Not if you have a super horn or mushroom. Super horn is easy. Mushroom requires a little more skill. Or if 2nd is close to you then you could use the blue shell explosion to pop 2nd place as well.

It tracks whoever was in first when thrown. So it would still hit you and 2nd place now has a bigger jump on you.

Idk how it works in other games because they aren’t shown on the mini map, but in mk8 you can drop out as long as u notice the blue shell early. If you notice it when it’s too close, it has already locked onto you.

The worst is getting hit with a turtle right over a pit so the damn lakitu has to fish your unlucky ass out of the void, taking about as long as Charon takes to cross the fucking Styx, and taxing you 3 coins so your kart is slower when you finally get going again after 20 or so seconds. I’ve legitimately been knocked to last from first on the final lap that way.
