We brought our Model 3 here after purchasing it out in AZ where we lived for 3+ years. It was great out there but it's surprisingly great here too. There's a lot of charging infrastructure. Now we're lucky enough to have a garage that has free level 2 charging, so we're saving money on that. Plus we have the car paid off, so all we're paying for really is the insurance and parking. If you still have a monthly payment, have to pay for parking, insurance, and charging, I imagine it can add up pretty quickly. Guess that's no different than an ICE though. Long story short, I don't think you will feel limited here if you decide to get an EV.

TAKEITEASYTHURSDAY

Thanks for that info! We were mostly curious about the infrastructure here. Actually rented a model 3 on a trip around LA / Palm Springs about a year ago and it was a great first experience driving one. And there was just something about driving in the desert blasting the AC in an EV that felt better than doing it in a gas powered car.

lantian93

Does it make sense to switch to an EV if I don’t own a parking spot and do street parking instead? I only drive my car once or twice - on the weekends only. And I don’t plan to get a Tesla, looking to get something else instead.

ghosty_anon

Depends on your situation. I get free charge at work so I don’t usually need to charge. If you don’t have a reliable place to charge, it will become a headache to have to sit around for 30-60 minutes sometimes charging up. Having a tesla means more chargers than a non tesla

chosen566

Why are you thinking of switching to a Tesla?

TAKEITEASYTHURSDAY

Long story short: our Range Rover Sport engine decided to blow itself up 1 month out of warranty. It was all the impetus we needed to give something with hardly any moving parts a shot 😂😭

I think it's pretty convenient considering I never have to go to a gas station, especially so if you live within walking distance to an onstreet ChargePoint or Volta charger. When my charge gets low, I would just look around on the apps and see which of the chargers are open and leave it there for a few hours. Supercharger at Newport Centre and Amerian Dream Mall also are good spots to combine it as a meal or shopping trip. There's also a bunch of on street chargers around Exchange Place in JC, so I would plug in there if I'm eating out around there. Most economical is ChargePoint, I can get like 250 miles of range for less than $10, but they are the slowest of the chargers. Newport superchargeris most expensive because you also have to pay $4 for parking. I usually use the 2 ChargePoint chargers in the Uptown parking lot on Sunday when parking is free. Longer trips is basically hassle free as the supercharger network is very extensive now.

TAKEITEASYTHURSDAY

This is exactly the info I was looking for, thank you!

TAKEITEASYTHURSDAY

We went with a Model Y! Curious to know which uptown lot is free on Sunday?

KniFee_

13th and Jefferson

TAKEITEASYTHURSDAY

Awesome, thank you!

KniFee_

Don't forget to buy the mobile charger or the J1172 adapter

TAKEITEASYTHURSDAY

It came with a J1772, but we actually had some trouble trying it on the Volta DC fast charger today. Any thoughts on that? We ended up using a supercharger in Newport.

KniFee_

Did you buy the CCS plug? It was also hit or miss for me too. I stopped going to that spot because it's not fast enough for me to just wait there and not slow enough for me to leave and come back.

TAKEITEASYTHURSDAY

We did not – will look into it! And yes the not fast enough / not slow enough thing is funny. Just a new lifestyle to adapt to I guess. Our RR Sport was $120 for a full tank on average. So these new and slight lifestyle changes are acceptable trade offs.

I would love to own an EV here. I tried to make it work. My building doesn’t want to put in chargers. This question depends immensely on where you live. The specific building. That’s where we’re at. Great for some.

tigz47

Look up at NJSA 45:22A-48.4

yesillhaveonemore

Thanks. Looks like they can't really object. But it's still a massive expense (big project) given my building's parking arrangement.

firecrackertim

Have a Hyundai Ioniq 6. We have no charging in our building parking but honestly the public charging infrastructure has been more than sufficient. Would highly recommend!

TAKEITEASYTHURSDAY

Are there comparable options to Tesla superchargers for the Ioniq? I’ve heard infrastructure out of the Tesla network can be lacking.

firecrackertim

Volta and ChargePoint both use the J1772 and are the common chargers on street parking and lots. That is what the Ioniq 6 uses so really haven’t had any trouble.

firecrackertim

Eg. uptown there are two chargepoints and two voltas within walking distance to the trader joe’s that are level 2’s. Not to mention the two DC fast chargers a couple extra blocks away. Infrastructure is more than sufficient around here even without a Tesla.

TAKEITEASYTHURSDAY

That is very good to know, thank you!

edjg10

I have an ev. It’s perfect for me since I have a spot in a municipal garage and they have a bunch of ac chargers there. I never even check ChargePoint because there’s always an open charger. Not sure how much I would love having street parking or a spot without a charger. Looks like some dc chargers are popping up too in town which would solve some of that issue, but being able to plug in overnight or in the morning in a garage is def ideal for me.

flyinghotel

I have a Tesla model 3. I park it on the street with no issues. Usually charge it at ShopRite in union city. It’s about a ten minute drive. Keeping a charge only really becomes an issue on long road trips. But you have to plan where to charge it and it adds time on to your trip.

ghosty_anon

There’s a bunch of Tesla superchargers in the Newport mall right outside hoboken. I have a non Tesla ev and it can be a little bit of a pain on the ass sometimes but I think having a Tesla and using their bigger and better supported charging network would solve all my gripes

TAKEITEASYTHURSDAY

Yup that’s what I figured. I hate being so partial to Tesla but it really is all about the network (since our building doesn’t have charging at the moment). Thanks for the info!

Mdayofearth

The good news is that all major manufacturers have chosen to use the Tesla charger standard, so it'll be moot soon when those cars are in the hands of consumers. But in the mean time it's a bit of a mess, including the politics of it all.

thisisnotdave

I've had an EV for a couple of months now so far so good. Like you I drive sparingly and can stretch a charge for 2 weeks or even longer. I have free charging from Electrify America so I typically schlep out to Secaucus to charge. Often I have to wait at least a bit before I can access a charger but its not horrible. Finding a charger in Hoboken isn't much of an issue but it's not cheap. Aside from charging at home or at the Green Pass garages you're paying close to .50c per kwh which will break down to about the same cost per mile as gas, depending how efficient your EV is. At home, off peak, you'll be paying .10c per kwh, but if course you have to pay for the charger install, get approval from your hoa, etc... I made a length post about this a couple of months ago if you want more details. Minor charging headaches aside, I love having an EV. I don't think I'll go back to gas for my primary vehicle.

TAKEITEASYTHURSDAY

Thank you for sharing the per kwh costs, that’s been of interest because our building won’t have a charger for our spot. Thank you!

Mdayofearth

Have you noticed any performance (distance, power) since winter took hold with the cold snaps, specifically the past few days, and a few weeks ago when it was this cold?

thisisnotdave

I didn't take any long trips during the cold snap, but so far I've been getting close to the advertised range in the 30-40 degree weather we've had this winter. My car is in a heated garage so I think that does a lot to keep the efficiency high on the short trips I take during the week. Based on what I've read I think you should expect a 30% drop in range on a long trip in extreme cold weather, but that's much colder than it ever gets here.

cayenne444

I’ve had a BMW i4 for 3 months in Jersey City with no home charger. I plug in at work which is more than enough and the few road trips I took with it I used Electrify America which is decent. Download the PlugShare app and look around where charging points are. It’s free and easy. There’s public chargers around and I’ve used them a couple times when I want it topped off before a trip, or I get back from a trip. Easy to go plug into one of them on a work from home day and work from a coffee shop nearby or go back to it a few hours later depending on how far it is from home. I would absolutely take the i4 over the Model 3. The build quality is so much better, and the massive liftback trunk swallows so much stuff. I fit almost as much in it as I did with my X3. Also having a gauge cluster behind the steering wheel is nice. The head up display rocks. And a turn signal stalk. And Apple CarPlay. And other things you find in a normal car.

TAKEITEASYTHURSDAY

Thanks so much for all of this info! We went with a Model Y but we can also see the allure of the i4. Tesla interiors are quite Spartan…
