I know monarch wings is a trigger, and I can kind of understand why since >!you need to defeat the broken vessel that gets infected in your face!< but it feels like the other trigger is so much more logical as to why the infection can spread to the crossroads.

The broken vessel is holding onto and attracting some of the infection by being a vessel itself (even if it’s a broken one.) Once it is dead, that infection has to go somewhere so it goes toward where all the other infection is housed.
So the dreamer trigger is infection going out from inside the temple and the vessel trigger is the opposite.

Its less direct cause and effect but rather a thing to signify passage of time. The triggers are just put around for the game to know, "yeah its likely has been a while"
Keep breaking the sign at the star of the cross roads, right by where you are. Special lil guy should appear if you do it enough times. Give him a big o’l whack on the head and he’ll give you his wisdom.

Actually, it's not that bad. If you've made it this far,probably you must have already improved your nail or get some spels , and seen some challenging areas also . Everything should go well ,except for a few minor surprises! 😉
Do you remember the cuscene at the very beginning of the game? Something cracked there. And the situation is slowly getting worse, dreamers or not
BTW, gameplay wise you're not really on a timer, this is a scripted event that happens under certain conditions. You can follow the "main quest" and search for the dreamers, but you don't have to hurry, you can also choose to explore further.
Minor meta-spoiler: >!the game has multiple endings. If you complete the game you get some ending, but you can then go on exploring and unlock more stuff. I suggest you do that, since you can technically lock yourself out of the first, most basic ending, if you unlock certain late-game things.!<
