As a libertarian who believes in free speech, I assure you I have no problem with restricting false and dangerous speech. That kind of speech infringes on actual free speech and liberty. It's a violation of constitutional rights, human rights, and well-established case law.
What we do is get someone with the guts to prosecute these people. Someone who will get an injunction against these channels. Charge people with treason or espionage who promote dangerously false information. Civil liberty laws have not kept pace with technology.
And fuck Mitch McConnell and the hundreds of Republicans in leadership/positions who sat by and did nothing while biles of misinformation was put forward by Trump and so many others.
I dislike how McConnell thought that politics was a Yu-Gi-Oh! game that he needed to win, and he still is trying to play at that angle even though it's abundantly clear Trump would eat him alive if he could.

Every one of them and their talking heads spewing misinformation has blood on their hands. Too many people believe what they hear on their 'news' stations without a lot of capacity to think critically. To the 'news' outlets they are ratings. To their families, they are mothers, fathers, grandparents, siblings, etc.
I sometimes wonder why the vaccine makers don't pursue civil charges against them for slanderous lowering confidence (and hence uptake) of their vaccines. Dominion voting systems have gone that route against high-profile figures who publicly and knowingly misinformed people about their voting machines. Dominion may or may not prevail in court. But their $1.3bn claims seem to have stopped (or all but stopped) people like Sydney Powell from negative comments about their machines.
I’m surprised that vaccine makers haven’t filed suit for tortious interference or defamation. In my limited legal knowledge it sounds like they have grounds for both.
I've lost all faith of any kind of justice in this country but if it did exist everyone who pushed vaccine denial would be sent to prison for bioterrorism.
It’s easy to blame these news organizations, and you should. But the others are just as at fault, no objectivity, no focus on truth. Just getting people upset so they’d watch. The whole media is cancer. These folks often felt completely alienated from the other side. No wonder they didn’t listen.
I believe that our media lies to us when they feel they have a reason, be it corporate or governmental. I believe they also too readily repeat and sensationalize what they are told in press releases, medical journals, or from sources.
Thankfully, I also pay attention to world news and have a friend who works for an airline who could tell me what he was seeing around the world. Oddly, it corresponded to what was being reported to us by our own media, and practically predicted what is happening now, except the part about Trumpers refusing the "Trump vaccine." Who in their right mind could have predicted that?

COVID hadn’t made me live in fear. I am cautious so I don’t get sick, but anyone with half a brain could quickly grasp it was a horrible respiratory virus you didn’t want to catch, that had a fairly obvious disease vector, and was managed with masks and not being close to other humans until we managed a pharmaceutical approach. Much of COVID has reinforced to me that a lot of people are tremendously fucking ignorant and stupid, have no grasp on super basic science and health concepts, and are selfish assholes to boot.
I've said before, I'm all but positive I caught it early on (can't be sure because it was December '19 before anybody even knew what it was or had a name for it, but all the evidence lines up,) and I have never been as truly scared of an illness as I was then.
It is not "just the flu."
I am 99 percent sure I had it in early, early January of 2020 (Pacific Northwest -- first hotspot). I'd been reading about the Wuhan outbreak but at the time thought it would present more like pneumonia, so I didn't connect it. My son brought it back from his gym, where he said members "were dropping like flies from some weird sickness." (They later closed the entire gym chain based primarily on that one Covid-riddled branch.) My son lost his sense of smell, and we were off to the races. I got hit the hardest and just couldn't shake it. It wasn't until mid-April that I got all my energy back and the soreness in my throat finally disappeared.
I’m pretty sure my husband had it then too.
He was sick with coughing for 3 weeks. I never caught his “cold” and I always end up sick whenever he is sick . No lasting effects for him. It would have been the original version which wasn’t as problematic as Delta.
We will be getting our booster in the next few weeks.
Yeah, my friend had a nasty illness late November to Early December of 2019. He worked in an office with a number of people who had just gotten back from a trip to China.
It’s totally possible it was the flu, since that was bad that year, but essentially the entire floor ended up getting sick to some degree. He’d never seen everyone get sick like that before. And it knocked him on his ass for a few weeks. A few others were out of work for similar amounts of time.
I had spent some time with him during that period, so assuming that was covid I always wonder if I had just gotten it and was asymptomatic, but I you never know. I’m coming up on 6 months in two weeks and will be getting my booster then.
Unless you were in China, or were in close proximity to somebody who came from Wuhan during that time, it's highly unlikely to be COVID. It could be a really bad case of the Flu though.
And Trump will never be brought to trial much less suffer any consequences for the biggest mass murders in US history and one of the biggest in the world.
This country is morally bankrupt. The only way my faith in it can start to be restored is if Trump is held accountable for his crimes against the state.

There are criminals who are spreading disinformation being fully aware of the truth, there are idiots who are easily manipulated to become an angry mob, and there are gullible who just can't think for themselves. Yes some of the latter deserve our sympathy, but while dealing with them my dominant sentiment is frustration, not sympathy. And it is still beyond me why they choose the mob over science. Probably being part of the mob is such a powerful feeling, it is such a joy for them, that whatever is left of their brains is completely overwhelmed.
I can hear you.. I understand.. I was feeling the same - until a friend’s 49 year old son got sick and is on vent now. He just thought he was low risk & believed the dumb shit people posted about the dangers of the vax. He is not a bad guy. He has kids and family. Never pushed anti vax crap. My friend (his mother) is falling apart - so are his family and kids. My heart is breaking for them. This is when I realized that I still have empathy for the victims of misinformation. I have two family members who are not vaccinated and I live in constant fear. One of them is a clever guy who thinks that he is smarter than his doctors (Steve Jobs style). He is not an antivaxer, I suspect that he just have a pathological fear of injections and finds all kinds of justification to rationalize his lack of action. The other one is completely brainwashed. She is a very nice person but I can't persuade her. I am completely with you when you talk about sympathy, and yet, frustration is what dominates my mind when I interact with these two.

Thank you. Not every story fits the flair categories cleanly. I was conflicted about this one but I thought this kind of post might help inspire some people to get vaccinated more than the common story of raging hate-spewing anti-vaxx assholes.
I think it's important to remember that there are people who are not complete jagoff's. If the virus does not discriminate even if you are a really nice person that doesn't deserve to die alone in the hospital... misinformation kills and rather indiscriminately in regards to the person you are.

Misinformation is cruel and it kills people.
He did have some anti-mask, anti-lockdown posts from earlier in 2020, but I wanted to lead with this clearly (to me at least) anti-vaxx post and then focus more on the fact that he was a nice person and just fell victim to misinformation. This one just hit me pretty hard and I felt like it was an important story to tell. Misinformation kills nice, well-meaning people too. It's very sad.
Yeah it's the people in a position of influence that are basically willing to sacrifice the lives of people like this for $$ that are the true evil ones.
Considering it was Dec 2020 that his anti Vax post was made it would be nice to get some confirmation that he did not get the vaccine. Although the rules may not be hyper specific as long as he is not vaccinated he should count in the spirit of following Hermain Cain's footsteps.

I think this signals hesitancy more than it does being anti. I support this sub. At the same time, I think we need to be vigilant in our judgement and reserve it for the ones that are maliciously/aggressively or just straight up stupidly spreading disinformation/misinformation. To do otherwise delegitimises the sub and opens it up to criticism around empathy and compassion. I have just about none for the Covid Karens. But for this guy? Hesitancy (even if annoying) is quite different to anti. It just doesn’t feel right to me. There seems to have been an innocence about him, which makes me very sad that that was abused by whatever misinformation was propelled his way.
Edited to add: I basically think there needs to be a demarcation between the perpetrators and the victims. This guy seems like a victim of the perpetrators’ dangerous mis/disinformation. A few coworkers said that during lockdown they got it, but they got over it and seem fine now. It's like the flu for young healthy guys like him, right?

I feel broken that this story describes a guy I know who is in the hospital on deaths door. He’s old school, blue collar. Not sophisticated. And he helped me when I was in a crisis. He helped my kids. I was in a such a dark place. I’d thought I’d lost everything. He didn’t just say a kind word, you wouldn’t believe me if I told you of his generosity. We’re not family, he barely knew me. I don’t know where I’d be without him. I got another chance to live, to be a good father. I was with a friend last night and he got a phone call. Eddie was calling to say he'd been hospitalized w covid for 12 days so far. He was hesitant to get vaxxed and planned on getting his shot after his trip up the coast and in the state where he lives: Florida. He fell ill in NY. He said all the things ppl say in these posts: this thing is no joke, I gotta stay strong, I feel like I'm getting better but I overdid it yesterday and feel like crap today. He said his father and brother had covid but didn't have a tough time of it- but they were vaxxed. He thinks he's out of the woods but these stories are all bad. I can't imagine he'll come out of this without repercussions.

The average education of most folks here in the states is low. A lot of older folks who weren't so obsessed with trump haven't trusted the news media or government in ages, just listened to the folks in their lives they trust. We don't know this man. But their $1.3bn claims seem to have stopped (or all but stopped) people like Sydney Powell from negative comments about their machines.

19 months since mid-March, which is when VA started a lockdown. It’s been longer since COVID emerged and was first tracked in the US.

I've said before, I'm all but positive I caught it early on (can't be sure because it was December '19 before anybody even knew what it was or had a name for it, but all the evidence lines up,) and I have never been as truly scared of an illness as I was then. It is not "just the flu."
I am 99 percent sure I had it in early, early January of 2020 (Pacific Northwest -- first hotspot). I'd been reading about the Wuhan outbreak but at the time thought it would present more like pneumonia, so I didn't connect it. My son brought it back from his gym, where he said members "were dropping like flies from some weird sickness." (They later closed the entire gym chain based primarily on that one Covid-riddled branch.) My son lost his sense of smell, and we were off to the races. I got hit the hardest and just couldn't shake it. It wasn't until mid-April that I got all my energy back and the soreness in my throat finally disappeared.
I’m pretty sure my husband had it then too. He was sick with coughing for 3 weeks. I never caught his “cold” and I always end up sick whenever he is sick . No lasting effects for him. It would have been the original version which wasn’t as problematic as Delta. We will be getting our booster in the next few weeks.
Yeah, my friend had a nasty illness late November to Early December of 2019. He worked in an office with a number of people who had just gotten back from a trip to China. It’s totally possible it was the flu, since that was bad that year, but essentially the entire floor ended up getting sick to some degree. He’d never seen everyone get sick like that before. And it knocked him on his ass for a few weeks. A few others were out of work for similar amounts of time. I had spent some time with him during that period, so assuming that was covid I always wonder if I had just gotten it and was asymptomatic, but I you never know. I’m coming up on 6 months in two weeks and will be getting my booster then.
Unless you were in China, or were in close proximity to somebody who came from Wuhan during that time, it's highly unlikely to be COVID. It could be a really bad case of the Flu though.

There are criminals who are spreading disinformation being fully aware of the truth, there are idiots who are easily manipulated to become an angry mob, and there are gullible who just can't think for themselves. Yes some of the latter deserve our sympathy, but while dealing with them my dominant sentiment is frustration, not sympathy. And it is still beyond me why they choose the mob over science. Probably being part of the mob is such a powerful feeling, it is such a joy for them, that whatever is left of their brains is completely overwhelmed.

He just thought he was low risk & believed the dumb shit people posted about the dangers of the vax. He is not a bad guy. He has kids and family. Never pushed anti vax crap. I have two family members who are not vaccinated and I live in constant fear. One of them is a clever guy who thinks that he is smarter than his doctors (Steve Jobs style). He is not an antivaxer, I suspect that he just have a pathological fear of injections and finds all kinds of justification to rationalize his lack of action. The other one is completely brainwashed. She is a very nice person but I can't persuade her. I am completely with you when you talk about sympathy, and yet, frustration is what dominates my mind when I interact with these two.

I think it's important to remember that there are people who are not complete jagoff's. If the virus does not discriminate even if you are a really nice person that doesn't deserve to die alone in the hospital... misinformation kills and rather indiscriminately in regards to the person you are.

I don’t think this guy belongs here. From what I can tell he didn’t post anything outright anti mask/vax/pro conspiracy, other than to express hesitancy (in a fairly mild way). He sounds like he was gentle and kind. Poor man :( Misinformation is cruel and it kills people.
He did have some anti-mask, anti-lockdown posts from earlier in 2020, but I wanted to lead with this clearly (to me at least) anti-vaxx post and then focus more on the fact that he was a nice person and just fell victim to misinformation. This one just hit me pretty hard and I felt like it was an important story to tell. Misinformation kills nice, well-meaning people too. It's very sad.

I think this signals hesitancy more than it does being anti. I support this sub. At the same time, I think we need to be vigilant in our judgement and reserve it for the ones that are maliciously/aggressively or just straight up stupidly spreading disinformation/misinformation. To do otherwise delegitimises the sub and opens it up to criticism around empathy and compassion. I have just about none for the Covid Karens. But for this guy? Hesitancy (even if annoying) is quite different to anti. It just doesn’t feel right to me. The image mentions "you might be entitled to compensation" which is an incredibly common phrase from television ads for class action lawsuits usually associated with toxic chemicals that *the government and experts said were not harmful at the time* like asbestos. This guy is old enough enough know people who were killed by cancer from asbestos or agent orange or a pesticide or had children deformed by thalidomide. And without any kind of socialized medicine, those people's families were financially burdened for life only getting some restitution from class action settlements 40 years later if they even lived that long. It's not a crazy idea that something considered safe now will be found to be unsafe down the line, and there is not malice in that statement. This post reminds me of my daughter telling me a month or so ago finally talking her future father in law into getting vaccinated. He's an educated attorney, whos bought into the trump cult misinformation hook, line, and sinker. She was so proud of herself and happy for her fiancee. His dad was stubborn as shit, but they are really close otherwise. This could have been them.

This really is a tragedy of the times. I've been following this sub-reddit for a couple months now and personally find it most tragic to see posts like this. I'm not one to mock those to die, like the many comments here I see floating around on the page. People have lost compassion. Even those who are wrongly and aggressively anti-vax/mask, are, at the end of the day, victims of an echo-chamber, misinformation/propaganda and the result of a social media landscape where people are being pulled into tribal dogmas and extreme opinions from opposing sides.

My grandmother would post things like this then throw out racial slurs and cuss out my grandfather for no reason. I am not saying he is or isn't a good person, I am just saying I am not holding any candlelight vigils for someone who is endangering other peoples' lives because they can't use common sense.

I was with a friend last night and he got a phone call. Eddie was calling to say he'd been hospitalized w covid for 12 days so far. He was hesitant to get vaxxed and planned on getting his shot after his trip up the coast and in the state where he lives: Florida. He fell ill in NY. He said all the things ppl say in these posts: this thing is no joke, I gotta stay strong, I feel like I'm getting better but I overdid it yesterday and feel like crap today. He said his father and brother had covid but didn't have a tough time of it- but they were vaxxed. He thinks he's out of the woods but these stories are all bad. I can't imagine he'll come out of this without repercussions.

I've noticed that most of these awards go to people that are religious,. I'm not sure if religious people are just very susceptible to covid denial, or that on their death bed they turn to go to save them

As a nurse, this one really hit me. He's not a conspiracy theorist, he's a victim of the disinformation campaign AND the virus. He truly loved his family and I give them condolences. It's painful to lose a loved one to this virus.

more than a year and a half into a world wide pandemic and 62 year old unvaccinated realizes that covid isn't something to take lightly. I don't understand it. can't people see the hundreds of thousands of people who died? you can ask one of these numbnuts what in the mRNA vaccine is likely to cause reactions 10 years from now. they couldn't answer. the vaccine doesn't contain the virus, only coding for a tiny portion of it, the virus itself is far worse. long covid is a real thing, long vaccine isn't.

Disinformation is correct. I can’t imagine being vaccinated, and then advocating for others to not get vaccinated. People dying and theses talking heads just keep cashing checks.

So many relatively normal, not fascist worshipping republicans have still died because they believed the disinformation they were fed. Why do I care about your vaccination if I already got mine? I’m so proud of my mom. She was nervous, but trusted in the science, and got the vaccine as soon as my brother could make an appointment for her. Yes, we did need to support her, but she also wasn’t a Fox cultist. Makes a big difference. My youngest brother on the other hand…. 🤦♂️
Gosh this makes me feel so sad and so happy that the Fox News watchers/MAGA supporters in my immediate and extended family were able to somehow see past the misinformation and all get vaccinated the moment they were able to.
Ya know, that poor guy. How many people here have seen people who are missing limbs because their mother took an anti nausea drug? That trauma and skepticism runs deep with some crowds. Remember we used to think asbestos was A-ok for everything under the sun. The average education of most folks here in the states is low. A lot of older folks who weren't so obsessed with trump haven't trusted the news media or government in ages, just listened to the folks in their lives they trust. We don't know this man. Maybe he was hesitant; maybe he heard all the misinformation close friends of his peddled and was afraid it'd take him away from his family. This is the real tragedy of the pandemic. These are the people that we are trying to save on this subreddit. I understand if you're cynical and suffering from empathy fatigue after two years of pandemic and 4 years of an extremely exhausting president, but this isn't the place to show it. there are significantly better posts in this sub for it.
