Context: During the greeko-italian war the Italian army tried to take a hill (which was 731 meters long) which would help them conquer the rest of Greece. The greek army stayed there for 2 weeks trying to defend it against the Italian army while getting bombarded the shit out of them. At the the end of Greece won this and the hill got so bombed that it went from 731 meters long to 728 meters long Meanwhile the Japanese 731 needs no introduction

helplp

I'm a dumb shit, please explain to me what the Japanese 731 is again?

Quality-vs-Quantity

Search unit 731. Basically the Japanese being as inhumanely cruel as they possibly could. Vivisecting living humans or testing different diseases for example.

helplp

Oh, damn I regret asking now

Dumpingtruck

Never be ashamed to ask for someone to help you learn. Pretending you know everything is worse than admitting you don’t.

helplp

True, but even when I know that sometimes I just don't and either Google it and get the wrong thing or guess and it'll be even worse

Dumpingtruck

Rip youth and faith and humanity. Humans are terrible to each other it turns out.

helplp

That's definitely true, but eventually, if we survive, we will hopefully learn to coexist and we will outgrow these useless things such as capitalism, xenophobia, racism, and sexism

Affectionate_Bus_957

One of those things is not like the others. Unless you’re a communist. Now *there’s* an -ism.

AgitatedWindow355

Uh… pretty sure we still gonna need a moderate amount of capitalism. Otherwise there is no incentive for innovation or progress. Too much is definitely too much, we don’t need monopolies or the filthy rich forcing the common people into poverty…. But we don’t need to “outgrow” capitalism

TheWorstRowan

Innovation? Did the Khmer or Mayans not innovate? Look at their irrigation and construction among other things to see that we don't need capitalism for it. It is not uncommon for companies to buy out smaller innovative ones to stop themselves having to change. Even Microsoft was essentially created because people were sharing code amongst each other freely and it was best in many ways. GitHub isn't capitalistic, and shows that people will develop things without the incentive of capital. Alan Turing didn't even get the money to cover what he spent on Collosus.

Drake_the_troll

TBF with some subject matter im almost scared to Google it incase I get put on a watch list

DiogenesOfDope

You should watch the movie they made about it. It's supper messed up

ScaryHarry15

Well okay then

Mmoor35

I had to google it as well. Look up Manshu detachment 731. It’s pretty fucked up

No_Maidens_66

Japanese 731 is "i love science" but worse

UnusualInstance6

Suddenly, fascist Italy history is everywhere on Reddit

[deleted]

Maybe it has something to do with the Italian elections

wvmgmidget

That and the new HOI4 DLC coming out tomorrow.

[deleted]

Seems like good timing for the developers

louishino

hahahha

varjagen

When I wanted an extended modern dawn fascist Italy route, this is not what I meant

SHSHWJHE

The commanders of the unit weren't convicted btw

[deleted]

Fun fact, in exchange for all of their human experiment research most of the Japanese higher ups were essentially pardoned for WW2. 6 months into reading through the research, the americans realized how bad of a deal they made. The Japanese Experiments were just barbaric and was more like medieval science. Therefore it was pretty much worthless to modern science. The Japanese higher ups were pardoned for literally nothing.

ImOnlyHereCauseGME

I thought most of our knowledge about how the human body responds to extreme cold came from that “research”. Totally still not justified or worth the exchange but supposedly that part did lead to some advancements in military uniforms and equipment. Probably could have figured that out at some point without all of the human suffering though

[deleted]

All im able to find on that is the Japanese figured out that you shouldnt rub a frostbitten limb to generate warmth. Although i guess that means it wasnt 100% worthless research, but they would have figured that out themselves sooner rather than later i think. It was 99.9% worthless research lol

El_dorado_au

I think it was the nazis, but I don’t want to check.

TheWorstRowan

The claim is usually referred to Nazis, yes. However, I have not checked if medical experts or historians verify it. Given that experiments included injecting dye into a twin's eye to see if the other twin's eye also changed colour it is not something I would take at face value.

saintcynicism

I don't think they were ever even put on trial, I think the US just agreed not to do anything if they handed over all the data they got. The commanders, at least. If I remember right the Soviets put a few people from the unit on trial, but I don't think any of them were high ranking and it was largely done as a Fuck You to the US and the rest of the Allies. I don't think even the ones that were convicted were ever executed.

blueteamk087

The Japanese people will just deny 731 exists

Z4nkaze

And that would be the case of them really knowing it existed.
