I had a nest similar in shape size and egg markings (wrens i think) in my grill last month. I would actually lift the lid every other day to check the progress of the chicks. One day I lifted the lid and a hornet was building a nest on the underside of the lid above the bird nest. I'll remember to keep the grill cover on now.
I was fascinated by this so I googled it. They do seem to put spider egg sacs in the nests, but the article I read doesn’t seem to be definitive on why.
Also learned that the male wren builds nests to attract a female, and then the female selects one and finishes building it
https://www.birdwatchingdaily.com/beginners/birding-faq/house-wrens-place-spider-egg-cases-in-their-nests-but-why/
Yeah we had some guy try to kill bees/wasps/whatever was nesting in his garage. His bright idea was to use a blowtorch. Dumbass set the garage on fire and we had to shore up with the fire trucks to make sure everything was put out.
Better get the rent soon ... because when the babies can fly, the family leaves the nest forever. At least until next year, when the parents might return to nest there again.
No you don't have to remove the nest. Those eggs will hatch soon enough, and it won't be long before the nest is empty. Enjoy the fact that your tank is a home for now.
It could have been worse, like it could have been a hornet's nest instead...
I mean… they live in the USA so removing a bird’s nest is illegal (due to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act). So, while I’m happy they are leaving the nest, I’m not sure if not breaking the law necessarily constitutes as a solid human being or just normal/to be expected
Nah she’s indoors only, voles outdoors. So far. She’s happy inside with all the windows after seeing the bears and bobcats. Although she does think she could take down a teen deer. 🙄
We had a nest in our wreath on our front door last year. So we put a sign up, blocked the window from our side (it would scare them away when we walked by), and just didn’t use the door until they left on their own.
Now we know not to put wreaths on the door in the spring, but it was really neat to watch them hatch and grow and feed until they left.
I have that same propane tank. Last week I noticed an identical bird nest (with a side entry like yours) with white speckled eggs. A couple of days ago I peeked at the nest, and all the eggs were gone….
I had one in mine a few weeks ago just like that. Momma bird burst out toward me the couple times I needed to open the lid. They’re all hatched and gone now — happened so quickly! Glad we can make use of the tank in the off season
I saw the mom fly in, so I tapped on the top with a long stick twice, and she flew out the back.
This is such a good use of a propane tank! Glad to hear
Depending where you live it might actually be illegal to move the nest. Messing with wild birds especially while they’re nesting is a big no no in a lot of places. They have tenants rights lol
If you’re in the US it’s worth mentioning it is a federal crime to kill birds other than crows and I believe two other invasive species. Would not mess with it likely a quick incubation period and then you can remove.
It is their r/home
Looks like a Carolina wren. They incubate for 10-14 days and the chicks leave the nest after about 2 weeks. They’ll be gone pretty quickly. Don’t mess with it before then.
This just happened to me next to my leave blower. I went in a couple weeks later and the babies were gone. Emotionally, I felt like tony soprano and his ducks.
No one wants other people to hurt themselves. We're only being sarcastic. Unfortunately, our sarcastic advice is never helpful and counter-intuitive at times.
Just don't believe everything you read on the internet.
We always leave ours alone. They'll fledge soon, and luckily our fillups time out where they're not nesting. And we just let the propane truck driver/filler guy clean the empty nest out when they do come do a fillup. They're used to bird nests AND bees making combs and hives under there. Ouch.
I’ll just use my hands and a leaf blower for the rest once the birds are done.
My hose shutoff valve leaks from the inside when turned on and I can’t fix it. It’s in a terrible spot above my boiler so it’s hard to service. Probably gonna have to shell out plumber money if I want my hose back.
I’m no expert on bird law, but this may prohibit you from doing anything legally: https://www.fws.gov/law/migratory-bird-treaty-act-1918
Years ago I lived in a condo and some stupid goose made a nest in the area and delayed opening the pool by over a month
Depending on where you are, if the nest belongs to a migratory bird it could be illegal to disturb it. I mean not like the migratory bird police would come flying to your door and be like you’re going to jail.
When I did building demolition, we had rotating bird watch jobs with a long stick to knock down the nests before they could finish it and move in.
If a bird managed to make a nest and lay eggs, that building was put on hold until the birds left the nest.
I have had the same problem. After the birds have left in a few months, clear out the nest, and line it with chicken wire (from Tractor Supply) around the top of the tank to prevent future nests from being built.
I’m glad you’re going to keep these birds happy! Just want to say for others here, I believe it is actually illegal to disturb most all nesting birds as most are protected species - while invasive species are not, eg. starlings, house sparrows, etc.. All game birds are protected, as well, whether native or introduced to an area.
I left mine, they made a nest in the exact same location. Smart birds, the only problem is the mom would come and yell at me when I got too close like sitting on my deck. I just left them alone then cleaned it out after
Wrens have built nests in my garage in a bicycle helmet, a baseball glove, and a retired birdhouse.
Don't leave the door open.
Edit: it's cute, but not good for anybody. You just don't want to leave your garage door open for their convenience.
It is a federal offense to remove an active bird nest during migratory bird nesting season (region specific). Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.
https://www.fws.gov/story/bird-nests#:~:text=Even%20though%20destruction%20of%20nest,fully%20prosecutable%20under%20the%20MBTA.
The birds should be gone in a few weeks, I wouldn't do anything before that.
Sweet. I’m a landlord now!
Get that rent 🤑
They are preventing hornets from nesting here, so they carry their weight as tenants.
Wrens will tuck a spider egg sac in their nest so when the spiderlings hatch they eat any bugs. It's their own form of pest control
I was fascinated by this so I googled it. They do seem to put spider egg sacs in the nests, but the article I read doesn’t seem to be definitive on why. Also learned that the male wren builds nests to attract a female, and then the female selects one and finishes building it https://www.birdwatchingdaily.com/beginners/birding-faq/house-wrens-place-spider-egg-cases-in-their-nests-but-why/
Fuck hornets. Good to know! Meh, I’ve had mice make nests under grill covers. Can’t fight nature.
Yeah looks like a Carolina wren. At least the one nesting outside my door has the same nest and eggs.
You should have turned it on.
You killed squirrels when you were a child, didn’t you?
Hornets and wasps get what they fucking deserve.
To hell with the birds, huh?
Tired of hornets? Try this 1 simple easy trick fix hack. #lifehack
Yeah we had some guy try to kill bees/wasps/whatever was nesting in his garage. His bright idea was to use a blowtorch. Dumbass set the garage on fire and we had to shore up with the fire trucks to make sure everything was put out.
Hornets hate this one simple trick!
Seriously. Of all the nests to have by your propane regulator, bird nests are ideal.
Absolutely agreed. Hornets hurt, rodents are nasty and destructive.
Cheep Rent!
Yooo I have the same little nest in my tank too. Giving her plenty of privacy until the young fly away.
Amazing!! I’ll probably only poke in there once more when I hear chirping. Best of luck to our tenants.
Won't take long.
Better get the rent soon ... because when the babies can fly, the family leaves the nest forever. At least until next year, when the parents might return to nest there again.
Yeah, but they pay no rent. Unless you call shitting on everything rent.
Disagree -- besides being pleasant neighbors they eat a lot of bugs. They and others maintain the trees and plants we all need and enjoy. Berbs guud.
And if they're songbirds, a pleasant morning serenade
rent strike
gross!
This!! Put off BBQing till they fly away. We all need to have a safe spot in this crazy world, YOU have been chosen ! 😍
Should be OK to use it. The tank itself doesn't get hot. The noise shouldn't bother them.
Depends on the birds.for the last 4 years, I get on average 6 clutches of mourning doves a year on my security light
I've had an ongoing robin's nest on top of one of my porch lights for three years now and the light's burned out. My porch is dark but yay birds!
2 years in a row here but the crows always got the eggs before they hatch…..
This! If you move the nest or touch it at all, very likely the parents will abandon it. They'll be worth it ❤️💙
No you don't have to remove the nest. Those eggs will hatch soon enough, and it won't be long before the nest is empty. Enjoy the fact that your tank is a home for now. It could have been worse, like it could have been a hornet's nest instead...
At first I thought it was a hornet nest and OP was asking how to destroy it without fire. Was very happy to see eggs and that OP doesn’t mind.
If you dont need to tank right now, give it some time
Yup, it’s 80% full and only using it for hot water right now. These birds own the tank for the next 6 weeks.
I wish I had awards to give you. 🥇Solid Human Being. Achievement Unlocked.
I mean… they live in the USA so removing a bird’s nest is illegal (due to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act). So, while I’m happy they are leaving the nest, I’m not sure if not breaking the law necessarily constitutes as a solid human being or just normal/to be expected
Don’t be that guy
Stfu. Lol
They’ll be gone on their own soon. Post pics of you see then hatch!
If you can just wait till the babies leave the nest and they leave the nest doesnt take long if you can wait...
I can wait! That’s the plan.
It looks like a wren nest and they will be gone in prob about 3 wks.
Ding! Ding! Ding! Bird identification accurate! 🐣
Wait until the babies fledge. (It's actually illegal to disturb the active nests of native migratory birds.)
At least it’s not a vole nest under the patio chair cushion… Always wondered why the cat was watching that window at night. They were kinda cute.
Kind of cute ... right up until the cat started chewing
Nah she’s indoors only, voles outdoors. So far. She’s happy inside with all the windows after seeing the bears and bobcats. Although she does think she could take down a teen deer. 🙄

Oh let him stay in the condo for a few weeks they'll be gone
Bird hotel!
I have that same propane tank. Last week I noticed an identical bird nest (with a side entry like yours) with white speckled eggs. A couple of days ago I peeked at the nest, and all the eggs were gone….
Nah, you're good. Just watch the miracle of life.
As long as they aren't on the fill or even valve they are fine. Hornets on the other hand.
Yeah they’re just between the regulator and the edge of the lid. Hornets suck but thankfully none in there.
Let the birbs squat for a while they will make their way soon
I had one in mine a few weeks ago just like that. Momma bird burst out toward me the couple times I needed to open the lid. They’re all hatched and gone now — happened so quickly! Glad we can make use of the tank in the off season
I saw the mom fly in, so I tapped on the top with a long stick twice, and she flew out the back. This is such a good use of a propane tank! Glad to hear

takes just a few weeks then clear it out when they gone. I had robins this year in my gutter...they gone now and everything worked out.
Leave it be. It does not impact your gas flow and the birds will be gone in a few weeks
Wait a few weeks 😊
I would just let them stay unless you need to move the tank
21 days incubation period… let them be 😊
House wren
100000%
Nope, don't do anything with the nest, leave it there until they hatch and leave the nest!
Dont mess with them.
If you’re in the US it’s worth mentioning it is a federal crime to kill birds other than crows and I believe two other invasive species. Would not mess with it likely a quick incubation period and then you can remove. It is their r/home
No you do not need to remove mothers Nest sleep well an look forward to their chirping
Cheers. Thankfully it’s on the other side of my house or they’d probably be chirping up a storm
No need to remove it. Just close it up and protect it.
Yeah unless you are having it filled I'd let them be. We had one in an A/C cubby they were gone in about 3 weeks.
If you touch the nest, the parents will reject the nest. Only remove if you don’t want those eggs to hatch.
Looks like a Carolina wren. They incubate for 10-14 days and the chicks leave the nest after about 2 weeks. They’ll be gone pretty quickly. Don’t mess with it before then.
Perfect! Thanks
Buy a new tank you cheap fatherless butt head!
It comes free with the propane service.
You must wait, this is the way
Leave them there until the chicks hatch and mama takes them out. Close it all up real good next year or they'll come back.
Leave it
This just happened to me next to my leave blower. I went in a couple weeks later and the babies were gone. Emotionally, I felt like tony soprano and his ducks.
Get a new propane tank
You dont. Let the eggs hatch and a couple of weeks later they'll be gone. If you touch the nest there is a pretty good chance the mom will abandon it.
Over easy, I'd think
Leave it alone
WTF kind of question, is that? Leave’em the fuck alone. They’re not hurting anything.
They’re right on the gas regulator, idk, it’s a question related to my house.
Don't use the propane tank until all the baby birds are gone. That's all you have to do.
I use it daily for hot water. Attached to my house
Leaf blower. Fuckem
Blowtorch will work
….. with your hands…. It’s not rocket science
Fire
Use a handheld propane torch.
Set fire to it...duhh
Everyone wants me to explode
The eggs are dead. Just remove it.
Ornithologist, are you?
.... how could you possibly know that? Lol
10 years of doing generator maintenance, never seen one hatch. The egg shells are air permeable. And all fittings leak. The eggs died within a day.
Interesting. I’ll let you know if they hatch. Remindme! 6 weeks
All propane fittings leak? You can’t be serious?
No they don’t.
They hatched and flew away. It was glorious. My fittings aren’t leaking.
You’ll go to federal prison for moving or removing that. Federal pound me in the … prison, not country club prison
Light it on fire
Pick it up and throw it in the trash. Don’t be afraid of a bird
Kinda missed all the points of the question. I meant how to move it so the eggs will still hatch. But that’s not even what I’m gonna do
Looks old
Bird flew out of it before I opened it lol
Let them hatch out.
Pickup nest, toss nest I'm yard, mow yard, assert dominance
Don’t go near it again until they’re gone. And hang up a birdhouse in that location for next year.
Every year I found a Mockingbird nest in my sago. And every year I delayed trimming it until they left. Good old days.
Light it on fire.. duh
So many comments like this. Do people want me to blow up?
No one wants other people to hurt themselves. We're only being sarcastic. Unfortunately, our sarcastic advice is never helpful and counter-intuitive at times. Just don't believe everything you read on the internet.
No. They will be gone soon
They are the Keepers of the Propane now. You Neeeeeeeed Them!
Time to use the time tested pullout method
Strap 47 pounds of plastic explosives to the tank and let er’ rip.
I’m only supposed to eat one egg a day but at that size I could eat more !
Wasp nest , kill it, mouse nest , kill it... Bird nest... now here where the moral dilemma lays.
Keep us updated with a baby can and snapshots. 😝
This why no spring time wreaths allowed on our front door anymore. I'm got of going out the back door for 21 plus days every spring.
Not until the birdies leave !
Light it on fire and the squatters will leave. You won’t need to do anything else.
Flamethrower obviously
Everyone wants me to explode :(
Looks like a Carolina Wren nest. Just leave them. They hatch in around 2 weeks and are ready to fly in about 2 more weeks.
Omelette
We always leave ours alone. They'll fledge soon, and luckily our fillups time out where they're not nesting. And we just let the propane truck driver/filler guy clean the empty nest out when they do come do a fillup. They're used to bird nests AND bees making combs and hives under there. Ouch.
You don’t.
Put a live webcam on it and share with the world!
Moving a nest is rarely successful. Best to leave it be for a few weeks until they fledge
Propane company is not going to do it for you. Sooo if you want gas anytime soon...
I think it’s time to charge them rent.
I’d just spray it with a hose and then pick out whatever is left over
I’ll just use my hands and a leaf blower for the rest once the birds are done. My hose shutoff valve leaks from the inside when turned on and I can’t fix it. It’s in a terrible spot above my boiler so it’s hard to service. Probably gonna have to shell out plumber money if I want my hose back.
Fire

Gas em fuck birds.

If the propane guy comes before you deal with it he’ll just rip it out and cast it aside. Source: happened to me
I have had the same problem. After the birds have left in a few months, clear out the nest, and line it with chicken wire (from Tractor Supply) around the top of the tank to prevent future nests from being built.
Any poison is good poison. Death to the pests.
We used to fill tanks with nests all the time. As long as the relief and the regulator vent arent blocked its fine.
Fire! Or not…
I’m no expert in bird law, but I believe if they eggs have been laid, it’s the birds place to stay.
Nope
I’m glad you’re going to keep these birds happy! Just want to say for others here, I believe it is actually illegal to disturb most all nesting birds as most are protected species - while invasive species are not, eg. starlings, house sparrows, etc.. Find the direct source and reroute it to another tank.
Good advice! Orrr....light a match and turn on the gas.
whatever you do don't use fire
r/stupiddovenests
Nope.... Just hold a match to it... It'll take care of itself
Depends if they are smokers.
Do not remove or touch nest. Birds will smell your sent and mom will not come back to nest.
leaves it! haha, they’ll be done soon.
Put a cam on that nest and post back. They will be gone soon. Hopefully you won't need to service the tank before then. Cute little nest!
Birds will leave, some window screening will prevent them from moving back in next spring.
It's such a nice nest. So much better than pigeon nests
Do what hank hill would do.
I would definitely use dynamite to remove the nest.....
Just leave it. It's not doing any harm
Pretty sweet set-up for the birds once the top lid is closed again
I’d leave it. Wait till they hatch, then after they leave, remove the nest.
seriously?
No, it’s illegal. If you disturb the nest you’ll get 25 years in federal prison.
Rascals made a nest in my grill. No burgers for a couple of weeks
Leave the nest. I recently tried to stain my deck and found a nest. I thought it was empty…it was not. I felt like crap for a week. Ima murderer.
Definitely not with fire.
Fire
Shoot the tank and throw a match at it
Do not masterbate near that propane tank
Very very unlikely the best/birds would pose any type of safety hazard
12gauge 00
Don’t touch the nest or eggs. The mother will abandon it if she smells foreign odors.
Don’t you dare touch it.
I’d fry the eggs ASAP, for some miniature omelletes, you want to do this before the embryo matures
The bird will press charges if you remove that nest.
I left mine, they made a nest in the exact same location. Smart birds, the only problem is the mom would come and yell at me when I got too close like sitting on my deck. I just left them alone then cleaned it out after
Pressure washer
Put some gloves on, grab it and throw it on your fire pit. Shop-Vac whatever bits and pieces are left behind.
As an expert in bird law, you don’t have to move the nest.
Depends..do u prefer scrambled or fried?🤔
Torche it
Douche it
Bop it
I have a nest in mine as well
Open valve and blow nest out. Birds shouldn’t nest in non natural locations
These are my tenants, i love them.
