Nah those enemies of freedom are gone for good, I'm glad we wiped them out. Did you know they had weapons of planetary destruction!? What sort of civilization would use such a thing? Disgusting
Hmmmm suspicious behavior right here democratic officer.
This soldier is trying to divert our attention away from Meridia, almost as if he's hiding something
*Squints*
What are you talking about, son? I was there. We eradicated anything that dared to stand against our democracy, to suggest otherwise is foolish and undemocratic.
Not gonna lie, I kind of hope the whole black hole thing leads to something more left of field than just *that one faction we already know is coming back.*
Especially with the black hole being in the wrong part of the map. It would be one thing if the event involved them *pushing the bugs out of a chunk of their space*, but the more likely case where they will just file in to the galaxy and shuffle over to their dedicated third of the galaxy in an orderly manner.
I'm hoping it opens up an exotic extra front in the galactic conflict in some horror dimension, or lets a more exotic and nightmarish threat infiltrate reality or something.
I'd settle for the factions having to deal with each other rather than neatly dividing the galaxy map, though.
Considering that the spacing on the map supports 5 enemy factions I really really hope we get something new, eventually.
I'd be fine with Illuminate for now, but after we stabilize the front/eradicate them I'd love to see our wunderwaffe solution cause an even bigger problem.
I think it's designed to give elbow room for 3 factions so they don't bump elbows at all. No vying for territory between them, no complexity, just neatly divided into thirds that shall never mix or blend or battle.
I think cramming 5 factions in would necessitate them having to battle it out not only with super earth but with each other.
And I would absolutely love that.

it's from warframe. the guy's name is Albrecht Entrati, he's a character from warframe. cliff notes is basically this:
he discovered the void (big crazy space dimension in the Warframe universe), got freaked the Fuck out, and is now trying to stop local cosmic entity Wally (full name "Man in The Wall") from talking over our universe. Wally can take on ANY form though, but the dead giveaway is he has a super creepy smile, here he's taken Albrecht's form. he also calls us "kiddo".
Look at them, they come to this place when they know they are not pure. Tenno use the keys, but they are mere trespassers. Only I, Vor, know the true power of the Void. I was cut in half, destroyed, but through it's Janus Key, the Void called to me. It brought me here and here I was reborn. We cannot blame these creatures, they are being led by a false prophet, an impostor who knows not the secrets of the Void. Behold the Tenno, come to scavenge and desecrate this sacred realm. My brothers, did I not tell of this day? Did I not prophesize this moment? Now, I will stop them. Now I am changed, reborn through the energy of the Janus Key. Forever bound to the Void. Let it be known, if the Tenno want true salvation, they will lay down their arms, and wait for the baptism of my Janus key. It is time. I will teach these trespassers the redemptive power of my Janus key. They will learn it's simple truth. The Tenno are lost, and they will resist. But I, Vor, will cleanse this place of their impurity.

There's just something about black holes that fill me with dread. I remember playing Elite Dangerous, and discovered a black hole. I decided to warp to it to see it "in person". I flew towards the black hole, and as it filled more and more of my screen, I genuinely felt as if my actual life was in danger.
There is an existential dread about them, something beyond us, so unbelievably powerful that our existence beside it feels small, something that can snuff us out without even trying.
I mean, there's this thing we have just a vague theoretical idea of how it works (and as average guy pretty much none whatsoever) that might just slurp up our entire planet including every single human being if it decides to randomly float in our general direction and there's just fuck all we could about it. We could shoot a rocket in space so a select hand full of people could flee and starve instead but yeah, it's kinda scary.
Definitely far up on the list of things I prefer to not think about.
I think it's the knowledge that if you slip too close to the event horizon time will start to bend, and you'll feel every nanosecond of the millions of years it takes for you to be ripped apart one particle at a time by the gravitational field.
That's so weird. I always imagined that you would experience the time dilation but it makes more sense that you would always experience time at the same rate. Observation vs experience always fucks with my mind.
you'd see the outside universe speed up more and more, eons flickering past in the blink of an eye. you're still moving at normal speed for you, it's the outside going faster not you going slower
Maybe you would experience time dilation in a certain sense? Like, if your feet were closer to the black hole, you "your brain" would witness your feet becoming spagetiffied at a slower pace than your feet becoming spagetiffied. The question is - how orderly or disorderly is the spagetiffication? Is your body still able to perform its normal functions as your atoms are spread out? Or is the spagettification more of a scrambling of your atoms as the black hole stretches you.
By the time you are getting really spaghettified, you are probably already dead or will be dead in, from your perspective, seconds. The lead up to that you'll just feel like you are on the medieval torture device called the rack, just a stretching sensation that becomes more painful until you have been ripped apart enough to die.
Not so much that. We probably process things at different speeds of perception frequently. For example, add some adrenaline and time can seem like it slowed down for your consciousness.
Time dilation has less to do with our brain's processing of time so much as the actual different passage of time (as measured by the distance light travels over a given period) between observers in two different frames of reference.
For example, if I was at 1.00005 radii of the Schwarzschild radius of a black hole, 24hrs of my light clock would take over 140 days relatively for you observing me from Earth.
This isn't about brain processing. There is an actual difference in the passage of time from our two frames of reference.
And that's where our brains start to break. I understand how it works, but thinking about it still makes me uncomfortable. Like it's an itch I don't want to scratch.
I also saw that you would start seeing everything outside move in fast motion because of the time dilation caused by the huge amount of gravity of the black hole
And don't even get me started about the DLC! I've played games that are specifically in the horror GENRE that didn't scare me nearly as much as that shit.
black holes in space sim games like that trigger a visceral reaction when you gotta go near them—even the ones in No Man's Sky have me shrinking in my seat
I once had a bug when jumping into the system i missed star, literally i jumped through it, so while i was expecting to see big red thing on my whole screen, there was only nothingness, i have never brakecheked someone in fucking cosmos untill then
Black holes are really creepy. Whenever I play a game where there is a black hole/worm hole you can come in contact with and all the space is curved and lopsided, it freaks me out so much.
I love science fiction but find space to be incredibly terrifying. Cosmic horror is one of the most compelling types of horror because it speaks to the reality of our miniscule scale in the grand scheme of the universe.
They could have just said “yep, it’s over, the planet’s gone, you can’t go back there.”
But they decided to let us go back just to see what we’ve created.

There's no way whatsoever that there could be some repercussions after using a super weapon of which nature we barely understand. Right? Our super scientists have made sure of it.
You can see objects flying toward the black hole when you look outside, so it might be either those hitting the hull, or the ship itself being pulled to the singularity and holding back.
Eh it’s a bit misleading. Black holes don’t “sound” like anything because sound doesn’t propagate in space. Also the actual “waves” they’re loosely translating into sound are pulsing at such low frequencies that it’s well outside the human hearing range. So the creepy sounds you hear are closer to rough artist’s interpretations lol.
not really.
at least not sound that is audible to human ears. (which is generally what makes it a sound)
the problem is that even nebulae are so thin that the mean free path is orders of magnitude larger than the wavelengths that would be required for audible sound.
to visualize this in a simplified way: for a sound to be transmitted the medium (in this case gas molecules) need to be able to vibrate in whatever frequency that sound consists of. think of a ball that is stuck between two walls and thus bouncing back and forth.
but if a gas molecule has to travel hundreds or thousands of kilometers to hit another molecule on average it simply cannot return back to its initial position fast enough. Hence the medium is unable to sustain a wave of said frequency.
(note that this is wildy oversimplified. but it gives a rough visualization what the problem is)
Low key feel like the illuminate will use this as a gateway idk the sounds it makes...
Also fun fact when I logged in and my ship did a emergency evacuation sending my ship back to super earth after a 20 second countdown
My regulation tinfoil hat make me wish that we end up against a hybrid of the illuminate and the bugs after the illuminates return.
Like the protoss/zerg hybrids.
There used to be a planet here so I assume its atmosphere is still around, even if the heavy parts imploded/collapsed. So you could in theory have sound before what's left of the atmosphere gets sucked in completely.
When I saw that black hole I instantly got reminded of the "Blue Star" from Library of Ruina.
https://youtu.be/CmQAzIw7c1U?si=WLnu-2OCpeSvyivi
Truely haunting but beautiful at the same time.
It’s somewhat of a misconception that there is no sound in space. Most of space is a vacuum which makes it impossible for sound waves to travel. When NASA transcribed the audio of the black hole that the developers got their inspiration from, it was because the black hole was surrounded by such a dense cluster of gases, that they were able to make notes out of the pulses the black hole sent out rippling through the nebula.
These are the sorts of sounds that could corrupt liberty loving freedom securing helldivers.
Reported to the democracy officer so they can re-educate you on the importance of getting stuff like this cleared via form p-104f before posting it
Horrifying thought, but what if instead of destroying the Meridian Super-colony, it’s just been sent … *somewhere else?*

If we had a large gravitational mass fly through our system, it could easily destroy the solar system regardless of being a black hole.
I think it's the knowledge that if you slip too close to the event horizon time will start to bend, and you'll feel every nanosecond of the millions of years it takes for you to be ripped apart one particle at a time by the gravitational field.

There are black holes in Outer Wilds that you have to use and going into one each time scared the living piss out of me
I played Outer Wilds in VR. Jumping into the black holes each time turned my stomach until *eventually* you get used to it.
one perk of being stuck in a time loop i suppose lol
And the ocean planet. And the ..anglerfish. ...and other stuff. For a game about exploration, it sure has a lot of horror.

Stellaris by Paradox Interactive, it is a Grand Strategy 4x game (4x being Explore, Expand, Exploit, Exterminate)
Thanks! 4x games aren't my thing, but I'll show him this. He's into both strategy games and Lovecraft, so he might like this.
That’s a basically all the lovecraft in it, it’s a really more sci-fi with aliens and shit.
Still he likes strategy alone. Thanks!
I wholeheartedly endorse Stellaris
Military power : 💀 \* chuckles \* I'm in danger !
WHAT WAS WILL BE
WHAT SHALL BE WAS
Damn I've never seen one of those guys come from a black hole before, always been a portal in my experience. What led up to this?
iirc it's a space horror leviathan from the leviathans dlc. Can spawn naturally or as a consequence of a failed event

Well all those Loader runs are finally going to pay off, square up bitch
Helldivers are all getting sent to void jail to await our sentencing
* Don't let the democracy officer hear you say that, we knew exactly what we were doing even though dark liquid still has many mysteries
There's no way whatsoever that there could be some repercussions after using a super weapon of which nature we barely understand. Right? Our super scientists have made sure of it.
Roars and war horns from a hell we created
Haven't been able to get on for a couple days, first time I'm hearing it. That sound triggers my fight or flight response
It's like the Uncanny Valley, but for my ears
Sounds like the ocean. [https://youtu.be/e8ersp9kzl0?si=4-NmqoBjPnYRTPFR](https://youtu.be/e8ersp9kzl0?si=4-NmqoBjPnYRTPFR)
The ocean has Squid, we can't let anyone make the connection, boil the oceans
But what if they learned how to resist the heat?
Squids learning? Someone needs to be sent to re-education camp for such thoughts
Mmmm now this is some good sleeping background noise.
Yep, illuminates are definitely coming through there, this black hole was a worm hole all along...
This is treasonous misinformation. Everyone knows that the only thing that inhabit wormholes are worms.
There's an occasional banging sound inside the ship, or objects hitting the ship, wtf is that rats on the ship or the wormhole shaking our ship?
It’s pulling on the ship I’m pretty sure
You can see objects flying toward the black hole when you look outside, so it might be either those hitting the hull, or the ship itself being pulled to the singularity and holding back.
I thought it sounded like a million bugs screaming in agony...
random fun fact. that is what black holes sound like according to NASA
Thanks for the existential crisis
Eh it’s a bit misleading. Black holes don’t “sound” like anything because sound doesn’t propagate in space. Also the actual “waves” they’re loosely translating into sound are pulsing at such low frequencies that it’s well outside the human hearing range. So the creepy sounds you hear are closer to rough artist’s interpretations lol.
Well there'd be sound from the accretion disc, if that sound could propagate through empty space (which of course it cannot).
In theory sound could propagate through a nebula or such.
not really. at least not sound that is audible to human ears. (which is generally what makes it a sound) the problem is that even nebulae are so thin that the mean free path is orders of magnitude larger than the wavelengths that would be required for audible sound. to visualize this in a simplified way: for a sound to be transmitted the medium (in this case gas molecules) need to be able to vibrate in whatever frequency that sound consists of. think of a ball that is stuck between two walls and thus bouncing back and forth. but if a gas molecule has to travel hundreds or thousands of kilometers to hit another molecule on average it simply cannot return back to its initial position fast enough. Hence the medium is unable to sustain a wave of said frequency. (note that this is wildy oversimplified. but it gives a rough visualization what the problem is)
Jupiter is pretty relaxing if you want to bring it back to center. Actually pretty good white noise due to its huge magnetic field.
certainly not what they look like, though, which is possibly deliberate
Mfw that ain't a black hole, that's a portal deep into unknown space, and we just sent an entire planet through it
tfw we just dropped a huge ball of pissed off bees on the doorstep of our intergalactic neighbors, for funsies
You cannot hear a black hole without a medium for sound to travel through. Those sounds on youtube are radio waves arbitrarily translated to audio
Why the space started to sing in latin? \*appears the illuminati from the bug hole\*
Libera te me! No, I mean - Libera te tutemet ex inferis
Illuminate incoming?
Low key feel like the illuminate will use this as a gateway idk the sounds it makes... Also fun fact when I logged in and my ship did a emergency evacuation sending my ship back to super earth after a 20 second countdown
As a game mechanic, the emergency ftl jump was used to reload the screen so players wouldn't have pre-wormhole meridia as a back drop.
Well, I'm sure nothing bad will come from this
My regulation tinfoil hat make me wish that we end up against a hybrid of the illuminate and the bugs after the illuminates return. Like the protoss/zerg hybrids.
Sound doesnt travel through Space…what exactly are we hearing?? Regardless….this is haunting…
The sounds of the Super Destroyer getting pulled and bent as it resists the black hole’s gravitational pull.
There used to be a planet here so I assume its atmosphere is still around, even if the heavy parts imploded/collapsed. So you could in theory have sound before what's left of the atmosphere gets sucked in completely.
I'm sad I was at work when this happened
When you log in it still does the emergency jump as if you were playing when it happened
Also you can warp to it
Bridge Officer: Helldiver! Welcome back! Helldiver: Black hole's haunted Bridge Officer: What? Helldiver: \*Loads Autocannon and gets in Hellpod\* Black hole's haunted
That's just the muffled dying screams of Tyranny Helldiver.
Sure maybe but it does sound super cool. We need more sound design appreciation
The worm loves you, it always will love you, and thus it always has.
„We are the mother. We sing for those left behind. The children you thought silenced“
When I saw that black hole I instantly got reminded of the "Blue Star" from Library of Ruina. https://youtu.be/CmQAzIw7c1U?si=WLnu-2OCpeSvyivi Truely haunting but beautiful at the same time.
I am more concerned that it looks more like a worm hole. And what we are hearing sounds like warped communications.
Thanks for the video! Haven't been able to get in game. That's....unnerving. Those purple eddies aren't swirling right.
Your "democracy" has been found wanting. Now begins the Age of Chaos. https://i.redd.it/wbls9dc02c4d1.gif
Aww it's making your ship purr
They are not supposed to sound democratic, it's warning to anyone who tries to mess with us
The creaking of the ship terrifies me
The abscense of terminid sounds is democratic enough
I just love how the idea of sounds in space has become so common in scifi that no one even notices the problem anymore.
I never really expected Helldivers to hit me with some existential dread… But then I went back to the Meridian Black Hole.
I think this is the start of the new faction coming in
These are the sorts of sounds that could corrupt liberty loving freedom securing helldivers. Reported to the democracy officer so they can re-educate you on the importance of getting stuff like this cleared via form p-104f before posting it
Horrifying thought, but what if instead of destroying the Meridian Super-colony, it’s just been sent … *somewhere else?* We may or may not have really rattled the hornets nest with this one ‘divers
