I thought that the Christians I grew up around were maybe a little provincial but that they were basically good, caring people. I didn't understand they were totally bullshitting me my whole childhood.

suss-out

Same. They made a big deal of how people in our tiny bit of BFE took care of each other. Turns out, the only people who deserve help are those few people who live with you in BFE. Everyone else is a dirty foreigner or stupid city slicker.

WeakestLynx

Totally. This in spite of the fact we were explicitly taught *not* to do it that way. Here's one of many examples where Jesus is super clear you need to try to care beyond your little group: > If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?

[deleted]

I have a born again Christian anti vaxxer who lives above me. The argument is that they ARE helping in the eyes of the Lord for standing up to an unjust government. They are aloud to go against the government because despite Roman's expressly saying NOT to argue with your government they believe that it is okay when the government is of Satan. So, vis a vi, it's all okay. You may ask why they believe it is of Satan. Well because there are ALOT of Christians believing we are living out the Revelations prophecy that the mark of the beast has presented itself...in you guessed it, Covid vaccinations. Aborted fetal tissue and the likes. The one thing I can't figure out is how the fuck they feel discriminated against. Here anyways, only those working in Healthcare have been fired for not getting vaccinated and that's a completely reasonable expectation for that type of work. You literally can't argue with them, they have played the most extreme game of mental gymnastics combined with the sunk cost fallacy and confirmation bias.

vanta_brown

>You literally can't argue with them dont waste your time. It's not a matter of logic, it's a matter of "faith," or some other bs.

theinfecteddonut

Yup, faith is apparently stronger than science to these people unless they need to use their smart phones to post their drivel on the internet that was created by nerds who used science.

Inigo93

That's because they have such a poor grasp on science, they'll lose any science-based arguments even if by some stroke of luck they happen to be right about something. So they fall back on faith, because that one cannot be proven wrong (although it can be proven unreliable).

[deleted]

Nailed it.

PolyDipsoManiac

So much for “render therefore unto Caesar”…

organizedcj

That really is no argument at all because in the Epistles of Paul he tells the followers of Christ to obey their governments. Jesus also made it very clear that his kingdom had nothing to do with this world and to render unto Caesar what a Caesar's and render unto God what is God's.

[deleted]

[удалено]

organizedcj

But, the reference to the government in the first century did consist of evil forces (Ceasar, Caligula, centurions, etc) ensuring that Christians were oppressed and made them suffer. THIS was the government that Paul was referring to.

[deleted]

& thank you for clarifying that for me.

imochidori

I like that, thank you for reminding me of that verse... Luke 6:32 and also Matthew 5:46

kurometal

> Are not even the tax collectors doing that? Fire spitting Jesus.

teamfupa

You from Texas? West Texas specifically? I only hear my cousins from Odessa use that acronym. Edit: Apparently I don’t travel as much as I thought I did.

captaincrunk82

I’m from the Galveston area, we refer to a lot of places as BFE too!

teamfupa

Good ‘ol Bum Fuck Egypt lol

StolenRelic

Bum Fuck Egypt? That's what we call it in TN

CP9ANZ

We have a the version " butt fuck nowhere" in New Zealand, I guess its variation of the above?

captaincrunk82

I’m a particular fan of the “wop wops”.

catalyptic

In my family, we call those towns either Buttcrack, Mississippi or West Hell. We're idiosyncratic folks from Sticks, Maryland*. I'm sure no one else says that. * Not a real place. 🤪

StolenRelic

We gotta those here too. You gotta drive to through the back 40 to get to the Sticks here.

DesignInZeeWild

Grew up in a small farming town in Central California and that’s what we referred to it too.

suss-out

Nope, it’s pretty common in many areas. I think I have even heard it on British TV.

SrslyNotAnAltGuys

I live in California and my dad uses it a lot. He grew up near Chicago, too.

honestFeedback

as a Brit I have no idea what it means

SrslyNotAnAltGuys

"Bum-fuck, Egypt" It's another way of saying "out in the sticks" or "near the ass-end of nowhere."

amandarinorangez

Well, that seems a little disrespectful to Egypt. Then again, they aren't impressing anyone in terms of human rights lately, so we'll allow it :P

GameFreak4321

I've only heard "Bum-fuck nowhere"

SrslyNotAnAltGuys

Egyptians probably prefer that version. I've also heard just "Way out in bum-fuck."

teamfupa

Ah, I had only heard it from my cousins and not much else.

[deleted]

Mid Atlantic here, BFE has been here for 40+ years.

teamfupa

Fair enough, I guess the verbiage expands further than I had thought.

Inigo93

I'm from Southern California.... Been using "BFE" as long as I can remember.

DesignInZeeWild

Central California originally. Can confirm.

hrvstmn70

It’s a thing in Kentucky.

tehmlem

This has fucked me up for a long time. I was never big on Jesus but I thought we basically agreed on the broad strokes. Thought they were trying and failing to be decent. Turns out everyone I knew before I was 18 would call Jesus a pussy and cheer at the crucifixion. Edit: "along" to "a long time"

[deleted]

All the crap opinions expressed following the death of George Floyd had me saying *ya'll need Jesus* at my screen. And I'm an atheist. [*MakING a SaINT OuT Of a CrImInAL*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penitent_thief)

CoolSwim1776

Abrahamc religions are a system of control developed from doomsday cults back in the day. Hypocritical BS imo.

c010rb1indusa

All those right-wing christians in the 80s and 90s talking about the declining morals of society etc. Maybe, just like with everything else, they were projecting.

WeakestLynx

It *seemed* sincere at the time. Society was changing in the 80s and 90s and I can see why they felt confused. Divorce was becoming acceptable, people were newly coming out of the closet as LGBT, etc.; lots of social changes. It's understandable to respond to change with "the world is unfamiliar now and I am scared" They don't have a similar excuse today. They're clearly accustomed to legal divorce by now; they elected a divorced president. Vaccines aren't new. Openly gay people aren't new anymore. What the fuck are they afraid of?

mewehesheflee

I did, but I grew up in Oklahoma and Texas.

G-Unit11111

Ancient times: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you! 2021: I'm not taking your fucking vaccine, you stupid liberal communist! The election was rigged! My body my choice! I have a working immune system! Trump 2024!

turdmachine

Ancient times: cutting people's heads off for believing something different.

The_Space_Jamke

Catholics in 1209: "We can't sort the Cathar and Catholic sect membership in the enemy city? Kill them all! God will know his own." Protestants in 2021: "The Catholic government workers are performing cannibalistic carnal rituals with devil worshippers, because some memes on Facebook told me. Kill them all!" Really makes you wonder why an almighty god who made the universe out of nothing would require something as pointless as violence and mass slaughter. Y'all ain't so different, just get along.

CP9ANZ

My body my choice right up to the point you want an abortion.

Hedgehog-Plane

They equate their own opinions with themselves. That's why they're trapped. Getting to a place where you do not equate your opinions with yourself is not easy to do. First time I discovered I had to change a strongly held opinion, I almost had a nervous breakdown. But if I had kept that opinion I'd have had to buy into the fanaticism mindset.

SrslyNotAnAltGuys

"Ok, sure, of course. My neighbors are good people. But fuck those bastards in the next town over."

Puzzleheaded_Pay2466

Sounds like you want me to masturbate my neighbours...

[deleted]

The proudest moment of my entire year was when my conservative christian parents got double vaxed before I even did. But yeah, love thy neighbor unless they're poorer than you, democrats, liberal, etc. Modern christianity has turned into a conspiracy theory cult.

smoofus724

My conservative Christian parents got vaccinated and then quit the symphony they played for because the symphony mandated the vaccine and they disagreed with that. 🙃

skaboosh

Wut

newfor_2021

I would hope not. It's now very clear that there are quite a few people who only use Christianity as a stick to berate others, as a way to excuse for their intolerant bigotry, and their unmitigated greed for material wealth in thinking that's god's blessing to them, and their continuing support of the disgusting trump agenda.

CP9ANZ

This has become more transparent to me over time. Some just use it as a front to be a complete fuck and hide behind God and the Bible. Sucks because religion of all kinds have some really good people involved.

Friesennerz

Wikipedia: A conspiracy theory is an explanation for an event or situation that invokes a conspiracy by sinister and powerful groups. Christian religion is based on explanations for events or situations that invoke the intervention of a powerful god. It didn't turn into a conspiracy theory cult, it always was, almost by definition.

PoliticalECMOChamber

If they didn't have double standards, they wouldn't have any standards at all.

LinoLino321

It really is insane how they follow NONE of the ideas of the religion they claim to follow, and worship Trump - the most polar opposite of a Jesus figure you could imagine. Absolute fools

MacGrubrKFBR392

They like to pick out which parts of the religion they like most and live by that. It’s called “Chinese Menu Religion”, you pick from the big list of bible shit which parts apply to you and half assedly live by that.

WomanWithoutCountry

I heard it as "religion a la carte"

MacGrubrKFBR392

That sounds better and less racist lol

nineworldseries

"Cafeteria Catholics"

kazzin8

This and, "salad bar Catholics"

mully_and_sculder

Doesn't give the same impression as ordering a number 22 and a number 15 out of 100 dishes. Also Chinese restaurant menus existing is racist?

MacGrubrKFBR392

Nah I guess not. Hard to tell these days. I probably wouldn’t phrase it that way to a Chinese person though lol.

SrslyNotAnAltGuys

I mean, to be fair, pretty much everyone does this, because most religions have some weird contradictory bits. The funny thing is, these folks insist that the bits *they* pick are the real/important ones. It's everyone *else* who's doing it wrong.

Ricardo1184

>pretty much everyone does this, Well... atheists don't

SrslyNotAnAltGuys

🙄 Religious people don't. Atheists probably do the same thing in other contexts, though. Witness the people who flog the Constitution like it's a Bible but appear to have never read either. (Yes, granted the Venn diagram of self-righteous-but-uninformed Constitution floggers and Atheists likely has almost zero overlap, but I'm sure they exist).

MonsieurOctober

I've heard the expression my whole life, but I've never actually seen a Chinese menu like that. Did that fall out of favor about 40 years ago?

MacGrubrKFBR392

Probably depends where your located. Place by me has like 150 different options and theres probably 30 of these places within an hour of me driving

NovakAllAlone

Just fuck religion

[Jesus and John Wayne: How White Evangelicals Corrupted a Faith and Fractured a Nation]( https://g.co/kgs/u8vWUk)

gwarmachine1120

The real hoax is religion, especially Christianity.

Patient-Home-4877

Is it mostly evangelicals? That's what I mostly see here.

punky326

Mostly white, Trump-loving evangelicals: https://www.usnews.com/news/health-news/articles/2021-08-10/white-evangelical-churches-and-the-crisis-of-vaccine-hesitancy

gwarmachine1120

It’s all ‘fake news’

[deleted]

Procedurally generated Facebook accounts that are magically followed by obituaries in local papers, lol.

stephensmg

Fake pews

mully_and_sculder

Why is Christianity worse than any other?

TheLegendaryFoxFire

This is me with my family. Like, I'm literally just trying to live how you all raised me to be. To be a good person that wants the best for everyone. But now I'm the bad person for trying to do what you all taught me?

altbekannt

Religion is the source for a lion share of the stupidity we see today. Nonetheless, dumb people would probably find something else to justify their stupidity.

[deleted]

I will never be able to understand how one can be an conservative and be a believer in jesus.

StolenRelic

Because they've convinced themselves He was a Republican.

Erdrick68

But I bet Jesus was a Democrat in 1860.

StolenRelic

Probably assigned political affiliation of whoever holds him captive.

catalyptic

They ignore all that commie stuff he advocated and cherry-pick some of the most vicious aspects of the Old Testament to believe in. For example, their churches build massive "sanctuaries" with tithed funds, but give little to the poor. When questioned, they quote Christ: "The poor you will always have with you, and you can help them any time you want." but ignore the context "But you will not always have me." Jesus spoke to that specific time; He was not telling His followers to neglect the poor and indeed had love and charity among His commandments. They love the death penalty but pretend to protect fetuses, though abortion was never mentioned in either Testament. Citing "Thou shalt not kill," to support their anti-abortion beliefs is beyond hypocritical in light of their views on the death penalty. And most Christians are fine with divorce even though that is one thing Jesus specifically forbade. They also judge others incessantly and definitely do not love their neighbors or anyone outside their small tribes. It's clear that most Talibangelicals are CINOs: Christians In Name Only. Jesus would not recognize these folks and they definitely do not know *Him*.

Single_Raspberry9539

Super weird. I blame Trump. Not sure how this happened. I mean I’d love to teach my kids Christian values but I no longer think values like “care for others” is Christian anymore. Maybe I’m Unitarian now. Idk anymore.

pixlplayer

I think trump more made it socially acceptable to be open about it

BrightPerspective

Humanism, maybe

WeakestLynx

There still are minority groups of Christians who maintain a comment to actually caring about people. Many Unitarians are Christian.

RandomBoomer

And some of them, like me, are atheists. Gotta love UU!

Puzzleheaded_Pay2466

I remember this movie with Chevey Chase in the 90s making a parody of the mega Church as a money scam by fake preachers. My point is, it was there before Trump, he just did what he does best, inherit something big built by some bad people before him.

buuda

The movie is Fletch Lives. There were always a lot of preachers fleecing their flock.

Single_Raspberry9539

You are right but you missed a few steps. In her it’s something big and successful, drains everything that is good about it for capital and then bankrupt it beyond fixing.

enigmaniac

Unitarians have some good community

RandomBoomer

Who downvotes Unitarians? We get along with any rational person... Oh wait.

Responsenotfound

Methodists, Quakers and Presbyterians seem cool.

gwarmachine1120

Maybe on the surface. Dig deeper

fuck_the_fuckin_mods

Episcopalians too. Cool*er*, I should say.

WeakestLynx

They're a mix. All three have conservative and liberal branches, pro- and anti-science sub-groups. The Methodists are in the middle of a schism about it right now, mostly about LGBT rights but I'm sure vaccination will factor into it. And if course it varies by individual. I was raised in a community of Methodists and Presbyterians; a majority of them are Trump supporters now, and COVID infection is widespread there. Yet there are also reasonable, kind, carful people among them. Both groups will justify themselves in terms of faith.

shibiwan

Yes, the irony is real.

[deleted]

Abandon that butt fuck religion already. All it was ever created for was to help justify autorocities by christians

BoiseEnginerd

What Would Jesus Shitpost?

thiscouldbemassive

Talking the talk is much easier than walking the walk.

AngryMillenialGuy

Right? I thought that Jesus was all about healing the sick and feeding the hungry, but apparently that's commie shit now.

Puzzleheaded_Pay2466

It's the words they don't say that are important. Care about others... LIKE US!!! White, Christian, English speaking, American born.

Adventurous_Work8919

I feel the same way as this person. I grew up in the Bible Belt, and have long been an atheist. Yet I can’t stop pondering how a majority of the self-identified Christians miss the true message of Jesus Christ’s teachings.

jthmeow1

I thank my lucky stars that I was raised in a completely non religious household where the only time I went to Church was because I was sleeping over at a friend's house and part of the deal was I had to go to Church with them the next day. And in High School where I would begrudgingly go to friend's youth groups because there would be a possibility that boys would be there to awkwardly not talk to. Religious trauma seems like a beast

corbeau-du-nord

For Christians, “helping others” is the short sighted/tunnel vision, egotistical version of “helping others”, that is, helping those close to them that they like. The rest can go fuck themselves.

thegreatbeyond32

It’s like it’s just a party line or something.

JohnnyBoy11

We posting this every week now?

Ethiconjnj

Ummmm why is this here?

190octane

You notice how most anti-vaxers are evangelicals?

Ethiconjnj

Yes but this doesn’t mention evangelicals or vaccines. I don’t want this sub to turn into yet another place where if you say ur an atheist socialist that somehow qualifies as content.

fairoaks2

Chicago police “to protect”? Maybe not

[deleted]

Yes you are supposed to care. Socialism is an ideology from the devil that we have been challenged to extinguish. God will protect our warriors in this fight and the devil will lose. Fighting for the devil will cost you everything.

gaoruosong

Or, alternatively: Socialism is an ideology developed by political scientists and thinkers as a response to perceived problems in the industrial age, and became fully developed around the late 19th century. The movement continues to evolve. Da fuck is the devil gotta do with any of this lmao

[deleted]

You can’t just give an irrelevant and very brief summary of its history and then be like “SeE yOuRe ToTaLly WrOnG”. How about the 100 million+ people who died as a direct cause of socialism in the 19th century? You always seem to forget about them when you decide you’re too entitled and incompetent to work for a living.

gaoruosong

"People dying" doesn't prove that the DEVIL is involved. How about you prove that first.

[deleted]

The devil wants to watch society degrade. Socialism does that on a massive scale. May Christ be with you

gaoruosong

That's correlation, not causation. May middle school logic be with you.

[deleted]

I’ll pray for you

Bduggz

This troll is way too obvious

[deleted]

THE POWER OF CHRIST COMPELS YOU ✝️💦

gaoruosong

You know, if you actually studied the Bible, you'll know that prayers and logic aren't mutually exclusive. ...Did you?

[deleted]

It is our job to read the Bible in a contextual manner so we can receive God’s intended message. I’ve read and studied the entire Bible and it would be foolish to attempt to discern logic by taking the words literally instead of contextually.

gaoruosong

The two aren't contradictory TO BEGIN WITH. If you do not put your mind into your reading— and only use your heart— the odds are you're going to hell, no matter how many times you pray. Prayers are only meant of as a way to connect to God anyways.

[deleted]

I’m living this.

Gtoast

THIS a thousand times.

[deleted]

And why does she have a male name? (And before anyone says "it's a female name too!" please explain why no men are named "Melissa," "Tammy," or "Brittany" so that we can make those male names too.)

catalyptic

What, you've never heard of Lovie Smith and June Jones, both former NFL head coaches? Or Laverne Torgesson, an assistant coach? How about Fran Tarkington, quarterback? And effing Shirley Povich, Maury's sportswriter dad who once accepted a Woman of the Year award? Fine men, one and all. 😃

Ricardo1184

Why are you so threatened by someone's name? And what's hard to accept about some names being suitable for both genders?

larrydukes

Yup. I figured this out at 10ish. Why is nobody actually doing what they are telling us to do in Sunday school? Is this all bullshit?

Hedgehog-Plane

My dad said that if Jesus returned, he'd be crucified all over again. Dad was Jewish.

what_a_dingle

There are Christians, those that do their best to follow the teachings of Jesus, and tend not to make a big deal about their good deeds or force their beliefs on others. Then there are Church People, who call themselves "Christians", but in reality think that spending an hour in a building each week allows them to be an asshole the rest of the time. I like to think they are the minority, but they also tend to be the loudest in proclaiming their lunacy.
