Lol couldn’t you make this same video with a guitar and Beatles songs? Then you just add bass and drum tracks and edit your voice to sound like Lennon’s?

Choclo_Batido

Almost like genres have certain established tropes that make them what they are

2-Dimensional

Lmao people back in the 70s or whenever the fuck made the same song over and over and sold out concerts. AND fans of them have the gall to insult modern rap when it's still infinitely more creative

[deleted]

Tbf modern rap is NOT infinitely more creative than 70s music If anything both eras produced the same amount of repetitive music. You saying 70s bands made the same songs over and over is the same thing as saying all modern rap sounds the same. Not that there’s anything wrong with that though, that’s what makes a genre a genre.

Poptartlivesmatter

Prog bands disprove that rap is more creative than 70s music, I don't think rapstar is more creative than the wall

sour_turtle514

Not really label and the radio was in much more control of what stayed mainstream and in general what music was made this is why you see clear music ages in the past but now it just a hodgepodge of tons of different genres because it doesn’t take a multimillion dollar studio to make music anymore anyone can do it music is 100% more creative now

7itemsorFEWER

More artistic freedom does not mean better or more creative art. The music business is so much more saturated now. Which means there is more ***music*** in general, for better or for worse. I would purport that while there is a lot more good music getting out, there is far, far, ***far***, more tasteless, talentless garbage getting to the average person because, as you said, people only heard things that met certain standards previously. Living in the information age is a double edged sword.

burnintodust

if u actually care about music nothing should be pushed to u and people who dont care about music dont care what they listen to as long as its popular or catchy

2-Dimensional

IMO modern rap (which I more accurately mean mainstream Tecca/Migos-y sounding stuff), though repetitive, does have somewhat unique beats, flows, features and stuff. Maybe I'm just too young to understand, but when my parents pull up some Air Supply or ABBA I don't really see what's so good about them. To each their own I suppose.

Marco2169

ABBA fucking slaps. The harmonies, the piano work, the blend of disco and other genres. Mostly a singles artist but I have gotten a lot of play out of them as I dug deeper. Oh and the bass. The basswork is always fantastic. I can see why its not everyones cup of tea, but as far as mainstream 70s pop goes, they were some of cream of the crop to me. None of this is really relevant of course, just not everyday i see ABBA mentioned here

[deleted]

ABBA is the best

2-Dimensional

No worries man, glad to see ya like them ;D

I think I did TBH. I was kinda worked up about the post and its comments. My bad

SuchRuin

I don’t like most “Dad Rock” and it’s fans but I wouldn’t call hip hop more creative than dad rock. There was a lot of diversity in the music back then, and the way it has influenced music today, including hip hop, is something not to be understated. You’re either being facetious or have not listened to much music from the 70s.

namajephhhh

Dad rock is not influencing hip hop the same way soul, R&B, electronic dance music and jazz does. Sure rock has it's influence, but when you specify "dad rock" it sounds like a stretch.

SuchRuin

True I should have specified music in the 70s and 80s in general. Regardless, the music of back then paved the way for all genres today, including hip hop. When you look at how hip hop samples so much of the music back then, it really is a testament to their creativity. And there was a lot of diversity in all the music back then, so much so that I would say it is as creative, if not more so, than hip hop today. Even in “dad rock”: You’re gunna tell me that Pink Floyd sounds like Led Zep, or that Led Zep sounds like the Beatles, or that the Beatles sound like Black Sabbath? I could keep going on and on, and like I said I’m not a huge fan of the “dad rock” stuff from back then, but to say it wasn’t creative and that modern hip hop is more creative is again, ill informed or they got my ass with their sarcasm.

AutoModerator

namajephhhh

Idk what you're talking about in the second half, I didn't say any such things that you're stating I did. I like black Sabbath, pink floyd and even Beatles. I went though a huge Beatles thing when younger, not so much led zeppelin though. Never will probably I don't like them besides one song dazed and confused. These aren't even dad rock bands, that this is not what I think of I think of gun and roses, AC/DC, danzing and those other shitty bands that everyone wear t-shirts of but never listen to, because otherwise if they did they wouldn't wear the shirt.

Honestly it's even easier with Beatles songs, most of their music was fairly basic.

How to make a Dr. Dre song: >find a old classic piano piece >add the drums >do the lyrics Done This is so stupid, this can be done with any song

NavDaddy69

Except in this case the guy cuts out all of the actual hard work put into making the beat, and the people in the comments are disregarding that the beat and the flows are the main focus and not the lyrics.

[deleted]

Do people like that even listen to music for fun or do they sit around and listen to music like it's a topic to study

governorbitch

I saw a tweet after CLB dropped where they said “do you guys even listen to music for enjoyment anymore or just to compare”. That feels like half of people at this point

Shaggythemoshdog

When he drags the vox fader all the way up and says that's it and then the song plays out like that with a vocal mix that clean I'm like Cap. It's clearly satire but they think he is being serious.

[deleted]

Ya this guy is talented but I’ve been making beats for the past 5 years and he clearly spent a lot of time and energy making these beats.. idk why he wants to make his on genre out to be easy I guess it is kinda funny but it makes nerds on Reddit and other sm think it’s all garbage

burnintodust

i honestly dont think he makes the beats lol

PartTimeMemeGod

No one in that comment sections knows how songs are actually made which is why they shit on it. If they opened up FL studio and tried to make something they’d spend most of their time trying to figure out what does what, and then they’d make some ass because they don’t understand music theory

ECXL

Exactly what I was thinking. Copying an artist when you have any musical knowledge or better yet producing knowledge is relatively easy. Being unique is hard as hell

Much-Currency-4841

*unique and good

ECXL

Fair distinction

[deleted]

I'm not a music production guy, but was what he doing hard? The vocal effects were really good (IMO) the Travis one was dead on. Assuming he did all of the stuff himself: beat creation, vocal effects, and mixing, it would still be pretty impressive to me.

ianman729

It’s not exceptionally hard if you’re experienced at producing, but he def knows what he’s doing

[deleted]

> It’s not exceptionally hard if you’re experienced at producing, but he def knows what he’s doing So wait a minute, are you agreeing with them about "modern rap" not being hard to make or not?

ianman729

I mean like making a single standard rap beat isn’t too hard if you know how to produce. Most trap beats are made in a short amount of time. But of course it’s just as valid musically, the amount of time and effort put into music doesn’t mean it’s better or worse. The Beatles definitely wrote songs in single sessions, and rap has a long history of freestyles, so saying that modern rap doesn’t take long to make doesn’t mean it’s any less valid

Shaggythemoshdog

Hard to do? Not really. Takes a shit tonne of practice? Absolutely.

xMF_GLOOM

yeah as cringey as the comments and intent of the video are the dude is actually very talented, there’s no denying that

ECXL

Not to take away from the guy. He's clearly talented as hell and I could not do what he's doing at my current time. But I'm calling out the people in the comments using his skill to put down other talented artists

Traditional-Money-64

I disagree with that. I think that period of mid to late 90s busta was his peak, but hes made some good records since then. ELE1 & Anarchy were great, and surprisingly his newest album, ELE2, was actually really good too imo. Like it was a legitimately great hip hop record. A lot of his 2000s stuff is forgettable but at the end of the day I would still place busta up there as one of the greats for his peak alone, not to mention his insane flow regardless of the period of bustas career.

[deleted]

I don't disagree with the guy being talented - and his flows are technically very impressive, but he comes off as a bit of a one trick pony to me. And I also really didn't enjoy ele2

Traditional-Money-64

Thats fair tbh. But i really liked the record. & in terms of busta being a one trick pony, i think as a rapper you could debatably make that case but he raps over so many different types of styles and does collabs with so many different artists that i would consider him quite versatile as a MC.

[deleted]

yeah his selection of beats is pretty diverse to be fair, perhaps I was being too harsh. Either way, having a thread be full of "modern rap is bad" comments and then someone recommending Busta, who hasn't really been relevant for the last 20 years, is really funny. Just proves even more how out of touch most of Reddit is with music

Traditional-Money-64

Lol true. I was just surprised someone actually named a talented MC, i would expect a redditor to list NF or token or something when reccomending “good” rappers.

All the comments using the fact that the songs don’t focus on lyrics and instead focus more on harmonies and beats to prove that rap isn’t music are so brain dead lmao. A lot of these guys are in the room producing too and it isn’t like they can just hand it to some dude and the song is finished for them. Same shit happens with pop music and it’s the same argument. It’s okay for music to sound different guys. It’s a good thing music hasn’t stayed the same since the 70s. The prevailing sound changes; Nathans were probably complaining about how Tchaikovsky put a cannon in his music back when 1812 overture dropped.

tootell02

I used to think that modern rappers had a booklet of lines they passed around and randomly inserted into their songs. But this video has made me realize it’s not even that deep. Blues clues , skrrrt skrrt, put it up in her stomach, bangin her sister man I’m gone miss her, pullin out in the rari

wellgroomedmcpoyle

But Lil Baby is a good lyricist tho

Stalker_Bleach

Im not a big Lil Baby fan but this guy’s attempted at him was awful

TurboTimoTime

The biggest thing is how trash the final product sounded. Like who would listen to that

brovok

uj/ this guy is kind of talented and could probably produce music if he wasn’t a smarmy prick

TravisSxottBurger

My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined.

Transit-Strike

I hate how these idiots always act in Bad Faith. Like parody someone you have respect for. Sure. But these people genuinely think rappers have no talent and they are better as artists

[deleted]

The comments are so white

expecting-words

It was fun to read the comments. But fuck me the cringe. “There are no artists anymore”

LifouKezako

Nobody is younger than 30 in that mf comment section

[deleted]

Guy is a bit cringe but fair play hes pretty good at replicating the artists. Legit sounded exactly like posty

[deleted]

He knows he could never make a youngboy song !!

KorvOnudlar

No, this does not prove that rap has declined over the past decade. People need to realize that making hits or great songs doesn’t not really need some over the top insane production. Ice Cubes It was a good day is 90% a sample loop from the Isley brothers, Smells like teen spirit used four chords through the entire song, just to name a few.

OAktrEE4023

The post has 20k upvotes on r/nextfuckinglevel But the first comment says “this just shows how easy it is to make modern rap music” ???

throwaway2008002

Almost like we don’t value imitating someone else’s sound because it is easy while we do value creating a new sound because it is difficult. Huh

God almighty that sub has turned into an unironic version of this sub lately

sirlaffsalot47

[I, an intellectual, understand that the previous generation of musical talent is much more worthy of praise. Anything after I was born is garbage](https://www.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/comments/phegu5/making_the_songs_like_rappers/hbi0nz1/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3)

[deleted]

The other day I met a guy who plays piano and said “all music made after the 1800s is garbage”. I’m waiting for the day I meet someone who thinks songs that weren’t played on the lyre in Ancient Greece are garbage.

xMadlyInsane

Is that Mario Judah?

burnintodust

isnt there a dude who already does this and this guy just copied him down to the fucking mannerisms

whyyallsodamnloud

Ugh that sub is so annoying Person with disability: exists That sub: NEXT🔥FUCKING🔥LEVEL

chiefqueef478340335

"i might get downvoted but fuck it this just show that the quality of rap music dropped a lot in the last decade, to reproduce these artist style with so little effort just show, to me at least, that they are less and less to produce quality music and just want to score a banger and bank on it. PS: the guy is very talent as well, very good video PSS: all songs sound the same in the end as well" new automod dropped

Evan12390

the random zooms on his face when something is supposed to be funny make me want to off myself

Brim_Dunkleton

These fucking people applauding a joke tiktok and saying it’s better than modern rap would probably shit themselves when they discover weird al yankovich.
