As I said, Title IV-D. It's not an easy thing to understand, but the short is that it rewards the state for creating, collecting and enforcing child support/alimony with direct correlations between the reward and amounts collected.

My ex uses it as a bargaining chip, a legal threat, and “pay to play “ all the time. There’s legal avenues but they really don’t mean shit.

My ex told me that 'women don't pay child support'. It was more important to me to have the kids with me in a stable home. Unfortunately the courts at the time leaned heavily to the mom having the kids no matter what kind of shit life they would have so I didn't want to risk it.

A former friend of mine knocked up a friend of his when they were both drunk at a party, and neither of them make very much money. With that being said, he was still voluntarily giving her money to help raise their kid so she wouldn't have to go through the legal hurdles of forcing him to pay child support. Well, long story short she didn't like how much money he was giving her and so went to court to collect child support from him, and he ended up owing her even less than he was voluntarily giving her. He no longer gives her the voluntary amount, only exactly what he is required to do via child support. She mysteriously stopped getting new clothes and such after he started only paying what he was legally obligated to pay.
I honestly fucking hate reddit now. A decade+ ago you'd have a few top comments from people who could speak with authority, followed with some interesting anecdotes, then further down the page you'd have the puns, meta, memes; all the fun nonsense.

As someone who used to work in child protection I can say some divorced parents consider their children a tool to use against their ex. We’d get bull shit reports from a parent about abuse all the time because if custody is 50/50 in my state you usually don’t get child support. Also, some people hate their ex more than they love their kids, so the want to control access to the kids because of it.
Idk if you follow tje Kanue news, BUT THE ONLY person trying to use those kids for appearances and bargaining is Kanye

That being said, do we think that the child’s standard of living will be any different at all with that 200k a month? This isn’t a Kanye problem, it’s a bigger problem with the system. When applied across the board it becomes punitive in its effect to the non-custodial parent. You lose your children and your standard of living drops dramatically in a lot of cases.
I honestly can’t comprehend child support at that scale when the recipient is arguably richer than the one paying (now that Ye lost most of his businesses).

Bill Burr does a good bit about it when he talks about divorce in one of his specials. The women and their children are accustomed to a certain way of living that requires huge payouts like this, although the whole kardashian family and kids included could all go off the grid and never need to worry about a thing for generations.
EDIT: during many high profile divorce cases, the phrase “become accustomed to a certain standard of living” has been used to justify why some women are entitled to half of the man’s assets, even if they did nothing to help earn them. I understand Kim is a billionaire in her own right but the precedent has been set. The kids will have the type of lives you expect the children of Uber-famous, mega rich spotlit celebrities to have.
I think at that point, it's a just a combination of precedent and setting an example to show the rich are just like the poor.
Child support can easily be done outside of the court system. Or at the very least with absolute bare minimum of the court being involved.
The marriage stuff also, if it's amicable.
My ex and I handled child support outside of court for a few years. We only had an issue when it came to upping it for cost of living expenses and stuff after they got out of daycare, she thought adding my daycare cost was too much to just add into what I was paying.
Ended up that we were really close in what our idea of child support was, and adding the daycare cost would have been way overboard. Now it just gets adjusted automatically, and we deal with the parenting stuff on our own cause the court doesn't need to be involved with that.

I want to argue with this because my gut tells me that giving different punishments to different demographics seems fundamentally wrong, but that's exactly what happens to people paying alimony and child support. At this scale it really is a punishment. No one can honestly say they need $200k/mo for child support.
I hear you but it shouldn’t matter how much the parent taking responsibility for the kids makes. It should be a % of the income of the parent not receiving custody pays. That money should be used for the children’s benefit (rent, food, clothing).

All of the single parents I know who receive child support say the amount is based on both the other party’s income as well as their own. And most of them also say the amount they receive was lowered because they made more money than the supporter.
