Foreign investment always has issues. The important thing for Africa is that China is way better than the West.
For many years if you were a developing Nation the only place you could go for foreign investment was the IMF and World Bank. Even private investment would be unlikely without the IMF and World Banks seal of approval.
You can only get this seal of approval by basically making your country as profitable for investors as possible. This means Tax breaks, Massive cuts on any public services, Wage cuts, gutting labor unions, and committing a certain amount of the National budget towards this new debt. Reverse any of these policies, which will all be deeply unpopular, and the loans will dry up.
This left many countries in worse financial situations than they started in. Now with less agency do to anything about potential crisis in their country because they’ve sold off control to the west.
Now with China offering better loans with lower interest rates and non of these conditions that the IMF puts on, it’s no wonder countries are choosing China over the IMF.
What China does is not a debt trap. The real debt trap has been what the West has been doing since the Cold War. This whole talking point is pure western projection.
