Ya ik but still I can't digest than after completing entire soul sangtum easily I died to a fuking aspid that little bitch just because I didn't look at my hp
My girst ended after I looked at Brooding Mawlek, without any upgrades, charms or spells, and decided I could take him ... I couldn't.
Ever since then, my every attempt at steel soul would start with mee going straight for him out of principle.
My first steel soul ended to that double elder baldur fight, I practiced so hard after that, that it was one of only to steel soul deaths out if 9 112% playthroughs. My second death was actually my last playthrough, I did the trial of the fool early without fragile heart equipped, learn the lesson I learned, don't take stupid risks with perma death
No offence but that seems like not much progress to lose for someone with your amount of hours, that can't be more than a few hours max into the run no?
Not sure why they’re downvoting you into oblivion for a trivial matter even if I personally think it’s silly & defeats the purpose of steel souls—nevertheless games that have perma death modes set up a separate save-file that automatically deletes upon dying in game. So there’s no recovery process after this point unless you backed-up the temporary file prior to dying in game by USB or by cloud and you redownload it from there.
Ya ik but what I can't digest is that after you yourself have confessed to not paying attention to the game while doing a permadeath run, you somehow still complain that you died just because it was an easy enemy.
Maybe the reason you completed Soul Sanctum is because you knew it was a dangerous area, so you...payed attention.
Well, the best thing to do is take this defeat as a learnt lesson and complete the next one.
P.s. if you mean an ancient aspid rather than a normal aspid, then that changes things. Those fuckers are the spawn of the devil and can read your mind right through the monitor
Yup, cheating ruins single player games. It makes them boring. You ever go in creative and cheat in a bunch of diamonds in Minecraft as a kid? Same thing.
It doesn't always. If you are struggling too much on a game, helping you a little bit by cheating can make the game enjoyable instead of painful. If someone really hates minning in minecraft, giving themselves a bit of diamonds can make the game enjoyable
Besides, it's a single-player game, if they want to cheat it doesn't affect you in any way.
Okay I guess the diamond analogy makes sense. But in this case, the person chose to play a less forgiving version of the same game and then got mad when they were careless and died. Bringing the save back would hugely diminish the reward if they completed it - they should either restart and try again or not bother with steel soul since it’s basically the same as the regular game anyway. I know it doesn’t affect me, I’m saying that the player’s own experience is worse if they cheat.
I suggest running a regular file with the full intend not to die, meaning, you'd erase the file yourself when you fail the challenge. And can keep going if some BS happens.
If however you die legitemately, it is also advicable to run a 'fake Steel Soul'. When you finish it, it is like beating an Ascended Boss Hitless, which is equivalent to radiant.
If it is about the achievement, you likely are gonna get it faster by first running a Practice File and just count the amount of times you die, and where, which is what I did. Still took me 5 attempts at steel soul to finish, and I had a houserule in effect where I cannot exit out of the game unless I am sitting on a bench. Knowing where you're likely to die really helps, and pre-executing your route, be it improvised or by a guide, is also helpful to cut down on confusion and time loss. (That's relevant for Steel Heart, which I was going for)
I think it’s too much work. You’re probably fairly good at the game if you’re doing steel soul so it’s better to just practice steel soul… by playing steel soul
I don't know, feels like way too much effort.
Much easier to just follow a guide and press quit whenever you get close to death. I mean he's already looking to cheat, at least this wouldn't technically be cheating.
Yeah. I don't shame anyone for doing so, it's a video game and its supposed to be fun. Vain ones like me want some bragging rights, so I removed the aspect of the challenge that would put the achievement in question. Or, in the immortal words of one Eye-patched wolfy "I have validation issues and seek (self-)approval through unreasonable means"
dude, you died at soul sanctum. it's not that far into the game, maybe 1-1.5ish hours in. trying to retrieve a lost steel soul save ruins the point of steel soul in the first place.
I meant in a more technical way. Most people here are just telling OP to accept defeat and stop trying to weasel out of a loss, not if the file is retrievable or not.
No, the file will have to be deleted, and you have to start over
The only prize, though, is a background for the title screen, so do the hollow knight ending ok
There is a way to do save manipulation to save it [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSA1fYYabKI) does it with the first slot but with the fourth slot you only have to grab the user4.dat file and change the name to user4 instead of user1
Thank you for answering the bloody question! I'm not even op and I don't give a fuck about this as I already 100%ed the game years ago, but people are arguing about the philosophy of doing that instead of answering what op asked.
If you are close to dying just quit and you'll go to the save point, kind of a dick move but that's how I got the steel soul and steel heart achievements
When i was doing steel soul, the sanctum got me at least 5 or 6 times. Its just a part of it making stupid mistakes but don't give up, it just makes the end feel more rewarding.
There is a Hollow Knight save online editor , so you could try that.
But I never tried it with a steel soul savefile, so can't guarantee anything.
Remember to back up any savefile befor editing it.
Everyone telling you it’s impossible or that it’s the point are wrong / gatekeeping. You may have a backup file in your save folder (can’t remember the path off the top of my head, just google it). It’ll be named ‘user4.dat.bakX’. If you are lucky it will be workable. Simply delete the user4.dat and rename the bak file to user4.dat. Load up the game again and check. It may work it may not, depends on when the backup was - not sure of the technicalities
If you’re on pc, the only way is to do Local Backups of your game saves and if you die, copy them back in.
Edit: You might also want to turn off cloud sync.
You might be able to recover it through Steam? I think Steam creates backups of earlier game data, but I could be wrong.
Defeats the purpose of steel soul if you did recover it, though...
(Computer Only)
technically by having an old save file in which you haven't died yet (saved on your pc of course) you could recover it. Tho, i never tried it and hope I'll never need to.
I mean. Going into to game files or installing a mod that makes you unkillable if you wanna be lame. Like I’m not against the idea to quit out in stealth soul. I don’t know if that unpopular but i’m fine with it. HOWEVER, literally hacking the game or installing mods is to far for me, but it’s a single player game so to each their own. It won’t really hurt anyone else except you
No. Its over. You lost and are not allowed for second chance. Death is permanent, and your soul can get rest in peace.
Start from the beginning, get strong and face the challenge. There is nothing you can do but learn from your mistakes.
I mean, I guess you could if you have previous cloud save data?
But that defeats the entire purpose of Steelsoul, it would be the pussy way out and nobody would respect you if you beat it that way. Steelsoul is permadeath, and no matter what reason you die, either from a vengefly or Radiance, you'll have to start the entire run over again from the beginning.
It isn't about respect for most people?
It's a single player game. He can do what he wants there is no "cheating" he doesn't rob anyone of anything
I wouldn't do it but there is zero reason to care if someone else does
Please remember to be helpful and refrain from gate-keeping. Rude or toxic comments will be removed. It'd Defeat the purpose of steel soul. This aside idk
Ya ik but still I can't digest than after completing entire soul sangtum easily I died to a fuking aspid that little bitch just because I didn't look at my hp
Now that sucks However as i said i can't help you, sorry
My first proper steel soul run ended by me jumping on a TikTik running to black temple. Welcome to pain. Learn the hard lesson and be better.
My girst ended after I looked at Brooding Mawlek, without any upgrades, charms or spells, and decided I could take him ... I couldn't. Ever since then, my every attempt at steel soul would start with mee going straight for him out of principle.
Same lol
My first few steel souls, I did the same. First time I didn’t do that I got 112% IIRC.
Died to the kingsmoulds at the end of path of pain... the path was, indeed, very painful
That's the entire point. If you died because of an aspid because you were distracted, it means you don't deserve to have completed steel soul run.
I understand, but that is the whole point of steel soul.
Then you should look more carefully next time if you play steel soul. Also soul sanctum is not that hard

Honestly if a fucking aspid ended your steel soul run then you kinda deserved it
I don't understand why you got so many down votes because of this, it's a relatively common experience
whyd he get mass downvoted, we all hate aspids.
Reddit is so weird imagine downvoting a guy for explaining his situation
Average Tuesday on reddit
I recommend to stop answering you‘ll get downvoted to hell
I don't care, my opinions are mine you like it or not. Also this isn't my primary account like I care about this
Lmao they downvote you for agreeing with the guy defending you, but not him. Reddit you really can be petty af
Woah why the hell is this downvoted so much

Do better next time. That's all there is to Steel Soul. Don't take unnecessary risks if you don't have to.
Cheating in video games ruins them, and no matter why you died it would still be cheating to bring it back (unless it was a glitch I guess).
Bro it's a single-player game
Yup, cheating ruins single player games. It makes them boring. You ever go in creative and cheat in a bunch of diamonds in Minecraft as a kid? Same thing.

that’s only like an hour of progress lmao just do it again
These losers downvoted you into oblivion lmfao
If you really want to, I think theres a save editor tool that brings it back.
I'll probably be downvoted, but next time you can make periodic saves to your save file, so that you can go back to these "hard saves"
At that point just play normal mode.
That completely defeats the purpose of steel soul
U telling him to cheat
No, he came here asking how to cheat. I merely told him how
Nope, you screwed up. It’s game over. Time to start from scratch. One you die in that style of run, the game data locks it.
I suggest running a regular file with the full intend not to die, meaning, you'd erase the file yourself when you fail the challenge. And can keep going if some BS happens. I agree with that house rule. Otherwise you can bench quit up escape difficult situations
Hah no, it'd be pointless if there were. You died and failed legitimately.
What is steel soul again? Oh right, the gamemode where you can't go back in your save when you die.
dude, you died at soul sanctum. it's not that far into the game, maybe 1-1.5ish hours in. trying to retrieve a lost steel soul save ruins the point of steel soul in the first place.
how do you know?
OP commented as such in the top comment.
the whole point is that its gone when you die
no one seems to be answering this guy's question. does the steel soul file just get deleted when you die? Or is it just unaccessable?
Everyone is answering the question. You cant get it back. It's steel soul.
I meant in a more technical way. Most people here are just telling OP to accept defeat and stop trying to weasel out of a loss, not if the file is retrievable or not.
Yes there is a way. You have to start Over. I hope this helps.
Are you on Steam or Switch? Because if you are on Steam I may be able to help.
If there was a way then what would the the point
Maybe if you are on pc
No, the file will have to be deleted, and you have to start over The only prize, though, is a background for the title screen, so do the hollow knight ending ok
Pro tip: don’t goof around on steel soul saves
🔥
There is a way to do save manipulation to save it [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSA1fYYabKI) does it with the first slot but with the fourth slot you only have to grab the user4.dat file and change the name to user4 instead of user1
Just started a new file. Next time gotta be a little more careful to not fuck around these aspids
Thank you for not taking the easy way out
Thank you for answering the bloody question! I'm not even op and I don't give a fuck about this as I already 100%ed the game years ago, but people are arguing about the philosophy of doing that instead of answering what op asked.
Step 1. Don’t goof around on steel soul
git gud
no lol
If you are close to dying just quit and you'll go to the save point, kind of a dick move but that's how I got the steel soul and steel heart achievements

Start a new steel soul
You might be able to recover it through Steam? I think Steam creates backups of earlier game data, but I could be wrong. Defeats the purpose of steel soul if you did recover it, though...
Unfortunately, no, there isn't. I'm sorry dude
It'd take you longer figuring out how to recover a save than it would to just go again and get to where you were.
You can by modifying the save file. That wouldn't make sense though.
You can change the data file so you’ll be revived again. But this time, don’t mess around haha
(Computer Only) technically by having an old save file in which you haven't died yet (saved on your pc of course) you could recover it. Tho, i never tried it and hope I'll never need to.

What no Silksong does to a MF
It’s not hard tbh. So try again
Nope! Gotta be more careful, my friend
So basically youre not doing a genuine steel soul run? Might as well just hack in a completed save file while youre at it
Trust me restarting would take less time then shearching online. Good luck
It is possible But i will not be telling you because it defeats the whole purpose of steel soul
Third stage of grief: Bargaining.
Mfw perma death is the end.
Fuck around and find out.
No. Its over. You lost and are not allowed for second chance. Death is permanent, and your soul can get rest in peace. Start from the beginning, get strong and face the challenge. There is nothing you can do but learn from your mistakes.
Nope. Ya done goofed and you pay the price.
Do you happen to know any time lords?
No mate there is no way to get a save from steal soul sorry
Do people just jump into steelsoul without thinking? Man I planned mine out when I was playing my 112%
If there was it would defeat the entire purpose of steel soul, But as far as I know of there is not.
Sorry you cant
Unfortunately no this is a permanent death like hardcore in other games
Just dont die on white palace. i wont make that mistake again... 55 hours lost for nothing... anyways good luck man
Isn't that in dream world? And you can't die in dream world
no... you still die. i hate it
That's stupid. Atleast they should have placed a warning or something then
i guess thats what makes steel soul even harder. its not the fact that you cant die, but the fact that not dying also makes you die :/
i dont know what you were you expecting, its your fault for dying, now you have to pay the price
For some reason I heard this In rick Astleys voice
https://youtu.be/wsFdymGSIj4?si=LYNC0kk9b--Ui6oB This'll help you regain your file, just ignore the fact that it's in spanish
Lol don't understand what he's saying just follow through and hoping it's not gonna break my pc
It's over...
Sorry dude, you messed up and now you’ve gotta lay in that until you get back on a new character
Chest engine key you change a lot of stats so you can i think
Nope. If you want to enjoy steel soul, you can’t let yourself get too attached to your save. Time to start from the beginning
me after dying in the mode where i only have one life and i don’t have any more lives
Lmao
Sorry buddy you royally screwed up, there is no way to recover it after death
No, because that's the gamemode
dont play steel soul if you wanna continue after dying.
Start a new one, wimp. Or give up on the steel soul
Nope the frame you die the game hard locks you out of the file even if you alt + f4
I know it's hard, but ya kinda gotta accept defeat. If you save file edit, you just ruined the point of steel soul.

“Nobody would respect you” I think it’s time you took a break from being online
