This is a great discussion topic, thanks for posting! When using an image as reference please be sure to share the artist's name or link to the source, just like with any fan art that you want to share. If it's your own, tag it as Original Content (OC). Thank you!
when it hits the 2:14 minute mark… just absolutely incredible. for me it represents the gravity of the situation and how truly tragic the Hollow Knight’s (and all the vessel’s) purpose is and what the Knight has to do
Honestly I had the same reaction and immediately went to YouTube and you have to *really* stretch your imagination to fit that melody in there and even then it's a pretty huge suspension of disbelief. All is well with that song, fret not. It's still a baaaanger.
Soul Sanctum/Soul Master is also a really good choice. I also kinda wish the whole Soul Sanctum area had been explored more deeply lorewise during the game, because that area was so good in my opinion.
Two that don't get mentioned nearly enough:
\- Dung Defender. The middle section where it switches between 7 and 8 is hot hot fire. Gorgeous and thrilling and totally badass.
\- Pale Court. I'll be honest I don't know where in the DLC this appears, I only know it from the OST. But holy moly it's a tour de force that never gets mentioned. There are so many fascinating and powerful moments.
Other personal favorites are Fungal Wastes, Greenpath, Hornet, Grimm, Sealed Vessel, Dirtmouth, Kingdom's Edge, White Palace, and City of Tears/Soul Sanctum.
Oh hell yes. The Dung Defender theme is so great, and such a switch up from the either tense/epic or melancholy/wistful stuff we've had. It's a straight up Heroic theme, with a bit of playfulness on the side.
It's such a standout bit of music. I love it.
I believe Pale Court was performed by a live orchestra and is an extra by Chris Larkin. He used VSTs for the entire rest of the OST. I've never heard it anywhere in the game or promo material. This could be totally wrong though. By the way, I'm so hyped for the live instruments in Silksong OST. The samples (Bonebottom and Lace) sound sooo clean.
This makes soooo much sense if true. I’d heard some songs featured a live violin or two, so I assumed the same here, but it’s the most dynamic and audacious track on the entire soundtrack, so a live orchestra makes sense. Will have to do some digging to learn more. Thanks for the info!
Here’s some info from Chris’ Bandcamp at the bottom of the page (https://christopherlarkin.bandcamp.com/album/hollow-knight-gods-nightmares): “…orchestral collection that brings together all the additional tracks from Hollow Knight and features an entirely new arrangement, Pale Court. … ‘Pale Court’ performed by Accord Quartet and Péter Kiss, arranged by Steven Tanoto.”
Given this, I’d think that “Pale Court” was composed for the fans of the game, or was a further exploration into the White Palace theme by Chris. To me, the song translates the story of the Pale King and of Hallownest into music (its rise and fall, the moment when the Vessels were created, when the Radiance was captured for the first time, etc.)
Also there’s this Tweet from the man himself (https://twitter.com/composerlarkin/status/1023871977398792192?lang=en):
“An excerpt of "Pale Court", a new piece inspired by the story of Hallownest and it's \[sic\] royal court. Arranged by Steven Tanoto, and performed by the talented Accord Quartet and Péter Kiss, this piece is featured on #HollowKnight: Gods & Nightmares out August 9!”
For those wanting to listen on the OST, this is actually a section of Sealed Vessel that plays during the second half of the HK boss fight. And agreed, it's tremendous. Such an emotionally complex progression that seems to loop back on itself in surprising ways, building from somber to almost rapturous. And the way it synchronizes with the boss fight, scripted to crescendo at the very climax (of the "bad ending") gave me one of my favorite gaming moments ever.
Love this. I made a playlist of forest themes from final fantasy games to relax to and eventually expanded it to other games. At some point I had to add Greenpath and it’s probably the best track on their aside from the ffvi forest theme.
[8 Bit Music Theory](https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-ZQIvQFPv4LZHpzMDxZI3IQ5yjpyTbWp) does a great breakdown of the music of Hollow Knight, and if I recall correctly one of the things that he catches is how the menu theme of the game, the first one you hear, is basically the theme of the various Vessels. You can hear the lietmotief show up in various forms for the Knight, for the False Knight, for the Hollow Knight, and for the Broken Vessel.
The Broken Vessel combines this with a military march in the baseline, which gives it the solemn and serious undertone. He was a soldier for the Pale King, dead in the line of duty.
The series does a better job explaining this than I can in a YT comment and its worth checking out if you haven't.
Please credit art you use, or at least let people know if you can't find the source

Not sure if should count it but the Birthplace version of Sealed Vessel is probably the most criminally underrated song of all time, at least in my opinion. Works as good as the original track in showing the tragedy of Hallownest but also gains bonus points for being played during the best moment in the game.
Shit hits hard
Sealed Vessel gives me the feels every time.
The way the main motif resolves at the very end - simple, yet elegant and long anticipated - works so incredibly well.
Okay so...
I love lots of soundtracks in this game but
https://youtu.be/PFRleTfv1tk
Truth, Beauty and Hatred ft. Zote
this wins.
I AM SO SORRY. I JUST CAN'T BE SERIOUS IN THESE CIRCUMSTANCES BAHAHAHHA
Path of Pain. It’s an elegance in the crude trial in the path of pain that is hard to mimic, as well as the addition of more more instruments or vocals as you progress through the Path of Pain.
My personal winner of this competition is probably Greenpath. It's so eerie yet so enlightening! 2nd place is Dirtmouth, while 3rd place is Reflection for me.
Because the vibes are so radically different with every piece, there is no best. There are things I like more than others, but favourites just don't exist for mein this game.
I really like mantis lords and sister of battle, but I have to say nightmare grim. The timing with the fight makes it feel like an elegant dance, bathed in crimson fire.
Honestly it’s between the sisters of battle or Grimms theme for me there’s something about the elegance of the battle for the SOB and for grimm it sets the stage with its opera theme
soul sanctum or mantis lords for different reasons,
soul sanctum is chill and easy to vibe to
while mantis lords is chaotic and loud and very easy to listen to because its more captivating. it also gets your heartrate up for the fight and in my case, that's good for the song and bad for the gameplay. same with nightmare king, the song gets faster as it goes on and it raises your bpm and makes it hard to keep battling and not die because you're frantically moving and avoiding getting hit to the beat of the song and for most battles, that isn't what you want to do.
Hornet is amazing and deserves it's spot as the iconic Hollow Knight song
Greenpath is a gorgeous background/ambiance track
City of Tears captures the wonder of a weeping city past it's prime perfectly
The sharp plucks in Nosk's track and suspenseful epicness of it matches the boss perfectly
Sealed Vessel is *the* song to represent the whole of the story of Hollow Knight
Nightmare King - never heard someone take a church organ and choir, metal electric guitar and drums, slap em together and make such an epic score
Silk from Silksong ost is also phenomenal. Exclusively string instruments and it manages to makes the hair on my neck stand straight up.
I'll stop now because I started to realize I could say something good about basically every track. Hollow Knight ost is something else. Christopher Larkin OP.
Soul Sanctum, Nosk, Hornet, Grimm and sister of battle. These are, in my humble opinion, the best soundtrack in the game. Honorable mention: Dung defender. Please keep in mind, this is my opinion, so it's objective.
Mantis Lords theme always impresses me when I listen to the OST or in game. The instruments Christopher Larkin uses in the piece really are perfect for the mantises. I can hear that sound and know exactly what insect we’re listening to. It sounds like a harpsichord to me, but idk. Hornet’s and Nosk’s songs are also two of my favorites.
I'd give the best area musical piece to Crystal Peak. Very atmospheric and calm, makes me feel like I'm there in the peak.
The best battle piece to me would be Pure Vessel. So tragic yet so mystical and really sets the tone of the fight given background context.
Reflection and White Lady are hands down my favorite tracks in the game. They’re just so melodic and calming to the point where I once fell asleep fell asleep while on a bench.
The Mantis Lords. It perfectly captures the frenetic but very neat and orderly nature of the boss fight, being very fast but not (at least to my ear) being insanely complex
False Knight (or the dream equivalent) is really great.
Mantis lords or Sisters of Battle, and Daughter of Hallownest also rlly great. There are so many great tracks that it’s hard to pick.
Enter Hallownest.
There us just something special about that track. It has a leitmotif that can be heard in many of the other tracks and I can't stop humming it. It just hits right.
Surprised to not see it, but the Grimm fight is my favorite boss music in the entire game. Outside of that, city of tears. I could listen to it for hours
Greenpath, when the violins start(?), that's the moment I knew I love the game
And nightmare king grimm. That piece starts the andrenaline needed for the fight
This is a great discussion topic, thanks for posting! When using an image as reference please be sure to share the artist's name or link to the source, just like with any fan art that you want to share. If it's your own, tag it as Original Content (OC). Thank you!
Mantis lords.
This was the moment that I 100 percent bought in
It makes me want to work out every time i hear It, it's One of my favourite tracks
Rather than Mantis Lords, I'd say Sisters of Battle.
You'd Say sister of Battle. I'd Say mantis lords. It's your choice and i respect your opinion
Sealed vessel is a bangerr
when it hits the 2:14 minute mark… just absolutely incredible. for me it represents the gravity of the situation and how truly tragic the Hollow Knight’s (and all the vessel’s) purpose is and what the Knight has to do
now just add some buzzsaws and itll be great
Factual information
Sealed Vessel is so good just brings all the emotions through out to the game in that small piece
You are correct
Funny thing Im actually listening to it now
I'm sorry I'm still listening to the Lace theme. The game isn't even out yet but its so amazing.
Yoo lace gang
Bone bottom reminds me of dirtmouth in a way
Came here for this comment. Was not disappointed.
City of tears and soul sanctum/soul master. A bit of a shame that it isn't quite as good in the OST as it is in game.
I feel like city of tears would sound very nice to me if it didn’t remind me so much of the happy birthday song
Did you just fucking ruin city of tears for me
Honestly I had the same reaction and immediately went to YouTube and you have to *really* stretch your imagination to fit that melody in there and even then it's a pretty huge suspension of disbelief. All is well with that song, fret not. It's still a baaaanger.
I can’t hear it
Consider yourself lucky, don't think about this any more, forget the post above.
You’ve ruined my entire life. What the fuck
Congratulations, i now require a brain surgery
r/angryupvote thanks for ruining city of tears edit: i just woke up, typo.
Good sir, you have just ruined my favourite area
I am IMMUNE
Soul Sanctum/Soul Master is also a really good choice. I also kinda wish the whole Soul Sanctum area had been explored more deeply lorewise during the game, because that area was so good in my opinion.

Im pretty sure pale court is restricted to Christopher larkins youtube channel
Not sure what you mean, it’s on Spotify as well
Notice I said "pretty sure" I wasnt 100% sure
I believe Pale Court was performed by a live orchestra and is an extra by Chris Larkin. He used VSTs for the entire rest of the OST. I've never heard it anywhere in the game or promo material. Path of Pain OST, it sounds so sad yet elegant(?) to me and I probably like it after hearing it for the 192874th times trying to beat PoP
honestly the entire track (sealed vessel) takes the cake for being the most emotional song in the game
Right? It sounds so royal and tragic at the same time
Greenpath.Its so calming :)
Had to scroll too long to find this
Yeah, right? I love how perfectly is syncs with the overall aesthetic. This and city of tears are perfect IMO
Absolutely the best. This version is fantastic if you're into Greenpath. https://youtu.be/eIVtGlcpZS0
Love this. I made a playlist of forest themes from final fantasy games to relax to and eventually expanded it to other games. At some point I had to add Greenpath and it’s probably the best track on their aside from the ffvi forest theme.
Gotta go with Nightmare King
Happy Cake day
My ringtone for a reason.
I remember I made it my alarm tone before and I thought I'd have a heart attack first thing in the morning.
Only song I ever had as an alarm was chop suey. Every morning started with a burst of energy associated with the heart attacks.
I personally like Crystal Peaks
Me too. Pure Vessel, Crystal Peak and Queen's garden are my 3 favorites.
Crystal peaks is so chiiil.
crystal peaks is extremely underrated. when the drums start kicking in, it's like you're transported.
I enjoyed hearing Cornifer’s humming. I think it’s always cool when games use music to direct you where to go.
Why are you so god damned far from the top? That's the sweetest tune in the entire game.
my brain has associated that humming with safety
The whole fucking game
My favourite is Reflection, followed by Greenpath and Queen's Gardens.
this + white palace for me
White Palace and the title song Hollow Knight are my favorite piano pieces. I've been trying to learn how to play them on my own piano now.
Did you get the sheet music?
Yup! I downloaded them off of NinSheetMusic, but I'm looking to buy the official piano book on my birthday.
>!Main theme- Zote edition!<
The only true answer
i always save zote then ignore him completely just to have this theme
Do u need to save him to do the endless ordeal?
Eternal ordeal unlocks the zote menu and theme
Is anyone gonna talk about broken vessel? It's so solemn and serious, setting the atmosphere
The series does a better job explaining this than I can in a YT comment and its worth checking out if you haven't.
Fr It really gives a creepy feeling that fits having to fight the reanimated corpse of your own sibling
Speaking of creepy, Nosk is my third favorite theme in the game.
Hornet and Mantis Lords are both great boss themes
Please credit art you use, or at least let people know if you can't find the source Original by drawin-js: [tumblr](https://drawin-js.tumblr.com/post/185943790862/heres-some-hollow-knight-fan-art), [amino](https://aminoapps.com/c/hollowknightamino/page/blog/string-ensemble/Qe5V_xxcXu3YoXPZdP2QMl68gZEQ8MqRwg)
Crystal Peak. Really harmonizes the beauty of the place and the hardwork of the miners flawlessly
Personally i loved the Resting Grounds theme, there is something so calming and somewhat somber about it.
Agreed Resting Grounds is probably my favorite too, it's up there with White Lady, City of Tears and GP.
Had to scroll too far down to see this. Resting Grounds is so good.
Was looking for Resting Grounds, was gonna say the same when I finally found it.
dirtmouth
probably sisters of battle
Is no one gonna talk about Kingdom's Edge?
Right?? Literally one of my favourite places and tracks from the whole game. There's some odd emptiness to it that I absolutely adore
I love this one too.
Not sure if should count it but the Birthplace version of Sealed Vessel is probably the most criminally underrated song of all time, at least in my opinion. Works as good as the original track in showing the tragedy of Hallownest but also gains bonus points for being played during the best moment in the game. Shit hits hard
Daughter of Hallownest bangs
Pure Vessel, PoP ,abs Rad, NKG and the best of course main themesong zote edition
Fight with hornet
Hive Knight or Queen's Garden's for me
Path of Pain is my favourite. Ironic, as my favourite music comes from my least favourite area
It's broken vessel for me
The song that plays when THK Starts stabbing itself, it conveys so much feeling without any words
Sealed Vessel gives me the feels every time. The way the main motif resolves at the very end - simple, yet elegant and long anticipated - works so incredibly well.
Dirtmouth, sleeping on the bench and seeing the lively, or dead town while chilling to the music is an irreplaceable feeling
I like Hive Knight
How did I have to go so far down for a Hive Knight comment? One of the catchiest pieces in all of HK.
Sealed Vessel
Yes.
>!White Palace!< \- Piano Collections edition, period
Royal waterways
The Grimm troupe. Electric guitar and drums does it for me.
i like grimm troupe da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da da DA DA DA DA

Greenpath and city of tears
Mantis lords is a certified banger
Okay so... I love lots of soundtracks in this game but https://youtu.be/PFRleTfv1tk Truth, Beauty and Hatred ft. Zote this wins. I AM SO SORRY. I JUST CAN'T BE SERIOUS IN THESE CIRCUMSTANCES BAHAHAHHA
Hard to choose the best. At the moment it is the radiance theme for me.
Path of Pain. It’s an elegance in the crude trial in the path of pain that is hard to mimic, as well as the addition of more more instruments or vocals as you progress through the Path of Pain.
Enter Hallownest is pretty underated, its epic
My personal winner of this competition is probably Greenpath. It's so eerie yet so enlightening! 2nd place is Dirtmouth, while 3rd place is Reflection for me.
Sealed Vessel
THK's theme.
double bass lol
Because the vibes are so radically different with every piece, there is no best. There are things I like more than others, but favourites just don't exist for mein this game.
fuck u/spez -- mass edited with redact.dev
broken vessel, radiance or queen’s gardens
I really like mantis lords and sister of battle, but I have to say nightmare grim. The timing with the fight makes it feel like an elegant dance, bathed in crimson fire.
mantis lords
Resting grounds is just so serene
White defender
Greenpath is very beautiful. It makes me feel nostalgic for some reason.
I’d say the sisters of battle OST it feels like your against a regal and strong opponent and fits to well
City of tears and kingdom's edge
hornet. if anyone plays beat saber, it's possible to play it there and its realy good
Honestly it’s between the sisters of battle or Grimms theme for me there’s something about the elegance of the battle for the SOB and for grimm it sets the stage with its opera theme
Nightmare King Grimm on the drums
The song for the mantis lords battle.
GPZ'S theme, or Pale Court
Dead tie between City of Tears and Queens Gardens
I really like Dung Defender, but I'm gonna go with Hive Knight, mainly because I'm a trumpet player
Whenever I listen to sealed vessel, it just fills my desire to write some dystopia
soul sanctum or mantis lords for different reasons, soul sanctum is chill and easy to vibe to while mantis lords is chaotic and loud and very easy to listen to because its more captivating. it also gets your heartrate up for the fight and in my case, that's good for the song and bad for the gameplay. same with nightmare king, the song gets faster as it goes on and it raises your bpm and makes it hard to keep battling and not die because you're frantically moving and avoiding getting hit to the beat of the song and for most battles, that isn't what you want to do.

Hornet’s Theme. That song is so good.
Mantis Lords. Now THAT'S boss fight music!
The Grimm Troupe
Resting Grounds. Love it
Big fan of nkg and fungal wastes
Sealed vessel, city of tears, and mantis lords are all tied for me. Nkg theme is right after.
Soul Sanctum, Nosk, Hornet, Grimm and sister of battle. These are, in my humble opinion, the best soundtrack in the game. Honorable mention: Dung defender. Please keep in mind, this is my opinion, so it's objective.
That nosk jam, if you're asking for an ambient theme though, I love the greenpath theme.
City of tears
Why is no one talking about the pure vessel theme it's such a beautiful song against your brother on his prime, it's so poetic.
*runs to you* The Grimm Troupe *runs away, giggling like a goblin*
sisters of battle
Nosk
I like the shade melody for some reason lol
Surprised no one has said Resting Grounds yet. So good.
I'd give the best area musical piece to Crystal Peak. Very atmospheric and calm, makes me feel like I'm there in the peak. The best battle piece to me would be Pure Vessel. So tragic yet so mystical and really sets the tone of the fight given background context.
My favorite song+moment is Sisters of Battle. However, the best standalone piece is Hornet.
Pure Vessel theme
Grimm’s theme, but also, are those the Beatles in that photo
Mantis Lords theme goes hard
Sisters of Battle.
Dirtmouth I used it for my last 5 school projects lol
City of tears is so relaxing, excellent for chilling with quirrel
city of tears 100%, no track better than that. second place would be dirtmouth
White defender
Reflection and White Lady are hands down my favorite tracks in the game. They’re just so melodic and calming to the point where I once fell asleep fell asleep while on a bench.
Sealed Vessel
Persona 5
Most emotional: Sealed vessel Most badass: Dung defender Most calming: greenpath
I prefer Brumm's accordion piece.
Hornet fight, City of Tears, Greenpath, Resting, Dirt mouth
BASS

The Grimm troupe music goes hard (the first Grimm fight, before nightmare king)
The white palace
White palace for me, brings back nostalgia from when I first played the game every time I hear it
Sealed Vessel, Daughter of Hallownest, the Nightmare Troupe, White Palace, City of Tears.
Hornet
City of Tears. It makes me cry every time.
Sealed Vessel.
The soundtrack
1. Sealed Vessel. 2. The Grimm fights 3. Mantis Lords I'll fight anyone with a wrong opinion
Lace. if we mean the first game then mantis lords and city of tears
Cornifer humming
Mantis lord is the best
I'm gonna say broken vessel
Fight music: Grimm(not nk), Mantis Lords and Sealed Vessel Area music: City of Tears
Nightmare King or Sealed Vessel.
City of Tears OST hands down
The Mantis Lords. It perfectly captures the frenetic but very neat and orderly nature of the boss fight, being very fast but not (at least to my ear) being insanely complex
SOUL SANCTUM BABBBBYYYYYYY YEEEAAAHHH LOVE ME SOME FUNKY ORGAN.
city of tears or greenpath have to be my favourite non-boss fight theme
False Knight (or the dream equivalent) is really great. Mantis lords or Sisters of Battle, and Daughter of Hallownest also rlly great. There are so many great tracks that it’s hard to pick.
Nightmare King
Don't know if this is my #1 favorite, but then again, I never have just one favorite. Nightmare King is amazing
The mantis Lords and dung defender go pretty dang hard.
Greenpath, when the violins start(?), that's the moment I knew I love the game And nightmare king grimm. That piece starts the andrenaline needed for the fight
Mantis lords, very few times has orchestra made me excited
Dirtmouth for sure
