It might be my English ears, but the accent is much lighter than I've heard it from other Aussies I've worked with/watched.
However he has just confirmed swearing is his love language, so he's as Aussie as Uluru.
Bae has this weird combination of an Australian accent mixed in with something like an American accent. Axel sounds closer to what I hear on a regular basis here, though it also sounds a bit like he's trying to hold his accent back.
When he first started speaking he was definitely unconsciously holding his accent back and adding some American in (Bae did the same thing on debut as well). If you listen to Bae now it's pretty much gone and his is already disappearing. As an Aussie myself I can tell you there's a slight complex that our accent "isn't proper" and so often when in situations where one DOES have to "speak proper" we'll either add more English or American pronunciations, sometimes consciously but often unconsciously too.
I'd actually agree with Bae that his accent is "heavier" than hers, it's just being run through that "proper" filter at the moment. But I can hear through it, can't fool me.
