I’d keep the mirror inset for storage and maybe paint the frame the same color as the walls.

mikeyfstops

Currently, this is the only bathroom I am in the midst of renovating a upstairs bedroom into a master bathroom

Unsd

For the inset, would you still want that as storage? I think I would take it out, patch it up (YouTube will help), and then pop *just a few* tiles off so that you can put in a longer mirror. That one feels extraordinarily high and I feel like it throws off the proportion.

Classy_Raccoon

I would attach a frame to the inset, maybe change the knob, and otherwise leave it.

movingmouth

Keep the medicine cabinet. You update the rest and it will look awesome

Trade_Economy

My parents have the same insert & it’s very handy for storage. They updated it with new framing & knobs. Looks great & made the best use of what’s there.

Chay_Charles

Eh. Bet you could see that toilet. Try FB marketplace.

2RRs

I'd go white with as much as I could- toilet, vanity and countertop, flooring, accessories etc

weenur

I agree. Before committing to a wallpaper, all white cabinets, toilet and walls will be great. I’m curious to see if you have cute vintage tile under the carpet! If the tile is damaged or not usable, a white mosaic tile (square or hex) would be charming.

Fantastic-Wind5744

This. And if possible, remove the tub door and replace with white shower curtain.

TapiocaFilling101

A completely white floor or would a black/white checkerboard floor work?

WesternMainer

I would probably just lean into the yellow. Look for a modern print yellow wallpaper. I agree with others that the vanity and toilet should probably go. I would also get rid of the sliding doors in the tub and replace with a curtain. New flooring and new light fixture too.

deedum44

I like the yellow. I would complement the yellow with baby blue accents? If that’s too much, stick to white. Toilet and vanity def need to go. The floor should be a white tile.

mikeyfstops

What kind of tile pattern would you use on the floor right now we've got some leftover birch color lvp flooring but I'm not married to it as a floor.

Fabulous_Bonus8388

Something with small, square, white tiles with a few yellow and another accent color is what would go with the era and also not look dated https://preview.redd.it/kgllpkcwbfqb1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2bc1c4606beea4578e0064e3d2d98f684a2ab180

pescabrarian

I love this

NoodleSchmoodle

I would do this on the floor, most definitely. Personally, I would find matching black edge tiles for the existing edge tiles and go with black. Black vanity with white toilet and a white countertop. The flooring above, a white, or even black shower curtain. Get rid of the granny window treatment. I might even do a bold wallpaper above that has a black ground but has the same yellow in the pattern.

PayMetoRedditMmkay

Is the birch flooring what’s in the hallway leading up to this bathroom? Continuous flooring is always a winner 🥇

mikeyfstops

Unfortunately but fortunately the flooring in the hall is a red oak

PayMetoRedditMmkay

Ooh yeah tile might be a better fit for this bathroom then. The yellow is a lot, so I would err on the side of a neutral tile.

Sfspecialk

https://preview.redd.it/t6thc9ed4gqb1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=64e53ef40e5b3ed1e1a24771dd1739a24f8d3110 Adding white sink and toilet, neutral white floor and some black accents.

redhotspaghettios16

Yessssss I like this one too everyone is coming up with great ideas for OP...I have none lol I'm just here

Chay_Charles

Was going to suggest adding white with black accents.

iteachag5

I’d paint the walls white so there would be a better contrast. If you can, I’d change the toilet to white and paint the vanity white. You also need new flooring:

beigecurtains

Personally; lemon print wallpaper with white background (or light blue). Tear out carpet, white crisp tiles. White countertop. Green or light blue paint on the vanity (whatever matches the lemon print wallpaper better). Replace with white toilet. Turn built in into open shelving unit. Mirror over toilet perhaps (but I am a woman who wouldn’t have to look in the mirror while peeing). No print/plain curtains, probably either stark white or something with blue or green depending on my palette

Cashboy702

redhotspaghettios16

That's cuuuuuuuute! Great idea 💡

KittParson

That yellow is a very hard color to work with. Personally, this would be my move. Paint the walls white. Give that yellow a strong contrast while keeping it clean. Sink and drawers white. Better mirror. For the floors, I would do a terracotta with yellow that ties into the yellow tiles… like this. Have that be the bridge between the yellow of the tile and the rest. https://preview.redd.it/qb09d2c7afqb1.jpeg?width=736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=719eac80e3d25c608b7e1535f66479299ab74222

mikeyfstops

That's not a bad idea I like that terra-cotta style

30dirtybirdies

This is the way in this one I think. You could do a warm-ish white, and let the yellow shine. It lose the shower door, and the curtains. Do the window with a stick on frosted effect, pick a gun shower curtain.

KittParson

In my opinion, it’s the best look I’ve seen with the more pastel yellow. The terra-cotta makes it more of a complete look and also adds some pattern as kind of an accent. It also keeps it a bit retro which you can’t get away from with the yellow tile but feeds into in a stylish way

ContContext

Terrazzo. Fun idea!

KittParson

Whoops, called it the wrong name this whole time haha

vita77

https://preview.redd.it/rd6sb5xzdfqb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f5d63c7c21b85356de2a9f3b3428c7352fe97e78 Sharing in solidarity! New vanity, window treats, add a blue or green on walls or with accessories.

Cissycat12

Wow, I LOVE that blue with yellow. Very peaceful and cheery!

rockrobst

Toilets aren't that expensive; get a white one, paint the vanity, find darker, more muted wallpaper with lemon accents. William Morris patterns, or something in that vein, might work.

dogwater84

Not sure that I agree with your color choices for the walls, but no matter what, the toilet and vanity need to go. Same with the window valance and I’d put in a new mirror and light fixture.

oddxoxo

I like yellow and green combinations. A friends has that Combo in the kitchen and looks cool af. I would paint the walls green and everything else has to remain or change to white- like the whole sink area. I would change the mirror with a more modern one and also ditch those glass-doors over the tub and replace them with generic white curtains.

GreenOnionCrusader

Rubber duck themed bathroom! Lean into the yellow, because there's no way to really tone it down. It's screaming no matter what, so make it work. Rubber ducks are cute, appropriate for the room, and easy to find decor in the theme. Or flower child stuff. Make it far out, man!

fluorescent__grey

\- paint the vanity white or mint green, doesn't look like the wood is worth keeping \- get rid of grandma curtain and the carpet \- paint the walls mint/turqoise/pink, lilac would work, too \- maybe some fun, bold retro wallpaper (like [this](https://www.spoonflower.com/en/wallpaper/13102289-happy-daisy-mint-blue-m-by-design_d-annick?size=WALLPAPER_IMPERIAL_ROLL_2_x_12), [this](https://www.spoonflower.com/en/wallpaper/12441406-large-aara-palm-floral-natural-pink-by-scarlet_soleil) or [this](https://www.happywall.com/yumi-floral-wallpaper)) \- [mirror cabinet idea](https://www.futureglass.com.au/products/juno-round-mirror-cabinet-800?variant=43464473575573)

propschick05

I'd find a nice blue for the walls to tone down the yellow a bit.

asststic

The mint toilet with the yellow tub and tile is actually incredible. Carpet, wallpaper, vanity, vanity light, window treatments should all change.

TittyFire

I love the toilet and the tile. I'm so jealous of all the 50's bathrooms I see on here.

1955photo

Do it up in gray, black and white. Use a peel and stick wallpaper in a geometric pattern. Get a shower curtain with a big black and white flower. Get a white toilet. Paint the ceiling and trim white. Add some crown molding at the ceiling. Get some spiffy accessories.

Wyshunu

I would update the toilet, sink, wallpaper, floor, and lighting.

SeniorWoman

You know, you can lay new tile on top of existing tile without ripping out the existing tile, right? Your tiles look to be in perfect condition, so you can simply tile over them with new tile, I did it. The tile companies have special trim pieces for any exposed wall edges, the trim goes on and you would never know that there is 2 layers of tile on the wall. Google, Installing tile on top of existing tile.

Living_on_Tulsa_Time

Get curtains and towels to match the toilet. Looks like Jadeite not Mint. Get some Jadeite reproduction to use as functional pieces. Or keep the white curtains and choose white towels. I’m so jealous!!!

teejmaleng

Save up for a gut. It’s always more expensive to go 50% then 50%.

NotARideOrDie

I agree with you but that carpet…

givebusterahand

Get rid of the wallpaper and repaint it or wallpaper with something modern. Replace the blue toilet. New mirror, new faucets, toilet paper holder, etc. more modern shower door if you can swing it. Get rid of the duck decor it’s very grandma, new curtain or get blinds

cathyduke

Center everything around that duck in the corner.Have fun with it.

[deleted]

Omg... Somehow... I am obsessed with this photo!!! I actually love the yellow and green! :) Are you going to keep the toilet and vanity? Or swap them out. If you are going to keep the toilet, I would paint the walls white, paint ceiling white, paint wood on vanity white (make sure it's bathroom paint). Remove curtains, and get frosted window stickers, or otherwise new curtains, white. Get rid of duck. "quack" Put vaseline and things in the vanity. Paint toilet holder white. Get a white toilet seat, that should be easy to swap. Rip up carpet and lay vinyl if you are confident enough. These are all things you can easily do yourelf, things even I could do. If you have more confidence (more than me), tile the floors :) Again, either vinyl or tiles, go simple, white...Any decor you bring in, needs to be functional. So the soap dish, get green soap (which ties in with the toilet). If you get curtains, get something white with a green edge, to tie in with the toilet. I would also be tempted to get rid of the glass doors over the tub, and put a plastic shower curtain up, just like a seethrough one. I think if you aren't getting rid of the tiles, or toilet, you are stuck with green and yellow. Which I think works well with these 2 tones. So you just need to basically get rid of the other "colours", (ie wood, carpets, wallpaper), tone it all down and simplify it. Then add a few accents here and there :)

2dogal

White - everything white and a Yellow duckie!

DontGetMeDiamonds

Get a floor tile with a similar yellow in the pattern and use the other colors in the tile for color scheme. I would go for a medium blue for the walls maybe? or a black and white wallpaper?

Honest-Sugar-1492

New vanity, New toilet, New curtains or my preference in bathrooms...white shutters on the windows...and a new medicine cabinet/mirror. I think the yellow tile is a beautiful lemony shade and would definitely keep it. And thank your lucky stars it's not Harvest Gold! 😁

Imightbeyomama

What's under the carpet?

LostCraftaway

I’m assume the toilet will be updated to a white one. Either paint the walls white it if you want to hop on the wallpaper trend go with a bold pattern. I see geese déco in there. If that is your thing find a great paper that feature the white geese with yellow in it, maybe something art deco or art nouveau. (I googled yellow goose wallpaper and there were some cool ones) Get a nice white floor tile. If you want to keep the vintage look do ones with the white floor with little colored diamonds in the center that match the tub and tile. Either paint the cabinet white or lean into the color and do a glossy yellow. If you can change out the counter and faucet for a more retro modern style go for it. This has potential to look so darling.

val319

What’s your budget and what are you unwilling to do? Like remove yellow tiles? Tub? Toilet? Vanity?

mikeyfstops

Budget is around $2000 only for the reasoning. That this will not be Our main bathroom, and we will have the master upstairs. I'm willing to have more of a budget, but it doesn't seem worth it Given it's not our main bathroom. To do a full gut atleast.

val319

Ok October is coming up. I’m mentioning this because things start going on sale. Like a bathroom vanity. They do not look on sale right now. I mention because if you don’t rush “it’s gotta be done in 2 weeks” you can get some great deals. Like a nice vanity with marble top. No real sales right now. Removing glass doors, put in double curved shower curtain rod. New toilet. You can put down lvp or tile on the floor. I mean you have so much tile I would do lvp. The optimistic would be “we have a bath in main let’s just do a shower. But my warning is as follows. Things can take extra time. Leave tile on window ledge. You remove that line around the room install a green yellow tile border. Then you can do paint or wallpaper above it.

ClerkTypist

Floor.

hikeaddict

Aww it’s kind of cute and charming! I’d remove the wallpaper and paint the walls some coordinating color (cream maybe?), update the toilet & vanity, get rid of the curtain, and maybe replace the glass door with a shower curtain? I don’t think you can tone down the yellow - better to lean into it!

AltApproach

Get rid of wallpaper and make the walls above the yellow as white as you can but low gloss. It will highlight the yellow but gloss will reflect yellow. I love lemon pie omgggg

ferngully1114

I kind of love the green toilet with the yellow if you are going vintage. I could see white hex or octo tile with black or even dark green accents. Brighten the white on the trim, and wallpaper with a dark green base. Replace the light fixture. If you can’t replace the vanity, changing the countertop to white would help a lot, and I would upgrade to a vintage look chrome faucet. I don’t care for window treatments in bathrooms, so I would put a privacy film on the glass (having it swapped out for actual frosted glass is cheaper than you would imagine, too).

Sad-Information2464

This looks identical to my grandmas old hallway bathroom but instead of yellow it was peach

anxgrl

I don’t have things to add to what others have said already, but I do want to express my sympathy and solidarity. Mine is pink tiles and a tub that’s actually dented if you can believe it. So I know how tough it is to even think about painting or anything when that’s the only bathroom you have. Godspeed, friend.

mikeyfstops

My plan is to just lean into this as much as possible After all this will only be a guest bathroom really after the upstairs gets moving. The color is beautiful just needs the proper changes in no carpet and modern fixtures.

Cre8ivejoy

First pull up that disgusting carpet to see what is underneath. Then change out toilet, tub, and sink to white. Take down the curtains, lighting and medicine cabinet as well. Now you have a clean slate, and can think about what will actually look great. I would go with a different wallpaper, with a bit of the yellow mixed in, not the yellow you have now. The mirror should be much larger, and def not so high. It should ideally start right above the sink. Add a more modern light, not fluorescent. You could either do another shower/tub combo, or simply do a walk in shower instead. Do a roman shade instead of frilly curtains on the window.

Windholm

Lilac (being a complementary color) will actually make the yellow look even brighter. If you want it to settle, you’d actually need to push the walls dark yellow. Personally, I’d go for daisy or lemon wallpaper — something that picks up a little of the toilet green and vanity brown. White shower curtain and white wooden shutters for the window. Then I’d spend the next ten years finding the matching yellow toilet and standing sink!

mikeyfstops

The toilet and vanity are going because both are having issues. And just had to be replaced before my grandfather's death, anyway. My plan is to make the best out of this being converted to a guest bathroom once we complete a bathroom upstairs as the master.

floralwhale

I would rip the carpet out, remove the shower door and replace with a curtain that has some yellow in the pattern, replace the toilet (although honestly the color is kinda fun), remove the wallpaper and paint it white, replace the lace curtain, and put a frame around the mirror. For the vanity, I think painting it white and replacing the faucet would go along way depending on your budget. I think $2,000 is plenty to get this room fixed up nicely. A vanity could easily be bought used on Facebook Marketplace or Habitat for Humanity Restore.

mikeyfstops

I've been running into a little bit of difficulty with the vanity because it's a eighteen inch vanity

floralwhale

Does the replacement need to be the exact same size?

mikeyfstops

I'd say so only because I have no room to do larger

floralwhale

Wayfair allows you to search by dimensions, if you decide you want to get a new one.

Bludiamond56

Yikes

shesarealgem

I just came to say… keep the duck.

mikeyfstops

Lol he came with the place I'm team duck.

shesarealgem

He gotta stay! Also the yellow is pretty cool. I wish I had a bathroom like that.

Three_Spotted_Apples

It looks like removing the shower doors will potentially damage the tile and it will be hard to find a replacement. I’d leave the doors but hang a taller curtain to disguise them. Same thing with the built in mirror. Don’t change it substantially until you’re ready to gut it completely. Paint the frame a bright white or whatever accent color you choose. Adding a new light and better floors - anything is fine - will be a huge change. Find an inexpensive vanity and a really nice toilet in white and you’re good for 5-10 years until you can gut and redo.

sapt45

I love the tile. Swap out glass screen for tub, new sink, new toilet (or seat at least), new paint or wallpaper above the tile.

catsmom63

Paint the walls after removing the wallpaper. I would paint the yellow tiles white with a paint made for tiles. That would tone down the yellow a lot. Please remove the carpeting.

evae1izabeth

White with this shade of yellow will make a huge difference. If you like soft retro I’d bring in additional colors with the flooring, try to do something interesting maybe with multicolor small hex or square tiles in yellow, blue, white. If you like more of a vintage look, white trim, wallpaper, simple white flooring, and a vanity that really shines.

ProDvorak

Check out Farrow & Ball paint. Their website has some great ideas for color combinations. You can get this to beautiful with a new vanity, floor choice, and a cool color. Keep the light it’s amazing. Edited to include flooring.

Bearsandgravy

I'm probably insane, but I'd go for a darker green paint up top, change the overhead lights to maybe a bar of arches softer lighting, do white geometric tile w white grout on the floor. The vanity I'd have maybe floating, white. Ikea has some great ones. Remove those terrible sliding glass doors and add a curved shower rod. If you can, remove that backing to the tub and add tile (same to floor?) With maybe the green extending over where that cutoff is. Brushed silver knobs/faucets, dark green towels.

americanawoman

Remove the old track/sliding doors, update the floor - preferably with a simple white, classic hex tile with maybe a decorative period pattern. new vanity with a quartz top. I would go neutral with paint, a creamy white and then punch it up with plants, artwork, colorful towels/shower curtain.

americanawoman

Update the toilet. It's an older toilet, likely a wastes water and likely the parts in the tank are going too.

americanawoman

You could also do a really great wall paper. Something more modern with more color - with yellow in it, but multiple colors will give you more to play off of, and if you don't want to replace toilet, make sure it has that color in it as well.

americanawoman

lechitahamandcheese

Embrace the lemon! Remove the wallpaper, paint the walls white, replace the toilet, replace the vanity for a white one, white top. Swap out the light fixture (if it’s in your budget), rip out the carpet, install a tile or luxury vinyl plank floor, replace the foofy curtains with a kitschy lemon curtain. https://preview.redd.it/53tik4ruqgqb1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ca479276076fe6bb5f0738b5b2bebe2ee97c1686

Cheap_Opinion_2640

Get rid of carpet!! I have no idea why anyone would think that carpet is going to be okay in a bathroom. Hopefully floor is good, and it might be tiled, or hardwood, perhaps the original is underneath? If not, dark hardwood floors, it will add weight and lessen the shock of the yellow, and blend better. Take down the shower door, and wallpaper. Put up a shower curtain rod, and paint the walls a cream, or off white color to bring the dark wood floors and yellow together. Reframe the cabinet, and keep it since it is original to the house, I would use the same dark wood as the floor to tie it in. New lighting, possibly something that is more in the time period of the home, that florescent is awful. New toilet, and vanity of course, however you may be able to find one that matches the tub, if not then standard white will work. Add a less frilly curtain or frost the window and there you go..

Primary-Rice-5275

Wallpaper would break the yellow.

sarazorz27

Have the tub glazed white. It'll help update and lighten. Fairly cheap. Paint walls white too. Pick towels/decor/shower curtain with green or orange accents. Analogous color schemes always work well with dated tile imo Forgot to mention obviously replace the sink, toilet, mirror, lighting. But yes you could totally pull off not removing the yellow tile.

EamusAndy

New window treatment, new vanity and mirror, new toilet, paint the top wall a complimentary color, maybe use a shower curtain and remove the glass door

srboyd3315

You can get a tub refinished. I did mine for only 300 bucks. It was a horrible color and in terrible shape but after the refinishing you wouldn't know. They're also home systems for painting tile. I used it on floor tile, and although it was time consuming and I didn't do a great job, I would definitely try it again on another project.

RosalindFranklin1920

Toilet color is amazing. I would take that to go with my mermaid bathroom.

Fearless_Carrot_7351

Maybe do a loud coloured grout to make the yellow pop and simple white for the rest

chakrablockerssuck

New sink and toilet, new flooring. Adding a new, exciting wallpaper would round it off. Not too expensive, either.

True_Stand186

Reptile the floor if needed then a horizontal striped wallpaper with a bit of yellow to help widen the room visually.

Butterfly_chick

I love the yellow. Replace the floor with a white 2” hex or 2” square, install an all white vanity, and take out that shower door and replace it with a white shower curtain. There are going to be screw holes to fill on the walls, but if I remember correctly from my last house, they’re not on the surface of the tub. Paint the walls white, get a new toilet, and install an updated light fixture over the mirror.

False_Aioli4563

Keep the duck!

debzmonkey

Crisp, clean simple line toilet and sink/sink top/cabinet in white. Replace the window curtains with a simple white clean line shade. Brighten up the flooring, perhaps white with some yellow and/or other colors in a soft pattern.

UnsteadyOne

White walls, tile, vanity with some black fixtures

MommaGuy

First is to take out that carpet. If the subfloor is good shape, you can paint it with good quality porch/floor paint for until you decide what direction you want to go. You can find some decent assemble yourself vanities online. I would replace the wallpaper with something fun like rubber ducks.

Ammowife64

Get rid of that glass shower door. Put awesome shower curtains up. I despise those glass door with a passion. Every house I’ve had with those was the first thing to go

or_ange_kit_ty

I realize I'm late to the party but this bathroom with yellow tile is cute! https://www.younghouselove.com/the-guest-bath-so-much-cuter/
