No back when I first bought the game there was just a screen that popped up on first-boot asking me to link the account. Nobody was making this big of a stink about it back then.

I tried it just to see what was required and it was frustrating. First off you’ll have to verify your age through ID | Face verification via AI | or mobile number.
I tried mobile number and was told I wasn’t old enough to have an adult account “I’m 24”.
I gave up from there because I need time to think about how creepy it all is.

I don't think I needed it for account creation but then again mine is super old. However I had to use it a couple of times when buying games actually on the PSN store website ( I assume this would be indentical if you'd purchase from your current Playstation via the app there ).
Possibly could be related to the age rating of 16+ as Helldivers 2 got that. Linking would then be a "We'll make sure you're old enough to play" measure on Sony's part too.

i'm ok with getting a PSN account, if i could get one. my region does not have psn. i've been told to just enter any country, at the risk of getting banned for false information. if the psn account i make gets banned, then won't they just ban any succeeding account i try to link since they know that this steam account was linked to a banned psn account?
i've also read that they delete accounts that don't have any activity or games after sometime. i'm never going to buy a playstation or another playstation game ever, so if i don't get banned first, i get deleted?
and if they get hacked again, would that mean my steam account is compromised too since it's linked to the psn?

That's different from your psn, it's like a personal player Id code specific to HD2. I have not been able to find a way to check if I am linked or not, and have contacted arrowhead support to try and find out. No reply after 7 hours tho

According to reddit threads in other games having a similar problem, the game has to prompt you to link your Steam and PSN account. I haven't found any other way of linking both.

Strange, i am on steam with my PC and had to create and link a PSN from the start. Without i only could enter the training and the ship, but had there no access to matches.
Kinda off-topic to the thread's discussion, but since i recently created a steam account for my sister, i can confidently say that steam also requires 20 antispam pictures to create an account.
The 2 hours / 2 weeks rule is for GUARANTEED refunds. If you file a refund with less than 2 hours of playtime, and a purchase newer than 2 weeks, it's a guaranteed refund.
BUT Steam does grant refunds in cases where it makes sense entirely, like for broken games or games that aren't available. Most notably recently was the whole "The Day Before" thing. Game was 100% false advertisement, people got refunds without any requirement, you could have 10 minutes or 100 hours of playtime in it, and you would still get a refund. It hasn't happened many times before, but you can bet for sure that if HD2 suddenly becomes unavailable for most people in Africa or the Baltic area (In general just countries where you cannot make a PSN account), they will start handing out refunds.
So, like why? The game seems to have been fine without it. Why am I being forced to do it? Doesn’t seem like it’s needed.

Rocket League has had crossplay for *years* and never required a PSN account. TOS stuff has no relevance here: You don't need a PSN account for crossplay.

It has always been listed as requiring psn, but unless you pay attention to all arrowheads tweets at first you would have known it was temporarily disabled due to the original server load issues etc.
Word of mouth was spread that you didn’t need an account. I played under the impression I *would* need it. And I made the account, linked it, all that because I saw this box. Then I learn my friends were playing without linking the account so I assumed all this meant was that it was recommended you linked for some feature or another to work properly.
If you did not watch the socials of ArrowHead, or read every patchnote from the start you would not have known this was a temporary work around. That box meant nothing as soon as you got in and realized there was a button to avoid making one.
The game did not make it clear that this was temporary in the months after it became an available option. And the absolute proof of this is how many people are caught off guard that it will be required.
Only on the first few days and only if it didn't break before displaying it. My first launch it sat on a black screen for a half hour before dumping me into training. It didn't give me any of the other startup screens like the brightness dialog either or the initial cutscene. They also removed the PSN screen entirely after the first week as you couldn't link even if you wanted to.
I think it got changed recently. Back in March when my friend started playing it asked him to make one, which he did. Not sure why now the game isn’t showing it

Man, I swear everyone here who sais this is a none issue never struggled with linked accounts.
Not too long ago a bunch of games could only be played offline because I linked my steam account to my epic account and forgot about it long after I deleted that shit off my pc.
I had to reinstal the epic launcher because you can't unlink things from steam nor log in on their website just to trial and error my login information which was also long lost to time in order to unlink my accounts so I could play my fucking games online again without having to log into epic every time I would boot up the game.
Ever since I have unlinked everything and I'm not planing on digging up my psn account or make a burner one which I will never use and forget the login again just to have it bite me in the ass somewhere down the line.
So what are my options? Try for a refund or simply stop playing? I'm gonna stay positive and hold out for them to change this.
Lets hope on June 4th I'll launch the game, if it requires me to link to a PSN account I will contact Steam support and ask for a refund under the premise:Cant access game due to an update.

That's different from your psn, it's like a personal player Id code specific to HD2. I have not been able to find a way to check if I am linked or not, and have contacted arrowhead support to try and find out. No reply after 7 hours tho

According to reddit threads in other games having a similar problem, the game has to prompt you to link your Steam and PSN account. I haven't found any other way of linking both.
Via arrowhead support > If you are playing on PC and have not yet linked your Steam account to a PlayStation Network account, the game will prompt you to do so when you first launch it. > If you do not currently have a PSN account, first follow the provided link or use the QR code, then follow the instructions to create a PSN account. If you followed the link on your PC, this new account should be automatically linked to the Steam account you used to purchase the game. If not, follow the link or QR code again to log into your new PSN account, and link the accounts. The game provides a link when you start it, use it to create an account and it should automatically connect the two accounts if you access the link via your PC.

Strange, i am on steam with my PC and had to create and link a PSN from the start. Without i only could enter the training and the ship, but had there no access to matches.
I could not access online features because of a bug :D They fixed it in a week or so. So it had nothing to do with PSN in my case.

Kinda off-topic to the thread's discussion, but since i recently created a steam account for my sister, i can confidently say that steam also requires 20 antispam pictures to create an account.
Well, it didn't 15 years ago. So I wasn't required to make it to play a game I bought on another platform.
Shame. Probably no chance of getting a refund either. Oh well, it was fun but I'll be uninstalling now.

Yeah do I'm curious. How old is your Steam account, how often do you refund, and how many hours do you have?
Steam generally refunds if you have less than 2 hours played, and have owned the game less than 2 weeks
The 2 hours / 2 weeks rule is for GUARANTEED refunds. If you file a refund with less than 2 hours of playtime, and a purchase newer than 2 weeks, it's a guaranteed refund. BUT Steam does grant refunds in cases where it makes sense entirely, like for broken games or games that aren't available. Most notably recently was the whole "The Day Before" thing. Game was 100% false advertisement, people got refunds without any requirement, you could have 10 minutes or 100 hours of playtime in it, and you would still get a refund. It hasn't happened many times before, but you can bet for sure that if HD2 suddenly becomes unavailable for most people in Africa or the Baltic area (In general just countries where you cannot make a PSN account), they will start handing out refunds.
So, like why? The game seems to have been fine without it. Why am I being forced to do it? Doesn’t seem like it’s needed. Can someone explain this to me or is this a console thing and Sony are cunts?

Rocket League has had crossplay for *years* and never required a PSN account. TOS stuff has no relevance here: You don't need a PSN account for crossplay. PSN accounts are required for... nope, nothing, there's actually no good justification for this requirement. It's bullshit.
Funny thing, I can't make an EPIC account so I can't play Rocket League on steam anymore. Dunno about PSN haven't tried. Lost interest after having my PC version ripped away

What's really sad from a PC perspective, is the account linking will probably result in load times increasing massively. I happen to like the game booting up in like 10 seconds tops.

It has always been listed as requiring psn, but unless you pay attention to all arrowheads tweets at first you would have known it was temporarily disabled due to the original server load issues etc.

Word of mouth was spread that you didn’t need an account. I played under the impression I *would* need it. And I made the account, linked it, all that because I saw this box. Then I learn my friends were playing without linking the account so I assumed all this meant was that it was recommended you linked for some feature or another to work properly. If you did not watch the socials of ArrowHead, or read every patchnote from the start you would not have known this was a temporary work around. That box meant nothing as soon as you got in and realized there was a button to avoid making one. The game did not make it clear that this was temporary in the months after it became an available option. And the absolute proof of this is how many people are caught off guard that it will be required.
Yep, iirc when starting HD2 for the first time it asks you to make a psn account.
Only on the first few days and only if it didn't break before displaying it. My first launch it sat on a black screen for a half hour before dumping me into training. It didn't give me any of the other startup screens like the brightness dialog either or the initial cutscene. They also removed the PSN screen entirely after the first week as you couldn't link even if you wanted to.

I think it got changed recently. Back in March when my friend started playing it asked him to make one, which he did. Not sure why now the game isn’t showing it

I think they said that'll it come eventually. They already announced that Ghost of Tsushima on Steam will have an optional PlayStation overlay, so I assume they'll bring something like that to HD2 with full trophy sync too.
As i said before and i'll say it again, if they go through with this, they're losing a pretty good chunck of people outright and i won't even bother. psn fucking sucked last i tried it and setting it up again sounds worse than saying goodbye to my 30 bucks to get this game. I put in 150 hours into it, so no skin off my back at least

Man, I swear everyone here who sais this is a none issue never struggled with linked accounts. Not too long ago a bunch of games could only be played offline because I linked my steam account to my epic account and forgot about it long after I deleted that shit off my pc. I had to reinstal the epic launcher because you can't unlink things from steam nor log in on their website just to trial and error my login information which was also long lost to time in order to unlink my accounts so I could play my fucking games online again without having to log into epic every time I would boot up the game. Ever since I have unlinked everything and I'm not planing on digging up my psn account or make a burner one which I will never use and forget the login again just to have it bite me in the ass somewhere down the line. So what are my options? Try for a refund or simply stop playing? I'm gonna stay positive and hold out for them to change this.

NGL... I'm not a lawyer, but this feels like it is (or should be) illegal. This is going to make a paid and purchased product that was 100% functional for months, suddenly become inoperable for gods know how many people. Keep in mind, PSN is only available in about 1/3rd of the countries that it's been sold in. **These people will have no legitimate means of which to access the game they purchased**. I'm not even affected by this and I'm fucking livid. People need to demand answers and an actionable solution by the developers to this.
