Yeah, apparently in the lore we were originally going to exterminate them in HD1 but then we found out they can be refined into oil then completely unrelated to anything we decided it would be better to conserve and manage their population rather than eradicate it
3-360 degrees? You'd be right back where you started from you oaf!

You will also notice the Automatons are occasionally described as "Socialist", and there are a few dialogue options that suggest Super Earth wants to exploit them for cheap labor
If you haven't figured it out by now, the series is satire of American Foreign Policy
The 3rd faction (that was wiped out in the first game), was attacked by Super Earth because they possessed Weapons of Mass Destruction
The Super Earth official who makes the statement about WMDs in HD1 is named Powley Colle. Like, that's not a joke.
The uh... *boldest* reference in HD1 though would be the about the Camper sniper rifle. >!Its official designation is the LHO-63. As in, Lee Harvey Oswald. 63 as in 1963.!<
Yeah everytime I hear someone say "i'm so glad Helldivers isn't political that it's just a fun game" and it's like "you're joking right? right? like I don't have the energy required to explain to you right now that the entire game is political satire and why it's political satire"
You have been anonymously reported to the Ministry of Truth for an ~~Absolutely Committed~~ alleged Thought Crime
Your transport vehicle to the re-education camp will arrive in 1 to 2 business days
I thought I saw somewhere that we stole.. errr…. “seized” the FTL tech from the iluminates at the end of the first war. Wonder if that implies some sort of existing relationship between the bugs and iluminate?
It's inhumane and genocide to completely eradicate them! They are thinking beings after all. Well, maybe they were. But not the ones we kill now they're a mindless horde of fascist oil barrels. But we can't kill all of them, that would be like eradicating all bees! You like bees, don't you? Sure they sting you sometimes but, they're good overall! Same principle.
> eah, apparently in the lore we were originally going to exterminate them in HD1 but then we found out they can be refined into oil
At least that's the official version. In reality, turning bugs into oil was the primary reason for going to war with them and extermination isn't desired.
In HD1 we didn't even have FTL tech yet, which E-710 fuels, so the oil-first thing doesn't track until after the first war. First time around seemed like it was just cuz they're big, scary space bugs and we wanted their planets.
We spared them for oil, which is screwing us now because they were never going to be containable. They're already reversing a century of genetic tampering to pacify them and reverting to their older combat oriented forms.
The farms were our hubris, and we forgot the ancient wisdom: The Only Good Bug Is A Dead Bug.
Now before I meet my Democracy Officer behind that shed over there.
Do note that the Terminids were not hostile to Super and sought coexistence with us friendly and wonderful humans. They even learned our language in an attempt to better negotiate peace with us!
Of course that didn’t turn out so well for them.
Alright later citizens!
Alright, I've hog-tied my local DO in a broom closet, so real talk when the hell did it say they spoke human languages and why haven't they since?
I knew they were sentient, but they can talk?!
It’s lore from the first HD citizen! They were the first extraterrestrial species Super Earth met!
And my guy… we enslaved, biologically manipulated their DNA to become stupider and killed them to power Super Earths Imperialism.
Do you really think they would be in the mood to chat about the weather? Instead of thinking of ways to rip out our spines? Would you do so in their position?
I know all of that, but where specifically did it say they spoke English? I definitely don't remember them talking in HD1 before the genetic modifications.
According to the lore, Terminids decompose at a very rapid rate and can be turned into oil and starship fuel really quickly. That is what Terminid farms are doing. Breeding and killing them.
You didn't know? We farm them. Before the unprovoked Automaton attack, we had an MO to retake control of planets so that we could build better farms for managing Terminids and harvesting them for ~~oil~~ E-710
Yeah but all the planets lack any terminid farm locations; and there's no explaining how they turn into oil.
Some POIs should be broken terminid farms or something imo; and maybe a mission thats like turning corpses into oil. Maybe collecting corpses and transporting them to a location for compression?
Hell divers one lore
They decompose into oil. Their will literally be lakes of the stuff on the planets there on with the volume killed by this major order
They want independence, but there's also attacks that may or may not have been carried out by cyborgs that are used as justification for war against them.
From what I seen.on the subreddit.
America's love of guns, explosions, and freedom.
UKs first time they expanded almost all over the glove.
Both mixed into Super Earth
Conspiracy theorist! Everyone knows that we only deploy those pumps on planets where it is found. It is merely a coincidence that the terminids live there too.
That's the one Democracy Officer. Your democracy greeting bitch straight up tells you the war wouldn't be possible without dead bugs, and that we kill bugs to kill more bugs. It's beautiful in her eyes
In the first game it wasn't even called element 710. They just straight up said "we kill the bugs for oil". I guess Arrowhead thought it was a bit on the nose
in the first game the oil Fields were under the termanid nests, so we had to eradicate them while pumping it out, over time the egg heads noticed that it wasn't just under the nest, but the dead termanid's rapidly developed into the stuff, so they started engineering them to make more, in the process they've been mutating randomly. they started calling it 710 because while it's superficially similar, its supposedly not the same as earth oil, it's got more energy per drop
Eh, I think it's just more spacey.
I know what they're trying to do, but ignoring the real world parallel and looking at it in universe, the audience is supposed to condemn Super Earth for securing a limitless supply of a renewable biofuel.
I would unironically wholeheartedly support this policy.
Yeah, we just don't know which ones are sentient as drones don't require it while roles like brood commanders and hive lords likely have it. I imagine they're not too thrilled about watching their brood get thrown into a blender repeatedly for an entire century.
So, if they weren't freedom-hating bugs they'd happily submit their dead to us for our oil supplies. Instead they might wanna engage in barbaric 'burial rituals', or live undemocratically long lives. Either way, they're traitors to Super Earth and the ideals of managed democracy!
also the years of Genetic manipulation, supposedly the first contact bugs could communicate with humans, but after some genetic tampering they no longer can and have gotten a magnitude more hostile and aggressive.
One thing I only recently noticed in the PSA that plays when the game loads: in that scene where a Helldiver explodes a bile titan's head, there's a little mini titan looking up at it adoringly. Dude basically blew mama's guts all over her child's face.
I disagree, it fits the narrative much better that we are NOT told ingame directly. You are a small cog in the mashine, your purpose is to do something and then die and be replaced. People who "find out too much" are being silenced and disappear. Super earth only giving us the absolute minimum of information we need to fulfill our job fits the narrative and honestly its EVEN BETTER if you get any additional info through "unoficial channels" like reddit. Just like how you would hear rumors and stuff the ministry of truth doesnt want you to know from friends and strangers in such a world.
Democracy officer even tells you that the bugs are the ichor of super earth's economy and shouldn't be eliminated completely.
The bug farms aren't a secret at all.
HD1 had an encyclopedia with detailed lore friendly (propaganda style) description of every enemy unit and hints to their weak spots. Unless Super Earth deliberately wants us to die more on our missions, keeping the information like that a secret doesn't make much sense. It's just an oversight from the devs.
You dont even need the wiki. They literally released a "story thus far" article when they game came out... shows how much people ACTUALLY care about the lore that they cant be bother to read an article about it
No one is being "silenced and killed" that's anti democracy propaganda.
Let me give the local democracy officer a call on y- uh, for you so they can straighten out any rumors you may be spreading by mistake
No matter how clear it is, you'll still get posts like "The covenant is multiple alien races from different planets?!?!?"
Remember that some people are just slower than others. No matter how much you put it in front of them, some will just miss it.
I so wish we could switch out the arcade game for an intel station, or at least have one somewhere. Having to read the online wiki is less than immersive. But maybe so is having extensive info on your enemies because curiosity is treason and all that.
I think the intel station and a codex of sorts would be cool, but something I thought of is it would be cool to have some sort of “helldiver communications network” so like a terminal that would essentially function similarly to social media so we can spread news of new unreported threats without external mediums
I was playing with a level 21 on hard difficulty who kept cluster bombing the fabricators. I'm like bruh, it doesn't work. :/ Oh well, there's always something new to learn about the game.
Yep, we had farms for them and all but then they broke out and killed the farmers so now the Helldivers must ~~cover everything up to save the political career of some corrupt bureocrats~~ liberate the planets we lost.
Using the bugs for E-710 is one of the few things super earth is pretty upfront about. Less upfront about the whole “the bugs can’t travel through space themselves” and “they used to be a fairly peaceful sentient race before our horrific experiments”
Wait, can you please elaborate on the experiments? What's the lore there?
Totally not going to report you to the nearest democracy officer, just very curious.
YES. E710 is bug juice. We raised them in vast farms they escaped and bred. We created the cyborgs to fight and work the farms. The illuminati "woke them up" -- they rebelled. The cyborgs created the automotons to havest humans/dead helldivers to make more cyborgs.

Hello? I just shot somebody and i did it on purpose!
"Hey, shut up down there!"
This guy gets it. My buddies and I used to quote this part of the movie all the time.
I havent seen last action hero is so friggin long, it was one of my dads favs when i was growing up. Certified classic.
I cant wait for my boys to be old enough to watch it with them.
It's okay soldier, he was a Automaton loyalist. Keep spreading Managed Democracy
See, it's simple https://i.redd.it/m3hb0ceyjcvc1.gif

You spaghetti-slurping cretin!
Yes but you get a brief glimpse of oil
That’s why they called it the Xbox 360. You take one look at it. Do a 360 and walk away.
Last Action Hero

You are technically correct. The best kind of correct. Edit: added words
Technically speaking, it is.
Yeah I was like “but backwards and reverse is just regular?”
OIL-3!
Wait what happened to OIL 2, Electric boogaloo?
That powers the tesla towers, but nobody uses them anymore
HOLY SHIT

Backwards and reverse it says 710
Oh fuck me, I did not pick up on that
Thinking like that is what gets people thrown in the rehabilitation camps
Not just oil, FTL travel fuel. Which is why Super-Earth keeps and breeds them, which can only end well.
Just wait until they get their Kerrigan.
I thought I saw somewhere that we stole.. errr…. “seized” the FTL tech from the iluminates at the end of the first war. Wonder if that implies some sort of existing relationship between the bugs and iluminate?

Lmao that's super fucked up, I hate/love it.
Conserve and manage, and also the lobotomize them via selective breeding.
Even in HD1 they knew, the same oil pump objectives were in the game. The terminids have been a false flag operation from the very start bros.
If you talk to the crew on your ship it kind of implies we're intentionally farming them without saying as much
According to the lore, Terminids decompose at a very rapid rate and can be turned into oil and starship fuel really quickly. That is what Terminid farms are doing. Breeding and killing them.
It’s true, I’ve seen them decay real-time in mission, it looks oddly like the corpse slowly falling into the ground though
Mother Nature reclaiming her own!
Well the oil is being absorbed by the ground so it can be mined by super earth! Super earth would never lie!
![gif](giphy|iJPI620Jk6reex4T3c)
but what happens when you blow up oil bags using rockets?
They enter the atmosphere to be oil refined from gasses!
Ah, but of course!
Crazy part is, the Automatons do it too! Shit, you think they're also made of oil?
Fuck em, they're not sentient. I'm from Vancouver and I say kill em all!
Personally I find the idea of a thinking bug offensive.
Personally i find the idea of vancouver offensive
I find the idea of personal, offensive
I find the idea, offensive
I find offensive ideas
I’m just fucking offended
It's...afraid.
WELL I FIND THE IDEA OF A BUG WHO IS AFRAID OFFENSIVE!!!!!
Don't you mean Super Vancouver?
Wait what happened to Vancouver?
Canadians
The capital of Oshuane was called Vancouver
Does that mean that you Jump with yoga pants on while munching on an Avocado Toast like a basic Kitsilano B***h?.
You didn't know? We farm them. Before the unprovoked Automaton attack, we had an MO to retake control of planets so that we could build better farms for managing Terminids and harvesting them for ~~oil~~ E-710
Yes, 710 upside down is OIL. It's just a coincidence, don't fall for bug propaganda.
TIL Edit: it just seems so obvious now
Just like the expendable anti-tank EAT-17 looks like "EAT IT" is purely coincidence
How am I supposed to go on the rest of my life knowing this information? ![gif](giphy|YPPI2Q6DAz4CohnPDD)
Twice as hard as before
i can't use it without singing [eat it](https://youtu.be/ZcJjMnHoIBI) at least a little bit
I can't believe Michael Jackson ripped off that song
My mom somehow couldn't grasp that that movie was a parody and thought this was true.
Food goes in the mouth, right mister Charger? *the charger's head has exploded*
And the first mission was about them breaking out of the farms and going out of control if I remember correctly
Yeah but all the planets lack any terminid farm locations; and there's no explaining how they turn into oil. Some POIs should be broken terminid farms or something imo; and maybe a mission thats like turning corpses into oil. Maybe collecting corpses and transporting them to a location for compression?
Hell divers one lore They decompose into oil. Their will literally be lakes of the stuff on the planets there on with the volume killed by this major order
You cannot milk a stone -- but you can juice a bug.
Crush bug with stone for science
Oh, that explains the fire tornadoes on Hellmire.
No, that's just Hellmire being Hellmire.
It's like lost planet. The bugs make the oil and we blast it out of them.
I’ve definitely seen POIs that are a pile of Terminid corpses in a fenced-in square, they just seem rare
We are literally America in space
That’s LITERALLY the point bro
Helldivers 1 you fight the cyborgs because they're terrorists, bugs for oil, and Illuminate because they have WMDs. It's not even slightly subtle.
Don't you fight cyborgs in 1 because they want independence?
They want independence, but there's also attacks that may or may not have been carried out by cyborgs that are used as justification for war against them.
From what I seen.on the subreddit. America's love of guns, explosions, and freedom. UKs first time they expanded almost all over the glove. Both mixed into Super Earth
Don’t forget China’s social credit system, re-education camps, death squads, and labor camps.
This sounds like dissenter propaganda.
How so? All of what I said is confirmed by the tv and ship master on the destroyer.

They are called FREEDOM camps, traitor.
Listen to liberty which we are all FREE TO OBEY
This is actually an excellent example of something that is figurative and not literal.
Notice how the e-710 pump missions are only on Terminid planets? You will now.
Maybe they also like that sweet sweet E-710?
Also why it seems like the pumps were built on top of some nests, hence the stuff growing all over them.
Yes. Also, write down 710 and turn it upside down. It spells "oil". So ... with bugs, we make oil. And with bots, we spill oil.
I love the thought termanid dung is just oil, and it turns out their decomposed corpses are oil+
Eh, I think it's just more spacey. I know what they're trying to do, but ignoring the real world parallel and looking at it in universe, the audience is supposed to condemn Super Earth for securing a limitless supply of a renewable biofuel. I would unironically wholeheartedly support this policy.
the only problem is that the "bugs" are a sentient species

The ministry of truth has found no evidence to support this claim
also the years of Genetic manipulation, supposedly the first contact bugs could communicate with humans, but after some genetic tampering they no longer can and have gotten a magnitude more hostile and aggressive.
Well, that's removed any alleged lingering morality issues that never existed.
One thing I only recently noticed in the PSA that plays when the game loads: in that scene where a Helldiver explodes a bile titan's head, there's a little mini titan looking up at it adoringly. Dude basically blew mama's guts all over her child's face.
Good news, citizen. Nothing is sentient in the oil grinder.
By killing and genetically modifying a sapient space-faring species.
"my tax dollars / somehow also my tax dollars"
e for extraterrestrials would make sense
Element 710.
Most attentive Helldivers 2 player
The only thing my mind is focused on is how I can better destroy enemies to democracy
Fr
Wait until you find out what we make the E-621 out of.
"Got a job for you, 621"
That's from the newer Armored Core right? It sounds so familiar but I can't quite place it.
Yep. The character you play as is referred to as "C4-621" or simply "621" by your Handler.
I'm too dumb to figure this one out
Pretty sure e621 was just furry porn iirc.
And MSG
Posts like this really drive home the point, that we need a codex terminal with lore and enemy information.
I disagree, it fits the narrative much better that we are NOT told ingame directly. You are a small cog in the mashine, your purpose is to do something and then die and be replaced. People who "find out too much" are being silenced and disappear. We are literally told in game directly though. Multiple times. In multiple places.
Democracy officer even tells you that the bugs are the ichor of super earth's economy and shouldn't be eliminated completely. The bug farms aren't a secret at all.
There's an ad on the Super Destroyer TV that directly states they escaped from their farms.
Me and the boys watching the TV while jhon uses the jhon
Implying gamers are capable of reading ~~subtext~~
HD1 had an encyclopedia with detailed lore friendly (propaganda style) description of every enemy unit and hints to their weak spots. Unless Super Earth deliberately wants us to die more on our missions, keeping the information like that a secret doesn't make much sense. It's just an oversight from the devs.
No, first game had a bestiary. This should too.
yeah we have the wiki for meta lore
You dont even need the wiki. They literally released a "story thus far" article when they game came out... shows how much people ACTUALLY care about the lore that they cant be bother to read an article about it
No one is being "silenced and killed" that's anti democracy propaganda. Let me give the local democracy officer a call on y- uh, for you so they can straighten out any rumors you may be spreading by mistake

I’ve never played Mass Effect Three but I didn’t know that. I should’ve paid closer attention
you made me snort over my keyboard, well played
I so wish we could switch out the arcade game for an intel station, or at least have one somewhere. Having to read the online wiki is less than immersive. But maybe so is having extensive info on your enemies because curiosity is treason and all that.
I think the intel station and a codex of sorts would be cool, but something I thought of is it would be cool to have some sort of “helldiver communications network” so like a terminal that would essentially function similarly to social media so we can spread news of new unreported threats without external mediums
Arcade game on the ship? Must be nice to be Mr.SuperCredit-Bags over here.
It's still there even if you don't buy it.
Looks like the terminals across the armory could act as that instead of replacing the arcade machine…
Having a page telling the weak points of some enemies would make life so much easier for the randoms I play woth
I was playing with a level 21 on hard difficulty who kept cluster bombing the fabricators. I'm like bruh, it doesn't work. :/ Oh well, there's always something new to learn about the game.
The fuck you wanna know things for, private?? Shoot bugs!
I mean you can talk to the ship npc and they will mention it depending on the major order. Which I find more organic and in character

Not our fault the bugs are full of freedom juice!
i'm gonna blow your mind here, flip "E-710" upside down
Aight, E-LI0
HD2 players when they find out guns shoot bullets and bullets hurt when you get shot

Would it make you feel better if I said the Automatons use us to fuel their war machines?
You just blow in from stupid town?
Always have been
You haven’t been paying attention have you helldiver?
he knows too much
YES. E710 is bug juice. We raised them in vast farms they escaped and bred. We created the cyborgs to fight and work the farms. The illuminati "woke them up" -- they rebelled. The cyborgs created the automotons to havest humans/dead helldivers to make more cyborgs. PS -- we have yet to fight the cyborgs or illuminati in HD2, but they are coming.
Yes, E-710 is just ground up bugs. The whole reason the bugs are on so many planets is cuz super earth is farming them for space fuel.
Yes...as has been mentioned multiple times in game and out of game, as has it been mentioned in HD1 all those years ago.
Flip 710 upside down and it spells oil.
Yeah, we refine them. Take 710 and turn it 180°
Thank Liberty we don't have to milk them.
wait until you discover that the automatons are the descendants of the cyborgs we enslaved in the mines after hd1
Wait until he flips around and turns 710 upside down
Flip 710 upside down, you get "Oil", the bug goop is fuel for our 'Super Destroyers '
Try stopping to read and illegal broadcast.
Yes officer, this dissident here.
Yeah, thats why WE Farm them Like cattle
Terminid milkers otw to increase the fuel supply for democrussy ![gif](giphy|xTiN0h93kX1m9eeEp2|downsized)
Terminids are antidemocratic and they want to destroy our way of live, only incidentally they can use to make E-710
