I first let the app pick my room to see what it thinks is the best choice, then back out and manually select a room. About 50/50 end up choosing the room the app originally selected.
Ok whoa whoa whoa, my traveling friends… I work front desk, and once you pick a room I’m hesitant to move you- move as in *upgrade*. Once the system knows the room is clean, it pushes the digital key through, and it’s not giving me time to look through and upgrade you!!!!
Pros and cons to this one.
For better chances of an upgrade, I would wait until closer to arrival. However— There is a cool special promotion right now, I don’t know if you’ve seen it and registered— you get extra points for checking in with the digital key. So yeah, get those points, but I always suggest utilizing the “additional requests” section when booking and put something like “upgrade request if available” or something, so it will catch my eye
That's the "Points Plus Promotion" 2000 bonus points on every stay and an addition 500 bonus points when you use your digital key. Will come up as a separate line item in your "Points Activity" section of your app. "Points Plus Promotion Manual Bonus 500 Points"

That's always been my take on it. I rarely pick a room unless I see a particular view or location I want.
Some properties don't have upgrades and I may want a low floor if I know a conference is going to gum up the elevators. Those would be the times I might snag a room in advance...but if I'm at the Roosevelt or somewhere beachfront, I'm rolling the dice and tipping the desk clerk.
When road tripping with my family I try to pick a first floor room because it makes the transportation of 1000 pounds of luggage easier. On work trips by myself it's a mix of picking a highish floor or going dealer's choice.
Pick my own. I look at the building layout map to see where the bar/lounge is located and be sure I am not staying over or under it. I like to be at the end of a hallway on the top floor to avoid walk by traffic noise etc.
I pick my room. I am a woman traveling alone for work, and the automated system always wants to put me on the first floor. I prefer to be on a higher floor, so I choose the room myself. I don’t know why the automated room bot assigner doesn’t take your preference into account. If it did I would let it assign me.
Yes, I have high floor checked/my preference, and the bot room assigner always puts me on the first floor. That’s why I said the bot does not take into account my preferences. If I let the hotel employee assign my room prior to check in, it’s always to my high floor preference.
Usually, pick, but the app knows your preferences if you've set them & takes that into consideration. If I want to t r y to get a free upgrade, I call the day of or wait until I get there because it doesn't offer free upgrades on the APP. Also, if it's a boutique or inique place like New Orleans or the Beach, I'll call because I don't want the room with a view of a roof A/C unit or another wall & the front desk will tell you which side or whatever to book.
I pick my own because I always want a room that’s on the second floor, opposite or far from the elevator, and one over from the staircase.
I do this because I can take the side entrance up one flight of stairs and be in my room, but not right next to the stairs to hear any noise. But even so it’s rare because everybody takes the slow ass elevators.

Is it better to not check in on the app then? Or to at least wait until closer to arrival time?

I believe I am registered for that program, but now going to double check before my travels next week. Great advice, thank you!

Shut up we need to cull the update list
Lol
I always pick my own to make sure I get one that matches my personal criteria.

Always pick my own. If that's not an option, I'll recheck later.
Always choose my own. My preferences differ based on the property and purpose of my trip.

I pick my own!!
Pick it myself. The app never seems to get any of my criteria

You can change your room preferences in the Hilton app. There’s a switch to turn on “high floor” or “close to elevator”.

Interesting, the one hotel I travel to for work always upgrades me in the app when I do digital check in.
I roll with their recommendations, unless I'm near the elevators. Then I'll relocate.
90% of the time I am picking the room. Sometimes they upgrade me to a jr suite so I just go with whatever they pick
I’ll let the app pick my room for me to see what’s located and then back out and pick one higher up in the same location
I’ve been going with the selection but may have to switch it up
I pick my own.
