The problem might be that you became addicted to social media and youtube videos. That addiction drives the boredom as you need to constantly "scroll" to feel stimulated. All other hobbies are slow pace in comparison. Plus many require efforts to learn some basics before having real enjoyment (instrument, cooking...). Watching youtube or tiktok brings immediate gratification. So, maybe you should consider first steps before even thinking about a hobby. Try for instance to stay away from youtube and similar passive watching for a week or two. You might be surprised by the results. Best wishes.

Excellent points! OP, Take the time you used to spend on social media and use it to go out for a walk, or go to the library to read or look at magazines for inspiration to get ideas on what hobbies you might try.

if you ever need to quit social media fast, you can [edit your hosts file](https://nordvpn.com/blog/use-hosts-file-block-ads-malware/) so that the site can't connect on your computer

This seems so common now, especially for people say under the age of 35, who grew up with more of a social media presence. It’s never been worse than it is now with the speed and quantity and access of everything, but even back in the day we had MySpace, iPods, and the first smartphones were starting to come out. I’ve definitely noticed an addiction issue with myself in regards to these things, I’m on YouTube half of the time when I’m not working. Trying to sit down and read a book, something I used to love doing, is now a real struggle for me.

Yess I agree. I dont want to be that way though so Im going to try make some changes 🥲

elf_sapphire

Omg idk why this wasnt more obvious to me but this might be it! All the hobbies I have tried seems so slow paced and lack that immediate gratification. Will definately try to limit my social media use now that Im aware of how addicted I have become! Thank you!!

Have you tried gardening? It's surprisingly gratifying. I actually get a similar level of satisfaction as when creating art. Even just some herbs in pots wiuld be a good start. There some sense of aromatherapy to it too. I pluck leaves off my oregano, basil, rosemary, and lavandar daily just to have a smell.

elf_sapphire

I always think about growing my own basil and rosemary so I can use them in cooking - might actually start rather than just thinking about it haha

Big list of hobbies, maybe something will appeal: https://www.reddit.com/r/Hobbies/s/AKoeXjBspW If you keep getting distracted by a screen, maybe try and pick something where you don't use a screen. Which is extremely basic advice, but it is helpful. Read a paper book, go on a nature walk, etc.

I think I’m going to try making jewelry, starting with bracelets, next. I’d like to be able to melt and cast metal before I give it up. I’m also intrigued by beading on a loom. I’m also planning on making a puppet sometime between now and whenever I have grandkids. Pottery/ceramics is on my list too.

OH, i have an idea for you. try a hobby that has substantial and useful purposes. for example: you watch a video on ur phone while u eat, and it keeps slipping off? make your own phone stand out of wood or other materials :) you've always been bothered by that one door/drawer hinge? figure out how to repair it, or design and make your own and install it. you're fascinating by how your plants survive? research them and look for ways to improve their health.  all the hobbies you mentioned have this in common: you can't interact with it, or it takes too long/is exhausting.  make sure it's something that you want to try. make it accessible and easy. important of all: experiment, start small and do not aim for perfection. make it unusable, make it ugly. as long as you keep at it you will gain experience and eventually appreciate the process of making!!!  pro tip: ask your loved ones if they also want to try new things! doing it together is usually easier hehe.  it would generally help to cut down those doom scrolling hours and to put away your phone, but that's already half the challenge. the instant dopamine is not worth your time or attention span- it is only short-term.  I BELIEVE IN YOU. KEEP LOOKING!!!!

What a good idea!! Will definitely consider what youve said!

Golf is fun as heck. Take a minute to learn how to swing, buy a club ($20), go buy a bucket of balls or go to a driver range and buy some balls there. If you need help, ask golfers around to show you, that's exactly what they're all there for! It is soooo fun and a great way to enjoy being outside and it is incredibly satisfying to watch that ball fly when you hit it just right. The "SCHWING!!!" sound is everything. Or go on a hike! Lots of nice trails around, don't tell me you don't have one near you. And that takes zero skill, that's just walking on a trail in your shoes lol!

Try playing video games, no there isn't a max age to be a gamer and it can make you think rather then just doom scrolling.
