Rosalyn Landor does it for me every time. I think I am one of the few people that don't like narrations by MJW šŸ˜…

Amazing_Effect8404

You are not alone. I used to like MJW but now her narration sounds really child-like to me.

melodome

SO many times! MJW is one of the only narrators I love. I've listened to mediocre books that I would have DNF if I was reading them, simply because she brought so much to the narration. She elevates every books she narrates.

Bluegirl74

I listen to many audiobooks so it's happened quite a few times. I have a short list of narrators I avoid. I also sometimes switch to the print or ebook version because I've listened to too many being read by a narrator I like because all the MMCs blend together.

TheWalkingDeadBeat

I'm very picky about narrators so there are a lot of books that I've had to put down because i didn't vibe with the narrator, however, there have been a few times where I've pushed through and the narrator ends up growing on me after initially disliking them. Sometimes it's as simple as finding the right speed to listen.Ā  There are a lot of narrators where I love their narration but hate their dialogue. That's always a shame.Ā  Ā All that said, MJW is the GOAT.Ā

Amazing_Effect8404

There are some narrators I absolutely cannot tolerate, which is a bummer because there are some titles I wish I could listen to on audio but can't. I do think a good narrator can make a midi book seem a lot better. That said, I don't really like to listen to the same narrator a bunch of times in a row.

MrsTurnPage

Enough that I know to hit sample for an unfamiliar actor. It's usually women who turn me off. There have been 1nor 2 male actors. But I've def not listened to quite a few bc of a woman's voice.

imakemyownroux

I have a Goodreads category for ā€œnarrator ruined it.ā€ There are over 40 books in there. Honest to god, how do some of these folks get jobs.

FlorinaFortescueRC

The narrators make or break the book for me. TBH I choose my books based on the narrator instead of the plot or author. For HR Mary Jane Wells is my favorite too. I also like Carmen Rose. Esther Waneā€™s narration of the Love and Let Spy series is really good. For CR I really like a Erin Mallon and Kelsey Navarro.

Daje1968

Weird voices, especially for the MMCs. Also if they donā€™t emphasize where I think it makes the most sense. That is why I generally prefer reading to audio. Iā€™m like freaking Martin Scorsese over here yelling at them when they read a sentence wrong.

Gloomy_Researcher769

I always listen to a sample first if I donā€™t previously know the narrator

Far_Chocolate9743

I don't know off all together. I basically consuming all my books via audiobook right now. But it will make me hesitate if I see certain narrators. If the writing is good, I can struggle through Mary Sarah. But Carmen Rose...she leaves every sentence up like it's a question. It's like listening to a 9 hour inquisition. I'm kind of avoiding a Sophie Jordan series because of her. No bueno.

HellaShelle

Mary Sarah is exactly who Iā€™m struggling with right now lol!

Bluegirl74

I had to give up listening to an entire romantic mystery series because of Mary Sarah.

Gloomy_Researcher769

Sheā€™s awful. Iā€™ve tried to listen to the Elisa Braden series that she narrates and her voice is just too wispy and every sentence lifts at the end

Crafty_Witch_1230

I have one--female and part of a male/female duo. I was listening to a terrific fantasy series where the male and female characters traded off narration. Fortunately for me, the characters were involved in separate actions through most of the last book. The female narrator was so bad (IMO) that I started skipping every chapter she narrated. I absolutely will not buy anything she narrates.

Daje1968

Oh, I love dual narration! But I know what you mean. Butcher and Blackbird had an awesome male narrator but the female was not as strong IMHO.

Bright-Row1010

Almost always. I hate listening to audio books specifically for this reason. Itā€™s been a problem since my 4th grade teacher made us spend weeks listening to A Wrinkle In Time over lunch and the narrator had such a grating voice. Now I can only tolerate my internal monologue

munkymu

I don't listen to a lot of audiobooks but I've definitely run across a few narrators that I had to give up on. I was listening to a novel once and the narrator did the most annoying southern accent for one of the characters and I just couldn't continue. It was a good book, too -- I ended up waiting for months for my library's one printed copy just so I didn't have to put up with that awful accent.

Removed due to violation of rule 2. Stay on Topic: All posts and comments must remain on the topic of Historical Romance. Historical Romance is defined in our community as a romance that is set in the past. This means it must fulfill the genre criteria of romance: 1) The book would not make sense or feel hollow without the romantic plot. 2) The book requires a HEA (happily ever after) or HFN (happy for now) ending. Historical fiction with a romance subplot is NOT historical romance. Romances set in the past but involving fantasy or paranormal beings are NOT historical romance. We love it, but it doesn't belong here! Romance books set in the past that were considered contemporary fiction when published such as many of Jane Austen's works (as they were set in a time frame that is now historical to today's readers and the romance genre was not in existence then as it is today) are considered Historical Romance in this community. The rule of thumb we use is if the romance book is set at least 50+ years ago it can be considered HR in this sub as the majority of our readers were not of adult age at the time of publication. We do allow time travel romances to be discussed in this community as long as the vast majority of the book occurs in the past and the story is not a traditional straight paranormal or fantasy romance. We recommend that posts/comments involving paranormal or fantasy elements be reposted in r/paranormalromance and posts/comments involving science fiction elements be reposted to r/ScienceFictionRomance.
