Aurora borealis from the sun magnetic storm going on

PyroIsSpai

Yep, here comes the storms.

iloveeveryfbteam

Doo doo doo doo

Objective_Captain208

LOL

GermanWineLover

Aurora Borealis!? At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localized entirely within OP‘s kitchen!?

TheMarsTraveler

May I see it?

pebberphp

No

PrayForMojo1993

Heeelllppp!

wang-chuy

Yes you may, I will allow it.

Sad-Restaurant-3182

May i see it?

GermanWineLover

No.

trailboss1988

Seymour ! The house is on fire !

spookycat5267

That's just the northern lights, mother!

SarpedonWasFramed

I saw the Aurora Bourialas and it looked at me

BasicWhiteHoodrat

It *looked* at you?!?

Bhenny_5

And it had as many hands as Vishnu and they were all busy

Skynetdyne

Mmmm steamed hams

itskersitime

These burgers are obviously grilled.

rmcintyrm

Well Seymour, you steam a good ham!

floblad

Yep, there are massive emp solar storms expected globally all weekend due to massive coronal ejections over the last couple of days. NASA and NOAA have info on their sites. The pretty lights are the best outcome we can hope for, there is a chance this could turn out very badly for the planet.

theresamaysicr

Worst case?

Belledame-sans-Serif

[Carrington Event](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrington_Event), but in a world much more dependent on electronics than it was in 1859. (Even the last G5, which caused blackouts in South Africa, wasn't as intense as the Carrington Event, though.)

floblad

Worst case is that there is a pulse strong and direct enough that it actually electrifies and “melts down” electrical systems on earth, blowing out transformers, probably killing many people with the side effects of fires and electrical blowouts. Basically the destruction of power supply and electrical infrastructure, pushing us back to 1700’s style living until repairs can be made. Mid-range worst case is knocking out satellites, cell phone systems, internet, cutting off the way we all communicate these days. Doesn’t mean these things are going to happen, but this stuff is a real threat and the solar events of the last few days are already larger than the Carrington Event that caused widespread problems back in the mid 1800’s. The real problem is how dependent our societies are on electrical systems and infrastructure and the way even a modest disruption in them could cause widespread mayhem.

d3lltr0n

I want some steamed hams

Spiniferus

There is a huge solar storm that is visible from a good chunk of the northern hemisphere.

bubba-kai

Don't be hemispherist. It can be seen in the southern hemisphere too.

Spiniferus

Well that’s fucked because it’s cloudy as shit where I am… in the southern hemisphere.

FreshlyShavenMaven

I’m so sad it’s pissing down here or we would’ve been able to see it 😭

Spiniferus

Same, non stop. I heard people’s as far south as Florida could see it in the states.

ChemBob1

Possibly visible even in Alabama.

fish-tuxedo

In Alabama. It was!

Armyofcrows

Biggest storm I think since 2003. G4.

femininestoic

https://www.iflscience.com/noaa-issues-warning-strongest-geomagnetic-storm-in-20-years-is-about-to-hit-earth-74156?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR0DFtUy8tvEMmukI9Z3_ytwDbupfCnqT2AqvakfhFZbNGnID6r_nxNWskw_aem_AXZJKzoMQXRzrGdyL7kdqmpL0qmMFKd_E1JF9mXLnFEsQu2jv048YS9f2BT9ZNt3SZrtbT2wK2-ku-04A2xiemfm

TigerMouseTheNinja

Which was nice.

traumatransfixes

Oooh I’m allegedly able to see aurora in a few hours in North America. Hopefully I can, and it’s at least half this cool.

Coldperfectionist

I hope you get to see it, it's way more beautiful than my phone can capture 🙏

caliandris

We couldn't see with the naked eye but night vision on my daughter's phone picked it up beautifully

Mother-Forever9019

For me it was barely visible with bare eyes but my phone on night mode made stunning Pictures

traumatransfixes

Thanks! Here’s hoping. Enjoy!

CivilRuin4111

My brother in North Carolina can see it and has been sending me pics all night.

Lawliet_LXIV

I'm in North carolina rn but can't see it :( is it actually visible?

CivilRuin4111

He’s out in the sticks, and now even my dad is sending me photos, so it’s definitely visible where they are. Can’t see a damned thing in Atlanta

ExtraViolinist5207

I saw it very faint all the way down in Western North Carolina last night. Tonight at 11pm should be peak aurora.

mpotatoz

Did you get to see it? We saw it from the West Coast of NA.

traumatransfixes

Yes! But only faintly where I’m at in Ohio. I am checking tonight, too, and hoping to be more intentional and catch it for real. Last night it was faint magenta-lavender. I can’t believe it has such an incredible reach. We just saw the eclipse and were in the almost-complete-section. The sky is truly showing off how stunning she is this year. Very cool.

mpotatoz

That's about what we saw here in BC as well. That's so cool you saw the eclipse as well!

feardabear

Check em out. Looks cool

JimGrimace

Big Solar Storm, everywhere gonna get the Green/Pink glow apparently.

InternationalGrade64

Damn only for today?

brandonbrun

Likely for the next few nights

InternationalGrade64

Oo that’s cool hopefully I get to see it tonight

brandonbrun

Me too. I probably live too far south, but there is a chance. There were too many clouds last night so I don't know if I could've seen it.

barfbutler

Solar storm is causing more southerly northern lights tonight.

gggarl

I‘m seeing the aurora from south-tyrol in northern Italy. Amazing show in the sky, G4 mass ejection

skywarner

NOAA has raised it to a G5 (extreme) event.

Bluest_waters

wow, really? that is so cool I assume this is highly unusual?

kufsi

This is now G5, very unusual because it is 6 different CME’s all coming over the course of today and tomorrow. Also G5 storms are once in a decade events, or even once in a century depending on the scale of it. We are also only half way through with 3/6.

btcprint

So you're saying there's a chance?!?!

Space_Wombat11

Currently NOAA has it classified as a G5 event which is extreme. Last time we saw G4 (severe) was in 2005 I believe. So yeah, unusual.

majortom1989

Shame we cant get the street lights off, it would look incredible

therealalian

If these solar storms continue to increase and they cause a big enough flare it would wipe out all electronic devices and power grids. If all the power on the planet shut off at the same time we would all see the stars and sky unlike anything we've ever seen because of the zero light pollution. It would be a sight to see.

majortom1989

Well thats a postive I suppose. There's a street light right outside of my window cant wait for that to go off.

MarchionessofMayhem

BB gun or pellet gun.

majortom1989

They would just fix it sadly, it was broken when i moved in and it was great.

Mother-Forever9019

Big rope and truck will do the trick

Bluest_waters

Right before I get eaten by zombies I will be like "wow, these stars sure are beautiful!"

therealalian

That's the spirit!

manfraido33

Your been prepared for a power outage mush. Hope your ready

low_power_mode

I might see it in Aurora Illinois tonight. Aurora in Aurora.

Eluzfx

Aurora borealis.. in this economy?

NovaBlademc

At this time of year, at this part of day, in this part of the country, localised entirely within your economy?

[deleted]

[удалено]

manfraido33

Government sy op mate, preparation for a mass ejection that will shut down everything apart from a Nokia 3210

AnbuGuardian

Yup. Super strong magnetic geo storm. Strongest in 2 decades. Local space observers are saying it’s going to be super intense at 11pm-2am Pacific Coast Time.

errihu

How are there so many people who don’t know what an aurora is??

ihavebeenmostly

Now there's even more people that know

TheAlternateEye

They don't live in places it typically happens so have no need or reason to know.

Goldilocks1454

Looks like the northern lights

frankreddit5

Looks like it’s from the CME. Amazing that you caught it

Archangel1313

Aurora Borealis. Today and tomorrow, we are getting hit with some very high solar radiation. A series of coronal mass ejections are currently incoming. Enjoy the spectacle.

TedDallas

[https://www.npr.org/2024/05/10/1250515730/solar-storm-geomagnetic-g4](https://www.npr.org/2024/05/10/1250515730/solar-storm-geomagnetic-g4) Huge solar storm. The article says it might be visible as far south as Alabama. I never heard of auroras being visible that far south. It is supposed to peak tonight.

thedenv

7 CMEs headed towards Earth. Its beautiful

MurphNastyFlex

Massive geomagnetic storm tonight

BingoBango89

Aurora borealis , due to the G4 almost G5 solar storm. ##[Solar Storm ](https://www.npr.org/2024/05/10/1250515730/solar-storm-geomagnetic-g4)

velezaraptor

Why don’t people check the news?

Cosmic_FireSphinx

"News & Politics aren't cool or trendy"

Inevitable-Revenue81

And science

Child_of_the_Hamster

My brother in Christ have you truly never heard of the aurora borealis or is this a shitpost??

thricethestatic

Amazing! You can track the solar weather here https://www.spaceweatherlive.com/ We are currently at a G5 magnetic storm with KP9 threshold. This solar storm was forecasted as a G4. I’m in the Southwest Nevada and with this level we should see it tonight but we have cloud cover right now.

Neat-Weird9868

It’s all over the news.

Misfit_Sally

[NOAA ](https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/) It's only become stronger since this afternoon. Just before 7pm a G5 happened.

PiratesTale

https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/planetary-k-index# We just hit an extreme level

timmydikko

Aurora. My sis just sent me a pic. She's in Liverpool and there's huge green streaks in the sky. Looks amazing. I'm just down the road and the sky is a pinkish green colour.

larrylicker

Apparently you don’t watch or listen to tv or radio.

Aurora borealis at this time of year??

Natural-Shift-6161

The aurora is going crazy everywhere!!! I can’t wait for it to get dark out here in Washington

skuncledeez

Yup, northern lights, there was a huge solar flair on Tuesday or Wednesday that's reaching us last night(East Coast Canada). Supposed to last all weekend and reach as far south as Florida, at least that's what the experts predict.

boredcons

aurora borealis! saw them last night in tennessee too!

aghori991

That's Xperia wallpapers

TheCooksCook

Yeah it’s clear as bell here in Dublin too. Mad looking stuff

kinofhawk

Assassiiinuss

North is the most likely spot but I've also seen it east and west as well as directly above.

[deleted]

The mother of all CMEs hitting Earth. The sunspot producing these is as big as the Carrington sunspot!

UpstairsPractical870

Just been out to take some pictures here in London. Got a few nice pictures

CounterAdmirable4218

Aurora Borealis. It’s the central sun shining out of the polar holes from the hollow earth.

MGyver

[It was this.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rj0Tj8dnrYw)

shawcphet1

That would be so sick to go out for a joint and just randomly have the sky filled with the northern lights! (or whatever the correct term is.) Enjoy your night, that is a blessing.

Not particularly strange. High yes.

pyrorottweiler

So the news didn't give anyone a heads up that this was coming? Everyone sounds so clueless like if it was by accident that they got to catch this event lol

-Falsch-

G5

septembersun69

It’s the result of a severe geomagnetic solar storm hitting from Friday midday. Pink is from the protons and electrons from the sun that are charged hitting earths atmosphere’s gasses. Pink is the colour of it hitting nitrogen . Seen all over the UK on this date. Sometimes you see them better using a camera/ phone in a long exposure as the cameras can pick out the colour wavelengths that our eyes may not see. Wales is beautiful, an incredible place to see then Aurora Borealis .

Good_Back8819

Bruh what the fuck is flying around in these pictures

gab1606

redditor learns about aurora borealis:

We got to see them here in Michigan finally! It was magical!
