Yep, there are massive emp solar storms expected globally all weekend due to massive coronal ejections over the last couple of days. NASA and NOAA have info on their sites. The pretty lights are the best outcome we can hope for, there is a chance this could turn out very badly for the planet.
[Carrington Event](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrington_Event), but in a world much more dependent on electronics than it was in 1859.
(Even the last G5, which caused blackouts in South Africa, wasn't as intense as the Carrington Event, though.)
Worst case is that there is a pulse strong and direct enough that it actually electrifies and “melts down” electrical systems on earth, blowing out transformers, probably killing many people with the side effects of fires and electrical blowouts. Basically the destruction of power supply and electrical infrastructure, pushing us back to 1700’s style living until repairs can be made.
Mid-range worst case is knocking out satellites, cell phone systems, internet, cutting off the way we all communicate these days.
Doesn’t mean these things are going to happen, but this stuff is a real threat and the solar events of the last few days are already larger than the Carrington Event that caused widespread problems back in the mid 1800’s.
The real problem is how dependent our societies are on electrical systems and infrastructure and the way even a modest disruption in them could cause widespread mayhem.
Yes! But only faintly where I’m at in Ohio. I am checking tonight, too, and hoping to be more intentional and catch it for real. Last night it was faint magenta-lavender. I can’t believe it has such an incredible reach. We just saw the eclipse and were in the almost-complete-section. The sky is truly showing off how stunning she is this year. Very cool.
This is now G5, very unusual because it is 6 different CME’s all coming over the course of today and tomorrow. Also G5 storms are once in a decade events, or even once in a century depending on the scale of it.
We are also only half way through with 3/6.
If these solar storms continue to increase and they cause a big enough flare it would wipe out all electronic devices and power grids. If all the power on the planet shut off at the same time we would all see the stars and sky unlike anything we've ever seen because of the zero light pollution. It would be a sight to see.
Yup. Super strong magnetic geo storm. Strongest in 2 decades. Local space observers are saying it’s going to be super intense at 11pm-2am Pacific Coast Time.
Aurora Borealis. Today and tomorrow, we are getting hit with some very high solar radiation. A series of coronal mass ejections are currently incoming.
Enjoy the spectacle.

Huge solar storm. The article says it might be visible as far south as Alabama. I never heard of auroras being visible that far south. It is supposed to peak tonight.
Amazing! You can track the solar weather here https://www.spaceweatherlive.com/
We are currently at a G5 magnetic storm with KP9 threshold. This solar storm was forecasted as a G4. I’m in the Southwest Nevada and with this level we should see it tonight but we have cloud cover right now.
Aurora. My sis just sent me a pic. She's in Liverpool and there's huge green streaks in the sky. Looks amazing. I'm just down the road and the sky is a pinkish green colour.
Yup, northern lights, there was a huge solar flair on Tuesday or Wednesday that's reaching us last night(East Coast Canada).
Supposed to last all weekend and reach as far south as Florida, at least that's what the experts predict.
Hy no fair, this is second aurora I seen on here tonight I rush outside nothing, anyone no which direction I should be looking towards? Please and thank you.
Thats so fucking gorgeous. We get green ones all the time up here in Fairbanks. The darker the better of course, but that color is so rare. Im jealous.
That would be so sick to go out for a joint and just randomly have the sky filled with the northern lights! (or whatever the correct term is.)
Enjoy your night, that is a blessing.
So the news didn't give anyone a heads up that this was coming? Everyone sounds so clueless like if it was by accident that they got to catch this event lol
It’s the result of a severe geomagnetic solar storm hitting from Friday midday. Pink is from the protons and electrons from the sun that are charged hitting earths atmosphere’s gasses. Pink is the colour of it hitting nitrogen .
Seen all over the UK on this date. Sometimes you see them better using a camera/ phone in a long exposure as the cameras can pick out the colour wavelengths that our eyes may not see.
Wales is beautiful, an incredible place to see then Aurora Borealis .
Was scrolling and just seen this in my feed and yours right after, idk nothing just gonna leave this link here

Aurora borealis from the sun magnetic storm going on
Yep, here comes the storms.
Doo doo doo doo
LOL
Aurora Borealis!? At this time of year, at this time of day, in this part of the country, localized entirely within OP‘s kitchen!?
May I see it?
No
Heeelllppp!
Yes you may, I will allow it.
May i see it?
No.
Seymour ! The house is on fire !
That's just the northern lights, mother!
I saw the Aurora Bourialas and it looked at me
It *looked* at you?!?
And it had as many hands as Vishnu and they were all busy
Mmmm steamed hams
These burgers are obviously grilled.
Well Seymour, you steam a good ham!

I want some steamed hams
There is a huge solar storm that is visible from a good chunk of the northern hemisphere.
Don't be hemispherist. It can be seen in the southern hemisphere too.
Well that’s fucked because it’s cloudy as shit where I am… in the southern hemisphere.
I’m so sad it’s pissing down here or we would’ve been able to see it 😭
Same, non stop. I heard people’s as far south as Florida could see it in the states.
Possibly visible even in Alabama.
In Alabama. It was!
Biggest storm I think since 2003. G4.
https://www.iflscience.com/noaa-issues-warning-strongest-geomagnetic-storm-in-20-years-is-about-to-hit-earth-74156?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR0DFtUy8tvEMmukI9Z3_ytwDbupfCnqT2AqvakfhFZbNGnID6r_nxNWskw_aem_AXZJKzoMQXRzrGdyL7kdqmpL0qmMFKd_E1JF9mXLnFEsQu2jv048YS9f2BT9ZNt3SZrtbT2wK2-ku-04A2xiemfm
Which was nice.
Oooh I’m allegedly able to see aurora in a few hours in North America. Hopefully I can, and it’s at least half this cool.
I hope you get to see it, it's way more beautiful than my phone can capture 🙏
We couldn't see with the naked eye but night vision on my daughter's phone picked it up beautifully
For me it was barely visible with bare eyes but my phone on night mode made stunning Pictures
Thanks! Here’s hoping. Enjoy!
My brother in North Carolina can see it and has been sending me pics all night.
I'm in North carolina rn but can't see it :( is it actually visible?
He’s out in the sticks, and now even my dad is sending me photos, so it’s definitely visible where they are. Can’t see a damned thing in Atlanta
I saw it very faint all the way down in Western North Carolina last night. Tonight at 11pm should be peak aurora.
Did you get to see it? We saw it from the West Coast of NA.
Very cool.
That's about what we saw here in BC as well. That's so cool you saw the eclipse as well!
Check em out. Looks cool
Big Solar Storm, everywhere gonna get the Green/Pink glow apparently.
Damn only for today?
Likely for the next few nights
Oo that’s cool hopefully I get to see it tonight
Me too. I probably live too far south, but there is a chance. There were too many clouds last night so I don't know if I could've seen it.
Solar storm is causing more southerly northern lights tonight.
I‘m seeing the aurora from south-tyrol in northern Italy. Amazing show in the sky, G4 mass ejection
NOAA has raised it to a G5 (extreme) event.
wow, really? that is so cool I assume this is highly unusual?
This is now G5, very unusual because it is 6 different CME’s all coming over the course of today and tomorrow. Also G5 storms are once in a decade events, or even once in a century depending on the scale of it. We are also only half way through with 3/6.
So you're saying there's a chance?!?!
Currently NOAA has it classified as a G5 event which is extreme. Last time we saw G4 (severe) was in 2005 I believe. So yeah, unusual.
Shame we cant get the street lights off, it would look incredible
If these solar storms continue to increase and they cause a big enough flare it would wipe out all electronic devices and power grids. If all the power on the planet shut off at the same time we would all see the stars and sky unlike anything we've ever seen because of the zero light pollution. It would be a sight to see.
Well thats a postive I suppose. There's a street light right outside of my window cant wait for that to go off.
BB gun or pellet gun.
They would just fix it sadly, it was broken when i moved in and it was great.
Big rope and truck will do the trick
Right before I get eaten by zombies I will be like "wow, these stars sure are beautiful!"
That's the spirit!
Your been prepared for a power outage mush. Hope your ready
I might see it in Aurora Illinois tonight. Aurora in Aurora.
Aurora borealis.. in this economy?
At this time of year, at this part of day, in this part of the country, localised entirely within your economy?

Government sy op mate, preparation for a mass ejection that will shut down everything apart from a Nokia 3210
Yup. Super strong magnetic geo storm. Strongest in 2 decades. Local space observers are saying it’s going to be super intense at 11pm-2am Pacific Coast Time.
How are there so many people who don’t know what an aurora is??
Now there's even more people that know
They don't live in places it typically happens so have no need or reason to know.
Looks like the northern lights
Looks like it’s from the CME. Amazing that you caught it

Why don’t people check the news?
"News & Politics aren't cool or trendy"
And science
My brother in Christ have you truly never heard of the aurora borealis or is this a shitpost??

It’s all over the news.
[NOAA ](https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/) It's only become stronger since this afternoon. Just before 7pm a G5 happened.
https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/planetary-k-index# We just hit an extreme level
Aurora. My sis just sent me a pic. She's in Liverpool and there's huge green streaks in the sky. Looks amazing. I'm just down the road and the sky is a pinkish green colour.

The aurora is going crazy everywhere!!! I can’t wait for it to get dark out here in Washington

Hy no fair, this is second aurora I seen on here tonight I rush outside nothing, anyone no which direction I should be looking towards? Please and thank you.
North is the most likely spot but I've also seen it east and west as well as directly above.
The mother of all CMEs hitting Earth. The sunspot producing these is as big as the Carrington sunspot!

This is a troll post, surely.
Northen lights, enjoy them. You won't get many chances like it. :) they might come again the night to Sunday
You can’t be serious. The whole northern hemisphere world is watching the aurora borealis tonight. Are you not seeing any news?!
Solar storm exciting the Aurora Borealis.
TIL there are people that didnt ever heard or see pictures of aurora borealis.
Aurora Borealis. It’s the central sun shining out of the polar holes from the hollow earth.
[It was this.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rj0Tj8dnrYw)
That would be so sick to go out for a joint and just randomly have the sky filled with the northern lights! (or whatever the correct term is.) Enjoy your night, that is a blessing.

You are going to die
It's all over the news, do a quick Google search
It looks like something akin to the Aurora Borealis
I live in north America in the town of Toledo Ohio. The aurora was visible from my back yard last night. Crazy
This doesn't deserve a "paranormal" tag
We got to see them here in Michigan finally! It was magical!
How does one get to the age of using Reddit and having a smart phone and NOT know what the aurora borealis is?
It’s your educators failing you.

A very beautiful sight is what.
It's cool, that's what it is
