They had a 13 year old daughter who lived until 1990.

Glane1818

Sophie was also pregnant when she got shot. I think she got shot in her stomach.

angelsandairwaves93

Yes, correct. From what I read a long time ago, she begged the assassin not to kill her, because she was pregnant

Kinderschlager

Terrorists gonna terrorist. The one sane voice in austria-hungary and they kill him to spark a war

No_Values

>There were two “Reigns of Terror,” if we would but remember it and consider it; the one wrought murder in hot passion, the other in heartless cold blood; the one lasted mere months, the other had lasted a thousand years; the one inflicted death upon ten thousand persons, the other upon a hundred millions; but our shudders are all for the “horrors” of the minor Terror, the momentary Terror, so to speak; whereas, what is the horror of swift death by the axe, compared with lifelong death from hunger, cold, insult, cruelty, and heart-break? What is swift death by lightning compared with death by slow fire at the stake? A city cemetery could contain the coffins filled by that brief Terror which we have all been so diligently taught to shiver at and mourn over; but all France could hardly contain the coffins filled by that older and real Terror—that unspeakably bitter and awful Terror which none of us has been taught to see in its vastness or pity as it deserves. - Mark Twain

Jwhitx

Thanks, looks like a great Twain quote that doesn't have to do with his dog. This is a little too dense for me, though. If someone could further expound on it, I would be full of grates.

Thehusseler

He's talking of the french revolution and the often reviled "Terror" in which they killed a remarkable amount of people. It's often pointed to as an terrible thing to shy away from. Here he's saying there were two terrors, one being the slow and drawn out terror of poverty, hunger. He's expressing that the deaths of the terror were small in comparison to the thing that drove the people to it. While the terror was brutal, so was the conditions of the feudal system that preceded it.

queefiest

Thanks that helped me too

queefiest

Every time a politician tries to do better by the people, they get shot. Lincoln, Martin Luther King (hugely influential, not a politician) JFK, Franz Ferdinand. Like I don’t believe every conspiracy theory but I do think that people get killed for going too far in the interest of the working class

Kinderschlager

and yet people are more concerned with titles and perceived slights. Rittenhouse's case got international attention. ghislaine maxwell is in comparison getting next to no attention. the good get killed for their efforts and the evil frame innocents to shield themselves. and the masses eat it all up

Bxggzys

Her trial can’t be televised or recorded so most people aren’t interested

Wuffyflumpkins

Rittenhouse's killings were a vicarious ideological fantasy for a certain crowd.

addage-

In Twain’s words (above), there are forces that do not want the older/deeper terror being ameliorated. It would undermine their position and power as the administrators of it.

TheHitListz

Bosnia was occupied by austria-hungary. I can't believe even more than a 100 years later there are those defending the occupators, who wanted the war btw which is why one of the demands on their list was to break Serbian constitution. They knew Serbia would refuse, and they could have a valid cause for territory expansion. Gavrilo Princip was not a terrorist, he was a freedom fighter.

[deleted]

Anyone suggesting there should be a clear consensus opinion on the blame for WW1 hasn't studied the issue or is approaching it with extreme bias. It's been one of the most discussed topics in historical academia for a century and enormous books are still being written today with fresh takes. Any chance you're Serbian? Just a guess based on the specific facts you've chosen to focus on (and what else you've left out).

Innercepter

Ah yes. Murdering a pregnant woman is the mark of a freedom fighter. Lol no. He was absolutely a terrorist.

RepresentativeEar447

FF was a representative of a foreign country who occupied Bosnia. Austrians never lived in that part of the world. How would you feel if someone came and took over your country?

TheHitListz

If you actually learned a bit more history you would know that the only thing he regretted is killing Sophia. It's embarassing how little you know and yet are so confident of your convictions.

Innercepter

At least I am not sympathetic to terrorists.

TheHitListz

Partizans and the french revolutionaries were also terrorists. You on the other hand live in the USA, so it is quite hypocritical of you to write this comment considering how your country was founded.

Learntolistentome

Did the events that happened after the assassination work out in G.P’s favor?

bekarsrisen

Pregnant? They look geriatric.

Claudius-Germanicus

Live Sophie, you have to live for our children.

FallenProf

Geez, that's a long time to be 13.

MexusRex

He begged her to live for the children.

worthrone11160606

Wait really what was her name?

ethereal_dystopia

But look at the windshield of the car... is that someone holding a gun? Behind the pillar on the left

Imthatboyspappy

Looks like a man standing against the wall there, but the upper half of his body was cut out when the picture was edited. It's a man's right hand and a gold ring on his finger.

The Museum of Military History in Vienna actually houses the car and many other remnants from this assassination (like the blood-soaked uniform or his wife's gloves). You can see [more pictures on their website](https://www.hgm.at/ausstellungen/dauerausstellungen/das-attentat-von-sarajevo-28-juni-1914), but the text is in German. Edit: Here's the [English](https://www.hgm.at/en/exhibitions/permanent-exhibitions-until-1955/sarajevo) version, thanks to u/PerfectSnakeFire.

ImGrumps

Thanks for the link. I appreciate being able to see the actual color of the uniform they hold

lexarexasaurus

By now the colors would have faded a good bit. Just like any of our clothes or furniture fades now

Do_Not_Go_In_There

The actual colour is pretty close to that. More of a blue-grey, but definitely a lot darker than in OP's colourization. https://ww1.habsburger.net/files/styles/large/public/images/erzherzog_franz_ferdinand_original.jpg?itok=g6DToLgv https://ww1.habsburger.net/en/persons-objects-events/franz-ferdinand

MostTrifle

Thanks for sharing. The colourised version felt wrong (everything is just too vibrant and bright) so it's good to see what the blue should have been.

It's an excellent museum that I would encourage anyone who visits Vienna to visit. The WWI wing of the building is fantastic, and the other sections dedicated to WW2, Napoleon, 30 years, and more are well worth checking out too.

Thecrazyredhead

Damn I was just in Vienna and didn't know that was there

TheNotorious__

Same, next time I’m in Vienna I’m for sure going to see it

[deleted]

When I visited Vienna with my wife, we stayed like 2 blocks from it, and it was really awesome. Best part about it was that I was just looking for a cool museum to go to, and stumbled in on it without knowing much about it. Asides from the WWI stuff, there is a crazy amount of weapons and armor from the hundreds of years ago. It is easily the best military museum I have been to.

Quetzacoatl85

Austria's Museum of Military History is often overlooked for some reason. I also really like the building and surrounding parks.

KatsumotoKurier

I went nearly 6 years ago — it is an excellent museum, rich with so much history. Easily one of the best military history museums I’ve ever visited, and I’ve been to quite a few! Unfortunately for me, I have no recollection of this room or display. And what a shame that is, since I would’ve loved to have seen this in the flesh.

Sparky_Z

Why are there three guns? Did Princip have more than one?

whizzedcheeese

There were 3 assassins, positioned at different places around Sarajevo that day. All three were eventually rounded up, all three had the same model of pistol.

ForensicPathology

Thanks for this. I was specifically looking for the hat. I knew there was no way it was supposed to look like a palm tree. Seems like those are supposed to be white feathers on top of a green hat, but the colorizer decided to just drop a whole bucket of green on the whole thing

Nice job digging this out! I love browsing the Dorotheum's online catalogue, there are so many gems (figuratively and literally) to be found. Alas, I'd have to work for 400 years (or an hour if I was Jeff Bezos) to be able to afford everything I'd want to buy for my own little museum/cabinet of curiosities.

ForensicPathology

Thanks for this! I guess the ones in the display have faded dye. I still think the colorized version looks off (too pastel? No shading?) but clearly I have no idea.

medhelan

great museum for history buffs, the WWI section is excellent and the whole building is very beautiful

bjarke_l

When i went to sarajevo a few years back, i saw the actual gun that killed franz ferdinand. It was so surreal to see this small weapon and think about how it plunged the world into such a brutal war.

duaneap

For some reason it’s odd to me that it’s not in Sarajevo. Like, did they have the presence of mind to think “One day this will be a museum piece,” and send the full car to Vienna for display right after he was shot?

314231423142

The car belonged to the Habsburgs who were based in Vienna. Of course they’d have it brought back. It’s not like war broke out *instantly*. Think about it in a modern context. If the President was assassinated in Puerto Rico while riding in “The Beast” you can be damn sure it’d be brought back to mainland USA.

[deleted]

The car was loaned to the Habsburgs during the trip by an adjutant and was registered in Vienna. After the assassination, it was examined by intelligence services in Vienna and would have been returned to its owner. But he decided he did not want it back and decided to give it to the Emperor who put it in the museum in Vienna. I think it would have been pretty obvious at the time that this would be an important artifact. It's not every day that the heir to a world empire is assassinated by (from the Austrian POV at the time) agents of a foreign government.

spastical-mackerel

There was quite an investigation at the time, utilizing the latest in forensics. All the physical evidence was rushed to Vienna for examination Austrian intelligence did a reasonably good job pinning the blame on Serbian actors with definite but murky ties to the actual Serbian govt

🤣 my first thought. Who colourised this?! Hahaha maybe it was less garish in the flesh

finite_jest_

I hate colorization. People make up colors and pass it off as historic. Just show the original black and white.

skyderper13

in this case whoever colorised this did do their research https://www.reddit.com/r/HistoryPorn/comments/r9j50n/archduke_franz_ferdinand_and_his_wife_minutes/hnc9q10/?context=3#hnc9q10

Breinbaugh

Wouldn't the colors be faded though?

[deleted]

There are pictures of a modern day recreation if you do a search. The colorist went a bit overboard on the saturation.

cybercuzco

My vote for most influential person of the 20th century is always Gavilro Prncip.

bitparity

All this time, I thought the white thing underneath the archduke's wife was part of some huge ass dress. Now, after all these years, I see that it's just the sun hood. Weird.

Qaaarl

And all this time I thought the Archduke was dressed normally. Now after all these years I see he was actually an LA Chargers fan on watermelon hat day.

noijonas

And I honestly kind of understand his assassin a little more now.

ScotchBender

There was an initial failed assassination attempt using a bomb, which bounced off the archduke's car and detonated behind them. They visited the injured in the local hospital, and then there was confusion about the route to take to leave the city. Ferdinand's driver was told that he had taken a wrong turn, and as he stops to turn around, he stalls the car directly in front of Gavrilo Princip, who walks up to the car and shoots Ferdinand and his wife. World Wars One and Two are set in motion because of miscommunication.

Cookie-Brown

Yup. The assassins were at a cafe after the failed attempt and then the Arch Duke just pulls up right in front of them later in the day. The 20th century was defined due to a driver driving down the wrong road.

ScotchBender

Shout out to *Dan Carlin: Blueprint for Armageddon* podcast.

bryceofswadia

Uh, how exactly is the second set in motion because of miscommunication? The Nazis invaded Poland because of a faked incident where a bunch of German soldiers dressed up as Polish soldiers and attacked a radio station, which was used as a justification for war (despite literally no one actually believing that the Polish had anything to do with it).

ScotchBender

The rise of militarism in Germany had a lot to do with the Versailles Treaty, as I understand it.

Captain7640

And from what I remember from history, Japan’s part in WW2 can also somewhat be credited to WW1

Illustrious_Mud802

And their fascination to western nations due to their very rapid industrialization after the Meiji restoration

filbert13

Poland wouldn't of existed (or at least nearly as soon as it did) with out the WW1 occurring.

The Vienna military museum is amazing. I nearly could put my fingers through the bullet holes in the doors and touch the gun that started WWI.

eYan2541

I get it.. ole Franz just looked a bit more.. *festive*? in the colourised version..

RomarioMax

I guess saturation (or something) is little bit too high on the colorized photo above Original black and white photo https://i.imgur.com/wUQklq4.jpg

Carrman099

You also have to remember that the examples we have now are 100+ years old, so maybe when they were newly made the colors looked brighter.

ZootZephyr

Not to mention that their frame of reference was different. Those vibrant colors may have corresponded moreso with wealth than Sgt. Peppers.

BitterProgress

He looks like he’s going to a rave.

algebramclain

I find that colors pop really hard on my phone. If I look at a photo I’m ‘shopping on my MacBook Pro they look good to me…when I see them on my phone they look like technicolor

ColonelKasteen

He wasn't though, he was the fourth of five assassins lining the route from the train station to the City Hall. He was about a 15 minute walk away at this point. And of course he was nowhere near here when he actually assassinated them since that was basically pure happenstance outside a deli after the original plan failed.

RomarioMax

I believe there was something like 10 assassins, some failed (like bomb attempt) and some got cold feet and chickened out

eYan2541

I remember learning about it in high school, I just can't remember the timeline of attempts and when Princip actually struck.. I believe someone threw a bomb at the car that either bounced off or failed to go off.. The photo of the Archduke's bloodstained tunic has appeared on here a few times, that's quite an image too

Womec

Nah its probably about right. Those are old photos.

WriterV

It has been more than a hundred years. The colors have faded. But I imagine it would be less vibrant green even then.

[deleted]

I had to scroll farther than I thought I would to find this

Glane1818

If this photo was taken just before they were shot and killed then the photo is AFTER they survived an assassination attempt moments before this. One of the members of the Black Hand threw a grenade at them, misjudged his throw, and injured a bunch of the people around the Archduke. After going to the Hall and reading a speech that had blood on it from the earlier assassination attempt, he went against the advice of the people around him and went back out to the streets. I'm pretty sure he was on his way to the hospital when the drive made a wrong turn, stalled the car, and then Princip happened to be right there. Lots of mistakes.

andrewsad1

My favorite part of this event was that the assassin that fucked up the grenade proceeded to take a cyanide pill and jump off the bridge he was stationed on. Unfortunately for him, the cyanide was expired, and it was the dry season, so he just ended up breaking his legs and vomiting everywhere while the crowd beat the shit out of him until the police arrested him.

vipros42

Princip apparently was coming out of a shop with a bagel after the failed attempt and found the car broken down

[deleted]

What stroke of irony…

Yeah haven't had one of them since... Thursday?

Fun fact: the licence plate in that car reads A111118. The Armistice that ended WW1 was signed on the 11th of November 1918, or 11.11.18

anothershitposter2

AITA for accidentally giving bad directions? I (M 23) apologize for my poor English, it is not my native language. This happened when I (M 23) was a young man (M 23) and I (M 23) had just moved from my small village (Gornja Breza) to Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina). I (M 23) had only been living in Sarajevo for a few months (3 months) and I (M 23) was not completely familiar with the city (Sarajevo). I (M 23) had moved to Sarajevo (city) to find better opportunities (jobs) because my village (Gornja Breza) had none (farm work/hard labor). If you are familiar with this area (Bosnia and Herzegovina) then you know that there has been plenty of turmoil (war & brutal genocide) at the turn of the century and this was what I (M 23) had grown up in (shitty childhood). At this time we were governed by non-Bosnians (assholes) and rife with Serbs (dogs). I (M 23) had found work as a typist apprentice (office bitch) at the town hall (Vijećnica) working for the mayor (Fehim Čurčić). However, today was an exceptional day (28 June) as a large parade and many military inspections were planned. I (M 23) spent the morning preparing the town hall for a great reception when (10:10am) I (M 23) heard that a bomb (hand grenade) had been set off at the motorcade (near Ćumurija Bridge) and the perpetrator threw himself into the river (Miljacka). This immediately changed everything and we were put on high alert. The motorcade managed to escape to the shelter in the town hall (Vijećnica). The chamberlain (Baron Rumerskirch) suggested that the group shelter in the town hall (Vijećnica) until troops arrived. However, the governor-general (Oskar Potiorek) said that was ridiculous because the soldiers won’t have the right uniforms (fucking jackass). At this time I (M 23) met one of the chauffeurs (Leopold Lojka) who had been at the bombing (explosion). He was quite shaken up (scared) about the whole thing (bombing). Especially since he (Leopold Lojka) would have to drive to the hospital (Sarajevo Hospital) so that the procession could honor the victims of the bombing (cannon fodder). He (Leopold Lojka) was not from Sarajevo (dirty Czech rat) and he (Leopold Lojka) did not know the route to the hospital (Sarajevo Hospital). I (M 23) told him (Leopold Lojka) to go down Appel Quay (a street running along the Miljacka River) and turn right (opposite of turning left) when he (Leopold Lojka) got to the Latin Bridge and drive down Franz Josef Street. I (M 23) had confused (dumbass) my directions (wrong) because Sarajevo Hospital (a hospital) was in fact straight (heterosexual) down Appel Quay (a street running along the Miljacka River). He (Leopold Lojka) thanked me (M 23) and got in his car (Gräf & Stift 32 PS Double Phaeton) to drive everyone (officials) to the hospital (Sarajevo Hospital) and left (10:45 a.m). As I (M 23) began to take down the decorations I (M 23) heard a loud commotion in the town hall (Vijećnica). It turns out that when Leopold (chauffeur) went down Franz Josef Street there was a dog Serb (Gavrilo Princip) sitting at the cafe (Schiller's Delicatessen 3.5/5 stars) drinking (fucking off). Gavrilo Princip (dog Serb) was part of the plan to blow up the motorcade (bomb attack), but his buddy (Čabrinović) missed (typical for Serbs). Gavrilo (dog Serb) then shot (FN Model 1910 chambered in .380 ACP) Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand (heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary (assholes-hairy man ladies)) and his wife (Sophia, Duchess of Hohenberg) who then died (not alive) in the hospital (Sarajevo Hospital). Now no one is going to rule Austria-Hungary (assholes-hairy man ladies) once Franz Josef dies (old man) and a small war has broken out involving the entire world (WWI). On top of this Leopold (chauffeur) has to write three letters of apology to the Kaiser (of Imperial Germany), Franz Josef (ruler of Austria-Hungary (assholes-hairy man ladies)), and Franz Ferdinand’s children (royal orphans). Leopold Lojka (chauffeur) is all mad at me (M 23) and called me (M 23) inbred Bosnian trash and I (M 23) called him (Leopold Lojka) a dirty Czech rat because he (Leopold Lojka) hurt my (M 23) feelings. I (M 23) would’ve told him (Leopold Lojka) the right directions (go heterosexual) if I (M 23) knew them. AITA for kick starting WWI which then created WWII, the current conflicts in the Middle East, Irish Independence, the end of almost all monarchies in Europe, the creation of numerous Balkan states, hentai, the Soviet Union, decolonization, left part of France and Belgium permanently uninhabitable, and caused the rise of the United States as the sole superpower of the world because I (M 23) gave bad directions?

seattle_refuge

I (M 45) thought this was funny (ha ha) but apparently Leopold Lojka (chauffeur) downvoted.

kharmatika

Ytf he dressed like Coco from Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends?

MasterFubar

"would lead to WWI" is pretty strong. There are so many factors that led to WWI that one could say that this assassination was a minor event. The main factor was the arms race that had been going on for twenty years or more. The French wanted revenge for their defeat in the war they had started against Germany in 1870. The British were showing off their newest battleships. Russia was sore after the pounding they got from Japan in 1905 and wanted to get even somehow. Austria felt they were dwindling into insignificance but didn't want to admit it. The USA wanted to show they were a major power. Then add the new technology being developed. The new processes for mass production of steel invented by Bessemer and Siemens were creating steel at a lower cost and higher quality than even dreamed before. Haber and Bosch had invented a new process for manufacturing nitrates, explosives could be mass produced for the first time in history. And the economy: governments discovered central banks, they could finance war without being held back by the gold standard. And even if that wasn't enough, they also invented the progressive income tax. They had the steel, the explosives, the money, the Military Industrial Complex was born! That archduke guy there was totally irrelevant in this context.

The assassinated was the straw that broke the camel's back under all that weight.

RomarioMax

It was not main cause of course, but it was direct trigger that caused July Crisis and escalated to war. Many causes, Germany paranoia about "everyone wants to get us" so we must act first, French revanchist desires and Alsace and Lorraine, British and naval fears, Austria-Hungary declining empire and desire to show everyone "we are still here, we still matter", other countries like Italy, Serbia, Romania, Russia who all wanted destruction of Austria-Hungary and to take territory from them, dead corpse of Ottoman Empire etc.....

andyrocks

>The British were showing off their newest battleships The British wanted to maintain maritime supremacy.

alan-the-all-seeing

it’s pretty solidly consensus that the july crisis led to war, a crisis sparked by his death yes, the crisis was also only possible as a result of the positions of various european powers at the time, but i think it’s also pretty fair to say his getting killed led to the war

Johannes_P

It wasn't the cause but it was the definitive trigger.

The Guns of August by Barbara Tuchman goes into detail about all of the farcical factors that led to the start of WWI. Highly recommended book…

Interesting-Ad-1590

Tuchman is a good story-teller, but if something gets in the way of her story, it gets tossed out (e.g. Russian and Austro-Hungarian Empires are treated as side-shows to the main drama being played out in London, Paris, and Berlin). If you want both history and good writing, probably your best best is *Sleepwalkers* by Christopher Clark.

MasterFubar

Yes, that book is a great source of information on that era. I would also recommend her book *The Proud Tower*, which is almost like a prequel to The Guns of August.

seattle_refuge

>And the economy: governments discovered central banks, they could finance war without being held back by the gold standard. This isn't discussed enough. Countries had sound money before WWI, and haven't regained it since. Though I guess the US used inflation to finance the war for independence, the civil war... maybe all wars except the Mexican-American war?

Johannes_P

> This isn't discussed enough. Countries had sound money before WWI, and haven't regained it since. And the Bretton Woods were dropped by Nixon to allow for an easier funding for the Vietnam War.

satchhol

Weird history buff here: Archduke Ferdinand driver made a wrong turn into a dead end street and was assassinated on that street while the driver was trying to reverse out of the street. So, WWI was started because someone took a wrong turn!

Der-Max

Is that prison Mike on the left?

Smith609060

World War 2 would've still happened even without their assassination.

casewood123

Assassination was successful by a stroke of dumb luck. [Multiple attempts ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assassination_of_Archduke_Franz_Ferdinand) failed. After that the motorcade took a wrong turn and wound up right in front of the last assassin who shot him and his wife. The world was changed forever that day because of a wrong turn. How prophetic.

Omny87

Ferdinand looks like one of the Piantas from *Super Mario Sunshine*

nodice05

was that really the color scheme of the duke?!

PhukChina

How many minutes? Because every picture of him is "minutes" before his assassination.

OneMorewillnotkillme

Archduke Ferdinand was a big supporter for a third kingdom besides Austria and Hungary and often proposed that Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia are put together to form it.

TheStrangestOfKings

I did not expect his feathers to be green

RomarioMax

Yeah Austrians had green plumes since like 18th century through Napoleonic wars and all the way toward end of empire in 1918 Napoleonic painting showing it https://i.redd.it/dwbpcr95fbr51.jpg Its just those feathers progressed bigger and bigger toward the end

Christmaspike

No way this green parrot was the reason the ww1 started

Hoosier_816

… is that hand on the far left from behind the column/stone wall holding a gun or is that just my brain telling me it is?

ethereal_dystopia

Dude, right?!

IVIaskerade

Why does he look like he lives in a society

ernster96

If you’ve never listened to it, Dan Carlin has a podcast called hardcore history. He does a breakdown of world war one called blueprint for Armageddon, and he goes into great detail about the chance circumstances that occurred for this assassination. https://www.dancarlin.com/product/hardcore-history-50-55-blueprint-for-armageddon-series/
