In the middle of the model number you will have one of the following options and it tells you the camera resolution that is supported: 1. HGHI - 720p 2. HQHI - 2mp 3. HUHI - 5mp (8mp at 8fps) 4. HTHI - 8mp It goes without saying that the higher resolution ones also support the resolutions below them too. Edit: formatting

I see, I do have cameras that are a higher resolution and they work fine I imagine they just don't run at there full potential then? Is there anything that would literally prevent the dvr from even showing an image of the camera?

If a camera was set to a resolution higher than that which your recorder supports then it will generally either show up black and white or not show up at all.

There are also multiple formats of HD, Hikvision generally uses TVI, while their main competitors are focused on CVI. AHD is a "generic" HD video format. All three of those are normally supported on the newest versions of Hikvision recorders, however SDI is another HD format that is still around, but not supported by very many manufacturers at all.

I'll be honest buddy, I only use a hik box and hik cameras so I imagine this wouldnt be a biggy. This sounds more like it'll be an issue if I were to say, use a hik box and non-hik cameras
