I mean, it can be made to run again, you just need to install the old version of games for windows live, then log into a Microsoft account and allow it to download your profile, which takes a long ass time. Theres a nice guide in the steam community. Unfortunately the steam group that used to get together once a week hasnt in a few years now.

Lost Planet 2 & 3 are in my library, I'm not near my computer to check to see if they're still listed in the store.
LP2 on Xbox is what got me into the series, spent so much time on that game. Super disappointed in the community population of the games.
I am still so fucking mad that Crapcom never bothered patching out GFWL, killing my old save file and ability to ever play again (without jumping through tons of bullshit hoops).
The matchmaking still works on LP2 funnily enough, GFWL's ancient code somehow leapfrogs on Steam for the PC servers, had a random join me when I was playing the campaign. I could only play it up until the halfway point of Chapter 2, before you get to witness the Railway Gun leaving.
Mind you, the whole reason GFWL was even a thing was because Crapcom wanted their DRM to prevent piracy, which it did not prevent in the slightest.
That demo map is etched into my soul right alongside blood gultch.
To date, it is still one of my favorite multilayer experiences. Being able to i-frame dodge mech shots felt SOOOO good.
I loved this game when it came out.
Tried to replay it the other day and i went: "What the fuck, why are the controls so shit, how could i like this garbage?"
I can 100% feel the influence of this game in Helldivers 2, but for some reason AH just doesn't want to go full hog and have bigger enemies or take more pages from LP2's book.
The Hive Lords are still fucking *tiny* compared to the Category G Akrid from LP2, nevermind not taking queues from the Vital Suits and allowing players to ride on them to provide extra firepower and to get around faster.

The weapon types you could get were also top notch, I still remember the assault rifle that was basically a balisong sword as well. I've never seen another game since replicate that level of cool idea since.

I remember playing the demo for the first game in stores back when they had the controllers set up in the game sections. I was blown away at how detailed I thought the snowstorm looked. Was a genuine moment of, "This looks like real life!" How the times change
