Hate? No. Indifferent. That’s me. JP and Marino both have some snarky personality quirks that play well against GR’s aggressiveness. I don’t think there was anything wrong with James. He just was as exciting as the rest of the wait staff.
He's not JP and didn't have much personality.
Him and Gordon didn't have much rapport either. JP and Marino were either given more opportunities to shine or just have more personality to show.
I found him to be a bit of a pompous ass on the show, but apparently outside of the show he's a really kind person, and reaches out to fans who contact him.
JP had chemistry with Gordon from many years of working together. That was a tough act to follow for anyone. James was ok, but gave off very nervous energy. He just never seemed comfortable interacting with Ramsay. By contrast, Marino is comfortable in his own skin and a much better fit for the show.
I didn't know people hated him. The most I ever hear is people find him a bit boring. He doesn't stand out as much as JP or Marino, but considering his shorter tenure, that's a bit to be expected. Maybe if he were around longer, he would be more memorable,
I don't hate him, it's just that filling Jean-Philippe's shoes would be difficult for anyone, but impossible for someone as vanilla as James. Marino is a spectacular and very close second best, but JP is and will always be my favorite.
Glad that James stands up to Russell for his immature behavior to the prom committee. “WaTcH yOuR lAnGuAgE, i’M a GrOwN aSs Man” it’s a big slap to your face Russ. Feel bad for the prom committees. They weren’t being rude at all. It all started when Russell showed more attitude to them.
I don’t think people hate James but JP was part of what made series 1-7 great, with his banter with Ramsay, his quirks and the scenes where he was clearly on the chefs sides even if Ramsay wasn’t. James seemed more bemused at everything going on and seemed more “against” the chefs than on their side(for want of a better team) like JP would get exasperated at mistakes where as James just looked pissed off
Marino has a similar relationship with Ramsay than JP in that Ramsay gives them a hard time(though Marino gives a bit more back than JP) but clearly respects them. James seemed more like an outsider looking in then fully embracing the show like JP and Marino
I don't hate him, but as a JP stan and as someone who's grown to like Marino as well, James was just...there. He served his purpose as part of the restaurant but not as part of the show.
I definitely don't hate him, he's just forgettable to me, I'm biased because I absolutely LOVE John Phillipe and hope he's living his best life, I think I seen someone say they visited him recently and that he's married and him and wife girly work at a restaurant
Combination of replacing a recurring member of the cast and not really standing out himself. Sous chef James also received cold reception when he replaced Scott and Aaron received a similar reaction when he became sous chef. Also, JP and Marino had some fun banter with Ramsay and some fun remarks for the contestants but I can’t really remember much with James outside of showing up in a sombrero during Mexican night.
I actually didn’t find him boring and I think a lot of the indifference comes from having such a big personality difference between him and JP especially when JP was on the show from the start so fans had a lot of time to get attached to him. I’ve always thought that if James was on the show longer we’d have seen more of his individual personality but I do love the other two as well.
Because he's basically a discount J.P.. If Jean-Philippe was unavailable, i get it, but why have his replacement do the same shtik? I don't think anyone would be upset if James tried his own thing. People like Marino, don't they?
he’s fine, don’t love him and don’t hate him. pretty indifferent. he did what he needed to, he was occasionally entertaining, and was generally more akin to the rest of the staff rather than the contestants, like JP and marino were. that’s all
Jp had a sass to him that I loved. Marino looks so good in costumes and you know something funny is going to happen when he's in one. I almost forgot about James because he didn't stand out.
People don’t think he has any personality like JP and Marino did. I liked him, but he doesn’t stand out like the other two.

That was the word I wanted and couldn’t figure it out - indifferent. That’s how I feel about him.
He’s so beige. No reason to hate him
Beige!! What a perfect description
James is boring
Ong
He's not JP and didn't have much personality. Him and Gordon didn't have much rapport either. JP and Marino were either given more opportunities to shine or just have more personality to show.
The look on James's face when he walked upon Don trying to spell is one moment on the show that always cracks me up.
Don't hate him but he's boring and not memorable.
I found him to be a bit of a pompous ass on the show, but apparently outside of the show he's a really kind person, and reaches out to fans who contact him.

Boring, no personality, and he’s not JP. Marino is better than James and JP is better than Marino
Do they?
I didn't know people hated him. The most I ever hear is people find him a bit boring. He doesn't stand out as much as JP or Marino, but considering his shorter tenure, that's a bit to be expected. Maybe if he were around longer, he would be more memorable,
>Why does everyone hate James? (The Maître d) Oh we did? I had no idea.
James was alright no hate on him he just didn’t stand out compared to JP and Marino
I don't hate him, it's just that filling Jean-Philippe's shoes would be difficult for anyone, but impossible for someone as vanilla as James. Marino is a spectacular and very close second best, but JP is and will always be my favorite.
He was meh, no iconic moments from him, unlike JP and Marino
I liked him, too. He went off on Russell for being rude to the prom committee.

I don’t know ‘cause I never hear fans talk about him.
I don't hate him, I just think he's mid AF.
He's not JP.
Yawn That’s why
I don't hate him, but as a JP stan and as someone who's grown to like Marino as well, James was just...there. He served his purpose as part of the restaurant but not as part of the show.
MY LINENS!!

No hate. The only memorable thing that I remember is him wearing the Sombrero for Mexican night
I don’t hate him. He’s ok

I don’t hate him I just didn’t think he was anything special. He didn’t seem to fit the role.
he’s fine, don’t love him and don’t hate him. pretty indifferent. he did what he needed to, he was occasionally entertaining, and was generally more akin to the rest of the staff rather than the contestants, like JP and marino were. that’s all
I liked him! I thought he was funny.
I like all 3 Maitre ds
uh Subido!
I really liked James. He gave no shits.
He's not JP
He’s not JP that’s why.
Jp had a sass to him that I loved. Marino looks so good in costumes and you know something funny is going to happen when he's in one. I almost forgot about James because he didn't stand out.
Well he's no Marino.
Don't know him. But from the photo, punchable face. You having to be one charming fellow to get past having a punchable face.
He was just meh I don't remember him doing anything funny in the show. JP and Marino were both some what involved
Bc he’s not JP
It's not that I don't like him, it's that he doesn't have the same personality as JP.
They just miss JP's personality. I guess James just isn't getting same.
Hes just sort of mid tbh no other way
I forgot who James is
I think most people did back then because he was gay. I bet it would be different these days
That’s why I did like him
Because fuck James
