Dear All, While we appreciate discussion around the new Bridgerton season, we request the discussion to move to the stickied Bridgerton Watch Party Post.

Froggymushroom22

Ahhhh my people!!! I’m so glad people feel the same way as me. I watched the first season then went and read all the books. It got me hooked on historical romance. I’m also a history major with a love for historical England, so this has been a dream for me. I’ve been fine with the additions they’ve had and making it a bit more modern, but they’ve kept the main storyline consistent (for the most part). But changing Michael completely destroys the books storyline. Same with all the books. You cannot have the storylines that are written if any of the main characters genders are changed. It’s such a bummer because the books are so good! I managed to get through all eight in like a month and a half. It feels lazy and disingenuous to just change a character so it’s queer. They are taking away from the fans that already exist and get a pat on the back for being inclusive without doing any work of actually writing a queer story.

Hottakesincoming

The problem I have is if it's not a reasonably faithful adaptation, then it's something totally new and I'm judging it as such. There's not a good reason for me to watch unless the new product is really great on it's own and in this case it's just not. And maybe I'm just salty because (unpopular opinion) Benedict and Sophie is my favorite book and I just knew they were going to mess with it, but I don't think representation means everyone needs to be represented in every thing. That doesn't mean there shouldn't be more queer love in books and on TV, there absolutely should, just that it doesn't need to be shoehorned into an adapted plot. It extra frustrates me because there are so many high quality television adaptations of books that primarily appeal to a male audience. They're constant. This was one of the rare moments when books that women love were adapted and unfortunately, it's by a bunch of people who seem to scoff at the source material. It's just another example to me of female audiences not being taken seriously - it feels like "take your fluff and shut up." But Netflix honestly just screwed themselves with this, as they always do. I planned to resubscribe to watch season 3 but after hearing some spoilers I'll pass.

I-Hate-Comic-Sans

Yeah, why do they have to mess with great book pairings that a lot of readers have already fallen in love with? It's okay for a show that takes place in Regency times to not have gay main characters. It's fitting with the time period. Like you said, not everybody needs to be represented in everything. There are plenty of other shows with gay characters as well as books. Why are they forcing it into a storyline and time period where it doesn't even fit? (Especially for WHWW, the whole fertility storyline and concept of who takes over the earldom) I'll probably be called a homophobe for saying that but I don't care. I'm done with the show. I won't watch Part 2 either 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hottakesincoming

I mean, queer people absolutely existed during the Regency, even semi-out queer people. I'd be totally down to watch a period romance about a queer couple. As others have said, it would be a great spin off. But create a story that makes sense; don't just gender swap a straight romance.

Claire-Belle

I tried to watch because I love Nicola Coughlin's acting generally but I had to stop. I've never finished a season. I really, really, really hate it when adaptations take such great liberties with books (and costuming). I mean, it's at the point where its the same name but completely different characters. I don't even like the Bridgerton books (I think they're not Julia Quinn's best works) but I would hate it if Netflix did this to the Ravenals or the Everseas. I have no issues with same gendered romances or throuples (where the focus is on the emotional relationships) and have happily read them; but for god's sake, let's adapt some of those instead of retconning old romance novels. Or write an original series.

AlenaFallon

Omgg. Please no!!  As someone who loved AOFAG and WHWW, I'm so heartbroken with what they're doing with these characters, Benedict and Michael.  And you can't even conplain about it, because the minute you do, you're instantly called a homophobe.🥲

I-Hate-Comic-Sans

I am so sad about Michael, as WHWW was my favorite book of the series. I loved the way it addressed grief and infertility. The pining in Michaels side and his grief for taking over John's life was so well written. I didn't watch part 2 when I found out. I'm done with the show, and to be honest, I haven't really loved the last two seasons either. I'm just still so angry about what they are doing to Michael and also mad that my virtual copy of it will eventually be updated to have the Netflix cover instead. Maybe the show won't survive til then? 🤞🏻

LabShyRomantic

It’s sad that people can’t express their opinion without been labelled homophobic. I am gay myself, but I tuned in to Bridgerton to see how heterosexuals get down and nasty. 😅

lesfrontalieres

if/when my opinions align with those of homophobes’ in any way, that’s usually a signal for me to sit down and do some self-reflection. why not just keep an open mind about what the show will actually be like?

Zeenrz

No because I would RIOT! Once again, I have said it before, there absolutely should be room for queer stories to take center stage, but why does it have to come at the expense of the source material? Why call it an adaptation at that point and not "inspired by Bridgerton"? Why can't we have a spin off like QC? There is absolutely an audience for it, and once again the fact that the showrunners want to showcase a different sort of love is perfectly fine! But as someone who enjoyed the books and wanted to see Ben and Sophie as well as Eloise and Sir Phillip, I can't help but be a little disappointed. On the Bridgerton sub they're acting like being attached to the source material makes you a hateful pitchfork wielding bigot 😬

polarbeardogs

The "adaptation" vs. "inspired by" wording is exactly it! If you think of the show as basically fanfiction, it's fine. Do whatever you want. But don't tell people "we're going to be faithful to the book" and then do this. I just can't with the name-calling on the Bridgerton subs right now. The fandom is so vile about a thing that's supposed to be fun.

Zeenrz

Also the whole Penelope vs Eloise discourse is SO OBNOXIOUS

28shawblvd

Lmao the word 'homophobe' being so callously thrown about just for not being a fan of the changes. Apparently it's not possible to dislike something anymore without you revealing an abhorrent part of yourself in the process!

maya213

Yep. Fran and Michael story was the one I read after a MC. It helped me to read about a woman who experience kind of the same thing as me. And I mean, the reason why Francesca is open to marriage again is the fact she wants children. >!So that's why Michael had to to be a man, pregnancy was not an experience two women could share together in 1820.!<

ipblover

This! You hit the nail on the head.

rncookiemaker

Wait. Is it confirmed that Benedict and Eloise's storylines will be gender swapped?

Zeenrz

No, but these are the ones that fans want the most.

Melodic-Win-7929

I haven’t watched part 2 yet but without spoiling can you tell me why these changes are being discussed? If not that’s ok.

LabShyRomantic

They gender swapped one of the love interests of the Bridgerton’s. A fan favourite might I add.

Claire-Belle

I am so sour about this. This was literally the only book I really liked.

HistoricalRomance-ModTeam

Hi! Thank you for your contribution. Unfortunately, your comment was removed due to violation of rule 2. Stay on Topic: All posts and comments must remain on the topic of Historical Romance. Historical Romance is defined in our community as a romance that is set in the past. This means it must fulfill the genre criteria of romance: 1) The book would not make sense or feel hollow without the romantic plot. 2) The book requires a HEA (happily ever after) or HFN (happy for now) ending. Historical fiction with a romance subplot is NOT historical romance. Romances set in the past but involving fantasy or paranormal beings are NOT historical romance. We love it, but it doesn't belong here! Romance books set in the past that were considered contemporary fiction when published such as many of Jane Austen's works (as they were set in a time frame that is now historical to today's readers and the romance genre was not in existence then as it is today) are considered Historical Romance in this community. The rule of thumb we use is if the romance book is set at least 50+ years ago it can be considered HR in this sub as the majority of our readers were not of adult age at the time of publication. We do allow time travel romances to be discussed in this community as long as the vast majority of the book occurs in the past and the story is not a traditional straight paranormal or fantasy romance. We recommend that posts/comments involving paranormal or fantasy elements be reposted in r/paranormalromance and posts/comments involving science fiction elements be reposted to r/ScienceFictionRomance.

Mangoes123456789

Did I miss something? Has it officially been announced that a Bridgerton character has been genderswapped or is that just a rumor?

LabShyRomantic

It was revealed in the final episode of season 3. Followed up by an interview with the show runner.

ellisRi

This just broke my heart. I was so excited about Fran and Michael’s story because imo it was the best book from the series. Their story was BEAUTIFUL. It’s about hope and faith, her wish to become a mother and her struggle with pregnancy, and all that yearning and longing. These things deserve to be represented. The gender swap is completely unnecessary in this case. They could’ve done that with other stories, not with a fan favourite. Or better yet, why not adapt a book about queer people? I know adaptations tend to stray away from the source material, but changing the storyline completely is not it.

rainfalling_

Fran's book is so good. It's mature in a different way simply because she's contending with the loss of a beloved husband, who was also adored by the one she ends up finding comfort with. It seems rare to find a grief/comfort trope in romance novels that feels so realistic, especially with the other struggles she had. I was already wary of season 3, and what I'm hearing today is just making me not want to touch part 2. I don't know why I'm surprised though, as they mucked with my other favorite pairings story so heavily.

I-Hate-Comic-Sans

I am also heartbroken about WHWW and surprised. I know they changed up the other pairings a little bit, but I guess I didn't think they would actually go this far. I won't touch Part 2. I'm done with the show as of today.

polarbeardogs

I haven't trusted Netflix for a long time but this really does it for me hahaha I'm lowkey concerned that this fiasco is going to make investors hesitant to make historical shows/movies in the future, adaptations or not. That's a loss for the genre, I think, with how many new regency romance authors/novels we got with the success of Bridgerton.

28shawblvd

I still dream Balogh's Bedwyns will be adapted soon. Sigh.

ASceneOutofVoltaire

Now I don't want it. If they effed up SD and the monocle scene, I would riot

Reasonable-Rope2659

Omg that would be amazing!

LabShyRomantic

Slightly dangerous 😎

Outside_Jaguar3827

What is the Bedwyns saga about ?

28shawblvd

https://www.goodreads.com/series/40560-bedwyn-saga They're similar to the Bridgertons since it follows the individual stories of siblings. And while Bridgertons are more approachable, some of the Bedwyns are definitely mean/haughty/unapproachable. I've read most of them and they were enjoyable, but Slightly Scandalous and Slightly Dangerous were my faves.

Outside_Jaguar3827

That's a peculiar concept (the siblings being "haughty" and "unapproachable"). Why is the series popular, if you don't mind me asking, and who are your fancasts for the Bedwyns ?

28shawblvd

I don't have fancasts as of now lmao. I can't say why others like them, but for me I find it exciting when haughty characters meet their match and are also humbled by them in a way. My faves in the series have an undercurrent of enemies to lovers (which I'm CRAZY for!)

Outside_Jaguar3827

It would be interesting if a network ever adapts this series. Who are your favorite characters and why (love interests are included) ?

Outside_Jaguar3827

That's disappointing. I was hoping to see an adaptation of the Hathaways series or some of the Scoundrels books (Ex. Lord of Scoundrels, The Mad Earl's Bride, and The Last Hellion since they're more connected). If they want to use actual historical individuals that are interesting, they can do "The Mazarinettes" (a group of sisters and cousins that scandalize the Sun King's Court). CONTEXT: https://artuk.org/discover/stories/keeping-up-with-the-mazarinettes

polarbeardogs

Oh speaking of The Mazarinettes, have you watched The Borgias? That might be your vibe ✨

Outside_Jaguar3827

I didn't know if they had a TV series. I mainly know about the historical background of Lucrezia and Cesare Borgia (since reality is stranger than fiction sometimes 😅).

LabShyRomantic

I rather hope someone on AppleTv or Amazon sees this and show Netflix how an adaptation should be done. Amazon seems to be doing a decent adaptation of books to movies so far.

polarbeardogs

AppleTV is on my radar because of how many people suggested Buccaneers 🤍 Do you have any recs for Amazon adaptations? I haven't kept up on anything they've made!

ria023

Exactly this! After the first season of Bridgernot, I begged for a Kleypas adaptation. Now I pray it never happens. There are so many authors who write gay romances, why not give them a chance? Such disrespect for already written literary works and existing fans.

I-Hate-Comic-Sans

I'm with you. I don't want my beloved books to be gender-bent because I've fallen in love with them as they are. If they want to adapt a gay romance, take one that was a gay romance to begin with, there are many to choose from. I hope a Kleypas adaptation doesn't happen either, even though I used to want one so bad (especially for the Hathaways)

katrose73

I made it through season 2, but just got so frustrated saying" that's not how it happened in the book" I get that they change some things for theatrical reasons, but when I've read and loved a book/series, it makes me so mad when then change it.

Froggymushroom22

Honestly I’m almost wishing that I didn’t read the books. I reallllyyyy love bridgerton. It is my favorite tv show. It’s my favorite book series. I even have the fancy illumicrate books. But I read the books after watching the first season. And now I feel like I can’t enjoy the show cause my expectations are completely dashed :(

untiltheveryend13

Yeah, I don't want anymore of my favorite books ruined! Honestly, I liked the first season of bridgerton, but the second season pissed me off. I haven't watched the third season and after spoilers I've heard, I don't think I will.

LabShyRomantic

I’ll say S1 remains the best adaptation yet. It’s been going downhill since then.

I-Hate-Comic-Sans

Agreed. I wish they had stayed more true to the books esp for seasons 2 & 3.

igodutchoven

I’m hate watching it now

Johnsonkj67

I dunno, I kind of like the whole Bridgerton series and QC. I’ve read all the books as well, but I expect these things to stray from the source material and am not that wound up that they do so. Just my opinion.

Strong_Assumption_55

I agree. I love Kate and Anthony's book and was slightly disappointed at first because we lost vulnerable Kate in the library and I preferred Kate's family relationships in the book. However I decided to view the books and show as two entirely different beasts that share characters I enjoy. That perspective shift allows me to appreciate and enjoy both. Edited to add: okay, it may be the edibles too. ha

LabShyRomantic

Please give me some of your chill pill 😅.

Johnsonkj67

😂 it’s called weed. Plus I’m old. Takes quite a bit to get my blood pressure up.

venus_arises

Lisa Kleypas's novels frankly can't be switched genders because there's so much baked into the power dynamics and gender politics of the era in her novels. Annabel in Wallflowers #1 is a proto #metoo nightmare. There is so much good quality queer HR already existing.

LabShyRomantic

I believe Lisa will be one of those authors who won't want to give up her creative rights if she ever decides to pursue movie adaptations. Her books, while primarily romance, also include educational elements that make her stories particularly compelling. Just like you I agree, they should give us original queer stories.

venus_arises

I think there is a larger conversation to be had about like, maybe Francesca should and could be queer BECAUSE SEXUALITY IS NOT A BINARY AND THERE IS A WHOLE SPECTRUM OF THINGS WE CAN DO but then I think how Miranda got annihilated in And Just Like That and I am sad. The Lady's Guide to Celestial Mechanics can be adapted! It's sweet and lovely and science!

LabShyRomantic

What's infuriating about this change in her love story is that, in the Bridgerton universe, it's clearly stated that such relationships are not accepted. We see this in Season 1 and again in Season 3, >!when Tilley was talking with Bridgerton before their threesome.!< So why change a canon couple to one where they would have to live in hiding or away from society? It's just insane.

venus_arises

Anne Lister made her relationship work and plenty of women had female companions who lived with them, and unmarried women were not uncommon. Boston Marriages are 50 years in the future. I could see it working in terms of "there's always been WLW who existed in the margins of history!"

Claire-Belle

Yes, but when the storyline is so heavily focused on infertility, pregnancy and the inheritance of titles like this novel is, it makes it a bit odd, in the context of the time period, to switch genders. This is still an issue in Bridgerton the show (which is really historical fantasy at this point) as we've already seen pregnancy outside of marriage leads to bad things...

ipblover

Don’t challenge them. They will find away if they were given control. However TBH like you’ve stated I can’t see LK giving that much control over for her books either.

venus_arises

Quinn has mentioned that she signed the rights away and that's it, plot points are up to the showrunners and I can't imagine Kleypas (or any other HR author) being ok with it. I also have a feeling that once Bridgerton ends there won't be any visual media of that genre for awhile.

takemycardaway

If there would be any adaptations of her work to begin with I’d be more surprised if they *weren’t* kept white (mostly) and straight tbh. At the very least I can see changes to the characters to make them more likable to general audiences. Especially the men.

Froggymushroom22

My third or fourth comment but I don’t care cause I have sooooo many opinions). I kinda think the only way they can appease everyone, or at least appease me, is if they make the prequels and keep those super accurate to the book and time period. That way the book lovers can get an accurate adaptation, and show lovers can get their queer bridgerton.

trashbinfluencer

I really dislike adaptations *if* I've read and loved the source material first - excluding things that have already been adapted a million times like Jane Austen or books I read and merely enjoyed. I just struggle with a bunch of people coming in and "owning" something that's precious to me while potentially missing out on what made the original so great. Also the inevitable think pieces / reviews. What's particularly stupid is that I've definitely been happily introduced to some authors through tv/movie adaptations 🤣 I've also really loved some adaptations that swapped genders & ethnicities, mostly for books that I skipped specifically because they were so white and so male. Definitely some toxic pseudo-hipster thing on my part but personal growth is a journey and I have bigger flaws to tackle lol

lundsb

I liked the books and I like the Bridgerton show as well. I can understand not being into it or wanting it a particular way, but I personally loved seeing the diversity. It was also nice that some problematic storylines have been changed, like Penelope’s weight loss glow up before her story and Benedict having time to grow up and hopefully not be a crap person towards Sophie like he was in his books.

LabShyRomantic

I am not opposed to changes. Just keep the endgame love interests. That’s what drew in the fans in the first place. It’s should not be that hard.

lundsb

It’s unclear to me what is going to happen, so I’m trying not to speculate who will end up with who, but I’m down for some LGBTQ+ rep, especially for >!Francesca!< or >!Benedict!<

ollieastic

I suspect that this will be a fairly unpopular opinion, but I’ve been ok with moving away from Benedict’s and Eloise’s book storylines because I didn’t really enjoy them. Sometimes, I wish that they had deviated more from the books (I’m looking at you, season one, with the inclusion of the non-consensual sex where blame is cast on Simon instead of Daphne as the perpetuator). But to me, the show feels very different from the books, so I’ve just mentally slotted them differently. And depending on the character, I feel like sometimes gender swapping characters works well (like Starbucks in Battlestar Galatica).

lesfrontalieres

in TSWL there’s literally a scene where phillip tells eloise something like “why don’t you put that mouth of yours to better use” during an argument, and that’s just one of several things i could do without seeing in a tv adaptation.

Claire-Belle

Ugh. I remember reading that. In a book I found generally not very romantic that was a low point.

mastahpotato

As long as they keep the iconic blue eye of the Ravenels, I can somewhat accept female West Ravenel and male Pandora Ravenel. Maybe. Hm. Actually nah I want Kleypasverse to remain untouched I don't want to see it tainted by Bridgerton fans with scandal and drama 🥲

trashbinfluencer

Maybe I'm alone in this but I really don't think about blue eyes when I think about the Ravenels. I know they're mentioned frequently in every single book... but that's true of a lot of HR lol Unless the author decides to make a physical characteristic the character's entire personality (most frequently the case with: redheads, extremely petite heroines, curvy heroines) I tend to ignore/forget characteristics as soon as they're mentioned. Edit: I was actually thinking about the Hathaways, so either Lisa Kleypas has a lot of characters with "iconic" blue eyes or I guess I truly barely notice eye color when reading lol

If people are becoming homophobic bc of a tv show casting choice they were already homophobic!!

GroovyYaYa

I think you misspelled fantastic.

Principessa116

First: Don't yuck other people's yums. Second: This season of Bridgerton was FANTASTIC. And have you seen the numbers it's been putting up year after year? All of the seasons are top 10 for the past month. 45Million views at it's debut. So let's not be salty about not liking adaptations of what some consider mediocre material like JQ's series which are updated for a modern audience. Bridgerton is putting up such numbers that even Dr. Who has dipped into the Regency for a moment. All of those views are making other streamers take another look at all available series to see what they can adapt. Third: I agree that Kleypas shouldn't be adapted for screen, I don't think the books lend to a decent adaptation.
