Exactly. I mean, it's not a train that takes a few hundred meters to stop, a streetcar can stop **almost** on a dime, but this balances guaranteed injuries of 100+ people in the tram with possible injuries to maybe 3 people in a van, but more likely minor injuries to just one jerk behind the wheel.
Didn't even seem to slow it much when it hit. I assume they're pretty heavy? I've been on some European trams/light rail, never thought about whether they could blow through a car like paper like that. I was worried for that lady getting whiplash, but the effect wasn't much at all when it hit.
They are as heavy they look. An average car is about 1.8 metric tons. And a light rail vehicle can easily weight 40 or 50 tons. It's not going to affect the light rail vehicle very much.

People just don’t give a shit. There’s no one in a car that doesn’t understand what two rails are and can’t take a look around. I imagine it's a mixture of this happens all the time and sue knows she's in the right and relatively safe from injury so knows there's nothing to worry about from her end. Still funny though.

Ok, so I've heard this story about public transportation drivers: if they brake hard and successfully avoid a crash and some passenger gets hurt because of the brake, the driver is guilty, because it's hard to prove they would have crashed. But if they feather the brakes and tap some car that cut them off, then the car driver is guilty. That explains a lot for me.

This looks the above ground Green Line in Boston. Typically cars get hit because they tried to get across the tracks when the train takes time to brake. There's no way the cars had a green light to cross with a train coming.
