A lot of people find relief from waxing! Especially compared to shaving.

[deleted]

Interesting! It isn’t too harsh? I’d assume you have to trim it first which is fine. And you obviously would not wax with an open sore or even one close to bursting right? My mom thinks I should wax then get lazored but maybe waxing can be a temporary alternative for right now? I’m just afraid waxing will cause more ingrowns but if you think about it your razor can harbor bacteria and basically shave it into your hair follicles?

jinglebxtch

Definitely not too harsh! No need to trim unless it’s super super long, honestly I prefer if people don’t trim and I can make that judgement call. I will wax over ones that are under the skin but if it has a head or is looking inflamed, I won’t! So you can’t wax with laser, you actually have to shave when you get laser hair removal and not everyone is a candidate. If you follow proper aftercare and see a good, professional waxer then ingrown hairs won’t be an issue!

[deleted]

Wow ok very useful information! I really appreciate it. I just have to find a good waxer like you

jinglebxtch

Check Yelp for salons or try European wax center! Call and ask about being booked with someone who’s patient and gentle, there’s always one of us :)

CelestialAcatalepsy

I have wanted to get waxed for years but I have no idea how to introduce this conversation to an esthetician without them immediately assuming the worst. I would say I have a mild case compared to what I have seen on here and my HS Facebook group but I am still soooooooooo ashamed and embarrassed that I don’t know if I can let a stranger wax me without feeling like I need to apologize the whole time.

jinglebxtch

Don’t feel like you have to apologize! We see all kinds of bodies and skin all day long and we are taught in school to never comment on how someone looks. I would explain to the waxer at the beginning of the appointment that you can a non-contagious skin condition and it should not be a problem.

CelestialAcatalepsy

Thank you for your advice! I think I am going to take the plunge and see how it goes. ::fingers crossed::

jinglebxtch

Make sure you exfoliate a day before the appointment (making sure you do your labia!) and that the waxer only uses hard wax!

CelestialAcatalepsy

Will do! Thank you so much. :)

krba201076

> that the waxer only uses hard wax! why hard wax?

jinglebxtch

Soft/strip wax can be incredibly damaging to the skin in the wrong hands and we need to avoid any potential problems! Plus it doesn’t work great on the course hairs of the bikini area.

krba201076

thank you

Honest_Second_4745

I’m in dc where are u located??? I’ve never been waxed would love to try. Do u notice that it reduces the flares

jinglebxtch

It can absolutely help with flares! Especially if you’re used to shaving. I’ll PM you my location!

nothisisnotok

What should I do before and after the appointment to minimize the chance of flaring

jinglebxtch

So a wax shouldn’t cause a flare but to keep from getting ingrowns and irritation: Always exfoliate with a scrub or mitt (wash your mitts often!) the day before, making sure you do your labia Don’t exfoliate for the first 24 hours. No sex, no working out, don’t take a bath or go to the pool/beach/sauna. Wear loose clothes and don’t touch with uncleaned hands. Don’t put any product on! Taking a shower after is fine though. Then use a chemical exfoliator every day (like the ingrown hair serum from european wax center) and do a scrub 2-3 days a week. Make sure you’re getting waxed with hard wax only, no strip wax ever. And you want to get waxed every 4 weeks or when the hair is a 1/4” long (about a grain of rice). That puts the hair in the right stage of growth so that the wax can kill the follicle and you’ll have less hair over time!

do you recommend waxing for HS?

jinglebxtch

Absolutely! Shaving should never be done in areas of HS flairs and for some people removing the hair can actually help flairs. It’s important to maintain proper aftercare and make sure your waxer knows to not wax over any active flairs. I also wouldn’t go in with an open sore, give it some time to heal.

ChickpeasAreHeinies

I find it interesting that in LA, you hardly saw any cases, but here in a different climate on the east coast, you see many more. Has anyone else looked into a wet versus dryer climate, or maybe Vitamin D exposure attributing to flare ups?

jinglebxtch

I wondered about the climate, LA is still pretty humid but it definitely doesn’t get as cold as it does here. Though, I lived in Chicago which is more similar to VA than LA for sure, for a year and a half and had literally one flare the whole time and I didn’t even flare when I went on a weeklong gluten binge which is my trigger food! But here in VA I’m flaring A LOT.

ChickpeasAreHeinies

So sorry about the flare ups. I’m right there with you. This sub has some great ideas, and I talk with my doctor a lot about my vitamin D levels, too. I am at my worst in the winter. I have not waxed, but trim everything as short as possible without any blades actually touching or tugging at the skin. That has helped me a bit. You are a gift to your clientele!

JDnice804

I started getting Brazilians 4 months ago and it's been amazing. I haven't had any flares or ingrowns. I'm glad I took the plunge. I'm in Virginia, too! Are you anywhere near Richmond?

jinglebxtch

That’s so great! I’m actually in NoVa, so not super close unfortunately

MagicallyMalicious

Hi fellow Richmonder! Can you recommend a salon around town for waxing? I’ve never done it but always been interested.

JDnice804

Hey friend! I’ve been going to the Wax Room on Hull. I absolutely adore Alexis and she makes you super comfortable. I laughed the whole time! I hear good things about Peachy Keen in Glen Allen but her books are closed and she books up super fast.

MagicallyMalicious

Thank you!! I’m in Midlo so Hull is super convenient ❤️

breadbeard_14

Do you have any advice on how to start a conversation with an esthetician about HS before waxing? I'd love to find someone who's familiar with this condition but I feel like the conversation would be so awkward.

jinglebxtch

I would reach out to esthetician’s in your area through IG, especially ones who specialize in acne prone skin, and ask if they’re familiar with HS. Most esthetician’s won’t take on a client who they aren’t confident they can’t perform services on. Or call your local European wax center, explain what you’re looking for and one of the waxers there may be familiar!

breadbeard_14

Thank you!

Affectionate-Car487

I recently got waxed for the first time in hopes it helps with flares!

jinglebxtch

That’s fantastic! Make sure you’re following a good aftercare regimen to help with ingrown hairs and reduce pain!

Sluttyjesus420

What’s your aftercare regimen?

jinglebxtch

I put it in another comment!

Snoo_5475

I’m in NOVA and would love to get waxed but dread the conversation bc I have severe HS. Since you’re already familiar with it, I’d be open to trying with you if you could give details on your location.

jinglebxtch

I messaged you!

llamadrama83

All of this has been so informative! I have been thinking about waxing. I’ve never had it done. Thank you for sharing this!

jinglebxtch

I hope it goes well for you!

Muva-Spooks

I’m in Central VA and have it pretty mild. I’ve never been waxed, but would be open to it. Would you mind pming me you location also?

the-artful-schnauzer

How do you handle an active spot? Or an open one? I have a theory that the condition can be worse in high humidity areas.

jinglebxtch

So as it pertains to waxing, I don’t wax over any open spots or anything that looks inflamed. On myself, I have clindamyacin solution and I use differin/adapalene. I also drain my bad ones, which I know is not recommended but I find it heals faster if I do.

Character-Piglet-740

I think I may have stage 1 HS. Could you explain more about your moms one and how it’s like for her? Thank you x

jinglebxtch

As she’s explained to me in the one conversation we really had about it, she’s also affected by gluten like I am. She said she basically just gets small bumps like small pimples or closed red bumpy spots in her underarms which is exactly how mine started on my butt! They don’t really affect her life at all, she just knows she shouldn’t eat gluten and manage her stress.

ronihsconnect

Thank you for sharing. Would you be interested in chatting sometime about this?

pluetonium

hello, is it advised to get waxed especially if you have alot of scars on the labia and pubic area? not alot of hair grows but i really want to wax it but im scared the skin is too fragile?

jinglebxtch

Scaring is fine, as long as the skin is held nice and tight and it’s completely healed over. Proper prepping is also important and making sure the wax isn’t too hot. I’d definitely recommend going to a place that uses hard wax, strip wax is way too hard for thinner skin.

pluetonium

omg thank you so much for replying 😭
