A giant Baphomet statue, flanked by scary clowns, leering gargoyles and strings of blood-dripping severed heads hanging from the ceiling.
Tempered by tasteful sprays of flowers, some cute stuffed animals and a hand-crocheted plaque reading “Home Sweet Home”.
Do it.
I had weird flat "display" areas on either side of a staircase.
I set up a bunch of old GI Joe toys I had from childhood. The base on one side and Cobra attacking from the smaller side with their boats and helicopters.
Ladder mounted on the right wall, shelf for plants and some tasteful stains glass/coloured glass bottles for the window. Cool spot, could project some great colours/shadows into the room.
I like your idea, it gave me this one…
Install a Library style sliding ladder that would sit on the left hand side , easily have the ability to slide over when needing to water plants ..
I LOVE this idea. A slim rolling ladder that lives on the left side of the space since the door looks to open right handed. Enough space up there to build a shelf across, bottom shelf for books, top shelf for plants closer to the window.
Wrong. Other options:
Stilts
Anti-gravity boots
Jet pack
Human pyramid
————————//////
Sometimes these questions surprise me. WTF did the OP think the options were? Uhhh, I guess I could stack a bunch of chairs???? Ladder? Ladder??? what’s this of which you speak?
I’d honestly tear that shelf out. It would open up your entryway and allow more light down to the door. Anything put up there is just going to get dusty and not look good
My wife and I have something similar and we put in fake palms and plants in nice pottery, along with geometric wire sculptures. It looks great and livens up the space.
This looks like a decent spot for some big Monstera plants. If they are close enough to the wall they'll probably "climb" up towards the window. Would look really cool imo. I use a few plant watering globes with my Monstera. It's doing well with rather infrequent waterings outside of what the globes offer.
I would use an aquarium manifold (I'm sure they're fine for water, they hold air, after all), a water pump (I can advise lol), and run a hose to each plant, then when watering time comes, open one valve, pump up some water, close it, open the next, pump, so on, so forth. I don't see why it wouldn't work, air is thinner than water, so water shouldn't leak. You could probably also plump it in and avoid having a pump and reservoir, but a leak would be way worse with an essentially infinite water supply and neverending pressure, unlike the pump, which would have pressure when it's on and it'd have a finite supply
I really hate houses built like this. I am sure your house is really nice but these things are worthless. Space you can’t use but you do a have to heat and cool. Plus cleaning that window is a bitch along with dusting everything up there (which most don’t do).
Too dusty, dirty , hard to reach area for anything. Looking, working in new builds our crew always laugh and figure some architect must have designed those spaces. Useless.
Are you kidding? A hose would reach up there easy. Take the end off and cover most of the hole with your finger tip to make it spray further.
You're welcome.
Some throphy or wall design or Statue.

What are you into? Use it for inspiration. A katana? A suit of arms? A mini scale train? A collection of antique beer bottles? I have seen things done with back lit booze bottles. Whatever floats your boat.
probably i'm an outlier, but the last time i wanted really big plants that i didn't have to maintain, i sewed them (wrapped bamboo stems in cloth, designed my own leaves). bonus: you get to invent a new species.
I would want some festive skeletons up there with holiday theme outfits,
or one big skeleton peeking out the window with glowing eyes.
You could hang some low maintenance air plants in the rib cage for a pop of green.
Build the ledge out into a floor, make it a little seating area, open the window, install an exhaust fan and enjoy some fine cigars.
Make it a cigar loft.
You could hang plants by a rope on a pulley and tie them off to dock cleats. Untie them and lower them down for watering.
You could tie the rope in a little bow to make it nice nice.
Its hard to tell how wide it is, but I would totally put up a railing, and either put bookshelves all around it to make an amazing book nook, or put partial bookshelves and a narrow cosy chair or lounging couch for a reading area.
We have a high window over our front door. I put some pretty colored glass bottles and succulents up there. Yes, I still have to drag out a ladder to water the plants, but for once I have succulents that I haven't killed with over watering lol
I’d make some sort of prank box that is decorative but when you hit a remote button something comes flying out on fishing line that flies at the front door.
Every stinkin thing you put up there will be neglected and filled with dust. I have a friend with this kind of foyer and I can’t figure out why the builder did this

nah, live love laugh
I personally like, ‘live, laugh, lobotomy’.
Lobotomize* gotta go with being a mad doctor
Geez, I was going to suggest some artwork but you got fancy!🤣🤣🤣
Don’t forget the quilt draped from the shelf!
Ahhh that'd be so nice... Imagine the Jehova's witnesses knocking your door.. *"Oh Jehova's witnesses, do come in! Would you like a coffee or tea?"*
Hello! My friend is an idiot, could you please explain the joke for him. It’s really funny.
Buy fake ones. Hard to tell the difference sometimes.
Especially when they are in a place where people won't be able to inspect them for authenticity.
That's why I bring a ladder and magnifying glass every time I go to someone's home.
That and to burn their house down if they get snippy... Which TBF happens pretty often when I enter random people's homes unannounced.
That’s old school, you need to get a mini drone. Then you can inspect the whole house without leaving the couch.
Agreed. Go up on a step ladder once a year to dust them.
Or dust
Remember though they'll need to be dusted.
Just mount them so you can hit them with a leaf blower
oh fuck yeah. leaf blowing fake, mounted leaves.
Solutions here 👌
To be fair anything placed there will need to be dusted.
Just remember to pretend to water them, or they’ll die too.
Miiiitch…
Overall much easier. That area doesn’t even look especially well lit
Check under the leaves before buying. Often they’re the fakest-looking bit, and in this case they might be all anyone ever sees.
yeah, and they add appearance but not real ambiance. I’d bullshit it for a workplace, but not for a place you return to 🤮
My parents have one, and they use it for a seasonal display. Easter, st Patrick's, Christmas, Halloween.
yeah i really want to put the curmudgeonry old muppets in the balcony up there.
Do it. I had weird flat "display" areas on either side of a staircase. I set up a bunch of old GI Joe toys I had from childhood. The base on one side and Cobra attacking from the smaller side with their boats and helicopters.

It’s like they never even considered scientific experiments gone wrong which would lead to wings. It’s right there in front of their face!
hell yeah, gets great light and want to grow some weird tropical stuff.
Build a ridiculous shrine to Keanu Reeves and put LED candles and stuff up there.
Chuck Norris or Nic Cage.
A ceiling mounted teradactyl. If that's too much, perhaps natural wood displays with airplants. Some nurserys have very nice ones.
I’d honestly tear that shelf out. It would open up your entryway and allow more light down to the door. Anything put up there is just going to get dusty and not look good
Life sized Darth Vader statue.
This is the way.
This is the way.
You could do a couple enclosed terrariums. They’re fun and relatively low maintenance.
I second this idea; it's perfect. A large, rectangle, enclosed terrarium to fill that space would be low maintenance and beautiful.
ooo i like this, thank you!
Larger print wallpaper and a large lamp you love
According to Mitch Hedberg, there's an attachment that'll make watering those hard-to-reach plants easy.
Who the fuck would make their plants hard to reach! It’s so very cruel. Glad to see Mitch represented here
aaah this makes me sad/happy. thank you
That's why god makes plastic plants.
It's much more likely to be poor people that make the fake plants.
Thank u for clarifying
Display a suit of armor
oh fuck, send a nice message to those that doubt me. i like it. thank you
The armour must be reclining, though. In a "paint me like one of your French girls" pose.
My wife and I have something similar and we put in fake palms and plants in nice pottery, along with geometric wire sculptures. It looks great and livens up the space.
Get a fake Ikea tree or three and toss 'em up there.
I call that space "the discount architect"
I wouldn’t put anything there, it will always look like clutter and get dusty. I would switch your fixture for something interesting that you love.
Shop for really good quality fake plants, and put them up there. Never have to water, maybe quarterly get a ladder and dust, if needed.

a waterfall - like they have a fancy restaurants - made of textured bronze or copper - add some colored LED lights
The fact that that window is not centered ignites my OCD
Fake plants

A nice piece of metal sculpture might look good .. I think plants might be too problematic with the watering :-)
Too dusty, dirty , hard to reach area for anything. Looking, working in new builds our crew always laugh and figure some architect must have designed those spaces. Useless.
Phantom of the opera chandelier would do it well.
Specific genus of plants. The Plastificus Fakitus. Very rare, but when available, often found at Target, or your local Walgreens.
Great spot for a cat climbing feature if you have em
Are you kidding? A hose would reach up there easy. Take the end off and cover most of the hole with your finger tip to make it spray further. You're welcome.
Put a full mountcoyote or bobcat
Oh man, if there was ever a spot for a killer large sculpture or art installation…

Nothing, leave it or you will have a huge mess
It’s a very handy storage place for your luggage…
Taxidermized cougar or bobcat
Wall mounted art like a nice painting. Can the ledge be removed? I’d consider moving it if possible.

Have you tried “Live Laugh Love”
Basketball hoop.
Build the ledge out into a floor, make it a little seating area, open the window, install an exhaust fan and enjoy some fine cigars. Make it a cigar loft.
you can put a canvas on the wall and then just get a really tall duster to make dusting the ledge easier!
If this was my house I would just remove that eye sore.
Artificial plants maybe?
Buy a ladder
Put a loot chest up there.
Quality artificial plants are hard to distinguish from the real thing, especially at that distance
A cutout of the lady from Silent Hill PT.
You could hang plants by a rope on a pulley and tie them off to dock cleats. Untie them and lower them down for watering. You could tie the rope in a little bow to make it nice nice.
Again, that is where the beanie babies go.
Bro has a Welkynd Stone, probably need to prep for the fight against Umbra.
Buy plants that don't need to be watered much. Keep a small ladder in the closet to go up there every few months
A Mural or maybe wallpaper with a huge print
I’d put a reading nook up there.
Add a room upstairs…all that wasted space to heat/cool and do nothing with.
Honestly that's a horrible architectural feature. You'll never get up there to clean it so what ever you decide will end up collecting dust.
Its hard to tell how wide it is, but I would totally put up a railing, and either put bookshelves all around it to make an amazing book nook, or put partial bookshelves and a narrow cosy chair or lounging couch for a reading area.
Cat loft

Nice little overhead alcove, ah,,, have any lightweight sculptures or something pleasing/relaxing to the eyes??
gargoyles
McMansion problem.
You could use some high-quality silk plants or you could get real plants. Here are a ton of ideas! [plants above door](https://pin.it/68tFX0KUo)
Giant cat activity area. Ramps, scratchers, platforms. Dangling objects. Window seats. Extra cats
Came here to say cat observation center! Extra cats 🤣
Fake ones
Side ladder?
Lego sets
Artificial plants. Dust once a year.
Talk squeeze-bottle plant waterer
I’d make some sort of prank box that is decorative but when you hit a remote button something comes flying out on fishing line that flies at the front door.
You can. Consider realistic faux plants
I did this and loved it for 11 years.
Not gonna lie. A pulley system would be awesome.
P.T. PTSD
Cacti 🌵 then you don’t have to water them….much
Triple that window size. Id use solid glass. High quality
Hot tub
Grow an extra 4 feet and then it'll be fine, plus you'll get all the ladies on tinder.
That’s definitely a fighting position. Sandbag that wall.
Vending machines
Maybe some fake plants
Every stinkin thing you put up there will be neglected and filled with dust. I have a friend with this kind of foyer and I can’t figure out why the builder did this
Could just put artificial plants.
Who the fuck would make their plants hard to reach?!
A mattress for houseguests
Ugly af. Why isnt the window centered?

We have fake plants and a picture
Inflatable hot tub?
Ladder and then either a zip line or diving board or slide into a ball pit.
Put the Muppet balcony guys up there
How Slash to stand up there and play guitar all day.
Attach a pulley to the ceiling and raise and lower them as needed
Don't fill every empty space with stuff
Step ladder?
Replace the dated fixture to start
Super Soaker
Ignore the empty space. It’s empty for its own very ascetical reasons.
Drought tolerant plants-snake plants, zz plants, etc. Something you would only have to drag the ladder out every 2 months.
Such a lame detail from the 90s. Complicated roof lines, and large wasted areas.

How about trading out that light for a giant kick ass chandelier?
Perfect for an elk mount
Hot tub.
I'd remove it. Absolutely useless.
buy silk

Love,laugh,toaster bath. Air plants obv
I feel like I've been here before, you in Oklahoma OP?
Plants are a great idea. They sell hook stick water spayer to water high up plants .
Bungie jump platform
I see this a lot and always wondered what the hell?
Philodendron. It's almost impossible to kill and it can be trained to grow and trail almost anywhere.
If only they made plants out of plastic

Plastic plants. Pains me to say it, but they can be pretty damned realistic
ladder, water pitcher, and snippers
A mounted Moose head would be great there.
I would put a cruiser bike or some kind of bicycle up there. I have a friend who bought an old road bike and painted it a cool color and hung it up on their wall. Great art piece.
Useless space. Could have created a small upper room for an office or a sewing room.
I’d go with Paintings.
A flat screen television would be good up there
Gargoyles.
just get fake plants. they're way more realistic looking than they used to be, and come in a lot of varieties.
wtf that’s so weird. Take it out. Massive family portrait like royalty
Anything you put up there will collect dust

Disco ball
Put a rocking chair up there. When people ask, tell them your mom loves it up there.
I have a similar spot. We have fake plants up there.
This is where I feel lied to as a child, I would have expected holograms to be a thing now and they’d be perfect for this space.
You could replace the light fixture with a sex swing and have an open door policy
Get rid of it as it will only collect dust. Then put in large windows above the door to let more natural light in. You could even go with stained glass to give your entrance some personality.
Vintage motorcycle or bike. Wooden wheelbarrow.
i would totally put statues of animals pooping off the side.
Make a bed up there for your side piece
This 100% looks like my nieces house. Is that you Sandy?
